North Texas (my return to TCY)

It's been a very, very long time since I've sat down and played TCY. I'm guessing as far back as whenever the last post was in my moderately lengthy Rutgers dynasty. I've been watching a lot of college football lately, and I'm feeling the itch to get some sort of video game campaign going, so I've decided to go "back to school" and start a new TCY career.

  • On a whim, I've selected the North Texas Mean Green. I've had an affinity for them ever since an abnormally large number of players from North Texas have ended up on my IHOF team.
  • I'm going with a playoff system, simply because I've never once played the game without the bowl system in place. I thought it was time for a change.
  • The Solecismic 8 will be placed in New York, and i will alter the conference to represent The Ivy League from Division 1-AA.
  • Hiring/Firing is on
  • Suspensions are on
  • NO random reputions, conference, or academic reputations
  • All-Star difficulty level
I'll likely implement some house rules, but i's been so long I can't think them up off the top of my head. I'll probably go dig up one of my Rutgers dynasty threads to find out how I used to run things.

What we're working with

I'm taking a look around, trying to get familiar with my situation.

Academics: We're a 40 in overall reputation, just barely breaking into the "good" range. We're going to need to put in some serious work here to get this headed in the right direction. If I don't have academics to fall back on, I'm going to have very little to offer any potential recruits.

Ranking: We're ranked a paltry 82nd in the nation, but highest in the Sun Belt Conference (with Utah State at #86). This means to me that I need to take advantage and jump out of the gate to try to establish some conference dominane.

Staff: My defensive coordinator has some very obvious strengths, which is nice to see. He's excellent in playcalling, terrific in injury avoidance (an even more important rating in TCY than FOF, in my opinion) and terrific in developing linebackers. He kind of sucks elsewhere though, so I'm not sure how long-term a position he has here.

My offensive coordinator is experienced in the Power-I formation (5 years), so I'll stick with it. He's terrific at avoiding injures, and basically poor everywhere else. :gulp:

Roster: All our talent is at RB and FB, which only reinforces the thought about sticking with the Power-I for the time. What's unfortunate is that of our really good players, they're all late in their career. We've got a serious recruiting job to do.

Basically, the best I can do this year is focus on academics and recruiting and just let the coaches do their thing. I expect to be quite hands off in the game-planning for this year.

I tinker with the time sliders on guys I really think need attention, then start assesing my starting lineup for the season.

We decide to go with a "50" defense in order to really try to stuff the run. We have so little talent on D, that I think we're going to need to get agressive somewhere.

"Oh Shit."

That's what I say when I get a look at the schedule. We get an opening date AT Texas, the #8 team in the country... woot! We'll try to keep it within 80 points. Our schedule is interesting in the regard that we open with 4 non-conference games before playing 7 conference games in 8 weeks.

I have no idea how to format stuff on this board anymore, so I'll skip posting my roster. Here's a brief description of what I expect this year:

RB Brian Francis
This kid is going to be the offsene. He's our best RB, a senior, and a good kick/punt returner. He also has decent hands. I'd expect everything to revolve around, so when he inevitably gets hurt, it's going to suck.

WR Thomas Mang
He's a very green freshman, but we're going to give him a lot of coaching attention and see what he can do. He can be a real solid starter by the time he leaves, in my opinion.

The offensive line is green but has potential. The secondary is kind of half-way there, but not bad. We've got gaping holes at DT and ILB, and I'll do my best to shift guys around to cover up those weaknesses.

QB Darnell Hayes
He's the starter by default and a suspect talent. Let's just say I plan on doing a lot of running.

Recruiting

I will limit myself to a maximum of 2 phone calls and 2 visits per recruit, and only 1 per week.

I will start by limiting myself to recruits from just Texas and Oklahoma, and expand out based on any on-field success. This formula worked for me with my Rutgers dynasty, and I thought it was good so I'm sticking with it.

We run through two weeks of recruiting, touching bases with some guys we hope we can land, and then head off to play Texas.

Actually not as bad as I expected. Only our 3rd DE is injured (out for the year), so it's not too damaging a loss.

Week 3

It's becoming obvious I'm going to have to back off a number of the recruits I knew I was reaching for, It's going to take some luck to bring in any difference makers anytime soon.

On the brigther side of things Columbia comes to Denton this week... I think we've got a great chance to win.

Box Score: Columbia at North Texas
Denton, TX.

Week 3, 2004

2Q: 05:43 NTEX - Damon Sarbanes 13 run.
2Q: 05:43 NTEX - Mack Hayes extra point.
2Q: 00:44 NTEX - Damon Sarbanes 8 run.
2Q: 00:44 NTEX - Mack Hayes extra point.
3Q: 08:54 NTEX - Brian Francis 21 run.
3Q: 08:54 NTEX - Mack Hayes extra point.
4Q: 14:21 NTEX - Mack Hayes 38 field goal.

Game MVP: NTEX 27 Brian Francis

Columbia 7 0 0 0 - 7
North Texas 0 24 7 3 - 34

We roll, keyed by our running game. Backup RB Sarbane's breakthrough game (2 Tds) is ended by a broken jaw, which will end his season and college career barring a miraculous playoff run by us. Blech.

Still, it's nice to get in the win column so quickly.

This dynasty is reminiscent of my short-lived Baylor dynasty.

Ummm, realistically, you can probably tune out until 2012 and be better for it. I have a feeling the upcoming 2 seasons are going to be ugly for us.

I want to see this continue, if not because hey, you're a good guy, but because I need to see the Mean Green get run over by the Blue Raiders.
