Disagree. It looked like he used the outside of his boot, which would indicate to me that he intended it as a shot.

that doesn´t mean the keeper thought it was possible and I really can´t imagine any keeper focussing on a strikers foot-angle in that situation

If the keeper thought a shot was possible from that angle, then his positioning was absolutely horrible, because he was way off the line. If he were even close to the line he would have been able to at least get a hand on that ball.

Don't think he meant it, although I did at first. On the replay though, when Maicon looked up he looked across into the box, not at the goal.

Seriously, I've seen more through balls go long, crosses go straight out of play and shots threaten the corner flag in the last week than 5 years watching division four football every single weekend.

Actually this is the FIRST and most important thing the keeper looks at when moving to defend the ball. If you aren't watching the angling of the attackers legs/feet body then you shouldn't be playing Keeper.

As others have said, his positioning was hoorible. he was a good 3 feet farther out from the post than he should have been. he fucked up, they scored. end of story.

Horse shit. this is exactly how the last World cup looked. The ball is NOT the problem. The only people with anything to bitch about the ball is the goal keepers. Because the ball doesn't spin as much on a hard shot and tends to knuckle as it flies.

The rest is just normal footy, if they were making all the plays you mention as regularly as you seem to think they should the scores would be 10-9 every game.

@ RendeR : The ball is sped up yet again though and there is no denying that the ball bounces a great deal higher than usual. (although i suspect this also has to do with other factors like the ground itself not absorbing the energy of the bounce very well as there weren´t such problems in the german league as far as i can recall)

The problem is the same as with every World Cup. In the early rounds the lesser teams play to not get destroyed instead of to win. They get 10 men behind the ball and defend with their lives. It makes for very boring and tedious football.

After the prelims things start to pick up when the stakes are higher and it's win or go home. Every World Cup is like this.
