Alright Boyz, here we go! NBA 2k10 First Impressions Thread

I had a root canal this morning and just as it ended, the local gamestop was opening so I've just been messing around with NBA 2k10 for about an hour.

A few initial thoughts:

1) A release day patch is out. Nice to see. Hopefully, it will fix the issue of excessive double teaming (even when players are instructed not to double team) that some have been complaining about.

2) From practice mode at least, it seems easier to perform the various isomotion manuevers. The complexity/level of control has always been awesome, but some of the moves were very difficult for me to pull off last year. It feels easier so far this year.

3) At least from practice mode, shooting percentages feel more realistic out of the box.

4) The new menu system is very clean looking. Still not sure if it is more user friendly.

5) The option to "play now" any of the games on tonight's actual schedule is a nice touch. Will be interesting to see how closely they update the "living rosters" this year.

About to dive into some actual games now.

cool. i really got a lot of playing time out of 2009, so given that the price has never been excessive on the game i'm likely to pick up 2010 at some point.

I'm going to read through the "Little Things" thread at OS and it will convince me to pick this up after work.

Just played my first "NBA Tonight" game. I was the 76ers vs the Raptors. It was 5 minute quarters with all default settings. I started out strong in the 1st quarter behind 8 from Iggy, but I got smoked the rest of the game as Turkoglu and Bosh both got it going. Behind 14 points from each of them, they beat us 51-27.

A few quick thoughts:

Presentation is absolutely incredible in this "NBA Tonight" game. They talked about stuff that was going to happen later this week in the real NBA and it came across as very natural. The post game show is very cool as well. Plenty of clutch highlights that are saved and can be reviewed, as a well as a slide show of each player's key moments (35 pictures), among many other cool post game features. My only complaint is I'm not a fan of the music.

Speaking of highlights, I had an awesome alley-oop that I never could have completed in the previous versions. The alley-oop system has clearly gotten a lot of love and it feels really good right now. My best play was an early alley-oop from Louis Williams to Iggy. I fell in love with trying to do other highlight plays and had lots of errant passes, including 2 that were tipped away by Bosh as he caught up to the play.

Tipped passes was a common theme of the game. You definitely have to think more about where/who you are passing with than previous versions.

About to switch to 12 minute quarters and try seeing if I can beat a weaker team, maybe the Kings.

Edit to add: The off ball movement is a much improved aspect of the game as well. Great off-ball movement from the Raptors and decent from my own guys.

Looking at OS forums I'm seeing there is a pretty big problem with frame rate issues. Are you seeing this?

I was reading that too, but anytime people have talked about framerate issues in games I've never noticed. Guess I don't have as quick an eye.

1st game I didn't see it at all. That was in a generic arena that was set in London.

2nd game, I'm playing at the Wachovia Center and towards the end of the 1st quarter, I just saw some very ugly frame rate dips. Almost made me miss a wide open 3 by Kapono. The first 10 minutes were smooth, but the last 2 minutes of the 1st quarter were bad.

Edit: I'm going to install to the Hard Drive after this game and see if that makes any difference.

Always install to the HD!

Not sure if it will help this game though...

The entire 2nd quarter had horrible frame rate drops. I usually don't notice frame rate drops when others mention them, but in this game you can't miss them when they are occurring. I'm stopping this game at the half - I'm up 50-47 over the Kings and installing to the hard drive to see if that helps. If that doesn't, I might try some other camera angles (I'm using the default broadcast camera right now.)

I hope so. It's very annoying. Known stadiums that have frame rate issues (per OS) are: Dallas, OKC, Philly, Golden State, etc.

Downloading the game to the hard drive didn't make any difference. My game was clean for the first 6-8 minutes of the 1st quarter and then it started getting little frame rate hits and now it is bad enough that I don't want to finish the game. Changing camera angles hasn't helped either. Because I normally love the NBA 2k series, this is very frustrating. Going to try a my career and see how that goes now.

Some people say it is absent on the PS3. Others say it is less noticable. There is a supposed work around posted on OS that I just read. If you turn zoom down to 3 or less, it supposedly fixes the issue. About to try this with a Philly game now.

Just finished a game with the 90's East All-Stars vs Dallas in "the East All-Star" arena and that game had almost zero frame rate issues and was incredibly fun, although I was surprised that Dallas hung with us most of the game. I guess these teams have been in previous versions, but I've never looked at them before. This is the first time I've played with them ever, and I was surprised to see they have most of the real players I would have picked for the team (no Jordan or Barkley - although maybe Barkley is on the 80's team?) They were ridiculously fun to use. Shaq was just unstoppable inside, Wilkins was fun to drive and finish with, and the point guards were some good passers.

Anyway, about to try the "zoom less than 3 workaround" right now.

The zoom less than 3 did very little good for me in Philly. So, I switched around a few cameras and found that 2k cam with zoom less than 3 did work very well for the 2nd half of my game. However, with about 6 minutes to go, I started getting horrible frame rate hits again. I noticed that the 2k ticker was updating a bunch of real life sports info. I turned off the ticker and my frame rate immediately became much better. So, I'm keeping the ticker off and getting used to the 2k cam again.

Just played my first game of my career. Philly at Orlando. I played with the 2k cam and had the ticker off. It was silky smooth the entire time. Great game too as I felt like guys played a lot like their counterparts. Howard killed me on the boards with offensive putbacks and had a few nice dunks in the paint as well. Rashard Lewis killed me with 3's and Vince did a bit of everything. The Magic won 116-111 in OT. A few of the star's stats:

Howard 19 points, 18 boards, 3 assists, 3 blocks. He shot 9 of 14 including at least 6 dunks. He had 9 offensive boards.

Vince had 27 points, 4 boards, and 5 assists. He shot 10 of 22 including 2 of 6 from the arc.

Lewis with 18 points and 4 boards. He shot 4 of 12 from the arc.

Iggy kept me in the game with 31 points on 12 of 20 shooting, 2 of 4 from the arc, and 5 of 5 from the line.

Young with 22 points on 8 of 16 shooting. Kapono with 10 points was our 3rd leading scorer. He shot 4 of 7 and 2 of 3 from the arc.

Is the 2k cam on 3 zoom a legit camera view? Do you feel like you're having to give up a lot to get good framerates?

I liked the default broadcast camera, particularly for fast breaks, but I've always been a fan of the 2k cam (going back to many years of using it in College Hoops) and definitely consider it a legit camera view. In fact, since I switched back to that camera I'm playing much better defense. Despite that, I'm still thinking that the ticker may be the main problem and may give the broadcast camera another shot with the ticker off.

I was planning on getting the console version to play it on the bigscreen but with these framerate issues I might wait to read what people have to say about the cheaper PC version and get that after I build a new desktop.

Anyone out there playing the PS3 version, they often have more issues than 360 versions of the same game but going by what Eaglesfan27 said it might actually be better? I'll have to browse on OS for a few days.

Played a half then played CH2K8. Stuckey had 11 assists for me at halftime.

My initial impression is bleh. Is there anyway to turn off the damn defensive assist? I feel like I have no control over my guy on defense.

Saw a little bit of the framerate issue but change cameras and I was fine.

I played a couple games last night. I was running into a lot of frame rate issues - I turned off the ticker and the problem still existed. I did not change the camera view yet. I'll try that tonight and I'll hopefully get a better game. I do have a problem with the AI double teams. I couldn't get anything going in the post because as soon as I got any of my bigs the rock two or three guys double teamed me. I also have problems with ally-oops. A few times I was just trying to pass the by close to the basket and for some reason I was attempting ally-oops instead. Overall I did really enjoy the game - I'm hoping a patch fixes the frame rate issues though.

And for 360 players... any chance we get a crew together? It would be sweet to get a crew of our own "My Players".

Saw that Abner gave his nod to NBA Live over 2K10 due to the framerate issues and lackluster defensive AI on 2K10. Guess I'll sit this one out for a week or two and see what happens. I was ready to buy 2K10 last night until these framerate issues popped up.

I went out and got both games. (lots of trade ins)

I didn't tweak any sliders and played both on all-star, 10 minute quarters, Utah at Denver (me being Denver)

I feel like I need a shower for saying this. . . I had more fun with Live.

Still real early. I have to do some slider tweaks on both games. But that sentence above never would have been said by me last year or the year before. EA is making strides with their basketball title.

I hear that stats are very poor in NBA Live's franchise, but I've heard that Live's gameplay is more fun from several of my friends who I trust. I'm looking forward to hearing more Live impressions as I may pick it up this year.

Arggg - I haven't bought a b-ball game in three years and of course this year Live decides to actually be the better game - after I bought 2K. Like I said in my previous post - I'll be happy with 2K if they fix the frame rate issues. Still mind blowing how they could release a game with a frame rate issue.

I've read the same things. The stats in sim mode are supposed to suck hard. I guess the trades are horrific as well.

With basketball being an 82 game schedule and Madden being as good as it is this year. (especially after the next patch), I'm not sure I'll get deep into a dynasty this year anyway.

I love the my player feature in 2k. (draft combine was a fun game)

It's also early. We'll see what happens to the games after slider tweaks and such. I'm still shocked at my early impressions on the games though. I've been the biggest fanboy of the 2k series there is. For me to sit on the couch with the revelation that I'm having more fun with the EA game was stunning to me. I'm looking forward to playing both some more later in the week to see if those thoughts hold up.

EF/Troy - at this point would you say 2k9 was a better game than 2k10? Other than isomotion being easier to pull off, are there any other clear upgrades so far?

EDIT - obviously my player is a big one

I'll buy it this weekend but just because of "My player" mode. I played the combine and it was great plus RPG modes in sport games (NHL, FIFA, MLB the show, etc) are my favorite ones, even when nobody has developed a really good one yet.

I don't think you can glance off the "isomotion being easier to pull off one" That's huge in itself. 2K9 felt like someone else was playing the game half the time.

I've only played a game. I don't really have enough ammo to answer your question with now.

I'll play these a lot over the weekend and have a lot more definitive answers Saturday night.

The isomotion is huge. I also really enjoy the alley-oops, the passes being more off target, guys just bobbling passes, etc. Even with the frame rate issues, I've enjoyed my 2k10 games more than any game of 2k9 that I played. If they can fix the defensive rotations and the frame rate issues, I think 2k10 could be a great game.

I refuse to buy this game simply because they're calling the 11th game in the franchise the "tenth anniversary edition."

Helpful tip I saw on the OS forums. I don't have the game yet but this "snap effect" on the player control in the demo was annoying.

To disable this feature visit the controller settings and lower the slider from 50 to 0.

I wish I could explain how help defense works in NBA 2k10, but just know every time some guy is left wide open, more than likely it was because of the Computer Assist.

I had my Pistons play against two teams. The Miami Heat and the Bucks. In both games I could not stay in front of anyone. If I knew Wade was going baseline in 2k9, I would hold the lockdown D button and move the joystick in that direction and cut him off.

However the CPU assist would snap my defender back into his original position. Sometimes it would even move him in the complete opposite direction. This is when my help defense kicks in automatically to help. So not only is my player not in position, but my help defense kicks in. From that point on, Wade would just pick apart my defense.

So after playing these two teams twice with the assist on and off, the field goal percentages have dropped significantly. (75% and above to 50% and below) It's night and day.

Also I believe playing lock on defense without computer assist does not lower the defender's stamina. If it does, it's minimal from what I can tell. Bumping players out of position has never felt better.

this tip by Ironhead also helps iron out the excessive double teaming

My controller==>controller settings==>Def asst. strength

i´m going to try to adjust the cpus help defense strength in the shot slider as well, although they seem to recover well enough to make it challenging.

In terms of sliders :
-shooting down 5 for all (3pt, close etc)
-backdoor cuts down by like 25
- as well as the alley oop slider in the coaching profiles a bit.
- Foul sliders way up (like allways) .
For ratings-sliders :
-Quickness down
-defensive awareness up for both user/cpu
-help defense up (in the ratings slider it makes for better help D, not more help D)

for global tendencies :

-midrange up a lot
-close/inside down a bit
-alley oop tendency down to 10-20
-flashy passes 10-20

had great games with this basic changes allready that were better than nearly all games i had in a year of 2K9, going to try some slider sets from 2k share later.

Just picked it up yesterday evening. It is much better than 2K9 and i played 2K9 until a couple days ago and had fun with it.

-The new post game is awesome. I can even live with autopost if the freed up button (LT) is used this great.
Rebounding is incredibly fun this year (alas my my player guy is a C)

-the commentary is the bomb, truly amazing. Talking about trades and injury happening around the association, acknowledging hot and cold streaks. Just wow

-although i think all the new presentation things might cause the slowed down frame rate, especially all the stuff going on in the audience and the stadium effects.

-but those little things that happen all over the game are awesome, case in point : 2K Sports

-atmosphere in the stands is great, also varies depending on the score. No more frantic cheering down 20 .

What needs to be adjusted for association are a couple tendencies to get better stats and have the rookies fit in better. The stars need a lower "shot tendency" (the shooting tendencies like 3pt, midrange, close etc aren´t the issue, the global one decides how trigger-happy they are, especially simulated games) and some role players a raise (especially big guys) and then we should be golden
Propably going to do it myself, i´ll put it on 2K share once ready. Will propably be faster than waiting for the real roster guru´s do their thing.

a tip for getting longer quarters than 5 in my player (only 360, only when uploading a Draft Combine player)

1)start game
2)go into settings and change the quarter length
3)then start my player and import your DC guy

whatever you changed the minutes to will carry over in that case.

not tested myself, but read it on OS.
