Big 3 Basketball League

Color me VERY interested in this. I've always thought such a format would be a really great idea, glad to see it become a reality.

Am definitely interested to see how it plays out. I think they are being smart in having teams based around personalities instead of locations for something like this, and then moving it around from location to location as a kind of touring sport.

Plus putting it in the dead of summer when there's basically just baseball is also smart.

If they can keep this serious, so that the games are played hard and for keeps instead of too loose and goofing around, I think it could totally work. The touring sport idea is really good. If they played a game in Winnipeg I would definitely check it out.

yeah, I'd watch. What sort of venues are they going to play at though? But I"m guessing there isn't much going on at MSG in the summer other than like Billy Joel for the 345th time.

I'm glad to see all that Friday and Are we there yet? money is being put to good use.

This rule seems odd to be though: Steals do not have to be cleared

That was always the rule on the playground when I was a kid. If the ball didn't hit the rim (airball or steal) then no need to clear.

Granted I'm a white kid from the suburbs of Winnipeg, so take my streetball creds with some grains of salt

We ran, and continue, to run the opposite. No garbage buckets.

We played the same way in TX. Steals and blocks didn't have to be cleared. Had to hit rim to trigger clearing.

I think we did the same thing with blocks and steals not being a clear.

Big 3 launches today. The games happening today at in Brooklyn, but it'll be broadcast tomorrow via tape delay on FS1. From the bit of footage I saw via Periscope feeds, it looks like the guys are rusty. Also, I think it'll be weird to see people on teams you can't readily identify like regular pro sports.

That said, I think they can fill the void left behind by the demise of And1 and with the rise of 3 on 3 ending up in the Olympics in a few years...it's especially timely. Should be interesting to see how it evolves.

Jason Williams injures leg as BIG3 League begins

2 injuries on day one, revelation by Iverson that he intends to play fairly little.
That should work wonders for interest in the up-scale beer league.

It's a league full of oldsters, obviously there are going to be injuries. I think all in all, it's harmless. It fills a network that needs content in the summer when much isn't on anyway. And with basketball's popularity, it's a lot better than all of the minor league circuits that crop up.

I feel like this might be more interesting if it were actually played on street courts.

(and if they had this theme song: Street Sports Basketball (C64) [1987] "Classics" - YouTube )

More than 15,000 showed up at Barclays.

The way they set this up is so smart. 1 day of games a week, each week in a different city, your ticket gets you into all 4 games for that week, with all kinds of fan-friendly shows and exhibits. It's like a traveling basketball carnival.

It wasn't very compelling today but it was the first show they have ever done. I think if this has a longer than 1 year shelf life, the old guys fade away and you'll get more fringe NBA players. Like Al Harrington was getting BULLIED by Reggie Evans and I think it's one of those reminders like, oh yeah, I don't wanna bang in the paint anymore, it's why I retired.

Agreed, it'll be interesting to see how it evolves and what type of guys they end up getting. You'll need these NBA former stars to keep putting butts in the seats long-term, but I really do think the model can work.

As for the other comment someone else made about it being on a streetball court, I'm sure they considered that except you can't get 15k onto a street ball court. Plus there are the injury concerns that come with the blacktop. Hell even And1 mostly played in arenas tho.

There are, apparently, injury concerns enough for over-the-hill players as it is.

Ask Mr. Williams and Mr. Magette .. once they get out of surgical recovery anyway.

So I guess 60 points was too much to ask as this week all the games were 25 for halftime and 50 to win the game. What's next, the 5 point dunk because they are too old to dunk anymore?
