Hey Coug,

First off, I like the changes you're putting into effect. For a suggestion, I'd like to see increases in ratings happen a little more frequently. To counter that, you could have negative random effects (or something separate from that) become more frequent and nasty as people increase their ratings as authorities start to hone in on the 'infamous pirate scum'. Just a thought. Other than that, I think things are in good shape currently.

I accept the trade offers - haggling is taking up too much time

1. cruise fer turtles
2. If we still have free holds, cruise fer turtles again; else trade & accept whatever offers we get
3. If we have free holds, cruise fer turtles again; else trade

As a suggestion, would be nice if a pirate could say kidnap a skilled person.
i.e. kidnap a shipwright to lessen cost of repairs, a cook to improve crew morale, a rum/grog distiller to lessen the effects of druken debauchary, a skilled cannoneer to add firepower to one's ship, etc.

Just a suggestion.

FYI, I'm not neglecting the turn deadline, but I'm working up the rule revisions so that they will apply beginning with turn 10.

Ne'er weighed in on the changes, but I agree with all the ones proposed so far. Tho, I will say that I'm with JAG on the chance of ratings changes happening more regularly. We've had maybe 1 per turn across the entire game (including new ships, swords, HARR! increases, etc) and some stats haven't shown life of moving at all (ie maybe the more you trade, the better you get at it or the more you plan and raid, the better your rating be).

The Turn 10 Deadline is exactly 24 hours from the time of this post.

FYI, I will be implementing the rules changes for Turn 11 (I don't want to hold the game up any longer to get them in for Turn 10).

Additionally, a Turducken merchant of reasonable repute approaches ye with the following offer: “I know of a gem merchant who caters to nobles in France. He would pay handsomely for the emeralds if they’re as impressive as the rumors suggest. If you would trust me to do so, I will take them on consignment, and then sell them to him. He resides in a French colony some distance away, so this will take some time. To serve as your agent, I would ask for 20% of the final sale price.” How do ye respond?

Feverish Billy Rumsucker:

I be agreein' to yer offer merchant. But I warn ye: if ye play me false, I will find ye, stick a rusty dirk in yer belly, and leave yer entrails out as a feast fer t'seagulls.

TURN 10 REPORT:

Pirate lore o’ th’ day: The word “doubloon” comes from the Spanish doblón, augmentative of dobla, an old Spanish coin, from Latin dupla, feminine of duplus, meaning double.

10 kegs o’ tobacco (+1 crew action) were sold for 3g per cask to the following pirates:
• Spicy Antonio D'Griffin (3)
• Raider Lizzie (3)
• Iron Foot William (2)
• Sterling Silvers Jr. (2)

The turtle craze is at an end. However, several colonial governors have declared various turtle breeds endangered species.

A d6 ship, the “Sinner’s Heart,” is available for sale to the highest bidder.

A cartographer is making some nautical charts of the area. He will pay 2g for each action you take to assist him, and will also provide copies of the charts when they are completed. Only one pirate is needed per action (ties will be broken by reputation).

Quest: Sentinel Rock (inquire with an action)

Three new Brothers have joined the Log Book!

Remember to list a mandatory Drunken Debauchery action if you have one for Turn 11. Also be aware of any crew losses or ship damage, and accept or decline any trade offers.

Note the following changes (also listed in post #4):

Reputation Points (RP) have replaced the pirate’s Harrrrr! rating. Therefore, RP represent another form of ranking among The Brethren, and any tie-breaker situations using reputation would use this number with a random element added in, such as (RP+d10).

Accumulating reputation points will also be the means to improve ratings (or “level up”). Each level will allow the pirate to select a rating to increase (note: ship & crew may not be leveled up in this manner). The levels are 25 RP, 50 RP, 100 RP, 200 RP, and so on upward, doubling the previous number. Pirates who have already attained a level or two may select their improved rating(s) immediately.

RP are earned as follows:

Each unit of gold earned [0.1]

Ships captured (each):
Guano [1]
Food [5]
Resources [10]
Trade goods [20]
Luxuries [30]
Treasure [40]

Successful raids (each):
Fishing village [5]
Coastal town [10]
Harbor city [20]
Fortress [40]
Citadel [50]

Hostage [value #]

Dueling victory [opponent’s RP/10]

Navy ship defeated [variable]

Quests completed [variable]

*A note about Masters and Minions: Masters get full reputation points, and minions half points

**A note about gold: Gold received from other pirates does not count toward reputation! Be aware that this has a significant bearing on Master/Minion relationships.

***A note about cargo: Reputation points are not directly awarded for cargo, but for the gold earned when the cargo is sold off.

****A note about hostages: Due to the notoriety one gains from word-of-mouth, hostages provide reputation points both directly and indirectly (ransom gold).

• The length between Drunken Debaucheries will no longer be tied to reputation. Also, I’m going to add the ability to “buy off” the crew and postpone the next drunk (gold cost = die roll of crew level). Buying off the crew is an action.
• Cargoes will no longer be listed with a (g), which is confusing. They will instead be listed with a (t) to indicate that their value will be multiplied by a trade roll to determine their final worth. Example: [3t guano] Likewise, hostages will be listed with an (h) since ransom values are not tied to trade ratings. Example: [8h hostage].
• I like the random events and will increase their frequency up to 20% chance per pirate per turn. Basically, if the d10 roll is a “1” than it’ll be a negative event, and if it’s a “10” it’ll be a positive one.
• Pirates who are “lost at sea” will no longer be permanently lost unless there is a pirate on the waiting list. However, bad things will tend to happen to pirates who miss consecutive turns.
• Outside of standard trade and ransom actions, a challenged pirate’s assets are frozen until the challenge is resolved, and may not be “stashed” with another pirate.
• NEW ACTION: “Recover Gold.” Gold is considered to always be with a pirate physically unless it is buried. A pirate may bury any portion of their gold whenever they wish as a free action, but retrieving any buried gold requires a separate “Recover Gold” action.

I know it's a turn late, but thinking about future plans, I came up with some more suggestions.

1) Plans should expire after, I dunno, 5 turns or something. It's silly that a city you plotted against back in turn 2 would have the same defenses now, 10 turns later. Probably give some warning of a couple of turns so people have time to use up their current plans or draw up new plans, before implementing this one, tho.

2) Those poor boarders- they suck and there's no way around it. Raiding really is the way to go since the town always stays in the one place and good raiding adds to both planning and raiding. At least cruisers can go crusing for stuff like turtles from time to time. But poor boarders- they're at the mercy of crusing rolls and they don't really get anything special for their boarding ability. So why not merge boarding and cruising into one skill like raiding is- that way it is used in both rolls. Either that or make better boarders get better treasure- instead of the current loot roll, you get (loot/2 + boarding) or something so that boarding is actually worth a darn. I'm kindof leaning towards the former as the better suggestion since it would make it mirror raiding and there are already enough abilities to worry about balancing while leveling up (trading, dueling, raiding) never mind ship and crew.

3) The whole "bury gold" thing seems too "convenient" or "useless". You can just bury it and boom, it's safe. Or, maybe it's that anyone can stumble across it- then why would you do it at all.

So, basically create a key for it and for the sake of subtlety, call it "Treasure Map" When you take the free action to bury the gold, it creates a "key" for that gold called "treasure map". So, for instance, if I buried 50 gold, I would get an item called "Treasure Map [50g Sterling II]". I could keep it myself or give it to whoever to safeguard. Whoever has it, can use it to access the gold with the "Recover Gold" action. That said, if that someone is lost at sea, so is the map tho maybe it comes up as part of a quest. If that someone is killed, the attacking pirate takes the map.

Maybe for specifics, you have to use a cruising roll to go find the gold again unless you're the pirate who originally went there. That way it's not easy as pie and there's a chance that your son can avenge you before the other pirate finds the gold. Make the cruising goal target of (gold/10). I'm just blueskying at this point...

Not yet, but I’m working on this. It’s something I wanted to implement in this batch (burying and seeking gold was suggested to me by Barkeep49, by the way), but didn’t want to slow the flow of the game any more for more “development” delays.

What I’d like to do is add something like a pirate’s “Intrigue” rating. Good for stealing things, spying on things, and tracking buried gold.

This is an excellent idea. A shelf life for plans. I will implement this.

While I appreciate the input, I disagree. The boarding aspect is multi-tiered for specific reasons. Cruising reflects the pirate’s sailing skill, knowledge of the sea and trade routes, etc. High ratings (and better rolls) basically reflect the ability to know where targets will be. Sometimes, though, you just can’t find anything.

Boarding reflects the pirate’s tactical skill in terms of ship-to-ship combat. Maneuver for broadsides, grapple at the right time, etc. But add to this the power of the pirate’s ship, and the quality of the crew. Even with a d4 ship, a skilled pirate with d6 or better boarding and a d6 or better crew can decimate the guano fleet with regularity. I like the way it’s scaled up…the stronger you become, the juicier targets you can go after. And in the scheme of things, replacing crews and ship damage is pretty cheap at the lower levels.

If anything, raiding should be made more difficult.

Tough call. But since you benefited from the Harrrrr! rating while it existed in the first ten turns, I’m inclined to say no. I might throw you a free wenching, though.

Splitting planning and raiding into two actions aren't necessarily a bad idea. I just think that if you did that, you'd see almost everyone put points into dueling and trade because the other four just aren't worth it. As it is right now- boarding is just such a useless skill from a meta-gaming standpoint. You still only have a d4 shot at finding a ship and the better ships are much higher whereas towns don't move at all. And if you spend your points building up a good cruiser and boarder, well, you're going to be dead from your lack of dueling ability. While you spent your first 3 upgrades and initial boost to get you cruising and boarding up to d8, that other guy has a dueling at d8 and trading at d8 so even if he's not as good at planning or raiding or cruising or boarding, he's getting twice as much loot as you when he succeeds so it cancels out. Never mind that he can just kill you with his d8 dueling, to boot. Much easier to build up gold either by getting better trades or killing another pirate for it. That said, if there's a giant pirate killing spree, I'm guessing it's like Omerta- there's only limited replay value when everything you've worked for is lost so easily.

Just hope this fine game doesn't turn into a pirate dueling/killing fest to get ahead.
Or that dueling/killing doesn't become the easy/fast way to get ahead.

I'm having too much fun pillaging and plundering.
