TCY: Kansas Jayhawks
I've been doing a TCY dynasty about the Idaho Vandals. I was able to build them into National Champions by the 11th season. That was fun, and I'll still return to that universe, but I wanted to try another dynasty that would be even more challenging.
In my Idaho dynasty, my house rule was that I couldn't recruit defensive players in the top 500. For this one, I'm going to reverse that. So I can recruit an elite defensive, but I'll be limited to top 500 offensive players. (Just as with the last dynasty, Kickers and Punters will be left out of the restrictions). The other thing that will make this challenging is the team I picked. While Idaho was certainly challenging due to limited resources, terrible starting prestige, and a remote location, there were some advantages. Playing in the Sun Belt meant most of my conference games were very easy, especially once I was able to recruit an elite offense. Kansas has the lowest starting Prestige in a major conference and we have to face off against one of the toughest conferences.

Since I now have recruiting restrictions on offense, I'm going to switch to the Double Wing and attempt a ball control offense that limits turnovers, which can help our defense dominate.
Based on the current roster rankings and ratings, it's going to be a long first season... National Ranking: 80th Big 12 Ranking: 12th Schedule Strength: 23rd QB: 108th/102nd RB: 116th/114th FB: 66th/57th TE: 92nd/79th WR: 84th/101st C: 118th/114th G: 98th/62nd T: 38th/14th P: 48th/125th K: 70th/125th DE: 115th/101st DT: 115th/101st ILB: 94th/67th OLB: 79th/53rd CB: 87th/80th S: 74th/70th Starters in bold Code:

Here are the coaches I'm stuck with for the first season...
Need a guy with much better Academic support. Ooof, that play calling is brutal. He will get replaced next season no matter what. A better play caller, but I can't live with that injury rating. Will also get replaced before next season.

Week 2: Tulsa (0-0) at Kansas (0-0)
After taking the lead on an impressive opening drive, we miss an easy FG and Tulsa equalizes immediately on a big play. The defense buckles down and we retake the lead just before the half at 14-7. We trade punts in the 3rd quarter, but finally pull away with three straight scoring drives in the 4th quarter. Tulsa isn't a very good team, but it's still nice to win the opener. Code:
QB Koepke 14-26-175-1-1, 10-22-0 FB Weathers 13-58-1, 4-23-0 RB Hill 5-63-0 WR Hoffman 4-68-0 ILB Ihler 6 tackles CB Momberg 2 tackles, 1 INT *We lose starting TE Oscar Henderson for the season. *OPOTW: RB Gus Holmes, NC State - 32-243-3 *DPOTW: DE JT Lamielleure, San Diego State - 14 Tck, 2 Ast, 5 Sck

Week 3: Toledo (0-1) at Kansas (1-0)
Another game where the defense carries us. We score TD's on our 2nd and 3rd drives to take a 14-0 lead, then it quickly becomes a blowout as the defense comes up with pick sixes on consecutive drives to take a 28-0 halftime lead. Right a fter the half, our defense forces a 3 and out, then we block the punt to get the ball on the 4 yard line. Two plays later, it's a 35-0 lead and we coast to victory. Code:
QB Koepke 7-11-97-1-0 RB May 8-53-1, 1-12-0 FB Weathers 6-28-0, 2-27-0 Rasmussen 7 tackles, 1 assist Barlow 3 tackles, 2.5 sacks CB Momberg 2 tackles, 2 assists, 1 INT, 1 TD Yates 2 tackles, 1 INT, 1 TD *Ugh, the injuries keep coming. FB Matt Weathers (my best offensive player) is out for 11 weeks with a Broken Foot. We also lose backup DE Arnold Gaines for the season due to Elbow Ligament Surgery. *OPOTW: QB Stanley Coleman, Virginia - 41-54-481-4-1 *DPOTW: DE Leonard Cole, Illinois - 4 Tck, 2 Ast, 3.5 Sck

Week 4: #43 Kansas (2-0) at Northwestern (0-2)
A much higher scoring game than the previous two as our defense just can't get it done, but our offense plays a spirited game to give us a chance to win. In fact, we build an early 17-7 lead int he 1st quarter and hold that until late in the 2nd half, when Northwestern scores TD's on 4 consecutive drives. Then they make a gutsy call by going for it on 4th and prevent our offense from getting the ball back one last time. Code:
QB Koepke 17-26-222-1-1, 3-13-0 RB May 11-81-1 RB Hill 7-72-2 WR Hoffman 6-80-0 ILB Ihler 10 Tck, 2 Ast Maloney 8 Tck, 3 Ast, 1 Sck Harris 2 Tck, 2 Sck *Backup OLB Rod Farley is suspended for the year due to a team rules violation. *OPOTW: QB Kent Gunter, Clemson - 27-39-439-8-1 *DPOTW: DE Malcolm Bork, Tennessee - 8 Tck, 7 Sck

Week 5: #28 Texas Tech (3-0) at Kansas (2-1)
As expected, we will be no match for almost any Big 12 opponent. The tone of the game was set when we actually manage to stop Tech's first drive with an INT. Then we put together our own decent drive, but our kicker misses the chip shot FG. Tech's offense kicks into high gear and we can't match them. Texas Tech puts together 454 total yards and limits us to 66. It was only a closer score because Tech missed three FG's and had two turnovers. Code:
QB Koepke 5-14-30-0-1 RB Hill 13-40-0 OLB Maloney 10 Tck, 2 Ast, 1 INT *OPOTW: QB Lincoln Wagner - 26-36-444-5-0 *DPOTW: DE Lorenzo White - 5 Tck, 5 Ast, 3.5 Sck

Pretty much what you'd expect. Nebraska manhandles us. Code:

We actually take a 7-3 lead in the 2nd quarter, but Kansas State decided to stop messing around and piled up the points against us. Code:

We continue to get beat silly by the best of the Big 12. At least we committed no turnovers and kept it below 50. Code:

Week 10: Kansas (2-5) at Iowa State (2-5)
A battle of Big 12 doormats. We play very well for the first three quarters, dominating field position and time of possession. It's a 10-0 lead entering the 4th quarter when Iowa State finally breaks through on a 12 play, 93 yard TD drive to close the gap to 10-7. We make it a two score game after they give it up on downs and it's 17-7 with 1:11 left. But we still tried to blow it. Two big pass plays and Iowa State is within 4 pts. Then they recovered the onside kick and had the ball at the 45 with 26 seconds left. But our defense finally holds strong and preserves the victory. Code:
QB Koepke 16-26-166-0-0, 2-15-0 RB May 24-87-1 RB Hill 15-70-1 TE Edward 3-41-0 ILB Ihler 9 Tck, 3 Ast T Hoag 8 Key Run Blocks *New Recruits: G Dominic Ward - #516 Overall, #51 G TE Lance Flores - #535 Overall, #19 TE DE Randall Banks - #701 Overall, #65 DE CB Rusty Stargell - #706 Overall, #51 CB T Sammy Howard - #792 Overall, #65 T OLB Mark Terry - #855 Overall, #60 OLB *Might be the last game we win this year. Our remaining opponents are #26 Colorado, #7 Texas, and #31 Missouri. *OPOTW: RB Lenny Dargy, Oklahoma - 31-214-3 *DPOTW: DE Riddick Chandler, UTEP - 7 Tck, 2 Ast, 4.5 Sck *BCS: Top 4 are now Michigan (9-0), Kansas State (8-0), Miami (7-0), and USC (7-0)

Well, we kept this one close for the most part. It was only 14-10 deficit at the half. Colorado got one more score heading into the 4th quarter to make it 21-10. That's when Koepke fell apart. He threw 4 INT's in the 4th quarter and Colorado turned it into a blowout. Code:
QB Koepke 18-37-236-0-5 WR Kaplan 5-82-0 TE Edward 4-49-0 ILB Ihler 9 Tck, 3 Ast OLB Maloney 6 Tck, 1 Ast, 2 Sck *OPOTW: RB Geoff Cayea, Illinois - 13-115-2 *DPOTW: DE Kirk Duncan, Colorado - 8 Tck, 1 Ast, 5 Sck

Well, we were able to hang in with them for a half. Jimmy May breaks off a couple of nice runs to keep us within one score of Texas at halftime. But we can't hold on and Texas piles on the points late. Code:
QB Koepke 10-21-143-0-0 RB May 14-50-2, 1-12-0 WR Kaplan 3-61-0 ILB Ihler 12 Tck, 5 Ast *New Recruit: C Alvin Clark - #846 Overall, #45 C *OPOTW: QB Emmit Cochrane - 36-49-534-5-1 *DPOTW: DE Howie Houston - 7 Tck, 1 Ast, 4.5 Sck *Miami lost and the top 4 are now Michigan (10-0), Kansas State (10-0), USC (9-0), and Tennessee (8-1)

Another terrible offensive performance dooms us as Koepke throws 4 INT's and puts our defense into terrible situations. We're still not a match for most of the teams in the Big 12. Code:

Between this and the Idaho thread, you've gotten me at least as far as looking (unsuccessfully) through my old emails for my license key. Tempted to buy this again.

Koepke had a terrible season last year, but mostly because of terrible support. He's clearly the best here. Code:
Sadly, RB is our biggest weak spot and I was unable to land a good recruit. FB is solid for now and Giese looks great for the future. Code:
My WR/TE are better than my RB's so we may have to throw more than expected out of the Double Wing. Code:
Clark and Ward look promising and will start immediately. Code:
Punter is decent, but I have crap kickers who can't hit from distance at all. Code:
Big weak spots here, so we'll be counting on true Freshmen Banks and Richardson to step it up. Code:
Hopefully Money and Terry can develop quickly, because we need them right away. Code:
Decent CB talent will help my Man to Man oriented defense. Very thin at Safety.

Week 1: Akron (0-0) at Kansas (0-0)
Not a promising start to the season. Two long drives in the 1st quarter stale din the red zone and we had to settle for FG's. Then Koepke threw picks on back to back drives at the end of the half to put us in a hole. We slowly crawl back from that hole. Down 8 late int he 4th quarter, Koepke goes 77 yards in 4 plays for the potential game tying score, but the 2 point conversion was not successful and we lose. Code:

Week 3: Kansas (0-1) at Wyoming (0-2)
We move the ball fairly well throughout this game, both passing and running, but a fumble and two missed FG's really threaten our chances. We're down 21-7 late in the 3rd when true Freshman ILB Kendall Money returns an INT for a TD. Then in the 4th quarter, we catch a break when TE Chris Hatcher recovers his own teammate's fumble and runs it in 20 yards for the tying TD. With 3 minutes left, we get the ball back and Koepke leads a 7 play, 75 yard drive for the winning TD. Code:
QB Koepke 15-27-208-1-0 FB Weathers 12-70-0, 3-32-0 RB Morton 11-50-0 TE Hatcher 5-92-0, Fumble Recovery for TD ILB Money 9 Tck, 1.5 Sck, 1 INT, 1 TD OLB Terry 6 Tck, 2 Ast *OPOTW: QB Ian Harvey, Michigan - 23-33-432-6-0 *DPOTW: ILB CJ Thomason, Central Michigan - 6 Tck, 2 Ast, 1.5 Sck, 2 INT

Week 4: Kansas (1-1) at Florida Tech (0-2)
We were on the verge of taking a 17-0 lead late in the 1st half, but Koepke has a pass picked off at the 2 yard line and it is returned 98 yards for a TD. Florida Tech actually scores midway through the 3rd to take a 14-13 lead. We manage two early 4th quarter TD drives, but FIT manages to stay in the game until a pick six with 1:05 left finally put it away. Code:
QB Koepke 21-35-247-2-1 RB Hill 10-57-0, 1-9-0 FB Weathers 7-23-0, 6-38-0 TE Hatcher 6-112-0 ILB Money 9 Tck, 1 Ast CB Baker 2 Tck, 1 INT, 1 TD S Green 1 Tck, 2 INT G Ward 7 KRB's *OPOTW: RB Billy Joe Sanford, Nebraska - 23-171-3 *DPOTW: DE Bernie Meyer, NC State - 5 Tck, 4 Sck

Week 6: Kansas (2-1) at #30 Texas Tech (2-1)
Well, we got on the board early to take a 7-0 lead, but it was all Texas Tech after that. We just don't have the personnel to match up with them right now. Code:
QB Koepke 10-23-132-0-2 FB Weathers 5-28-0, 3-20-0 WR Beyer 3-66-0 OLB Terry 9 Tck, 1 Ast, 1 Sck S Rasmussen 7 Tck, 1 Ast, 1 INT *OPOTW: QB Jimmy Lynch, Texas Tech - 25-33-357-4-1 *DPOTW: DE Skip Upshaw, Fresno State - 7 Tck, 2 Ast, 5 Sck *Still no commits.

Week 7: Kansas (2-2) at #15 Nebraska (4-1)
Hats off to the defense in this one. We actually hold Nebraska without any points in the first half. Sadly, our offense couldn't move the ball at all with only 147 total yards. Nebraska pulled away in the 2nd half and Koepke was intercepted three times in the 2nd half to thwart any comeback attempt. Code:
QB Koepke 15-31-156-0-3 (sacked 8 times) ILB Money 9 Tck, 5 Ast DE Banks 6 Tck, 1 Ast, 2 Sck *OPOTW: RB Alvin McGee, Iowa - 40-299-3 *DPOTW: DE Bruce Coxwell, Nebraska - 7 Tck, 1 Ast, 4.5 Sck *We get three declines this week, but finally have some people visiting.

Week 8: #42 Missouri (3-2) at Kansas (2-3)
Missouri slowly builds up a big 20-0 halftime lead. We manage to narrow it to two scores early in the 3rd on a Koepke TD pass. It gets as close as 10 pts after CB Chuck Momberg returns a punt for a TD. But Missouri scores 17 points in the final 2:23 to make the final score look much worse. Code:
QB Koepke 10-28-170-1-3 WR Beyer 3-50-0 ILB Money 13 Tck, 5 Ast, 0.5 Sck OLB Terry 10 Tck, 5 Ast S Green 6 Tck, 4 Ast, 1 INT *OPOTW: RB Clifton Aldrich, FSU - 30-288-3 *DPOTW: DE Shawn Bark, Oregon State - 6 Tck, 1 Ast, 4.5 Sck *New Recruits: K Gabe Szalay - #568 Overall, #14 K RB Bert Atwell - #573 Overall, #42 RB *Still not too happy about recruiting. Week 9: Baylor (1-6) at Kansas (2-4)
In what is likely to be our last winnable game, we put together a solid performance to beat fellow Big 12 doormats Baylor. We put up 430 total yards of offense, including 229 on the ground, and hold Baylor to only 138 total yards. Code:
QB Koepke 16-25-201-1-2, 4-19-1 RB Morton 24-103-0 FB Weathers 13-66-1, 7-69-0 WR Beyer 4-67-0 T James 7 KRB's ILB Money 5 Tck, 2 Sck S Rasmussen 3 Tck, 2 INT DE Adams 2 Tck, 2 Sck *OPOTW: RB Malcolm Kramer, Houston - 46-396-2 (Wow!) *DPOTW: S Carlos Bishop, Memphis - 17 Tck, 4 Ast, 1 INT *New Recruits: DE Xavier Damon - #83 Overall, #14 DE QB Joe Howland - #572 Overall, #44 QB WR Leon Banks - #625 Overall, #50 WR G Fred Christianson - #836 Overall, #77 G *Finally got our blue chip defensive players, but still more declines that will make it hard to fill out a full class. *BCS Watch: Still 9 BCS Conference teams undefeated, with USC and FSU sitting in the top two spots.

Week 10: Kansas (3-4) at Iowa State (2-6)
When I said Baylor was our last winnable game, I forgot about this one. And it should've been winnable, but we played one of our worst games of the season and let a really bad Cyclones team destroy us. Code:
QB Koepke 10-25-125-0-0 FB Weathers 4-49-0, 2-13-0 TE Hatcher 5-81-1 ILB Money 9 Tck, 3 Ast *OPOTW: RB Alvin McGee, Iowa - 43-298-4 *DPOTW: DE Freddie Beyer, Louisville - 8 Tck, 1 Ast, 4.5 Sck *New Recruits: CB Robert Rivas - #619 Overall, #44 CB

Well, we were able to put up some points in this one, but our defense couldn't keep up with Colorado. Every time we scored, they had an answer. Code:

Was hoping for a much better class than this with my improved academics, but Damon is a great find and we got some useful offensive players.

National Ranking: 93rd

Koepke might be the best right now, but we're going nowhere with him and Alcott has a better Avoid INT rating. So we'll start building for the future. Code:
Atwell's bars look better than his overall numbers, so I'll give him a shot right away. Giese will also start as a True Freshman, and he's already the best player on our team. Code:
Hoping McGee can make some big plays for us this year. Our two TE set looks pretty good. Code:
All sorts of problems here. Some decent potential, but almost no depth at all. I only have two scholarship Guards, so Christianson will have to play well before he's ready. Code:
Szalay could develop into a good Kicker. Ziegler will get lots of action again this year. He had 71 punts last season. Code:
Another case where I need my young guys to stay healthy and I have to play True Freshmen before they're ready. Code:
Money had a terrific season last year, but hasn't developed as much as I'd like. Neither has Terry. Tobeck forced into early action. Code:
CB's are pretty solid. Starting two True Freshmen at Safety because my other guys are weak at Man-to-Man Defense.

A promising debut to the season. FAU isn't a very good team, but they were ranked higher than us to start the season (65th to 96th). The Freshmen play really well, especially QB Edward Alcott, who leads a 4th quarter game tying TD drive, then completes a miracle hail mary to win the game with no time left on the clock. Code:
QB Alcott 20-33-320-2-1 RB Atwell 15-77-1, 2-18-0 FB Giese 7-26-0, 5-34-1 WR McGee 3-100-1 TE Hatcher 4-93-0 TE Flores 5-72-0 ILB Money 10 Tck, 2 Ast *The really bad news is we lose 2 starters to injury - DT Roosevelt Richardson and TE Oscar Henderson. *OPOTW: QB Leslie Siler, California - 28-43-486-4-0 *DPOTW: DE Bo Borg, Oregon - 9 Tck, 3 Sck

We just get decimated by penalties this one, committing 16 for 191 yards. This set us back on several drives and forced us to settle to FG's or punt after 3rd and longs, which our offense is well suited to convert. Two long drivesin the 4th quarter ended up being turnovers on downs and we failed to complete the comeback. Code:
QB Alcott 20-29-274-0-1 RB Atwell 16-91-0 FB Giese 4-26-0, 4-39-0 TE Flores 8-146-0 ILB Money 14 Tck, 5 Ast *OPOTW: QB Josh Mason, Stanford - 39-56-521-6-2 *DPOTW: S Jared Lawniczak, Louisiana Tech - 13 Tck, 5 Ast, 3 INT
