Flores Wins CL's Best Bat Trophy
Tuesday, May 1st, 2159: Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 31-year-old Jorge Flores put together a solid offensive month for Noblesville and was crowned April's top batter in the Continental League.

He batted .462 with 8 home runs, 21 RBIs and 22 runs scored.


RL's Premier Batter Picked
Tuesday, May 1st, 2159: Tom Moyer battered Republic League pitchers all April and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around Front Office Offseason League long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 28-year-old Moyer told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 25 games, Moyer hit .394 with 2 home runs, 14 RBIs and scored 15 runs.

LaRose Wins Best CL Pitcher
Tuesday, May 1st, 2159: Veteran Maurice LaRose put together quite a successful stretch in April for the Noblesville Millers, earning himself the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

LaRose racked up a 4-1 record in 6 starts, posting a 1.96 ERA over 41.1 innings and striking out 36.


Torres Picks up RL Monthly Pitching Honor
Tuesday, May 1st, 2159: Andrés Torres took a much-deserved turn in the spotlight earlier today as he accepted the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award for April.

The 25-year-old Rebels starter is a relative newcomer to the league, but nonetheless racked up an impressive 4-1 won-lost record in 5 starts. This month he fanned 21 batters in 33 innings and compiled a 2.18 ERA.

CL Selects Rookie Star of the Month
Tuesday, May 1st, 2159: Sixto Maldonado was toddling around on his tricycle when some of the guys he's playing against were in their prime, but the 25-year-old shortstop definitely knows how to get to first, second or beyond. Today he was chosen April's Continental League Rookie of the Month for his remarkable month of hitting.

In 23 games Maldonado batted .308 for Brooklyn, slapping 24 hits in 78 at-bats with 2 home runs, drove in 8 runs and scored 9 times.


Republic League Names Rookie of Month
Tuesday, May 1st, 2159: Youngster Octávio Chavarría emerged as the latest Republic League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Toronto deserved the honor, batting .293 with 3 home runs and 12 runs batted in. Is the month of April a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Chavarría enjoy the limelight.

May's Premier Batter Announced
Friday, June 1st, 2159: To survive in the bigs, you've got to be a scrapper like Bill Davis. It never pays to take a day off from the batting cages or to shrug off the advice of the hitting coach. It all paid off today as Halifax's shortstop pinned down the Continental League Batter of the Month trophy today.

He hit .299 in May collecting 13 home runs, 28 RBIs and 23 runs scored.

In 54 games this year Davis has posted a .249 average and put up these numbers: 17 home runs, 40 RBIs and 29 runs scored.


Moreno Wins RL Batter of the Month
Friday, June 1st, 2159: Today Chico's Víctor Moreno was named Republic League Batter of the Month for May. He slammed opposing pitching hard all month long, bashing out 33 hits in 99 at-bats.

With a .333 batting average, 6 home runs, 20 RBIs and 19 runs scored, he was a solid choice.

This year Moreno is batting .326 with 13 home runs and 39 RBIs.

Gonzáles Selected CL's Best Pitcher
Friday, June 1st, 2159: Miguel Gonzáles has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in May and stole away with the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

The Winter Wolves bullpen ace collected 11 saves and 11 strikeouts in 15.2 innings, holding the opposition to a .135 average and posting a 0.00 ERA and a 1-0 record.

For the year Gonzáles has earned 17 saves, made 26 relief appearances, fanned 21 hitters in 26.1 innings and posted an ERA of 0.68 and a 1-1 record.


May's Top Starter Named in RL
Friday, June 1st, 2159: Francisco Alsina's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 4-0 in May, the 30-year-old Colorado hurler has been named Republic League Pitcher of the Month.

He fanned 27 in 35.2 innings, logged an ERA of 1.26 and allowed opponents to hit .179 against him.

In 10 starts this season Alsina has notched a 5-3 record and a 2.40 ERA.

Shafer Voted May's #1 Newcomer
Friday, June 1st, 2159: A veritable toddler to the Continental League, Aaron Shafer just sewed up the Rookie of the Month trophy for May.

Over the past month the 22-year-old third baseman for Halifax hit .255 with 26 hits, 5 home runs and 15 RBI. He also logged 12 walks and compiled a .339 on-base percentage.

So far this year Shafer is hitting .242 with 6 home runs.


Colorado Designated Hitter May's #1 Rookie
Friday, June 1st, 2159: Tomás Rodríguez earned May's Rookie of the Month honors in the Republic League for last month's performance. The boyish Colorado designated hitter might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Rodríguez hit .407 with 3 home runs, 20 RBIs and 10 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

During the current season Rodríguez is batting at a .354 clip with 4 home runs and 32 RBIs. He has played in 43 games and scored 17 times.

Continental League Selects June's Best Batter
Sunday, July 1st, 2159: When guys like Noblesville's Carlos Manuel win Batter of the Month awards, it just makes you feel good. In a productive June, the longtime Continental League veteran toyed with opposing pitchers all month long, collecting 34 hits in 96 at-bats.

The veteran center fielder hit for a .354 batting average and collected 8 home runs, 19 RBIs and 22 runs scored.

This season Manuel has delivered 91 hits in 284 at-bats for a .320 average with 27 home runs. He is getting on base at a .416 clip and his totals also include 66 RBIs and 60 runs scored. This year Manuel has played in 79 games.


Vázquez Wins RL's Best Bat Award
Sunday, July 1st, 2159: Jorge Vázquez had quite a month with the bat in June and the Hartford first baseman was crowned Republic League Batter of the Month for his outstanding efforts.

To win the honor, he batted .358 with 29 hits, 11 home runs, 31 RBIs and 22 runs scored. He also drew 10 walks to post a .415 on-base percentage.

This year Vázquez has hit at a .300 pace and produced 61 RBIs, 22 home runs and scored 48 runs.

Assassins Starter Named June's Premier Pitcher
Sunday, July 1st, 2159: It was a very good month for Colin Kidwell in June. The 35-year-old veteran starter for the Apex Assassins outpitched everybody -- young and old -- to claim the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award earlier today.

Kidwell ran up a 4-2 record in his 6 starts during the month. In 45 innings he fanned 22 and recorded a 2.00 ERA.

This season Kidwell has compiled a 8-6 record with a 3.62 ERA.


RL Selects Oprel June's Best Pitcher
Sunday, July 1st, 2159: Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Reginald Oprel still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in June. The 32-year-old starter for Colorado was named Republic League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 4 wins and no losses with 37 strikeouts in his 6 starts, putting up a fine 2.51 ERA in 43 innings of work.

On his stats sheet this season Oprel shows a 7-4 record, 16 starts, 111 innings, 80 strikeouts and a 3.49 ERA.

García Wins Newcomer of the Month
Sunday, July 1st, 2159: Eduardo García's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Baltimore left fielder has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.

In June he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award.

During the month he hit .320 with 6 doubles, no triples and 2 home runs. García also scored 9 times and drove in 7 runs.

Thus far this year García has hit .272 with 6 home runs and 22 RBIs.


Colorado Rookie Reels in Reward in June
Sunday, July 1st, 2159: Tomás Rodríguez is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Republic League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In June the Colorado hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .415 average with 34 hits, 2 home runs and 16 RBIs.

A look at his current stats shows Rodríguez with a .376 average, 6 home runs, 48 RBIs and 26 runs scored. He has played in 65 games.

Tuesday, July 10th, 2159: The Continental League All-Stars versus the Republic League All-Stars. It happens every year halfway through the season. It's a baseball spectacle for the fans and the players alike. It's the 2159 Front Office Offseason League All-Star Game. Baltimore's Ramos CL #1 Batter in July
Wednesday, August 1st, 2159: The Batter of the Month honoree for July in the Continental League is Baltimore Gothams first baseman Jesús Ramos.

He showed no mercy as he finished the month with a .377 batting average, 11 home runs, 24 RBIs, and 15 runs scored.

This season Ramos is batting .307 with 21 home runs. He has scored 42 runs and driven in 54.


Eddy RL Outstanding Batter of the Month
Wednesday, August 1st, 2159: Doyle Eddy of the Rancheros hit .347 in July with 13 home runs, 31 RBIs and 21 runs scored to capture a majority of votes for the Republic League Batter of the Month trophy.

The 30-year-old is in the last year of his contract and will undoubtedly use these numbers to try and bring in a huge pay raise.

Eddy is hitting .304 in 2159 with 83 RBIs and 31 home runs.

Nadeau CL's #1 Pitcher in July
Wednesday, August 1st, 2159: Olivier Nadeau had a super July and has been rewarded with the Continental League Pitcher of the Month Award. The Noblesville relief specialist was very effective, constantly coming in and getting his club out of trouble or protecting a one-run or two-run lead.

the Noblesville bullpen ace starred with 8 saves in 10 relief appearances, logging 13.1 innings, 13 strikeouts, 1 walk and a 0.00 ERA. Nadeau finished the month with 1 win and no losses -- and was named the league's top pitcher.

This season Nadeau has crafted a 1-4 won-lost mark, pitched in 47 relief appearances and rung up 30 saves. He has a 2.53 ERA and has allowed 44 hits over his 57 innings of work, struck out 59 batters and walked 2.


RL's Top Starter is Oprel
Wednesday, August 1st, 2159: In July Colorado starter Reginald Oprel confused hitters all month long. Last month's Republic League Pitcher of the Month took home the trophy as he collected a 4-1 record in 5 starts.

The 32-year-old Oprel added 38 strikeouts in 36 innings and 10 walks to his season record and compiled a 2.50 ERA. Other clubs hit .227 against him.

To date this season, Oprel has a record of 11 wins and 5 losses and a 3.24 ERA. He has appeared in 21 games and struck out 118 in 147 innings.

Shafer Tabbed CL's Top Rookie
Wednesday, August 1st, 2159: Halifax's Aaron Shafer was voted July's Continental League Rookie of the Month by baseball officials after putting together a fine month-long performance.

The 22-year-old third baseman really attacked the baseball, putting up 25 hits, 1 home run, 10 RBIs and a .338 average while playing in 21 games.

Shafer on the season is batting .263 with 8 home runs. His totals include 37 RBIs and 41 runs scored. He has played in 99 games.


Rookie Rapper Reaps RL Honors
Wednesday, August 1st, 2159: In July, Los Angeles second baseman Les Noonan snared the Republic League Rookie of the Month award.

In 21 games he hit .276, collecting 21 hits, 6 home runs, 19 RBIs and 14 runs scored. He also chalked up 14 walks and a .402 OBP.

Noonan is batting .293 this season in 83 games with 13 home runs, 41 RBIs and 62 runs scored. He has 80 hits in 273 at-bats.

CL Choice for Batter of the Month is Manuel
Saturday, September 1st, 2159: Though his face is weathered and his hands are calloused, Carlos Manuel can still get it done in Front Office Offseason League. In fact, the 35-year-old center fielder for Noblesville was named the Continental League Batter of the Month today after putting up an impressive performance at the plate.

In August he batted .337 with 7 home runs, 19 RBIs and 16 runs scored.

This year Manuel has 41 home runs and a .323 batting average.


RL Announces Best Batter Award
Saturday, September 1st, 2159: Hammersmith left fielder Craig Ray took home the Republic League Batter of the Month Trophy for August.

He put up some solid numbers, including a .359 batting average and .421 on-base percentage with 42 hits, 6 home runs, 22 RBIs and 24 runs scored.

Ray is presently hitting at a .323 pace with 30 home runs, 105 RBIs and has scored 85 times.

Millers Hamada August's #1 Pitcher
Saturday, September 1st, 2159: As Tomiji Hamada hoisted up the Continental League Pitcher of the Month trophy for August, rumors have already begun to swirl about whether he will leave Noblesville once his contract is up at the end of the season.

Hamada put pressure on the Millers to keep him around by posting a 5-0 record and an ERA of 2.83 over 41.1 innings last month. He also rolled up 46 strikeouts, increasing his value both to Noblesville and to every other team in the league.

To date this year, Hamada shows a 16-5 record, 26 starts, 168 innings, 158 strikeouts and a 3.54 ERA.


Reliever Guerrero Top RL Pitcher in August
Saturday, September 1st, 2159: Sometimes relievers are treated like second class citizens, most of the time the award goes to the starters, but not this month. A reliever, Jorge Guerrero, has been named the Pitcher of the Month in the Republic League.

In August, the Hammersmith relief specialist stood out with 7 saves in 11 relief appearances, a 3-0 won-lost mark and 1.38 ERA. He worked 13 innings, allowed 10 hits, struck out 11 and walked 0.

Guerrero has made 52 games so far this year with 33 saves. In 56.1 innings he has dished out 42 strikeouts and walked 12 with a 6-3 mark and a 1.76 ERA.

Top Continental League Newcomer Named
Saturday, September 1st, 2159: In August, Juan Franco piled up some solid numbers and walked off with the Rookie of the Month award in the Continental League.

Last month the 25-year-old Apex center fielder played in 25 games and hit .307 with 6 doubles, no triples and 3 home runs. Franco also scored 15 times and drove in 8 runs.

So far in 2159 Franco is batting .248 with 9 home runs, 32 RBIs and 60 runs scored. He has 91 hits in 367 at-bats and a .343 OBP.


Rodríguez Heads the Rookie Class
Saturday, September 1st, 2159: Tomás Rodríguez wreaked havoc on Republic League pitching last month and led the charge for the Rookie of the Month Award.

In August he batted .485 for the Rancheros, lashing 33 hits and 3 home runs. The Colorado designated hitter also drove in 11 runs and scored 16 times to round out a most impressive month.

To date, Rodríguez has collected 139 hits for a .393 average. He has posted 11 home runs, scored 52 runs and driven in 67 runs.

CL Best Hitter Trophy Goes to Flores
Monday, October 1st, 2159: September's Continental League Batter of the Month trophy was claimed by left fielder Jorge Flores of the Noblesville Millers.

Last month he compiled a .415 batting average with 9 home runs, 23 RBIs, 18 runs scored and a .462 on-base percentage.

This season Flores has banged out 181 hits in 531 at-bats for a .341 average with 33 home runs. He is getting on base at a .410 pace and his totals also include 87 RBIs and 91 runs scored.


Moreno Claims RL Batter of the Month Award
Monday, October 1st, 2159: It's official. BNN writers have voted Víctor Moreno of the Chico Rebels the Republic League Batter of the Month award for September.

During the month he recorded a .313 average with 7 home runs, 21 RBIs and 16 runs scored.

Thus far this season Moreno is hitting .316 with 39 home runs, 119 RBIs and 103 runs scored. He has 188 hits in 594 at-bats and has played in 152 games.

Gibbs Stands Out, Choice for Best Pitcher
Monday, October 1st, 2159: Christian Gibbs nailed down September's Continental League Pitcher of the Month award today, adding pressure on Baltimore to get a deal done before the 31-year-old becomes a free agent.

Gibbs seems unfazed by the talk. "We get a deal done or we don't," he told reporters, "I'm not worrying about next year. Worrying about next year isn't what wins awards, you know?"

He fashioned a 4-0 record, reeled off 16 strikeouts, worked 32 innings and held batters to a .235 average for the month as he posted a 2.53 ERA.

Thus far this season, Gibbs has worked 192 innings with 124 strikeouts en route to a 9-12 record and a 4.59 ERA.


Nicholls Top RL Starter in September
Monday, October 1st, 2159: Emerson Nicholls took home the Republic League Pitcher of the Month honors in September. After all these years playing ball, the 36-year-old veteran still enjoys the game as though he'd just broken camp for the first time a month ago. He's a bit older now with a few more aches and pains, but the old man has reason to celebrate, having gone 4-1 for Chico last month and claiming the Pitcher of the Month award.

He tacked up a 2.89 ERA in his 5 starts, tossing 37.1 innings and striking out 18.

To date Nicholls is 12-13 in 29 starts with a 4.36 ERA and has 86 strikeouts in 206.1 innings.

Monday, October 1st, 2159: September's choice for Continental League Rookie of the Month is Juan Franco of Apex.

The talented center fielder started 16 games, hit .356 with a .465 OBP. For the month, he totaled 21 hits, 3 home runs, 7 RBIs and 18 runs scored.

This season Franco has hit 12 home runs and posted a .263 batting average.


September Sensation RL's Best Rookie
Monday, October 1st, 2159: Octávio Chavarría certainly made his presence felt in the Republic League in September. The gifted first baseman for Toronto ripped opposing pitchers for a .337 batting average and was the top votegetter for the Rookie of the Month trophy.

He won it by going 33-98 in 26 games with 4 home runs, 20 RBIs and 16 runs scored.

Currently Chavarría is batting .297 with 166 hits and 17 home runs. He has knocked in 78 runs and scored 77 times.

Unfortunately four of them went unsigned (Carlton, Manuel, Hathaway and Castillo) heading into the 2nd signing period so I offered the last 3 deals and they accepted. Obviously Manuel and Hathaway are HOF players and I was glad to have them back!

I took a long hard look at Manuel, who has peppered hyde's Batter of the Month posts for years now. In the end, I went with the younger Ray, who is a fantastic player, and I don't regret that. But I would have enjoyed having Manuel on the team.

I also went for Oprel, but Tasan was willing to keep him employed until he was 38.
