Clemens(6-0) was very good in the win. He didn't allow much, just 4 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings. Boston had a total of 8 hits for the game. Ken Schrom(1-3) absorbed the loss. He pitched 4 and 2/3 innings giving up 3 hits and 3 walks.Boston continued their winning ways, with their streak now at 7 games and counting. Toronto drew first blood jumping out to an early lead in the first inning when they tallied 5 runs on 3 hits. That early scoring held up. Toronto totaled 12 on the afternoon. Key(4-2), allowing 3 runs for the game, picked up the victory. The loss was charged to Floyd Bannister(1-6). He allowed 3 hits and 3 walks in 2/3 of an inning. Noles(2-3) pitched a solid game. He allowed 8 hits and 4 walks in 8 innings and was touched for 2 homeruns improving his ERA from 5.22 to 4.97. Both teams ended up with 8 on the afternoon. Greg Harris recorded the save, his 3rd. Mark Gubicza(2-3) was tagged with the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 7 hits and 3 walks in 4 and 2/3 innings. Noles was pleased with his performance. Milwaukee threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short. Tom Waddell was credited with his 5th save. Pete Vuckovich(0-4) was the losing pitcher. Baltimore promptly took the lead in their half of the first plating an isolated run. Baltimore had only 3 hits for the afternoon. Boddicker was helped out by Nate Snell who recorded his 6th save. John Grubb stepped into the batter's box and he singled. Larry Herndon then slapped a one-base hit to load the bases. Mike Witt then was wild with a pitch which plated a run. Both teams were tied at 4 runs apiece after nine innings. Atlanta won the hard fought contest in the 11th inning. After an out was recorded, Gerald Perry opened up the rally as he smacked a single. Harper stepped into the batter's box and he lashed a single. Rafael Ramirez then stroked a single which scored a run. Rick Cerone stepped in and he drew a walk to load the bases. The game's only run was scored in the bottom of the 2nd inning. That early scoring held up. New York threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short. Show(7-3) went 7 and 1/3 innings allowing no runs for the win. Show got help from Goose Gossage who was credited with his 12th save. The loss was charged to Ed Lynch(2-1). He was the victim of a defensive lapse and did not allow an earned run in the game. 'We won because we did the little things right.' Dick Williams said after the game. Chicago promptly took the lead in their half of the first as they scored 3 runs on 4 base hits. That scoring would be all that was needed. Chicago rapped out 9 hits for the afternoon. Sanderson(2-3) allowed 1 run on the game. Nolan Ryan(6-4) absorbed the loss. 'I thought it was my best performance in a long time,' said Sanderson. 'I had good command early in the game. St. Louis tallied 3 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning. Jack Clark led off and started the attack as he laced a base-knock. Two outs later Darrell Porter came up and he drew a walk. Ozzie Smith then drew a walk to load the bases. Kurt Kepshire was up next and he slapped a base-hit, and an error was also committed, bringing in two baserunners. Jay Tibbs then threw a high and inside pitch that got by the catcher; it was ruled a passed ball scoring the final run of the inning. St. Louis banged out 9 on the afternoon. The victory went to Kepshire(3-2) who went 8 innings, allowing 2 runs. The loss was charged to Tibbs(1-8). He surrendered 5 hits and 2 walks in 4 innings.

Kansas City rapped out 16 hits for the afternoon. The victory went to Saberhagen(7-4) who went the distance allowing 1 run. Pete Vuckovich(0-5) ended up with the loss. He was knocked around, surrendering 8 runs in 4 and 1/3 innings. New York had the game winning rally in the bottom of the 9th inning scoring 2 runs on 2 hits. After an out was recorded, Andre Robertson got things rolling when he slapped a one-base hit. Mattingly was next and he cracked a two-run shot (his 5th of the season) making New York the victor and beginning a joyous home town celebration. The critical plate appearance was by Bell who excited the crowd when he lifted one out of the park for a two run home run (his 14th of the season). Tom Henke was perfect in relief and got the save, his 13th. The victory went to Jim Clancy(4-2) who went 6 and 2/3 innings, allowing 1 run. The loss was charged to Bert Blyleven(7-3). It was a tough loss for him as he did not allow an earned run in his 3 innings of work. In the bottom of the 2nd inning Chicago scored 2 runs with the help of 3 hits. That was all the runs Sutcliffe(5-3) needed. Chicago had 9 hits for the afternoon. Boston came through with the game-winning runs in the top of the 9th inning scoring 2 runs on 3 hits. After an out was recorded, Marc Sullivan opened up the rally as he drew a walk. Easler followed and he popped a two-run clout over the fence (his 8th of the season). Boston rapped out 8 hits for the afternoon. Bob Stanley(2-0) went 2 and 2/3 innings allowing no runs for the win. California wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning when they tallied 5 runs on 4 hits. That was all the runs Kirk McCaskill(3-5) needed. After the 4th inning, neither team was able to score. Stu Cliburn earned his 1st save. Bud Black(6-5) was the losing pitcher. His ERA increased from 2.83 to 3.18 as he allowed 5 runs without retiring a batter. Los Angeles took the lead for good in the 5th inning plating an isolated run. Los Angeles had 13 hits for the afternoon. Valenzuela(8-1) was the winner allowing 2 runs for the game. Rick Mahler(3-5) was hit with the loss. He was knocked around by Los Angeles, allowing 9 hits and 4 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings. Offensively, Pittsburgh was a juggernaut. They scored in 6 separate innings. Reuschel(5-4) lasted until the end allowing 2 runs for the win. Dick Ruthven(0-4) was charged with the loss. He struggled with his control issuing 6 walks in 3 and 2/3 innings. The critical plate appearance was by Max Venable who electrified RIVERFRONT STADIUM when he doubled bringing in two baserunners. San Diego made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across. Jay Tibbs(2-8) went 7 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory. Tibbs was helped out by John Franco who recorded his 3rd save. The loss was charged to Tim Stoddard(1-2) in relief. He was knocked around, surrendering 4 runs in 2 innings. Sammy Stewart(7-1) won the game with a masterful relief performance. No one got on base in his perfect 2 and 2/3 innings. Baltimore had 6 hits overall, while Boston had 3. Roger Clemens(7-1) ended up with the loss. He gave up 2 runs and 5 hits in 6 and 1/3 innings. With this win, Baltimore has a 32-20 record. They have been 5-5 lately. With an impressive recent record of 9-1, Boston hopes this will only be an isolated loss - followed by another nice run. The key at-bat was by Brook Jacoby who thrilled the crowd when he smashed a two-run homer (his 7th of the season). For the game Cleveland out-hit Seattle 13 to 7. The Milwaukee fans didn't appreciate the big day Winfield had. He stroked a base-hit in the 1st inning, bombed a two-run dinger in the 3rd inning and hit a bases-empty home run (his 10th of the season) in the 5th inning. New York simply wore out the Milwaukee pitching staff, scoring in 6 different innings. Rich Bordi(6-3) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 2 and 2/3 innings. Brian Fisher recorded the save, his 1st. Moose Haas(1-8) was given the loss. He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 12 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings. Bannister got help from Bob James who was credited with his 9th save. Frank Viola(2-6) was the losing pitcher. He pitched 8 innings and surrendered 9 hits and 4 walks. Codiroli(10-3) had a strong outing. He surrendered only 7 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA to 3.87. Oakland and Texas each finished the afternoon with 7 hits. Dickie Noles(2-5) was tagged with the loss. He was not very effective, surrendering 6 runs in 5 and 1/3 innings. The Oakland ballclub's record now stands at a division leading 28-25. With the loss Texas now has a record of 19-34, worst in the division. Toronto had the winning rally in the bottom of the 9th inning with 3 runs using 2 hits. Jesse Barfield was the sparkplug when he delivered a solo blast (his 14th of the season). After another out, Jeff Burroughs got his chance to keep things going, but he went down on strikes. Tony Fernandez then drew a walk. Buck Martinez was up next and he blasted a two-run home run (his 1st of the season) making Toronto victorious to the delight of the the home town crowd. Detroit was not lacking for run support as they scored in 5 separate innings, yet victory eluded them as they seemed to forget that pitching is also needed to win ballgames. The victory was credited to Dennis Lamp(7-1) who went 1/3 of an inning, allowing no runs. Willie Hernandez(2-3) was charged with the loss in relief. Lamp and Bell were really whooping it up in the clubhouse after the great come from behind victory. As Bobby Cox noted, 'A win like this one can do wonders for a team's attitude.' Everyone shares in the joy - the fans, the players - even you guys - it's better than winning by a dozen runs!'
