February 5, 1953
Stanford (4-16) at Arizona (10-9) If there ever was a must win game for a last place team, this was it, and we were able to come away with a 78-71 victory. Thornton had 20 points to lead the team. Hernandez had a monster game as well with 18 points and a dozen rebounds. Code:
February 7, 1953 California (9-10) at Arizona (11-9) We win two in a row and are starting to bring our conference record back to some sort of respectability. The final here was 75-62. McGaha led the team in scoring with 16 and Thornton had 13, but Hernandez had the best game of them all with 12 points and 17 boards. Code:
February 14, 1953 Arizona (12-9) at Arizona State (13-8) We get clobbered on the road today, 73-57. We are in grave danger of mot being in the top 8 and getting to play in the PAC 10 conference tournament. Thornton led our team with 17 points today. Code:
February 19, 1953 Arizona (12-10) at Stanford (4-20) We avoid what would have been the most embarrassing loss of the season by picking up a close road win today, 61-55. Thornton had 20 points and Hernandez scored 12 with 11 boards. Code:
February 21, 1953 Arizona (13-10) at California (11-12) We lose by nearly 20 points today, 76-57. We are not even competitive on the road unless it is Stanford. Thornton had 15 points and Hernandez put up another solid double double performance. Code:
February 26, 1953 Arizona (13-11) at UCLA (8-16) We manage to win a close one on the road and are on the right side of the top 8 in the conference. The final here was 62-59. Our conference record is 6-9. Thornton had 19 and Hernandez added 17. They are my only dependable players, but luckily they will both be back next year. Code:
February 28, 1953 Arizona (14-11) at Southern California (9-17) We played competitively in this game, but in the end, we still don’t have what it takes to consistently pull out the close ones. We lose this game, 74-68. Thornton led the team with 18 and Hernandez scored a dozen. Code:
February Recruiting. We pick up a great looking PG from Spain, Cesar Moreno. He is a 3 star recruit and is ranked as the 17th best foreigner this year. Code:

March 5, 1953
Southern California (10-17) at Arizona (14-12) We drop this home game 72-63 and it puts us in a tight spot to finish top 8. Us and UCLA are tied for the 8th spot. Somebody is getting left out. Grundy had a surprise game with 17 points and Hernandez added 14 with 10 boards. Thornton was injured and is likely to miss the rest of our season. That kills us. Code:
March 7, 1953 UCLA (8-19) at Arizona (14-13) So this basically a play in game for the PAC 10 tournament. We also have a winning record on the line here, but we are without our star player. Gouge will get the nod at point guard today. We choke. Bad. Final score 50-45 and that should do it for us. Now I have to worry about my job. Code:
Washington State beats Arizona State for the PAC 10 Tournament Title. Final PAC 10 Standings Code:

Final Four
NIT Results: IPFW over Arkansas Little Rock. The Matchups #3 Oakland vs. #1 Duquesne #7 Santa Clara vs. #2 Southern Utah In game 1, Duquesne relied on their guard and SF play. Senior SF Tony Richter scored 18 points to lead the team. Richter was ranked #40 overall in 1947. The two Duquesne guards each scored 13 points. But Duquesne got nothing from inside. Oakland did not exactly dominate the paint on offense, but they all but shut out Duquesne inside. Oakland won this one 72-65. Senior SF Carlton Persons, ranked #18 overall in 1948 led the way for Oakland with 15 points. In game 2, Southern Utah owned the paint, with both of their big men combining for 25 points and 10 boards. Santa Clara had their success inside as well, with their two big men combining for 25 points and 16 rebounds. The difference was Santa Clara’s Senior PG, Will Kessel. Kessel was ranked #14 overall in 1948. He was the game high scorer with 22 and gave Santa Clara the 72-62 win and a shot at their 3rd title! The finals was a defensive performance from Oakland. They held Santa Clara to just 55 points on the night. Oakland scored 65 of their own, led by SG Hans Howlett, who finished with 19. Center Will Chambers scored 9 with 12 rebounds to give Oakland their second National Title!

Bethune Cookman’s coach quit his job to take the head job at Southwest Missouri State because it is a higher prestige position! Bethune hired Brian Schultz from Utah State. Brian is 86-41 with Utah State and UCLA. He took Utah to the NCAA tournament both of his years there. Oakland’s Kevin Shoop announced his retirement following the NCAA Title Run. Oakland replaces him with the Drake head coach, Ken Moore. Ken has 4 final fours and a title on his resume. His record as a head coach is 531-246. Drake hired Mike Choe from Southern Utah. Choe brought his team to the Final four last season and is a hot commodity right now. His career record is 349-352. Illinois fired their coach, Doug Hitt. They replaced him with Brian Gott, an assistant at Savannah State. He had some head coaching experience in the past and has a 186-204 record. Montana’s Jay Haugen retired. Montana went out and hired away Delaware State’s head coach, Mike Dowling. Mike has a 408-313 career record. Continuing a long line of replacing coaches, we get to Prairie View. They hired UTEP’s head coach to lead up the once legendary Prairie View squad. Cameron Engle was the head man at UTEP for 8 seasons and he finally got that team to the NCAA tournament. Now Prairie View expects him to get there every year. His coaching record is 170-219. UTEP hired a Delaware State assistant, Dalton Eyler. This will be Dalton’s first ever head coaching job.

How did Penn State miss the tourney? Are they the top rated Big 10 squad in terms of prestige?

I'm prepared to donate significant alumni dollars to the coach who can put the team in the NCAA. Being below UTEP in prestige is a really sorry condition.

Did Northern Arizona fail to even make the tournament last year? Is their Kansas-like run of great regular seasons followed by NCAA choking over?

To answer a few questions:
Northern Arizona did miss the NCAA's this year. I am sure they will be back though. Penn State is the best team in the Big 10, but usually only the post season conference tournament winner from that conference gets in. A few times a high RPI team does make it as well. Not this year.

Arizona, 1953-1954 Season
None of my assistant coaches have left this year, and I keep them all on my staff. Scheduling Phase. No real change to my plans here. We are going to make our OOC pretty easy with just one or two tough games to measure ourselves. Code:
Recruiting Phase. We have three scholarships to offer this year. Center and Point Guard are probably my most pressing concerns going forward, so that is what we will try to address. Of course, sometimes I have to take what I can get. We did not sign anybody in the early period. I feel we are a cinch to grab a point guard that I like. I am also hammering a C and a PF, but I don’t know if we will be able to get either of them.

Arizona Wildcats Roster
Centers 34 Scott Hernandez C Sr 6' 9" 229 Bakersfield, CA Scott does not look imposing but last year he was one of our two stars. If only his defense was better, he would be a real star. He is still the best Center I have had here and gets the start in his senior season, of course. 23 Lon Williams C So 6' 9" 235 Westminster, CA I am going to give young Lon Williams the start at PF this year. With Hernandez’s lack of defense, we need a stopper on the blocks and hopefully Lon can do that. He is our best rated defensive big man. Power Forwards 25 Walter Walsh PF Sr 6'11" 232 Mesa, AZ Walter was our other option to start this year. He is very solid in all aspects of the game, and will be the primary backup in the paint. 50 Andrew Amaral PF Fr 6' 9" 233 Lake Havasu City, AZ Amaral is a true freshman and will need time to develop. He will see very limited time, and probably only for foul problems or injuries. 54 Joaquin Andres PF Fr 6' 6" 250 Silver City, NM Andres has great potential so I give him a red shirt this year. Small Forwards 5 Robert Valliere SF So 6' 7" 231 Vernal, UT Robert gets the start this year at SF. He plays a bit more like a PF on both sides of the court, but has a bit of range and some defensive skills outside. He has great hands and should get his share of steals as well. 43 Jarrett Corley SF Fr 6' 7" 252 Kelseyville, CA Corley is a very similar player to Valliere, but just not quite at his level yet. He back Valliere up and will see some decent time. 2 Steven Gallaway SF Fr 6' 7" 242 Tillsonburg, Canada Steven gets a red shirt this season. Shooting Guards 14 Maximo Lewis SG Jr 6' 6" 198 Las Vegas, NV Max is not bad at all, like I have been saying all along, but there is just nowhere for him to really play. James and Gouge are just better than him. 51 Brian James SG Jr 6' 4" 209 Las Vegas, NV Brian will backup both the SG and PG spots and see plenty of playing time this year. Point Guards 10 Albert Gouge PG Sr 6' 3" 187 Tomales, CA Albert gets the start at Shooting Guard. He plays more like one anyway, and has the best skill set for that position on our team. 42 Preston Thornton PG Jr 5'11" 187 Gilbert, AZ Thornton, of course, gets the start at the point. He was our best player last year and should be again this year. 32 César Moreno PG Fr 6' 3" 217 Gandia, Spain Cesar gets a red shirt this season. I am not going to make many changes in how this team runs this year. We will play a 2-3 defense and help out Hernandez as needed. Not too much pressing as we only run 8 deep, but we will trap on occasion. We will run a balanced offense at a medium pace with Hernandez and Thornton our go to guys.

November 15, 1953
Arizona (0-0) at Nebraska (0-0) We don’t start out the season on the right step this year. A very bad loss, as Nebraska is traditionally one of the worst teams in the nation every year. The final here was 69-65. Thornton opened the season with a monster 26 point game. Hernandez added 13 points and 11 boards. Valliere added 10 of his own, but we got nothing at all from the SG and PF spots. Code:
November 20, 1953 Arizona (0-1) at Oklahoma State (0-1) We now start the season 0-2 with two tough road losses. The final here was 72-69. Thornton again led the team in scoring with 17. Gouge, Valliere and Williams all scored in double figures. The defense didn’t really do its job though. We are not going to win giving up over 70. We need to hold opponents to 65 or less, I think, to win a lot. Code:
November 25, 1953 Arizona (0-2) at Ohio State (0-1) We lose again, and this one was not all that close. The final here was 71-57. I think it is time to get out of the 2-3 zone and play man to man. Thornton was held to 10 and Hernandez scored 14. Code:
November 30, 1953 Providence (0-3) at Arizona (0-3) I cannot explain it, but we get blown out at home here, 85-51. Maybe man to man is not the way to go? Well, I will give it a couple games first. Valliere was out leading scorer with 14 and Williams scored 10. Code:
November Recruiting No recruits have committed yet. I am after a PG and 2 Centers right now.

December 6, 1953
Arizona (0-4) at Iowa (0-2) Finally, the Wildcats get a win on the season! It took everything we had, but we came away 62-61 winners. Thornton had to score 29 points to get it done for us. Valliere added 14 as well. Code:
December 11, 1953 Tennessee Tech (3-3) at Arizona (1-4) We have an offensive explosion today and pick up our first home win of the season, 91-81. Thornton has another huge game with 27. Valliere set a career high with 20 points of his own. Hernandez and Gouge each scored 11 and Hernandez also picked up 11 rebounds. Code:
December 16, 1953 Arizona (2-4) at DePaul (4-3) Our little 2 game winning streak comes to a predictable end here with a final score of 81-72. I have no idea why our defense is playing so bad. I think I am going to slow down the pace of our games. Thornton put up another 21 points and Valliere had 10 of his own. Code:
December 21, 1953 UMASS (3-5) at Arizona ( 2-5) We slowed down the game alight…and held ourselves to just 46 points in a 66-46 beating. Thornton scored 20 and nobody else showed up. Hernandez gave up 20 to the opposing center. Code:
December 26, 1953 Arizona (2-6) at Northern Arizona (4-7) We almost pull off the upset against a Northern Arizona team that has been down on its luck lately. The final here was 65-62. At least this is the type of game I want to be in all the time. Thornton led the team with 15 before he had to leave with an injury. He will miss 2-3 weeks. Hernandez and Brian James each scored 11. Code:
December 31, 1953 Arizona (2-7) at Washington (5-4) I give Max Lewis the start at the point for our conference opener. No surprise here as we lose 68-59. Valliere scored 14 to lead the team and Corley added 12 off the bench. Code:
December Recruiting. PG Paul Lin, from Las Vegas, NV has committed to Arizona. Code:

January 2, 1954
Arizona (2-8) at Washington State (7-4) We get crushed up here to go 0-2 in the state of Washington again. The final was 71-46. Hernandez had 11 points and 11 rebounds while Walsh picked up 12 points off the bench. Code:
January 7, 1954 Arizona State (0-12) at Arizona (2-9) I thought we were having a poor season! More changes to my team. Lon Williams is now our backup in the paint and Walter Walsh gets the start at PF. We will focus on pounding the ball inside until Thornton returns. All that and we pick up a win! 71-64 was the final. Hernandez scored 13 along with 9 rebounds. Lewis also scored 13 from the point position. Valliere added 10. Code:
January 10, 1954 UTEP (9-2) at Arizona (3-9) I catch UTEP as they are having an all time best season. However, we pull off the big win at home, 90-86. Our guards, Lewis and Gouge each scored 15 points. Thornton, in limited duty off the bench scored 10 and Valliere had a team high 18 points. Code:
January 16, 1954 Arizona (4-9) at Arizona State (0-13) Just in time for our in state rival, Thornton returns to the starting lineup, however, we hand the Sun Devils their first win of the season, 66-59. Gouge scored 16 to lead the team while Thornton had 13 and Valliere had 11. Code:
January 21, 1954 Arizona (4-1) at Oregon (5-11) We play our type of game today and it was successful. We win this one 56-48. Hernandez had a double double, with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Gouge and Brian James each scored 10 as well. Code:
January 23, 1954 Arizona (5-10) at Oregon State (7-9) Another perfect performance from us gets us back to 3-3 in league play! We take this one easily, 65-46. Our defense is really playing like I want it to, and we won 2 in a row on the road for goodness sakes! Hernandez with another big game, scoring 14 and grabbing 14 boards. Gouge also scored 14 and Valliere had 13. Code:
January 28, 1954 Arizona (6-10) at UCLA (4-12) We play two more on the road, and then 8 of our final 10 are at home. If we can scrape out a win here, we are in great shape. And we succeed! We take a 77-62 road win to make it three in a row. Thornton finally shakes the rust off and goes for 23. Valliere and Hernandez each had a dozen. Code:
January 30, 1954 Arizona (7-10) at Southern California (11-6) Southern Cal is tied for the league lead, and we are just 1 and a half games back at 4-3. The game came down to the wire, and finally, it was us who found a way to pull it out! The final score was 60-59 and Valliere’s final points of his game high 19 came at the buzzer! Thornton added 10 points. Code:

February 4, 1954
Southern California (11-7) at Arizona (8-10) Like I said, 8 of our last 10 are at home starting today. If we can go 8-2 it would be incredible for this team. We start out with the first of hopefully many more wins, 79-56. Valliere led the team with 19 points. Hernandez scored 12 with 11 rebounds. Thornton added 16 and Gouge had 10. This team has finally figured it out it seems. Code:
February 6, 1954 UCLA (5-14) at Arizona (9-10) The winning continues and we even up our season record at 10-10 with a 72-60 victory today. Thornton had a big game with 23 points. Walsh and Hernandez each scored 10 for us. Code:
February 11, 1954 Washington (12-8) at Arizona (10-10) We pull out a very close 62-59 victory to make it a two way race (or so it seems) between us and Washington State for the regular season title. Hernandez led us to victory with a team high 18 points and 10 rebounds. Thornton added 16. Code:
February 13, 1954 Washington State (15-6) at Arizona (11-10) Wash. State is 1 game ahead of us in the standings. We can tie it up with a win, or with a loss, the regular season is probably over. Well, the long winning streak has come to an end, and now we have to fight to keep the 2 seed. We lose this one 78-66. We made a valiant effort after trailing by 20 at the half. Thornton led the team with 14 points. Code:
February 18, 1954 Arizona (11-11) at Stanford (8-15) We now drop our second game in a row after a 64-56 loss. Valliere led us with 15 points and Thornton added 11. Code:
February 20, 1954 Arizona (11-12) at California (11-12) A one point victory here puts us back into a solid 2nd pace standing in the league table at 9-5. The final here was 56-55. Thornton led the way with 18 points while Valliere added 10. Walsh had 12 boards. Code:
February 25, 1954 Oregon (9-15) at Arizona (12-12) We seem to be losing what we had once found. We take a 62-48 beating at home today. Thornton had 17 points, but the rest of the team was awfully quiet. Code:
Oregon State (12-13) at Arizona (12-13) We get hammered hard again at home, 89-57. Thornton had 23 points and Gouge added 12, but the defense couldn’t stop a thing. Code:
February Recruiting. \We didn’t get that third recruit, but we are in the running for a great looking Center here.

Stanford (11-15) at Arizona (12-14) Right now we are tied with Washington at 9-7 for second place. Four other teams are right behind us at 8-8. We pick up a win by 12 today, 67-55, giving us a great shot at one of the top 4 seeds in the PAC 10 tournament. Thornton got it done, almost single-handedly, scoring 19. Code:
March 6, 1954 California (13-14) at Arizona (13-14) We suffer a very painful loss, at home, to close out the regular season. The final score was 65-61. We finished 10-8 in conference play, tied for 3rd, but we will have the 4 seed. Thornton finished out the regular season with 24 points. Code:

March 11, 1954 (4) Arizona (13-15) vs. (5) Southern California (14-14) We were never in this game and lost our last game of the season, 79-49. Disappointing way to go out, after a great rally in the second half of the season. Hernandez finishes his career with a terrible 2 point game. Walsh finished his career with a 7 point game. Gouge just had 6. Not a pretty way for the 3 seniors to go out. Code:

An amazing debut for the new Illini coach. The talent is junk, but making RPI #70 is a huge leap. Maybe I will have to fork out some $$$ to the program sooner than I expected.

Final Four
First, the NIT results: Norfolk State beat Eastern Washington The Match Ups #11 South Carolina State vs. #2 IUPUI #8 New Mexico State vs. #1 Brown The first game was the lowest scoring game in Final Four history thus far. IUPUI had 2 players score in double digits, and they only had 10 apiece. South Carolina State did just a bit better. Senior PF Harland Kraemer scored 15 to lead all scorers and Sophomore SG Robin Carruth added 13 to give the 11 seed the 55-52 upset victory! Game 2 was much more up tempo. New Mexico State got a great performance from Junior PF Joseph Miller. Miller was ranked #3 overall in 1949. He has already declared for the draft. He scored 25 points this evening. Brown’s Senior SF Jimmie Miller did him one better scoring 27 points. Miller was ranked #16 overall in 1948. Brown also had some better role player and they took this game 87-73. So in the finals we get an 11 seed and a 1 seed….PF Marland Kraemer did all he could do for the underdog South Carolina team. He led the team in scoring with 17 points. Brown just has the better athletes and also had the high scorer of the night in SF Jimmie Miller again. He scored 18 to lead Brown to the National Title with a 62-57 final score! This is Brown’s second Title!

Arizona End of Season Notes
First, we rounded out our class with a real terrific looking center, Alfonzo Baptiste, from Newman, CA. His offense and defensive potential is ranked as an A from my scouts and he is already pretty well developed, if I can trust them. Our three out going seniors will not be draft. Scott Hernandez, Walter Walsh and Albert Gouge will all be missed. SF Jarrett Corley was named to the PAC 10 Freshman Team. PG Preston Thornton was named to the PAC 10 Second Team.

He has started every season so far, although he missed a lot of time with injury in his sophomore year. This year he scored almost 21 points per game, 9.7 rebounds and almost 3 blocks as well. Albano redhsirted last year and had a great freshman season. He scored 14.5 points and got 9.3 rebounds per game. Once again we keep all three of our assistant coaches aboard for another season. Scheduling goes about the same as previous seasons. The toughest game we have is Prairie View. Code:
Recruiting. We have 3 scholarships to offer up this year. The most urgent need is the two guards spots, but as always we will look everywhere for the right type of guy. At the early signing period, we get great news and bad news. The great news is that we landed the #77 overall recruit in the entire nation. This is the first time I got a good break in recruiting. SG Alex Quach, from Eagar, AZ has committed to Arizona! Code:
The bad news is that we are really struggling to find anyone else that fits our program.

Arizona Roster
Centers 23 Lon Williams C Jr 6' 9" 238 Westminster, CA Lon just might be the best low post defensive presence I have had yet. This latest training camp really did him a lot of good. However, he had absolutely no offensive game. He will be our primary backup at the PF and C positions. 1 Alfonzo Baptiste C Fr 6'10" 223 Newman, CA Alfonzo gets the start at center this year as a true freshman. His defense is just slightly behind Williams, but it is still pretty damn good. (73 to 67). The difference is he has a great offensive game. 15 John Lindsey C Fr 6'10" 207 Lac St. Pierre, Canada John gets a red shirt this season. Power Forward 50 Andrew Amaral PF So 6' 9" 233 Lake Havasu City, AZ Andrew will be the secondary backup at the low post positions, but his playing time will be extremely limited. 54 Joaquin Andres PF Fr 6' 6" 250 Silver City, NM After red shirting last season, Joaquin gets the start at PF this year. He is a great defender (rated the same as Baptiste) and should be our man on the boards. He needs to work on his offense, but we should have enough of that on this team. Small Forwards 5 Robert Valliere SF Jr 6' 7" 231 Vernal, UT Robert will again get the start at SF this year. He did a pretty solid job last year and should improve on that performance in his 3rd year with our program. 43 Jarrett Corley SF So 6' 7" 253 Kelseyville, CA. Jarrett will see a bit of playing time at SF and maybe even a little PG when needed. He is still a year or two away from contributing more. 2 Steven Gallaway SF Fr 6' 7" 243 Tillsonburg, Canada Steven will be the primary backup at SF and SG. He does a nice job defending on the outside, and has a very nice looking jumper to go with that. Shooting Guards 14 Maximo Lewis SG Sr 6' 6" 200 Las Vegas, NV As it has been his whole career, Max is just good enough to play for us, but just enough worst than the other guys we have to not really get much court time. 51 Brian James SG Sr 6' 4" 211 Las Vegas, NV Brian finally gets the chance to start in his senior season. He was brought in with plans for him to start 3 or even 4 years, but his development was a bit slow. Point Guards 42 Preston Thornton PG Sr 5'11" 189 Gilbert, AZ Do I even need to say anything about Preston? He is the heart and soul of this team. He gets the start at the point, obviously. 32 César Moreno PG Fr 6' 3" 218 Gandia, Spain Cesar is buried in the depth chart, and will see little, to no playing time. 35 Paul Lin PG Fr 5' 6" 185 Las Vegas, NV Paul gets a red shirt this season. We will be running a man to man defense again this year. I don’t ever plan to change that again. We won’t press or trap much at all, and the double teaming will be very limited as well. On offense we will be very balanced. We will run at an average pace. Thorntono and Baptiste will be our go to guys. I honestly believe this is the best defensive squad I have ever put on the court, and it may be the best offense as well. We are weak on the boards, but I see the best season since I took over the team right here for the taking!

December 20, 1954 Iowa (1-5) at Arizona (2-5) We pick up back to back wins against Big Ten teams. The final here was 72-61. Thornton again leads the team, with 19 points today. Valliere and Williams, off the bench, added 14 each. Andres also had 10 points along with 9 boards. Code:
December 25, 1954 Arizona (3-5) at Prairie View (5-2) I set this game up as a measuring stick. Prairie View is not the same team it was years ago, but they are still very solid. We find out we are not near that level yet (as if we didn’t already know that) as we lose 71-57. Not a single Wildcat scored in double figures, but they had 2. Code:
December 30, 1954 Southern California (2-7) at Arizona (3-6) We pick up a win in our conference opener, which may not have happened for us since I came to this program. The final score was 63-55. I still feel we can compete for the top spot in this league, with this team. Thornton led the team with 16 points. Valliere and Baptiste both added 13. Code:
December Recruiting. Still no new recruits. We have lost the other long shot guy, and now have a SG and PG on our radar.

January 1, 1955
UCLA (3-7) at Arizona (4-6) There was no excuse for dropping this game at home, but we did, 65-54. Thornton led the team with 14 points while James and Baptiste added 10 points each. Their SF lit up Valliere for 17 points today. Code:
January 6, 1955 Arizona (4-7) at Washington (8-3) We get beat up good against Washington, who is always one of the top teams. The final score was 80-67. Thornton led is with 20 points. What would our team be like without him? Valliere and Baptiste each added double digits in the scoring column. Code:
January 8, 1955 Arizona (4-8) at Washington State (5-6) Washington State was 3-0 in the conference coming into this game, but we are able to pull off a huge upset victory, 53-50! Thornton was on fire, scoring 29 points. James grabbed 10 boards from the SG spot. This win puts us at 2-2 in league play, and a road win is huge against anyone, especially one of the two Washington teams. Code:
January 10, 1955 DePaul (4-8) at Arizona (5-8) A pathetic display of offense as we step out of conference for a game and get hammered, 62-45. Not much to talk about when we only score 45 points. Code:
January 13, 1955 Arizona State (4-10) at Arizona (5-9) Another huge letdown at home as we get beat up, 74-60. Thornton scored 22, but right now he is the only thing we have going for us. Code:
January 20, 1955 Arizona (5-10) at Oregon State (8-7) We were never even in this one. The final score was 79-55. Baptiste put up a career game in scoring with 21 points, but everyone else, including Thornton really struggled. Code:
January 22, 1955 Arizona (5-11) at Oregon (2-13) This is just not right. We get crushed again against such a poor team, 67-48. Nobody on this team can score anymore. Even Thornton is getting shut down as of late. Code:
January 27, 1955 Stanford (9-7) at Arizona (5-12) We drop yet another game, 61-60 and fall to just 2-6 in league play. Valliere led the team with 15 points, but James gave up 26 to the opposing shooting guard. Code:
January 29, 1955 California (4-13) at Arizona (5-13) This is becoming a joke. We get absolutely embarrassed on our home court, to a terrible team, 69-40. The only thing left to do is run a fast break, pressing type of game the rest of the way out. Code:
January Recruiting. We completed our recruiting class this month with 2 solid players. SG Charles Shelly is from Canby, OR. He is a 3 star recruit and ranked as the #46 shooting guard overall. Code:
PG Tony Alcantar is from Cambria, CA. He is a 3 star recruit and is ranked as the #32 Point Guard overall. Code:

Mid Season Recap
I just realized I never did a recap of recruiting or the pre season polls. Sorry. Anyhow, this year there were ten 5 star recruits. Four of them have declared for the NBA draft. So far, all but one has committed to a school: #2 SF Camilo Gonzalez, from Phelan, CA has committed to Wyoming. #3 SG Tommy Weeks, from Sabetha, KS, has committed to New Mexico State. #5 C James Arciniega, from Compton, CA, has committed to Santa Clara. #7 PG Leroy Smedley, from Ft. Lauderdale, FL, has committed to Brown. #8 SF Dwight Valle, from Greensboro, NC, has committed to IUPUI. #6 SG Logan Schaefer, from Upper Marlboro, MD has yet to commit. He favors New Mexico State right now. Mid Season Polls Code:
UMASS 2-6, 4-16 Missouri 3-3, 8-11 Penn State 3-5, 5-13 Illinois 2-4, 7-10 Iowa 0-7, 2-15 Wichita State 6-5, 14-6, Ranked #21 UTEP 4-4, 9-8

February 3, 1955
Arizona (5-14) at California (5-13) This is basically our last shot to start a run to finish out the season with some respectability. Like I said, we will now play very up tempo ball and try to create as many turnovers as possible to jump start our offense. The results were a giant failure today as we lost 89-68. We had 8 more turnovers than we generated, and got beat on the boards by ten. Thornton scored 22, but the rest of the starters were bad. We will have a lineup change next game. Code:
February 5, 1955 Arizona (5-15) at Stanford (10-9) For this game, Lon Williams takes over the starting PF spot, while Andres becomes the backup at the low post. Was that the missing ingredient the whole time? The results were an overwhelming success as we rolled, 92-50! It is probably too little too late, but who knows what can happen. Thornton scored 30 to lead the way, but Baptiste added 129 and Williams scored 10 along with 13 boards. Code:
February 10, 1955 Washington (14-6) at Arizona (6-15) We play about as good as we could against this very strong team and only lose by 1 point, 63-62. Not a total disaster. Valliere scored 18 to lead the team today. Code:
February 12, 1955 Washington State (13-8) at Arizona (6-16) We pull off a huge upset, against a first place team, 79-71. We now have some hope that we can reach the PAC 10 tournament. Baptiste came up huge with 18 points while Williams contributed with 13 and 7 boards. James and Thornton both scored in double figures as well. Code:
February 17, 1955 Arizona (7-16) at UCLA (8-14) We are now 3-1 since giving Williams the starting job. We pick up a road win here, 71-66. Everyone scored in double figured, except for Baptiste, who still finshed with 9 points. Williams also grabbed 14 boards and Thornton had 11 asssits. Code:
January 19, 1955 Arizona (8-16) at Southern California (9-15) Another road win for this team that has not given up hope. We take this one 59-51. Oh what could have been this year. Thornton led us with 24 points and James added 11. Williams cleaned up the boards, with a team high 10. Code:
February 24, 1955 Oregon State (15-9) at Arizona (9-16) We put up 100 points for the first time all season, and possibly ever since I arrived. I will probably jinx myself, but after this 100-80 victory, we are 2 wins away from finishing 500 in conference play, with 2 games to go. Thonton scored a career high 37 points to lead us to the win, but everybody chipped in except for James who fouled out of this one. Code:
February 26, 1955 Oregon (7-18) at Arizona (10-16) A 71-58 victory here puts us a single win away from a terrific comeback and finishing 500 in conference play. We will also be a tough out in the PAC 10 tournament! Valliere led us with 17 points and Baptiste added 13. Williams had 12 rebounds. Code:

March 5, 1955
Arizona (11-16) at Arizona State (14-13) Losing the game hurts. Having our biggest rival beat us on a buzzer beating shot to take the game 60-58 hurts even more. We have to shrug this off and get ready for the PAC 10 tournament, where we go in as one of the hottest teams in the league, despite this loss. Code:

PAC 10 Tournament
Code:
March 10, 1955 (4) Oregon State (16-12) vs. (5) Arizona (11-17) I believed in this team from the preseason on, even when we were at rock bottom. Finally, they prove me right and we advance into the Semi Finals with a 79-74 victory! Valliere was our leading scorer with 23 points today. Williams cleaned up the boards with 14 rebounds. Everyone else scored in double figures! Code:
March 11, 1955 (1) Washington State (20-9) vs. (5) Arizona (12-17) This is huge challenge, and to make it even tougher, Baptiste will be playing at only 80% with a groin pull. We played tough, and never gave up, but they were just a better team today, and this year. We lose, 69-57 to end a wild season. Thornton ends his career with a 23 point night. Code:
Washington State went on to win the whole thing and they are in the NCAA Tournament.
