Why ruin everything that is great?
Sandler to Star in 'Longest Yard' Remake
Jan 27, 2:47 PM (ET) By The Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) - Adam Sandler will star in a remake of the 1974 Burt Reynolds comedy "The Longest Yard," the story of a former football player turned convict who challenges prison guards to a game. Production will begin in June with Columbia Pictures, Sherry Lansing of Paramount's Motion Picture Group said Monday. Sandler will play Paul Crewe, the retired football player, in a role Reynolds originally played 30 years ago. Producers also are in discussion with comedian Chris Rock to play the role of Caretaker and rapper Snoop Dogg to play a member of the team. "Although we plan to update quite a few things, the overall story will remain intact," said Jack Giarraputo, who co-owns the Happy Madison production company with Sandler. "We want to keep the same blend of comedy and grit that made the first one a classic." A side note: As I post this I can hear someone saying, "I bet this will be pretty good." The Mandatory Conflicting Comment on Message Board Thread Theory will come into play.

I'm sure it wont be nearly as bad as the Dawn of the Dead remake that is set to be released in early march.

I don't understand why people feel the need to remake movies, other than to cash in on the name. Get these people together and make something original. Chris Rock and Adam Sandler together would be great, but I don't want to watch the movie comparing Adam Sandler to Burt Reynolds the whole time.
The only movies that I can really understand remakes for are movies that are becoming forgotten because they were released 50 years ago and there just aren't that many people around that remember them. I really don't think "The Longest Yard" falls into that category.

Sandler: You guys want to play the guards?
Snoop: We will hizzle the whizzle fizzle? Sandler: What? Rock: He means yes.

They need to remake rollerball. Not that shitty version from the 70's, but the classic from 02.

While on this subject, has anyone see the preview to the remake of "Walking Tall" starring The Rock?
What the hell?

I saw the previews when I went to go see ROTK. To be honest I wanted it to look good because the Rock is in it, but it looks so incredibly awful that I couldn't lie to myself and tell myself it looked even mediocre. It really, honestly, truthfuly, should have never been made.

I'll admit its been a while since I last watched "The Longest Yard," but I don't remember it being an "Adam Sandler" type comedy. He just seems to me to be the worst possible choice for the part. (Then again it is his company making the movie.)

A friend of mine sent me an email similar to this, but stating that Bernie Mac would star in a movie version of Sanford & Son as Fred Sanford. Just as I was about to go join Elizabeth myself she let me know it was a joke. Not funny.
Nobody can have any original ideas anymore. I blame sampling. If it worked once, it'll work fifty mo' times! Bullshit. |

The movie industry is catching on to what the music industry has known for years - remakes sell. They've been doing the sequel thing for a while, and disguising some remakes with new names, etc., but now they're just going with straight remakes. They're known quantities (most were big hits the first time, so why not the second time?), and if you wait long enough, an entire generation will pretty much consider them new, anyway.
We hit rock bottom when Michael Bolton scored a hit with Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay. After that, I think entertainment executives realized they could throw a bunch of rehashed crap at the wall, and 75% of it would stick. Look at the Fugees - best new artist for a remake of Killing Me Softly? What a disgrace... I don't know who makes me more sick - the companies who put it out, or the people who buy it.

The remakes drive me crazy. I about kicked my TV when one of them damn entertainment shows some years ago and the woman on there announced the remake of Miracle on 34th Street.
WTF?! |

There is no way it is going to be half as good as the original. Hmmm....it might be time to go to the video store and see if I can even find the original. |

The Rock is no Joe Don Baker. THe plot is even different. All that the new "Walking Tall" seems to have in common with the original classic is the usage of a big stick. What, is M&M going to do a remake of "Wonderful, Wonderful?" The original was also based on a true story. I like how in the 3rd film (with Bo Svenson now as the sheriff) they were pretty much filming the 1st film. IMDB trivia... Sherrif Pusser lost for reelection due to the film being shot in a neighboring county and not his own.
Back to Longest Yard... Part of what made the original a great film was its authenticity. Burt played for Florida State and NFL players were used in the film. According to IMDB Nitschke played a game called "Kill the Star" while on the playing field with 'Burt Reynolds'. THe only reason for making this film to me would be to see Ray Lewis playing a similar game with Sandler and Snoop Dog (get a real name) |

I'd rather see Adam Sandler in The Longest Yard than Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson in Starsky & Hutch.
Yuck!
