Guys. . . I think it'd be a good idea to skip spoilers in this thread in the future. Create a new thread for them and label it so if anyone wants them they can visit that thread. One of the great things about this show, IMHO, is how we can debate amongst ourselves, get differeing ideas and put all of the opinions together to make some logical guesses.

As for what's been debated on today: I think the cheerleader is good, I don't think Syler is the prof, I think the black guy is DL (and DL's mom has some idea of what is going on there), and I'm growing more and more weary of the neighbor girl. I'd like to think she's all good, but something is nagging at me. Also, I really kind of like Clea Duvall's character for some reason (no idea why) and hope they keep her involved in the script as we move forward.

Yeah Troy, I really think the neighbor girl is evil, or at least knows more than she lets on about what's going on. No way Sylar's apartment gets cleaned up like that so soon after they were in it. The look on her face during that scene seems like a guilty one to me.

My favorite character continues to be Hiro, though Peter and the cop are gaining on him. That last scene with the cheerleader on the table was just downright creepy.

Oh and to echo others Rising Stars is great. It has a somewhat similar storyline in that it looks at what happens if a select group of people gain superpowers.

You know what I find interesting?

Just about every romantic relationship in the series so far is interracial. I'm wondering if maybe that isn't a theme that ties into the evolutionary aspect somehow.

Ok. so we have every major segment represented except the gays. I'm guessing the moment a drag queen learns he has super powers, he's gonna jump into a wonder woman costume. ; )

Just saw part of last week's episode. The symbol was drawn onto the cheerleader's geomatry book. And when the India and neighbor girl go to Sylar's house they see a book on the table called I think "encouraging evolution" with the symbol on the cover

Heroes episode to be edited in future broadcasts

Posted Oct 4th 2006 1:39PM by Joel Keller
Filed under: Drama, NBC, Industry, Heroes
Yesterday, I mentioned the fact that garbage disposal manufacturer Emerson was suing NBC over how its In-Sink-Erator product was portrayed in the pilot of Heroes. They weren't happy when Claire the cheerleader (Hayden Panettiere) sticks her hand in a disposal clearly marked with the ISE brand, and her hand emerges all cut up (never mind that it all quickly returns to normal due to her superpower of indestructability). They wanted all references to their product cut from all replays.

Well, it looks like NBC decided to avoid all the hassle of a lawsuit by cutting the scene from all future broadcasts of the show, including reruns on NBC Universal cable networks. Don Kaplan of the New York Post reports that network officials said that, "While we do not believe there is any legal issue with the episode as originally broadcast, we nonetheless have decided to edit the episode for future uses." Like I said yesterday, it doesn't pay to piss off those small-appliance manufacturers; they seem like they have more lawyers than the tobacco companies.

Yeah right like that kid wouldn't be running around the corner puking.

And why are they playing backjack when they can win a roulette all the time. And win faster

Hot damn....

What another great cliffhanger.

And it seems like the younger brother has the ability to share powers when others are around.

and I -knew- it! I called it way back early in this thread that the cheerleader's dad was an evil dude!

Question: The guy who punched Hiro out.. was he Ali Larter's husband? I thought he was, but I wasn't sure.

I'm sitting here thinking about the episode some more and I'm wondering where the DNA symbol tattoo came from on Ali Larter's body.

Also, the future Hiro looks frigging badass. It seems to me to suggest the writers are thinking ahead and hopefully it'll have a long run as a series.

The only problem I have with the show is Hiro's power. Seems to me everything in the past, present and future is pointless when you can manipulate time and space. At any given time he can go wherever and whenever he wants and alter reality to whatever he wants.

Still love the show though.

But there's consequences to his actions, a la the idiot poker move.

Also, just because he has the time/space manipulation power doesn't mean that the power is omniscient or limitless in terms of times being able to summon it.

Right, but he could have just frozen time, stripped them naked and tied them up in exotic poses. Or just stabbed them.

If you'll notice, when he's done it before, it's been for reasons of heroism (ie. saving the girl) or necessity (if they lost the roulette game, his idiot friend would've cost them all their money).

The one time he did it for purely selfish reasons, he ended up getting his tail kicked.

but since we see he can go back in time, couldn't he have gone back in time and prevented them from playing poker, getting kicked out, and getting punched?

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.

If it was in New York or some place where it could get out and hurt his campaign, then no, I don't think it happens.

An interesting point, but no I don't think he could have for the following reason:

Just because he can go back in the past does not mean he can change it. Yes, he delivers whatever message he's going to next week, but that does not directly change the past (as it would be to the Hiro character). It is only the actions of others that can change it.

I think he can only directly change the immediate present and immediate future.

Yep, because the picture used to be Erick Avari:

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0042805/

Now it's someone else.

Interestingly enough in IMDB, he's listed as Chandra Suresh for a number of episodes. Don't know why they'd drop the picture.

Um, not to burst your bubble, but that's not at all what we saw.

(Personally, I'm betting on a well-intentioned third party that gets in the way but isn't truly evil.)

Incidentally, I'd prefer that they minimize the incidence of time travel paradoxes, but the writers have been merrily plugging away with them.

It's open to interpretation, much like a lot of the show still is. We're learning more and more hard facts, but like the professor says, Answers lead to more questions.

I'm interpreting it as evil myself. Others take a different point of view, like you and that's cool. It's what helps drive discussion and debate.

That's still a possibility, sure. But if he's not with anyone who's with initials, then who exactly is he with? I'd like to hear your rationale and thoughts behind this.

I'm with Wednesday on the Chear Leader's dad. Not entirely evil. I think the outcome with the cop will shed some light on that.

Oh and on DL. I don't think he was the black guy in the bar. I think that was his ring she found buried in the desert.

I had an answer for this, but it was lost in the ether thanks to either IE or my ISP being stupid, and I'm too lazy to retype it.

Anyone else notice that when they were getting thrown out of the casino it showed a sign on the wall saying the casino was the Montecito (ala NBC's Las Vegas). I thought that was a cool little easter egg. It would have been much cooler if James Caan would have thrown them out though...

I think you may lose a bunch of the audience if you did that. Look at the problems Studio 60 is having, while being a very highly TIVO'ed show. Indicates to me that people would love to watch it, but it's on too late for them.

I think this was my favorite episode of the season thus far. I agree, the show keeps getting better and better...

Some reactions:

First, the bad.

Dr. Suresh continues to be poorly, poorly written. He has the unenviable task of being sort of the "narrator guy" who just babbles on about evolution, the map, his father's research, blah, blah, blah. This episode, however, the writers took his character for a whole new turn for the worse (though I am sure it wont last). I know what they were trying to do with him. He got his father's ashes and was blown off by the politician so he was having a "crisis of faith" if you will. The problem with that, however, is that it was 180 degree turn from everything we've seen from him up until that point. It's like in this episode he suffered from what I call "The Scully Syndrome".

The Scully Syndrome (named after Dr. Dana Scully from X-Files fame) is what happens when writers seem to "re-boot" or "wipe clean" a character's memory from one episode to the next. I loved the dynamic in X-Files (for a long while) and the skeptic vs. believer thing worked well. But as time went on and Scully was exposed to more weird things over and over and over again, the skeptic thing seemed kind of silly. She would say something like "Mulder, there are no aliens." And I would scream at the TV "What about all those aliens that ran by you in the last episode?!? And that flying saucer thing you saw!?!"

This sort of happened here. It was like the guy had no memory at all of the handyman who was snooping around his father's apartment and tried to kill him, or the guy who was in his apartment in India, or Sylar's freaky apartment, or any of that stuff. All of which would make his father's research all the more credible and likely to be real. Up until last episode he was always the believer in all of this. Instead, he gets blown off by one guy and all of a sudden he gets to play the roll of the skeptic to Peter's wide-eyed believer. Seemed a bit too contrived for me. I see where they wanted the dynamic, but it was forced.

The good:

I loved the effects they used for the painter. It was really well done, how he was seeing the vision and then pressed his paint brush down on it, capturing the image on the canvas. I also liked how he was in trance, eyes whited over (Stormesque!). It was all good.

Evil Ali Larter is hot. I assume Evil Ali is stronger, faster, etc. than Normal Ali. I think Typhoid Mary (from Daredevil) was sort of like this too, if I recall, though her "split personality" had telekinesis and pyrokinesis . Very nice.

(Side note: Ali Larter appears to be my dog's favorite character. He watches the show with me on Monday mornings and he left the room during the first half of the show (little Ali), but came back when she was on. He always seems to be "paying attention" to the screen when she's on.)

Hiro was the bomb shazam once more. The stint in the casino made perfect sense as did the allusion to Peter Parker, who also used his powers at first for personal gain (the wrestling match) before honing his vision towards being a hero.

I loved future Hiro. I was grinning ear-to-ear when I saw him. He was the perfect superhero bad-ass cliche: the black clothes, the katana across his back, the pony-tail, the little soul patch thing, his gruff way of speaking. It's exactly as I would imagine Hiro would try to establish himself, living out a geek's fantasy of what it means to be a bad ass superhero. The only thing he was missing was an eye-patch or perhaps a cigar, but I'll take his line about Peter looking "different without the scar". It was classic.

The cheerleader scene played out exactly as I expected. I like how they made the football guy a little more evil (serial rapist) than just a jerk ass. It was well done and what she did made perfect sense.

I'm very much looking forward to next week's episode.

One more small nit.

The effects of the cheerleader on the medical examiner's table, with her chest flayed open... Very bad. Very, very bad. I know it's hard to pull that sort of thing off when you have to have someone moving around with their chest flayed open, but it looked silly and just, well, wrong... Not in the "wrong" kind of way they were hoping for other.

It's just a small thing though.

I think the cheerleaders dad is a metanormal. I only say this because it looked like he materialized when the cop woke up.

I just wanted to point out that back in the day, when I was living in LA, I met the Boyfriend of a friend of mine's roommate and he was an extremely nice guy. One of the few sincere people I'd met out there keeping in mind that this was probably like 6 years ago now. When I moved he offered to help without hesitation eventhough he barely knew me. He truly was a ncie guy and the girl treated him like shite. Anyways, his name was Milo and he is the Peter guy on the show. I dont know him today and havnt spoken to him in that six years but if he hasn't changed then Im glad that he is on a hit show because no one that I knew deserved it more than him.

He could be. I mean, he sure as hell seems to certainly get around the country, LA-Texas-Vegas, etc.

Then again, he did say something along the lines of "Trying to read my mind? You can't because my friend here is like you" or something like that. It seems like he would have said "like us" if he were.

Unless he hates the fact that he is. And so he refuses to acknowledge that he is like them. It's a tired device, but probably one of the most realistic.

True. And this show has not been afraid to use "tried devices" thus far, which is fine. I don't really mind the use of some comic book cliches in the story. It seems to fit.

The more I think about it, though, the more the show could really use some better writers, some snappier dialogue. They need to get some of writers from the Whedon shows (Buffy, Angel, Firefly) in there to spice things up a bit and make the dialogue a bit sharper and more realistic.

Yeah, but hammy dialogue is a comic book staple . Not sure if they are going for some metahumor in that, though they have done so with the translations of Hiro and his friend from Japanese... instead of at the bottom of the screen, they are near their heads, like comic bubbles.

Emerson....my employer of 7.5 years. We have some trailers with In-Sink-Erator on the side and do some loads for them. What a bunch of dumbfucks.
