FOF7 Empty Cupboard "House Arrest" Challenge

We'll see how this goes. I'll try to play and chronicle a SP career with some pretty severe restrictions on what I can and can't do while keeping the fun factor at play.
  • EMPTY CUPBOARD--Sim 2014. Cut every player. In 2015 staff draft, replace all staff members with staff who have never had a job. Start in 2015 with a roster consisting of 100% rookies and first-time staff members. Moving forward, every player on my roster and staff member on my payroll must be "home-grown." For players, that means they must be initially acquired by draft or as undrafted rookies. (If one of my guys hits FA, I am allowed to sign him on the open market, but no signing FAs who have played anywhere else.) For staff members, that means that they cannot be guys who have coached anywhere else.
  • SEVERELY LIMITED TRADING--The only trades I am allowed are AI-initiated ones.
  • FICTIONAL PLAYER POOL--There's a bit more overall talent in a fictional initial pool than an NFL pool, and since all of that initial talent will flow to the 31 AI teams, this will make things harder for the first decade-ish.
  • CHEMISTRY OFF--Chemistry is a place where I normally enjoy a huge advantage over the AI. Neutralizing that by just turning it off.
  • REX TICKET PRICES AND TRAINING CAMP--Also area where I enjoy an advantage over the AI. Neutralizing these as well, and doing this also helps moves things along well.
  • HIGH INJURIES--I am using 200 here to increase the challenge, importance of depth, and get closer to NFL norms there.
  • AI-HANDLED DEPTH CHARTS--Turning that completely over to the AI. That will help move things along with the high injury rate, plus it keeps me from having a big ST advantage--and from taking the time to fool with that.
  • WIDEST POSSIBLE CAP INCREASE RANGE--0 to 99
  • NO GAME PLAN SHENANIGANS--No 1st/2nd and short or 3rd and long cheeting foolishness. I must run at least 55% of the time on 1st/2nd and 3 or less. I must run no more than 25% of the time on 3rd and 4 or higher.
  • TAKE NO MORE THAN 60 PLAYERS TO TRAINING CAMP--This is primarily a self-check to prevent me from taking a bunch of guys and getting bogged down sifting through the rubble.
  • NO USING THE FRANCHISE TAG--Either renegotiate per the rules below, or sign them on the open market.
  • LIMITED CONTRACT RENEGOTIATIONS--Normally, I check every single contract every single season for favorable renegotiations, and structure contracts to my advantage. For this career, I will limit that as well. I may only three kinds of renegotations:
    • Cap outs may be done at any time.
    • Extensions may be offered to players in the final year of their contract, but they must be for the exact requested amount. No haggling. And no renegotiating contracts not in their final year unless a cap out or...
    • Players holding out may be offered their requested contract.
    • Apart from hold outs, all renegs, whether cap outs or extensions, must be done during FA1:1--the same stage when the AI does them--as opposed to waiting for any other more favorable time.
OK. I *think* this is everything. If anything else comes to mind as I go through my first season, I'll update this post. Creating the league now.

2015 STAFF DRAFT
Of course this year I get an entirely new staff from scratch. Here's the crew:

Last_Name First_Name Age Role Primary_Group PlayerDev YoungPlayerDev Mot Disc Play Str Con Scout Intvw
Pottinger Mitch 51 HC OL 62 55 71 47 19 0 0 97 18
Holmes Edwin 43 OC QB 18 54 70 44 54 0 0 74 52

Weber Harvey 41 AC DL 71 67 43 61 27 0 0 69 37
Conte Rod 36 SC N/A 0 0 0 0 0 55 56 0 0

We went after scouting this year because for now our main focus is going to be acquiring some good young draftees.

Nothing to do in FA with an empty roster.

2015 AMATEUR DRAFT
1(5): RDT Samuel Joseph (37/87): 3 red, including near-max numbers in bench and agility. It's not the sexiest position for the first draft pick in franchise history, but he seemed like the only clear stud there.
2(6): LT Larry Briones (18/42): 4 blue, 1 red (Sol). He might have been a bit of a reach, but there are enough positives to make me think his bars might climb a bit and make him a solid starting LT.
3(5): QB Scottie Bullock (4/44): I'm not sold on him by any means, but he has decent enough bars and good enough combines to make me want to give him a shot in the third round.
4(6): LT Zane Foster (16/49): I didn't set out to take two tackles, but this guy has a classic creeper bar signature and had solid combines. I couldn't resist.
5(5): SE Andre Rathbone (20/45): Had a couple of blue combines and nice bars at RR/AvdDr/End. Could be a nice possession receiver.
6(6): LG Hayden Dodge (21/46): Another potential creeper at OL.
7(5): FL Jimmy Godfrey (13/31): No-combine guy who looked intriguing.

I didn't play to go after any particular position or position group--just to grab the bpa with the exception of perhaps reaching for a QB. I ended up drafting 3 offensive linemen. It'd sure be nice to get that group in place early.
Screen of my first rounder:

As horrid as the rest of our defense looks to be, he could put up some really nice numbers, I would think.

2015 PRESEASON/TRAINING CAMP NOTABLE
  • No injuries worth mentioning. (Worst one to a draftee was a 2-weeker to the 2nd-round OT.)
  • 6th round OG Hayden Dodge emerges from preseason at 25/53, up from his initial 21/46, and looking like a solid starter.
  • 2nd round OT Larry Briones also had a nice increase, from 18/42-->24/47.
  • DT Joseph, at 45/86, is looking like the stud I thought he'd be.
  • 3rd round QB Scottie Bullock, on the other hand, is looking like a no-go from day 1. He's 4/44-->5/29 and I doubt the AI will ever play him. The good news is that's partially because...
  • ...undrafted QB Eddie Panetta had a positive camp (19/38-->23/43), knows 12 formations already, and is the clear #1. His player card:

2016 STAFF DRAFT
Nice upgrades at OC and SC. No changes elsewhere.

2016 AMATEUR DRAFT
Studly-looking QB shows up, interviews VO, but the interviewed bars are still very close to max in a bunch of cases. I get him.

1(1): QB Malik Burnett (26/90)--Yeah, can't pass this guy up.
2(1): MLB Roy Graham (19/52)--5 blues and great bars.
3(1): FL Heath Naughton (27/48)--Blues in dash/agil/drill, and nice bars.
4(1): RT WIlliam Falcone (18/42)--Could get moved to OG.
5(1): C Jose McKenzie (14/54)--Could be a very solid run blocker.
6(1): FS Damian Mix (19/35)--Decent combines and bars. Doesn't look particularly special.
7(1): RDT Caiden Vanags (17/40)--Possible run-stopper.

I like a lot of the tenets of your empty cupboarding. I've never done one before in any game, but strongly considering trying one in OOTP

Back in the saddle after a move.

2016 PRESEASON/TRAINING CAMP NOTABLE
  • No injuries worth mentioning.
  • QB Burnett pretty much holds his ratings. At the end of preseason he's 33/88.
  • 4th round OT William Falcone was 18/42-->23/46 as a tackle, and gets moved to RG where he's 21/47.
  • 2nd round ILB Roy Graham is looking like a pretty big miss there: 19/52-->22/42.
  • But my third round pick, WR Heath Naughton, looks like a legit starter with his 27/48-->31/51 camp.

We still have the league's worst roster by a wide margin (#31 = 53. Us=2). I don't really expect to win much, but I'd hope to see some of our promising players stay healthy and get solid development.

Hey, we won a couple!

Former undrafted FA CB Roy Caudle had a surprisingly good season with 8 picks and an 82.4 PDPct. Maybe the rest of the secondary was so bad that he had a low number of catches allowed and just got lucky with those picks.

We get another 1(1) next year and I'm hoping to be able to win 4 or 5 games.

We had one "watch closely" injury worth noting. LG Hayden Dodge had ankle surgery in Week 15. He's now 39/52 P2 and has a "Watch Closely" on him.

2017 STAFF DRAFT
No changes to staff.

2017 AMATEUR DRAFT
1(1): RB Cary McWreath (56/81)--5 reds. 1 blue. I wouldn't usually grab a RB this early in a dynasty, but in this case, he was such a clear #1 and has the capacity for a particularly long career. With the OL improving, maybe we can just feed this guy the ball.
2(1): SE Conrad Mullis (31/48)--5-blue WR with pretty solid development.
3(1): RCB Wade Rosenhaur (22/50)--"Good enough" combines and nice-looking bars.
4(1): LDE Alex Huffman (22/46)--More of a bars pick than a combine one.
5(1): FS Dale Fredrickson (16/29)--Really solid combines, horrid bars, and a VU interview. Gotta see who he is.
6(1): WLB Eduardo Cowley (18/36)--Looks like he could be a pass-rush specialist. I may switch to 3-4 because of him.
7(1): RCB Jorge Gerhardt (11/26)--Workout warrior or football player? He had great combines, lousy bars.

2017 PRESEASON/TRAINING CAMP NOTABLE
  • 3(1) pick RCB Wade Rodenhauser is going to miss roughly the first half of the season due to a torn calf muscle.
  • RB McWreath, as expected, is looking like the real deal.
  • Last year's 2nd round pick, ILB Roy Graham, who went 19/52-->22/42 last year, is up to 33/50 now.
  • 2nd round ILB Roy Graham is looking like a pretty big miss there: 19/52-->22/42.

We're still dead last in roster rating, but we've closed the gap: three teams above us are in the 30s.

We're going to try to feed the ball to Cary McWreath as much as we can.

WR Rathbone could put up some nice numbers for a 5th round pick over the next few years now that we have a stud QB. He's got strong RR, Avoid Drops, and Endurance.

Looks like McWreath is a decent receiver as well.

I used the "RB Focus" game plan from the FOF2K7 library with Rexed formations for most of the season. It's designed to get 'em the ball a lot.

Two holdouts: NT Joseph and SILB Reid. Both get their way, though Reid isn't very expensive.

We should start betting when you will win the Bowl

Awesome job so far, it is really entertaining reading your journey with this team.

2018 PRESEASON/TRAINING CAMP NOTABLE
  • Two starters on the OL are going to miss most/all of the season. LT Briones is on IR with a torn quad, and LG Dodge is going to miss most of the year with a severe hamstring pull.
  • 1st round pick OLB Jenkins looks like a beast at 45/84.
  • 4th round OLB Harvill--a guy I was concerned might just be a workout warrior--had a nice little ratings improvement. He doesn't look like much on an immediate contributor, but could be something down the line.
  • 3rd round DE Bingenheimer looks like a a nice find there. He's up to 34/61.
  • ILB Roy Graham, the 2nd-rounder from a couple of years ago who had a fairly big ratings drop in his first camp, continues to climb back up. He's now 45/52. (52 was his exact initial future, actually...)

Were it not for the two key OL injuries, I might think this team would have a shot at the playoffs. However, I think the OL will struggle. With an emerging stud QB, solid receivers, a pass-catching RB, and a weak OL, I'm going to throw a lot of short passes this year.

Our roster rating is still dead last, but we're no longer way below everyone else. Eight teams are at 31 or lower, and one other team is below 10. (We're 3.)

SLB Jenkins won DROY, but other than that, there wasn't much to like this season. I did try switching to a more run-heavy game plan for a few games when it was clear that we were struggling, but that didn't help much either. I'm pretty sure our OL was a big problem here.

I don't think he was an ideal pick here, but the top of the class was weak and he seemed like the best option.

  • 3rd-round pick TE Braasch looks like a very good find. He's up to 34/73. (The bad news is that he's going to miss the first 5ish weeks with a shoulder separation.)
  • 1(1) pick Burns looks like he's going to be a solid player, but perhaps not a superstar. He's 32/58 now and will miss the first 7ish weeks with a broken ankle.
  • The 7-week injury to Burns is the longest one to a player of note.

For the first time in the dynasty, we're not last in roster rating. We're up to #21. We're going to use the "RB Focus" game plan with slight modifications. I would expect it to do pretty well.

Heh. My favorite stat of the year: RB McWreath led the team in ypt with 7.70. I don't think I've *ever* had a RB do that for any of my SP or MP teams. I'm guessing that's an indicator that I need to be on the lookout for some improved WR talent.

Speaking of that, I think it'll start getting a bit more interesting in the draft now. I'm pretty set (and have depth) at some positions, while at others I'm still trotting 35/35 type talent out there. Without the ability to trade up or down in the draft, I foresee having to decide if I want to spend a 1st rounder on a guy who's likely to be an eventual 70/70 player at a position where he might not start for a few years, or instead grab a guy who's unlikely to be better than 55/55, but is a near-immediate upgrade at his position.

ISeemed like the one clear stud left at this point. Tough to pass up solid options at WR and CB, but I'm hoping that with a stud RB, this pick will pay off.

I tend to suspect that the VU interview I got for him was incorrect, but I thought I'd least spend a 7th

Definitely some stuff worth noting--both bad and good--as we head to this season...

2020 PRESEASON/TRAINING CAMP NOTABLE
  • It appears that QB Malik Burnett got hit with a big VSOD. He dropped from 73/85-->55/56.
  • That 7th-round no-combine OT I took with the 3.5 adjusted grade might just be a player. He went from 9/64-->19/69 and the AI has him set to start at RT in the depth chart.
  • Last year's nice 3rd-round TE find, Jimmy Braasch, held steady on his future potential. He heads to the regular season looking like a 47/74 player.
  • 1st rounder C Tyrell Booker looks like the stud I thought he'd be: 65/87. The WR that I almost took there is a solid-looking 43/61.
  • An AI team offered a 2nd round pick for backup QB Eddie Panetta. I refused. If this team turns into a contender, he could well be our Earl Morrall.

FOF evaluates us as having the league's #21 roster. I think we're better than that. (My code has us as #5. I don't think we're quite THAT good.) I'm going to use a Smash Mouth style game plan, at least at the beginning of the season.

The defense absolutely dominated against the pass. The front 7 looks awfully strong on paper, but the secondary appears to be pretty pedestrian. Interesting. Offensively, it looks like running it so much opened up the passing game for us. Burnett's 72.9 completion percentage is pretty crazy.

Obviously, I'm very happy with this performance. That said, I can't help but think that it's a bit of an outlier and we'll be a good-not-great team next year.

Heh. Note to self for MP reference:

I just had the #12 spot in the staff draft, and at all five slots there was no one better (by suitability rating) than the guy I had under contract.

2021 RENEGOTIATIONS/CUTS DISCUSSION
For the first time in this career, the cap has become a concern. I've got three "no-brainer" extensions to do (SLB Jenkins, NT Joseph, DE Bingenheimer,) and those take me right up to the edge of the cap (only $880K "max for new player" once I do those and sign a couple of obvious RFAs). I don't have to make any particularly hard decisions this year, but for the first time I do cut a few guys with salary as the primary consideration so I have a little room to re-sign a couple of others who are free agents. I won't go into detail since no cuts were starters (we're talking 43/43 4th-7th year solid-cohesion backup types, though ). I suspect that in the next year or two, that will change.

The cuts free up enough room to re-sign our long snapper and CB Wade Rodenhauser on the open market. The LS has a 97 rating, and Rodenhauser started 12 games for us last year.

Just a quick question : how can something like that happen ? I knew the future estimate could change but have the "previous" current higher than the "new" future estimate sounds really odd for someone who is not at the end of his career.
Is there any particular reason for that ? Are his stats gonna climb up again after this "bad period" ?

Thanks a lot

I have two solid young DEs, but this guy looked like the clear BPA when my pick came up..

I wasn't looking for a QB, but it's hard to pass up a possible solid one in the late third.

Not really a need position, but there's not much left worth drafting, it seems. Weak class I think.

Looks like he might be better than initial bars, but not sure if by enough to actually contribute.

2021 PRESEASON/CAMP NOTABLE
  • 1st round pick DE Stevenson looks like a solid player. He's 32/65 by the end of preseason.
  • 3rd round QB Jay looks like pretty much a total bust at 14/43-->17/33.

Solid roster. We're tied for 5th by my code, 6th by FOF. On paper, the defense looks like it should be even better than last year. Our passing cohesion is very high and we may try to throw it a bit more this year.

2021 RECAP
We were hit very hard by injuries and missed the playoffs. Three defensive starters (WLB Cowley, SS Gillspie, and SILB Graham) missed significant portions of the year and ended the season on IR. Gillespie had ankle surgery, so I'm concerned about him taking a ratings hit.

Whoa....a pretty early retirement. C Jose McKenzie calls it quits. I think I've read about someone else seeing this happen in FOF7: McKenzie is a starting-quality player who got 0 starts last season. I wonder if this is a "thing" in FOF7. He hangs 'em up after just six seasons at age 29. McKenzie was a pretty solid late-round pick, taken at 5(1). He became a 53/53 player and started for four seasons before being replaced by stud C Tyrell Booker.

STAFF DRAFT--Picked #25. No one anywhere close to the same quality as my existing guys.
