Might have been a little premature calling the race for Pogacar.

Also, from watching on USA and seeing the promos for other USA shows, I'd never realized what absolute garbage the USA network is.

Lots of great sportsmanship and teamwork on display as well. From Pogacar heartily congratulating Vingegaard to Roglic quite obviously not at his best* absolutely sacrificing himself and a decent position by attacking repeatedly on the Telegraphe/Galibier stretch and also reaching the finish with a smile on his face together with another teammate.

Very impressive rides by Bardet and Quintana, also Gaudu recuperating between Galibier and Granon. Incredibly big gaps overall. And tomorrows stage is at least as tough with actually more climbing and finishing at a similarly difficult climb at Alpe d'Huez. Better them than me

*found it quite weird that people started acting like he hadn't had a bad fall with a dislocated shoulder, that he had to reset himself in a rush on the side of the road, just because he continued and didn't get dropped on every climb. There's a lot between 100% and 0%, which a lot of fans don't seem to grasp. I'm not sure there is another sport where it takes so little to utterly derail someone.

I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a strategy look like it didn’t work for so long - when most of the Jumbo riders were dropped and then Majka made it back - only to eventually work at the critical point. It felt like they had blown it trying to attack and burning their domestiques out on the flat so far out, but it worked absolutely to perfection.

Great team riding from Jumbo. What more do you need to say? It's been true of them for so long.

Jumbo with a pretty shitty day to end Week 2: First Roglic is taken out of the race (and given his clearly worsening performances and Jumbos Sporting Directors Statement it made Sense) and then Kruijswijk has a bad crash and can't continue. And then Vingegaard himself and Benoot also crash but at least they seemed ok.
So now Vingegaard pretty much only has Kuss and maybe Van Aert to really count on in the Pyrenees. And with the way Van Aert has been going he's liable to run out of energy at some point.

Be interested if Ineos can make their numbers advantage count for a surprise upset here or if it comes down to Vingegaard and Pogacic going toe to toe.

Stage 14 was pretty great as well with Michael Matthews getting a super win after an awesome counter attack on the final climb. Was dropped by Bettiol but stayed close, then came back and directly attacked. Behind, Pogacic really put the hammer down but Vingegaard stayed on his wheel while everybody else was immediately dropped. And for a minute it looked like Meintjes might jump into the Top3, in the end 'only' went from 13 to 7.

Quickstep Spriter Fabio Jakobsen (the guy with that horrofic accident in the opening post who amazingly recovered fully and won a stage btw this year) beat the time limit today by 16 seconds, spending everything he had on the final climb:

Tomorrow will be hell again for him ...

That was a hell of a fun stage 2 today. Cofidis finally get a TdF win with a ballsy attack from 1k out, Powless stays off the front long enough to stay in the KoM and Pogacar and Vingergaard are attacking each other already.

Alright, now that I finished the Netflix series, which was great btw, I know a bit more about the riders, and teams, and it makes watching the race days a lot more interesting.

Anyone else watching the tour this year?

Today's climb is crazy.

It was sad to see Cavendish break his collar bone the day after he was beaten by a bike length, for what would have been his record setting 35th stage win.

Watching odd days and highlights, not really possible to watch weekday stages. Puy de dome was neat (and weird due to no fans). Yesterday was thrilling with Pogacar taking his shot and Vingegaard juuuuust about able to hang on. Very rare to have a gap form and then stay the same (3-5 seconds) for multiple Ks. Then Pogacar also got impeded on another launch by the motorbikes in front ... Which then allowed Rodriguez to come back and win the Stage.
Hindlay likely lost 3rd yesterday, can't avoid connecting it to his fall. Brilliant ride by Rodriguez though.

Also happened yesterday:

Apologies for quoting just a small bit of your post.

To add to it, the motorbikes were held up because lunatics were all over the road, not making room for the riders. Carlos Rodriguez also got held up shortly after in a similar situation when he was trying to catch up with Pogacar and Vingegaard. And another incident with public interfering the race by walking onto the road just happened in today's stage.

I suppose this is the only sport where the public is so close to the event, they occasionally (albeit unintentional) do moronic stuff and make a mess?

I like how former pro Jan Bakelants compared the incident yesterday with soccer fans walking onto the pitch, overcrowding the outside of the penalty box area, just to be up close during a penalty kick (I'll forgive him for using Cristiano Ronaldo in the Champions' League in the analogy, that's never going to happen again ). I've never seen that happen, but the image of such a thing, I totally can imagine it and agree with the analogy.

Another fan caused a huge wreck today. Really impacted the Jumbo team riding for Vingagaard, as their best climber and the best American in the race was the one who went down first when he hit the fan. It's actually changed the entire day. The peleton is no longer pushing and letting the break go.

Looked like the back wheel of the bike hit the scooter. He just took a strange line while he wasn't looking at the corner. Drifted into the motorbike.

Vingegaard just topped every non-Pogacar rider by 42 seconds over the first 10ish minutes of the Timetrial.(Pog 16 down) or put another way a whole 7% faster.

1 full minute and 38 seconds over Pocagar. Unreal ride. And he did all of it on the TT bike.

I only caught the last 10 mins after work - the time was so unreal that at first I assumed they had made a mistake and time differenced him to Van Aert rather than Pogacar who had just finished.

Is it just me or are there not as many TT specialists around as there were 5-10 years ago, are they not riding the tour or is it just training is that much better now? It’s almost unbelievable that you can be that good at the toughest summits in the world and by far the best 2 TTers in the field, but it seems like it’s been the case for a number of years now that the GC contenders also blow everyone away in the TT’s.

Finishing on a 500m kicker with some of the steepest slopes in the tour after a HC category climb is just cruel. I can’t even begin to imagine what that must feel like.

Can't think of any other point they'd be making with Armstrong at this point. He'll never crawl out of that hole to respectability.

There are reasons the sport and the Tour especially endures.

The backstory with that team is that they have been racing in the shadow of the death of Gino Mader in a race crash just a couple weeks before the start of the tour at the Tour de Suisse. That entire team has been inspirational.

Sorry I'm not regularly on the forum anymore because I would have had plenty to chime in with as the race went along.

I'll just note for the record (with La Vuelta coming up in just a few weeks...)

In the US, at least, NBC Sports's Youtube page posts extended highlights (~30 minutes) of every stage that it broadcasts on Peacock. Those are indispensible, especially in mountain stages.

Also highly recommend Lanterne Rouge's 8-minute daily recaps.
