TB2: Boxing Historic Recreation (1890 - 1899)

1859 - 1889 : http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/...ad.php?t=43238

Almost to the day, I started recreating boxing history 1 year ago. We made it from the early days in the mid 1800s to the end of 1889. We pick it up at the start of 1890 as I built up quite a nice history.

January 1890 Rankings

Very small. I don't govern this nearly as intensely as other people do with their universes. I essentially make decisions on the fly and let the autoscheduler do most of the work.

All that's in the spreadsheet is the number of fighters in each group so I can quickly type in how many bouts to schedule and when the last title defense was for each weightclass and when the next one should occur. I control who the champions fight, but as I said, I generally just make those decisions on the fly.

Nunc Wallace (19-1-2 8KO)
vs.
Johnny Murphy (22-0-1 18KO)

Background Info
Nunca Wallace won the title from Bill Baxter by majority decision a year ago, and this is his first title defense.

Johnny Murphy recently defeated Bill Baxter (November 1889) with a split decision to become the top ranked contender in the Bantamweight weight class.

Ding.....Ding.....Ding

Round 1: Murphy started off the round landing a few shots, but Wallace soon took control of the round and wins it easily, but uneventfully. (Round to Wallace, 10-9 Wallace)

Round 2: Murphy put togerther a very nice round as he dominated Wallace from outside. Wallace was hurt a few times in the round. (Round to Murphy, 19-19 Even)

Round 3: A back and forth round with both fighting hard. Murphy pulled away in the last minute, however, as he landed several stunning shots. (Round to Murphy, 29-28 Murphy)

Round 4:
Wallace gets in trouble early as Murphy dominates another round. He had Wallace hurt and covering up for most of the round. (Round to Murphy, 39-37 Murphy)

Round 5: Another round with the challenger dominating the champion. Murphy keeps scoring from outside and has Wallace unable to do anything. (Round to Murphy, 49-46 Murphy)

Round 6: It looked like Murphy was taking the round off, but with 40 seconds to go in the round, he lands a crushing body shot that sends Wallace to the canvas. Wallace beats the count and survives the round. (Round to Murphy 10-8, 59-54 Murphy)

Round 7: Wallace came out swinging, determined to try and swing the fight to his favor, but after a minute Murphy was able to catch Wallace and then controled the rest of the round. (Round to Murphy, 69-63 Murphy)

Round 8: Again Wallace comes out trying to gain control, and this time when Murphy caught him he dropped him. Wallace beats the count and spends the rest of the round running for his life. (Round to Murphy 10-8, 79-71 Murphy)

Round 9: Wallace finally hits a stride and puts a nice looking round together. At the end, Murphy caught Wallace again with a huge shot. This time, Wallace managed to stay on his feet but he was dazed at the end of the round. (Round to Wallace, 88-81 Murphy)

Round 10: Wallace continues to put up a fight, but Murphy is just too good. He beats Wallace to the punch far more oftan than not. (Round to Murphy, 98-90 Murphy)

Round 11: A very even and uneventful round until about 30 seconds to go. Murphy landed a huge shot that hurt Wallace and he again covers up for the rest of the round. (Round to Murphy, 108-99 Murphy)

Round 12: A slower round, but Murphy does a bit more. (Round to Murphy, 118-108 Murphy)

Round 13: Another slow round, and this time Wallace manages to steal it near the end with a few nice shots. (Round to Wallace, 127-118 Murphy)

Round 14: Murphy seems to be content with coasting the rest of the way. He wins another round but doesn't really do all that much. (Round to Murphy, 137-127 Murphy)

Round 15: Give Wallace credit, he tried his best to survive. Murphy lands a wicked cross at the beginning of the round that dropped Wallace. Wallace would answer the count, but then get knocked down 2 more times. The third time was his last as he could not beat the count.

The fight ends at 2:15 of the 15th round, your winner by way of knock out...and NEW WBG BANTAMWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD....JOHNNY MURPHY!

Former featherweight champion Young Pluto suffers a shocking 2nd round knock out lose to Tommy Warren. Warren had only been 1-2-1 in his last 4 fights and this was seen as a safe fight for Pluto. Warren seemed to have other plans.

WBG Middleweight Title Fight
March 22nd, 1890
"The Nonpariel" Jack Dempsey (19-0-1 15KO)
vs.
Irish Jack Burke (30-7-1 19KO)

Background Info
Irish Jack Burke won the WBG Middleweight title on April 14th, 1882 defeating Jimmy Murray by TKO in the 15th round. In his 2nd defense of the title in January 1883, he lost a Unanimous Decision to Billy Baker. Also in 1883, he lost fights to George LaBlanche and Bob Turnball that hurt his ranking. He would go undefeated in 1884, winning a rematch with Bob Turnball and defeating Jimmy Murray again. After gaining the number 1 contender spot again, he beat Billy Baker by TKO in the 11th round to reclaim the middleweight title.

Burke's celebration was short, however, as he lost the title in his first defense by Split Decision to "The Nonpariel" Jack Dempsey. Burke remained active, and it cost him as he lost fights to George LaBlanche and Young Mitchell. And now, Irish Jack Burke has once again worked his way back up the rankings, going undefeated in 1889 defeating George LaBlanche and Billy Baker to gain what could be his last chance at the title.

Since winning the title from Burke, Dempsey has gone undefeated as champion. This will be his 5th title defense.

Ding.....Ding.....Ding

Round 1: Dempsey dominates the first round. Burke landed a hard shot near the end of the round. (Round to Dempsey, 10-9 Dempsey)

Round 2: Dempsey warned for leaning on Burke's neck. It was even for a bit, but Dempsey hurts Burke with a left hook and lands several clean shots afterwards. (Round to Dempsey, 20-18 Dempsey)

Round 3: Dempsey works a bit and wins an uneventful round. (Round to Dempsey, 30-27 Dempsey)

Round 4: Burke is warned for a low blow. Dempsey wins another round by dominating the action. Burke is having touble getting anything going. (Round to Dempsey, 40-36 Dempsey)

Round 5: Dempsey lands at will in this round and Burke's left eye is starting to swell up. (Round to Dempsey, 50-45 Dempsey)

Round 6: Burke comes out of his shell and completely dominates the round. He landed several clean shots and now there's swelling over Dempsey's right eye. (Round to Burke, 59-55 Dempsey)

Round 7: Burke and Dempsey traded blows for the first minute, but Burke is winded and Dempsey took over. When the round was done, the swelling over Burke's left eye had gotten worse, and now there is amouse under Burke's right eye. (Round to Dempsey, 69-64 Dempsey)

Round 8: Dempsey easily outpoints Burke in this round. Burke seems to be drained. (Round to Dempsey, 79-73 Dempsey)

Round 9: Dempsey easily dominates another round. (Round to Dempsey, 89-82 Dempsey)

Round 10: Dempsey didn't do much all round, and then Burke poured it on at the end. Looks like Burke stole a round here. (Round to Burke, 98-92 Dempsey)

Round 11: Dempsey lands a clean shot that stuns Burke early in the round. He keeps away from Dempsey for the most part, but at the end of the round, Burke is put on the canvas. He answers the count and survives the round. (Round to Dempsey 10-8, 108-100 Dempsey)

Round 12: A slow round with Dempsey outpointing Burke easily. (Round to Dempsey, 118-109 Dempsey)

Round 13: Burke is on the canvas again a minute into the round. He gets up again and takes a beating for the rest of the round, but he survives. (Round to Dempsey 10-8, 128-117 Dempsey)

Round 14: A very slow round with Dempsey getting a few shots in. (Round to Dempsey, 138-126 Dempsey)

Round 15: Dempsey wanted to put Burke away for good, but Burke holds up after taking another beating in thsi round. (Round to Dempsey, 148-135 Dempsey)

I have it: 148-135 Dempsey
Ringside Expert: 146-137 Dempsey

After 15 rounds of action, we go to the scorecards.

Judge 1 scores the bout 148-136
Judges 2 and 3 score the bout 148-135, all for your winner by unanimous decision...

and STILL WBG MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD, "The Nonpariel" JACK DEMPSEY!!!

It's about to get a lot bigger (sort of). I was content at first to just let the game randomly select fights, thinking that it would all average out in the end. It hasn't happened that way, though. Several high profile fighters have slipped through the cracks and it's forcing me to take more control.

For instance, James J. Corbett. He was 21-1-1 (5KO) recently and ranked 49th. He's ranked so low because he lost a fight to a guy ranked in the 50s by TKO in the 5th round (he was ranked in the 20s at this point). He fell down far, which was perfectly fine. The problem was that lose happened in March of 1889. He then fought in April 1889 against a guy ranked in the 60s (Corbett was ranked in the 50s at this point). Again, perfectly fine that he takes a sit up to get back to winning.

The problem is he didn't fight again until March 1890. A full year without a fight, and that fight only happened because I created the fight. I made Corbett, ranked 49th, fight Kilrain, ranked 13th, because I need to get Corbett up in the rankings since in real life he fought Sullivan for the title in Sept. 1892.

Of course, it is possible the game will randomly have Corbett fight 8 times in the next 9 months, win all of those and be rightoutside the top 10, but I can't take that chance. I need to get him up in the rankings.

So, to make sure fighters are actually fighting, I need to take more control. I'm still just going to control the top fighters, though. About 80% or more of the fighters in my universe are really just there for flavor, to give the best fighters someone to fight, etc.

Sullivan to Retire?

John L. Sullivan, the WBG Heavyweight Champion since Septmber 1885, has expressed his desire to step away from boxing. His last title defense was last year, when he scored a knockout victory against Pat Killen. The 31 year old champion has said he believes the time has come for him to step down as champion. However, he has not formally done so, and he says he needs more time to think about it.

The WBG seems perfectly content to allow Sullivan to take all the time he needs to make his decision. They have yet to make any kind of statement on the state of Sullivan's title and do not appear to be threatening to strip Sullivan of his title.

Note: All of the other top 10 fights in each weight class will be fighting as well, but the rest are fighting "easy fights". For example, if a fighter is coming off a lose, most of the time he'll want to try and fight an easy fight to get back on track. Also, a fighter that just beat a top ranked fighter might want to take on an easy fight next Basically, the only fights I am scheduling myself and keeping track of are top 10 fighter vs. top 10 fighter, or when an up-and-comer fights a top 10 fighter.

vs.

Background Info
Paddy Sullivan won the welterweight title from Lonnie Cadaress in February 1887. Since then, he has defended the title 3 times, defeating Tug Collins and Dan Muprhy by unanimous decision, and Paddy Duffy by majority decision.

Tom Meadows's only lose came early in his career when he lost a 6 round decision in mid-1886. Since then he has gone undefeated, raised in the rankings, and recently fought and defeated top ranked fighters Lonnie Cadaress, Dan Murphy, Skin Doherty and Tug Collins. This will be his first title fight.

Round 1: Meadows comes out and gets started quickly. He landed several clean shots through the round and controled the action. (Round to Meadows, 10-9 Meadows)

Round 2: A much closer round with Sullivan doing better than last round, but Meadows still gets the slight nod. (Round to Meadows, 20-18 Meadows)

Round 3: Sullivan starts off the round nice. He controled the action and kept Meadows away. In the last minute, he took it up another notch and started landing at will. Meadows isn't able to get started in the round. (Round to Sullivan, 29-28 Meadows)

Round 4: A close round with meadows barely doing better for most of the round. In the last 30 seconds, however, Sullivan takes the round over and starts landing shots with ease. (Round to Sullivan, 38-38 Even)

Round 5:
A very active round with neither fighter getting much of a lead. Too close to call, in my opinion. (Round Even, 48-48 Even)

Round 6: Another close, active round, but Sullivan pulls away in the last 30 seconds and clearly wins it. (Round to Sullivan, 58-57 Sullivan)

Round 7: A slower round. Sullivan does a bit better. Meadows receives his second warning from the ref. (Round to Sullivan, 68-66 Sullivan)

Round 8: A very slow round with neither fighter gaining the advantage. Meadows gets another warning. The referee may take points away, and it could be critical in this close fight. (Round to Sullivan, 78-75 Sullivan)

Round 9: It starts slow, but Meadows takes control halfway through and starts dominating Sullivan. (Round to Meadows, 87-85 Sullivan)

Round 10: Both fighters looked like they took the round off. (Round Even, 97-95 Sullivan)

Round 11: Sullivan controls a slow, methodical round. (Round to Sullivan, 107-104 Sullivan)

Round 12: Sullivan continues to control the action. As the round went on, Sullivan dominated Meadows more and more. In the last 20 seconds, Sullivan landed several clean shots. Meadows, at round's end, was carrying his hands low and swelling had appeared over his right eye. (Round to Sullivan, 117-113 Sullivan)

Round 13: Meadows started off well, trying to regain control, but Sullivan's superior defense kept Meadows off of him and he held onto the momentum. Sullivan is starting to run away with it at the end. (Round to Sullivan, 127-122 Sullivan)

Round 14: Meadows gets in some shots as it seemed Sullivan took the round off. (Round to Meadows, 136-132 Sullivan)

Round 15: Sullivan ends the fight with another dominating performance in this round. He landed at will and Meadows couldn't get anything going. (Round to Sullivan, 146-141 Sullivan)

My score: 146-141 Sullivan
Ringside Expert: 144-142 Meadows

This could be interesting. I saw it as a clear win for Sullivan, the ringside expert seemed to give a lot of the close rounds I had going to Sullivan to Meadows.

After 15 rounds of action, we go to the scorecards...

Judge 1 scores the bout 143-142 for Tom Meadows....

Judge 2 scores the bout 145-140 for Paddy Sullivan....

and Judge 3 scores the bout 144-142 for your winner....by split decision....

....and STILL WBG WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD....PADDY SULLIVAN!

Cal McCarthy (22-0-0 12KO)
vs.
Tommy Warren (20-4-1 13KO)

Background Info
Cal McCarthy quickly rose up the rankings and at the end of 1887, found himself in the top 5. But he had to wait his turn as Torpedo Billy Murphy and Young Pluto fought twice for the title. After Pluto won both fights (first by DQ, second by TKO), McCarthy got his shot last December and won the title by knocking Pluto out in the 12th round.

Tommy Warren has been ranked in the top 10 since the end of 1887, but the occasional lose always kept him in the lower end. However, his activity paid off when he shocked the boxing world with a 2nd round knock out of Young Pluto in January of this year. He followed that up with a decision win over Hank Brennan. This will be his first title fight.

Match up: Warren has a slight power advantage over McCarthy, but McCarthy is clearly the more gifted technical fighter. My prediction is McCarthy in an easy decision win.

Ding.....Ding.....Ding

Round 1: McCarthy comes right out and shows everyone he is not just another no-power boxer. He dropped Warren to the canvas in the first minute of the round with a thundering combination. Warren answers the count and survives the round. (Round to McCarthy 10-8, 10-8 McCarthy)

Round 2: Warren recovers and starts the round off strong, but McCarthy slowly takes control of the round away. A very close round, I give the nod to the champion. (Round to McCarthy, 20-17 McCarthy)

Round 3:
Another close, mildly active round. McCarthy steals it at the end by hurting Warren on the ropes. (Round to McCarthy, 30-26 McCarthy)

Round 4: McCarthy dominates the round and punishes Warren with shot after shot. With about 30 seconds left in the round, Warren could be seen shaking his hand. He might have hurt it. (Round to McCarthy, 40-35 McCarthy)

Round 5: A slow round. Warren barely wins it. He is also warned for hitting on the break. (Round to Warren, 49-45 McCarthy)

Round 6: McCarthy drops Warren to the canvas halfway through the round with a cross to the head. Warren gets up and takes a lot of punishment, but he makes it the next round. (Round to McCarthy 10-8, 59-53 McCarthy)

Round 7:
McCarthy spends the entire round punishing Warren. Warren is taking a lot of abuse and it's only halfway through the fight. He doesn't look like he's going to make it. (Round to McCarthy, 69-62 McCarthy)

Round 8: A slower round with Warren getting a few shots in, but McCarthy easily wins another. (Round to McCarthy, 79-71 McCarthy)

Round 9: McCarthy knocks Warren down twice and opens up an ugly looking cut over Warren's left eye. Warren gets saved by the bell at the count of 9! (Round to McCarthy 10-7, 89-78 McCarthy)

Round 10: A snoozer of a round with hardly anything happening. (Round to McCarthy, 99-87 McCarthy)

Round 11: McCarthy dominates the round. He also gets warned a second time for holding and hitting. (Round to McCarthy, 109-96 McCarthy)

Round 12: Another round with another dominating performance by the champ. (Round to McCarthy, 119-105 McCarthy)

Round 13: A slow round that saw Warren get a few shots in. Enough to steal the round. (Round to Warren, 128-115 McCarthy)

Round 14: McCarthy once again wins big in a round. (Round to McCarthy, 138-124 McCarthy)

Round 15: I guess McCarthy finally made his decision and he decided he wanted a KO win. He drops Warren two more times in the round, and on the second kncok down, Warren could not regain his feet.

The fight ends at 1:11 of the 15th round.....your winner by knock out....and STILL WBG FEATHERWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD....CAL McCARTHY!!

Many saw Peter Courtney as John L. Sullivan's only real viable opponent in the top 5. This month, Courtney suffers a unanimous decision lose to Jim Harvey, effectively taking Courtney out of title contention for the immediate future.

In other news, Young Mitchell fough Bob Fitzsimmons this month in a fight many feel will determine the next challenger for Dempsey's middleweight title. Dempsey defeated Mithcell a year ago, but won 3 straight KO victories after that and was still considered the #1 contender. Fitzsimmons has been flirting with a title chot for quite some time and has been in the #2 contender slot for awhile now, even though he has defeated Young Mitchell twice in the past (in '87 and '88).

This month, the battled out and this time Mitchell comes away with the victory, winning by split decision. It appears that Mitchell will get another title shot.

And finally, in the featherweight division, Young Griffo has made his mark on the weight class by defeating #1 contender, and former champion of the world, Torpedo Billy Murphy by unanimous decision.

HW: James Corbett 23-1-1 (6) TKO10 Pat Killen 34-8-0 (30)

James Corbett continues his rise in the heavyweight division. He won a decsive victory over Pat Killen. He had Killen hurt for most of the fight. Killen couldn't get much done and the fight ended on a bad cut.

July 18, 1890
MW: Bob Fitzsimmons 30-2-0 (27) TKO5 Billy McCarthy 20-0-0 (2)

Bob Fitzsimmons wins a big victory over undefeated Billy McCarthy. McCarthy was hurt and knocked down in the 4th round. He never recovered and Fitzsimmons finished him off in the 5th.

July 22, 1890
LW: Jack Keenan 31-10-0 (17) UD10 Billy Edwards 27-13-4 (5)

Keenan wins by a safe margin over Billy Edwards in a largely boring fight.

July 29, 1890
FW: Young Griffo 19-2-0 (11) UD10 Young Pluto 23-2-0 (20)

Griffo started off very strong but faded down the stretch. It was still enough to win a very close unanimous decision over the former champion (96-94 on all 3 scorecards).

*note, I forgot to move Jack McGinty and he ended up being shceduled by the auto-scheduler. Opps, I had to cancel the fight I had for him.

WBG World Lightweight Title Fight
August 4th, 1890
Jack McAullife (25-0-0 21KO)
vs.
Jimmy Carroll (27-3-0 17KO)

Background Info

Jack McAuliffe won the WBG Lightweight Title in December of 1886 by defeating Jem Carney by TKO in the 10th round. Since then, he has defended his title 4 times, winning every fight by knock out.

Jimmy Carroll lost to Billy Myer a year ago and saw Myer get a shot at the title (losing in the 1st round). He fought and defeated Billy Edwards 3 times since, and defeated Jem Carney by TKO this past April.

Ding.....Ding.....Ding

Round 1
: McAuliffe dominated the round. He had Carroll on the ropes and hurt in the middle of the round. (Round to McAuliffe, 10-9 McAuliffe)

Round 2: An extremely boring round with nothing happening. (Round to McAuliffe, 20-18 McAuliffe)

Round 3: McAuliffe again asserts his domination over Carroll. By the end of the round, Carroll's right eye is swelling up and he was carrying his hands low. (Round to McAuliffe, 30-27 McAuliffe)

Round 4
: Carroll started the round by landing a hard shot that stunned McAuliffe. It would only be temporary, though, as McAuliffe quickly took control of the fight once again and had Carroll on the ropes as the round ended. (Round to McAuliffe, 40-36 McAuliffe)

Round 5: The round starts off going back and forth, but then both fighters seemed to take the round off. In the last minute, McAuliffe started landing shots again and took the round. (Round to McAuliffe, 50-45 McAuliffe)

Round 6: Carroll started the round strong by landing several big shots that had McAuliffe staggered. McAuliffe landed his own big shot that stopped Carroll in his track. (Round to Carroll, 59-55 McAuliffe)

Round 7: McAuliffe floors Carroll midway through the round but Carroll gets up quickly. Carroll protects himself for most of the round but takes a lot of punishment. (Round to McAuliffe 10-8, 69-63 McAuliffe)

Round 8: Carroll comes out looking for the KO, but McAuliffe stays away. Carroll did manage to get in a few hard shots that win him the round. (Round to Carroll, 78-73 McAuliffe)

Round 9: McAuliffe boxed circles around Carroll, but Carroll caught McAuliffe a few times in the round and had McAuliffe hurt. If not for McAuliffe's superios ability, he may have been on the canvas. (Round to McAuliffe, 88-82 McAuliffe)

Round 10
: McAuliffe dominated the round. Carroll may be out of gas. Carroll's right eye is just about closed. (Round to McAuliffe, 98-91 McAuliffe)

Round 11: Carroll is now getting pounded on. The referee looks like he might be close to stopping this fight. Carroll can't see the punches coming. (Round to McAuliffe, 108-100 McAuliffe)

Round 12: With 9 seconds left in the round, the fight is stopped. He can't see the punches coming and is getting pounded on by McAuliffe.

The fight is stopped at 2:51 of the 12th round, your winner by technical knock out, and STILL WBG LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD, JACK McAULIFFE!!

BW: George Dixon 19-1-1 (11) UD10 Young Johnson 25-5-3 (6)

In what was supposed to be a close, tough fight, Frank Murphy surprises everyone by laying Griffin out only a minute into the fight.

George Dixon, on the other hand, did exactly what the experts thought he would. He put on a clinic and easily won one of the most one-sided fights I've ever seen.

August 17, 1890
WW: Paddy Duffy 31-4-1 (10) UD10 Charles Gleason 20-4-1 (18)

Boxer versus brawler, and in this case, the boxer won. Duffy easily took the first two rounds, but Gleason fought back hard and had Duffy hurt through the 3rd and 4th rounds. But the Duffy took control of the fight and won the next few rounds. Gleason fought back hard in the last 2 rounds, but it wasn't enough. Duffy won the fight 96-94 on all 3 scorecards.

August 23, 1890
MW: Tom Barry 19-6-1 (9) TKO6 Irish Jack Burke 31-8-1 (20)

The former champion, Irish Jack Burke, in the twilight of his career fought hard against a much younger Tom Barry. It was a close fight for the first 5 rounds, but in the 6th Barry would cut Burke underneath his right eye, knock him down, and then cut him again over his left eye. The cut over the left eye was a terrible cut and the fight had to be stopped.

Siddons dominated the fight for the most part. Leary's left eye was swealing up badly and he was cut over the right eye in the 2nd round. His corner kept the cut under control, but in the 6th round, Siddons busted it wide open and the fight was immediately stopped.

September 3, 1890
BW: Walter Croot 17-0-0 (8) SD10 Bill Baxter 21-4-2 (8)

Walter Croot barely edges out #1 contender Bill Baxter. It was a back and forth battle that could have gone either way.

September 6, 1890
WW: Tom Meadows 21-2-1 (14) SD10 Jack C McGee 27-7-3 (25)

Another very close battle. In what could be considered the fight of the year, Meadows narrowly beats McGee in a fight that never saw the action dwindle. Both fighters scored a knock down in the fight, and in the end, it's Meadows that comes out ahead.

September 11, 1890
HW: Es' Kia Sexwole 25-4-1 (16) KO8 Greg Williams 37-9-1 (25)

A close fight up until the end. Sexwole had knocked Williams down in the 2nd round, but Williams fought back, but then he was kocked down again in the 8th and could not answer the bell.

September 13, 1890
FW: Abe Willis 17-6-2 (2) UD10 Fred Johnson 32-7-3 (20)

Willis wins easily over Johnson. Johnson had kept it close for the first half, but Willis ran away with it from the 5th round on.

September 21, 1890
LW: Billy Myer 35-5-1 (27) KO8 Billy Young 26-12-0 (18)

This fight was a race against time. Myer had complete control over the fight, but in the 2nd round, he was cut over his left eye, and then he was cut over his right eye in the 5th. Myer dominated Young, but Young managed to get a few shots in. Just enough to cause the cuts. But Myer's corner gets the cuts closed and Myer was able to finish Young off in the 8th.

September 25, 1890
MW: Bill Gabig 22-7-2 (10) TKO8 Jim Hall 19-3-0 (16)

Gabig was winning the fight, but not by much, when the fight was stopped on cuts in the 8th round.

Paddy Sullivan (20-2-1 6KO)
vs.
Paddy Duffy (32-4-1 10KO)

Background Info

This will be Sullivan's 5th title defense. Sullivan and Duffy have fought twice, with Sullivan winning both fights. A UD win in 10 rounds back in 1884, and last year when Sullivan successfully defended his title, winning by a majority decision. Duffy has fought 6 times since his first attempt at the title, winning every fight by decision.

Ding.....Ding.....Ding

Round 1: A back and forth, but not very eventful, opening round. (Round to Sullivan, 10-9 Sullivan)

Round 2: Sullivan controls the entire round, easily outpointing Duffy. (Round to Sullivan, 20-18 Sullivan)

Round 3: Duffy had Sullivan in trouble halfway through the round. He landed a few hurting shots and kept Sullivan off balance through the round. (Round to Duffy, 29-28 Sullivan)

Round 4: A close, back and forth round which Duffy barely wins. He came on strong at the end of the round to win it. (Round to Duffy, 38-38 Even)

Round 5: Duffy does just a bit more again in this round. Both fighters are getting some decent shots in, but no one has landed any meaningful punches, except for Duffy in the 3rd round. (Round to Duffy, 48-47 Duffy)

Round 6: Sullivan appeared to have taken the round off. It was slow for the most part, but Duffy slowly gained momentum, and at the end of the round, Duffy was letting Sullivan have it. He landed several decent shots in the last 20 seconds. (Round to Duffy, 58-56 Duffy)

Round 7
: A pretty uneventful round as neither fighter did much. Sullivan turned on the jets in the last 30 seconds and landed a few nice shots to steal the round. (Round to Sullivan, 67-66 Duffy)

Round 8
: Sullivan steals another round by turning it on in the last minute. Duffy hasn't done much of anything since the 6th round. (Round to Sullivan, 76-76 Even)

Round 9: The fight has seemed to have fallen into a routine of having nothing happen in the first 2 minutes, only to have Sullivan come alive in the last minute to steal it. 3rd round in a row which Duffy does nothing and Sullivan only does something in the last minute. (Round to Sullivan, 86-85 Sullivan)

Round 10: Sullivan does nothing, Duffy does a little. A bit of a reversal, but Duffy landed a shot here and there throughout the round instead of just in the last minute. (Round to Duffy, 95-95 Even)

Round 11: Again, unevent first half, second half dominated by Sullivan. Except this time, Sullivan landed some harder shots and Duffy looked like he was ready to hit the canvas. He was unsteady at the end. (Round to Sullivan, 105-104 Sullivan)

Round 12: Duffy drops Sullivan early in the round. Sullivan missed a winging hook, Duffy comes underneath and lands a combination that drops him. Sullivan got up quickly and was able to survive. Duffy tried to end it, but he just couldn't find Sullivan as the champ did a masterful job of defense. As the round came to a close, Sullivan was opening up more and got in a few shots of his own. (Round to Duffy 10-8, 114-113 Duffy)

Round 13: Sullivan easily wins the round. There is some swelling on the right eye of Duffy. (Round to Sullivan, 123-123 Even)

Round 14: Looks like another fight will come down to the wire. Sullivan was easily winning the round, but at the very last second, Duffy comes out of nowhere and drops Sullivan for the second time in the fight. He was saved by the bell at the count of 1. I'm only scoring the round 10-9 for Duffy instead of a 10-8 because of how dominating Sullivan was up until the very last second (Round to Duffy, 133-132 Duffy)

Round 15: Sullivan goes down for a 3rd time. Sullivan is just simply exhausted. He was a fighter who had completely run out of gas. He was knocked down again in the last seconds of the round. He got up and we'll go to the scorecards, but this last knock down had to have won it for Duffy. (Round to Duffy 10-8, 143-140 Duffy)

My Scorecard: 143-140 Duffy
Ringside Expert: 144-140 Duffy

After 15 rounds of action, we go to the score cards.

Judge 1 scores the bout 144-139
Judge 2 scores the bout 144-139
Judge 3 scores the bout 146-137

All for your winner by unanimous decision, and NEW WBG WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD, PADDY DUFFY!!!

October 1890 Results

October 6, 1890
MW: Bill Gabig 23-7-2 (11) SD10 Bob Turnball 26-17-0 (11)

Gabig dominated the early rounds, but then Turnball knocked Gabig down in the 5th round and cut him over his right eye. Turnball won many of the rounds from then on out, but Gabig did just enough to edge out a win.

October 13, 1890
WW: WBG Title: Paddy Duffy 32-4-1 (10) UD15 Paddy Sullivan 20-2-1 (6)

October 20, 1890
HW: James Corbett 24-1-1 (7) KO2 Jim Harvey 29-6-1 (13)

Corbett completely dominates and comes up with a 2nd round KO.

October 27, 1890
LW: Joe Heiser 21-15-1 (2) UD10 Jem Carney 26-8-0 (13)

A controversial decision. Both the ringside expert and I agreed that Carney had won the fight by at least 2 rounds, but the 3 judges saw it differently and Heiser gets the unanimous decision win.

Any chance that Corbett's win puts him in line for a crack at John L?

Very good chance of that happening. Sullivan isn't set to defend the title until next spirng (April, May or June). Corbett will have to fight once more before then. Peter Jackson has already fought Sullivan for the title twice and lost both times. Dick Matthews just lost to Denver Ed Smith by spilt decision (Smith was ranked 24th) so he free falled down the rankings (outside of the Top 10 now). Corbett's win put him at #3 and Matthews' lost bumped Corbett up to #2.

So as long as Corbett wins his next fight, and I'll probably throw him a sit-up (but I did that for Dick Matthews and look what happened), he'll fight Sullivan next year.

November 1890 Results

November 4, 1890

LW: Billy Frazier 31-5-1 (11) SD10 Billy Edwards 27-14-4 (5)

Both fighters are past their primes, and both needed this fight to put get them back to a chance for the title and the action showed it. It was a back and forth struggle that easily could have gone either way. Fraizer barely edges out a split decision win.

November 11, 1890
FW: Frank Murphy 19-4-2 (12) MD10 Charles Bull McCarthy 17-1-1 (8)

This was McCarthy's chance to jump up into the top 10, but he falters a bit against Murphy. Frank Murphy took most of the early rounds, but McCarthy stormed back. It just wasn't enough on two of the three scorecards.

November 17, 1890
MW: Tom Barry 20-6-1 (10) UD10 Billy Baker 25-14-3 (3)

This fight wasn't even close. Barry wins in a landslide.

November 23, 1890
FW: George Dixon 20-1-1 (11) UD10 Tommy Warren 21-5-1 (14)

Dixon moves up in weight. Warren easily took the first round, but Dixon found a stride in the 2nd and dominated most of the rounds. In the 6th and 9th rounds, Warren had Dixon hurt, but he couldn't finish him off. Dixon won all of the other rounds and the fight 97-93 on all 3 scorecards.

Johnny Murphy (23-0-1 19KO)
vs
Walter Croot (18-0-0 8KO)

Background Info
This is Johnny Murphy's first title defense since winning the title from Nunc Wallace in January. Walter Croot has defeated former champions Bill Baxter and Gerald Tickering in his quick rise up the rankings. This will be his first title fight.

Ding.....Ding.....Ding

Round 1: A semi-active first round. Croot was hurt early, but he scored a lot of points in the second half of the round. (Round to Croot, 10-9 Croot)

Round 2: And the fight is over! Croot opens up gash in the middle of Murphy's right eyebrow. The cut is so bad that the fight is stopped immediately.

The referee has stopped the fight at the 18 second mark of the 2nd round. The winner of the fight by technical knock out, and NEW WBG BANTAMWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD, WALTER CROOT!

December 1890 Results

December 3, 1890
HW: Peter Jackson 27-4-3 (14) UD10 McHenry Johnson 24-12-1 (9)

Peter Jackson easily takes care of business, winning just about every round.

December 11, 1890
BW: Romeo Durand 19-4-1 (9) UD10 Paddy Snow 20-8-4 (2)

The fight was competative for the first 5 rounds, but then Durand won rounds 6 through 10 to win the decision.

December 22, 1890
WW: Jack C McGee 27-8-3 (25) KO3 Lonnie Cadaress 29-10-0 (23)
FW: Young Pluto 23-3-0 (20) KO4 Hank Brennan 17-11-1 (6)

McGee knocked Cadaress down in the 1st round and then again in the 3rd. However, they did have a very exciting and action packed 2nd round. In the end, McGee just had way too much punching power for Cadaress.

Young Pluto destroyed Brennan, scoring his 21st KO of his career.

Retired Fighters - 1890

Heavyweights

Tom Lees - 31-12-3 (21 KO)
Lees never saw much success. He was journeyman that saw much success against most fighters, but he just never could crack into the top 10 for long. He got close in 1885 after he defeated Charley Mitchell by KO in the 10th round. But in 1886 and 1887, Lees would lose fights to Billy Wilson and Greg Williams which took him out of the picture. He was never able to regroup after that and continued for the next few years ranked in the 20s and 30s. He won his last fight in November and retired.

Welterweights

Edward Banks - 28-17-10 (8 KO)
Banks was a top 10 fighter from 1882 to 1887, but never fought a title match. In 1885, just as he was at the height of his popularity, he started dropping matches, taking him out of the title picture, noteably two early round KO loses to Lonnie Cadaress. From Dec. 1886 to May 1887, Banks would lose 5 straight fights taking him out of the top 10 for the rest of his career. He ended his career with 3 straight loses before retiring in January 1890.

"The Nonpariel" Jack Dempsey (20-0-1 15KO)
vs.
Bob Fitzsimmons (32-2-0 29KO)

Background
Despite losing to #1 contender Young Mitchell in the middle of last year, Bob Fitzsimmons was granted a title shot by the champion Jack Dempsey, who had already defended his title against Mitchell in the middle of 1889. This will be Dempsey's 6th title defense since winning the belt in May of 1886 from Irish Jack Burke in a split decision.

Ding.....Ding.....Ding

Round and Fight ratings explained in next post

Round 1: (6) Dempsey starts off strong but Fitzsimmons battles back in the last minute. (Round to Dempsey, 10-9 Dempsey)

Round 2: (5) Fitzsimmons dominated the round and had Dempsey hurt several times. Dempsey couldn't get anything going. (Round to Fitzsimmons, 19-19)

Round 3: (0) A slower round with Fitzsimmons getting the better of it. (Round to Fitzsimmons, 29-28 Fitzsimmons)

Round 4: (2) Fitzsimmons dominates another round. Dempsey is in real trouble here. Fitzsimmons is completely dictating the action and Dempsey can't get anything going. (Round to Fitzsimmons, 39-37 Fitzsimmons)

Round 5: (5) Fitzsimmons drops Dempsey to the canvas twice, with Dempsey being saved by the bell the second time. Dempsey is getting tired from the beating he's taking while Fitsimmons still has a full tank of gas. This one might not last much longer. (Round to Fitzsimmons 10-7, 49-44 Fitzsimmons)

Round 6: (2) Another round with the challenger dominating. (Round to Fitzsimmons, 59-53 Fitzsimmons)

Round 7: (2) Fitzsimmons again drops Dempsey to the canvas. He gets up to take another beating. Dempsey is exhausted. (Round to Fitzsimmons 10-8, 69-61 Fitzsimmons)

Round 8: (8) Dempsey goes down again. He was able to answer the count once again, only to get knocked back down to the canvas. On the count of 9, he was getting to his feet, but he just couldn't beat the count.

The fight comes to an end at 2:57 of the 8th Round, your winner by knock out, and NEW WBG MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD, BOB FITZSIMMONS!

Fight Rating: 30

Round and Fight ratings

In an effert to make clear (not only to you, but to me as well) how good a round is and good a fight is overall, I created a system to quantify it. Each round is given a number based on the points each fighter has at the end of the round.

If a fighter scores 0-4 points, it counds as -2. Between 5-9, I give it a 0, 10 to 16 gets 2, 17-23 gets 4, 24-30 gets 7 and 30+ gets 8. I do this for both fighters.

And since people love close, high action rounds, if both fighters score over a certain amount, I add in a bonus (or penalty if they are both really low). If both score 0-5, I add another -2, If both are over 10, I add 2, If both are over 16, I add 5 and if both are over 20, I add another 9 points (that's not cummulative)

After the fight, I add all of the round ratings together to get a Fight Rating.

And then I go through another round of bonuses. If a fighter has two rounds back-to-back that score over 10, I add in another 5 points to the Fight Rating (for each time it happens, including if it should have back-to-back-to-back 10+ rounds).

I'm sure this is going to evolve down the line. I have not tested this ratings system at all, so changes are bound to happen.

My hope is to use this ratings system so I can have end of year awards, like "Fighter Of the Year" (involved in the best fights overall), "Fight Of The Year", "Round(s) of the Year", and Top 10 lists, etc. etc.

Obviously, I'm only going to use this on fights I watch, which right now are championship fights, and fights involving two fighters in the Top 10.

January 20, 1891
WW: Jack McGinty 23-1-0 (21) KO3 Dany Kyer 23-9-2 (11) - FR: 8

McGinty with an easy KO victory.

In Other News

Chalres Gleason loses in a big upset to fringe contender Frank Brooks. The fight was stopped in the 3rd round due to cuts. Gleason's star has faded in the last few years. He had a meteoric rise up the rankings winning his first 11 fights by KO. However, he has gone 2-4 in his last 6 fights.

Round 2: (0) McCarthy starts off fast and stays in control of the round. (Round to McCarthy, 19-19 Even)

Round 3: (6) A very close round. McCarthy steals it at the end with a late flurry. (Round to McCarthy, 29-28 McCarthy)

Round 4
: (6) Dixon was in control most of the round, but didn't do much. McCarthy comes on strong late in the round and puts to gether several nice combinations. (Round to McCarthy, 39-37 McCarthy)

Round 5: (0) Dixon controls the round and lands some nice punches. (Round to Dixon, 48-47 McCarthy)

Round 6: (-2) McCarthy stuns Dixon early in the round, but not much happens after that. (Round to McCarthy, 58-56 McCarthy)

Round 7: (2) Dixon takes control again in this back and forth struggle. (Round to Dixon, 67-66 McCarthy)

Round 8: (6) A very close, back and forth round. Both fighters got in some good shots. (Round Even, 77-76 McCarthy)

Round 9: (2) Dixon takes control of the fight again with a nice round. (Round to Dixon, 86-86 Even)

Round 10: (2) McCarthy is fading. He is starting to noticeably slow down and Dixon is taking advantage of it, staying on the outside and scoring from a distance. (Round to Dixon, 96-95 Dixon)

Round 11: (0) McCarthy was hurt early in the round and Dixon jumped on him. McCarthy did a great job avoinding the punishment, but he's exhausted out there now. (Round to Dixon, 106-104 Dixon)

Round 12: (6) A close round. McCarthy gets his second wind and keeps pace with Dixon in this round. He steals the round with a late flurry. (Round to McCarthy, 115-114 Dixon)

Round 13: (6) A back and forth round. The champion showing what "championship rounds" are all about. He landed several nice shots, but then gets stunned and Dixon took control. But as the round closed, McCarth again steals the round with some late action. (Round to McCarthy, 124-124 Even)

Round 14: (2) McCarthy couldn't keep the pace up. Dixon hurt him a few times in the round and completely dominated McCarthy. (Round to Dixon, 134-133 Dixon)

Round 15: (0) McCarthy came out trying to win one last round, but he gets caught by Dixon and is sent to the canvas. He beats the count and survives the round, but in this very close fight, that knockdown may be the difference maker. (Round to Dixon 10-8, 144-141 Dixon)

Ringside Expert: 144-140 Dixon

Judge 1 scores the bout 142-142, a draw

February 13, 1891
LW: Billy Myer 37-5-1 (29) UD10 Jack Keenan 33-10-0 (17) (FR: 39)

A one sided decision. Some of the rounds were action packed, but of the ones there were not, they all easily went to Myer.

February 25, 1891
BW: Nelson Moreno 22-7-4 (5) SD10 Nunc Wallace 22-2-2 (11) (FR: 8)

A boring fight. Could be the beginning of the end for Nunc Wallace's career.

February 26, 1891

March 2, 1891
MW: Bill Gabig 24-7-2 (11) UD10 Tom Henry 30-12-2 (14) (FR: 15)

Gabig won the fight easily. Some rounds had some action, but most did not.

March 9, 1891
HW: Peter Jackson 28-4-3 (14) UD10 Peter Courtney 31-3-0 (17) (FR: 22)

Peter Jackson wins again, although it was not by much. Courtney put up a hell of a fight.

March 18, 1891
FW: Torpedo Billy Murphy 28-5-0 (21) UD10 Ray Planter 27-7-3 (15) (FR: 46)

Leading canidate for fight of the year to date, as well as round of the year. Round 6 of this fight will go down as one of the best rounds ever (The Commentary of the round to follow in the next post).

March 21, 1891
BW: Paddy Kelly 21-0-1 (8) MD10 Tom Cassidy 16-3-1 (4) (FR: 10)

A back and forth fight that saw Kelly string together a few winning rounds at the end of the fight to barely edge out Cassidy.

March 29, 1891
WW: Dan Murphy 20-12-0 (9) KO8 Bob Lyons 24-9-2 (11) (FR: 6)

Had a few good rounds in there, but some of the rouds were so dull and uneventful that it brought the fight rating down.

New Organization - Australian Boxing Organization (ABO)
Due to Peter Jackson's inability to gain another title shot, and the lack of champions in other divisions, boxing's popularity in Australia and New Zealand has lowered. As a result, a new organization has formed exclusively for Australian and New Zealand fighters in an attempt to get the public rallying for boxing again, and in part to protest Corbett getting a title shot instead of Peter Jackson. The first title fight for the new organization will occur in July for the ABO Featherweight title.

The formation of this continental organization has been met with some negativity, but mostly positive. Enough so that there are talks of other, continental organizations forming. Many seem to like the appeal of national pride that goes along with this.

April 1891 Results

* - I'm stopping the fight ratings for now. I need to rework the system.

April 4, 1891
MW: Billy McCarthy 22-1-0 (4) UD10 Jim Hall 21-4-0 (18)

A very entertaining fight that went back and forth. McCarthy won a very narrow unanimous decision (96-94, 95-94, 95-94). McCarthy knocking down Hall in the 8th round was what tilted it in McCarthy's favor.

April 8, 1891
BW: Joe Gates 16-3-2 (7) UD10 Elias Hamilton 22-9-1 (18)

A pretty boring bout that finished off with a nice round. Gates takes the UD, 97-92, 98-91, 98-91.

April 11, 1891
HW: Peter Jackson 29-4-3 (14) TKO2 Billy Wilson 26-11-0 (15)

Wilson never had a chance. His nose was broken in the first round, and the ref stopped it in the 2nd due to it.

April 17, 1891
LW: Billy Myer 38-5-1 (29) UD10 Jimmy Carroll 29-4-0 (19)

The fight went back and forth with a few good rounds, but it was mostly a boring fight. Myer wins the last 3 rounds on 2 scorecards (and 2 of the last 3 on the other) to get the win. (97-94 on all 3 scorecards).

April 22, 1891
WW: Jack C McGee 29-8-3 (26) KO9 Jack McGinty 24-1-0 (22)

McGee easily won most of the early rounds, but McGinty put together a few good rounds and had almost caught up on the scorecards when McGee dropped McGinty for the 10 count in the 9th round.

April 27, 1891
FW: Tommy Warren 22-6-1 (14) UD10 Johnny T Griffin 17-2-0 (13)

Warren won most of the rounds, but what made it dramatic was Griffin beat Warren badly in the 5th round. Warren was saved by the bell and regrouped. (95-93, 95-93, 96-92)
