FOOL-X 1995 Regular Season

We'll kick it off in about 20 minutes or so (as soon as ootp9 finishes generating reports and I can close it down).

Just a warning, I have conference calls at 8:30, 9, 10:30 and 11am this morning so going to be pretty busy. So this regular season might be a little slower progressing then normal seasons.

I'm afraid it's going to be a race for the 1st overall pick, not first place.

Ok good luck all. Starting the season up. At 8:30 until 9, it might get a little slow for a little bit though.

Hopefully that is not a race that I am in this season. But, as usual, my rotation is bound to come up short...

Defenders González Sizzles with Cycle
Tuesday, April 18th, 1995: Cumberland's Cisco González went 4-for-6 in today's game and hit for the cycle, collecting all four types of hits and 3 RBIs. But his effort could not overcome the Spring Lions, who won the game 20-9.

"I didn't really think about it at the time, although after the third hit, it snuck into my mind," González told reporters. "The crowd certainly let me know in that last at-bat, that I was going for the cycle... and I was able to make solid contact and get it. In the end the only thing that matters is that we lost," González added.

C. González hit a two-run home run off L. Colón in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, hit an RBI double in the 5th, struck out in the 6th, tripled in the 8th and struck out in the 9th.

In 1995 González has hit at a .231 clip with 15 hits, 3 home runs, 13 RBIs and has scored 9 times.

Republic League #1 Hurler is Freeman
Monday, May 1st, 1995: Oscar Freeman has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in April and stole away with the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award.

The Naps bullpen ace collected 2 saves and 6 strikeouts in 11.2 innings, holding the opposition to a .289 average and posting a 2.31 ERA and a 3-0 record.

Agámez Earns CL's Best Pitcher Honor
Monday, May 1st, 1995: Veteran Bernardo Agámez put together quite a successful stretch in April for the Boston Resettlers, earning himself the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

Agámez racked up a 5-0 record in 7 starts, posting a 0.41 ERA over 44 innings and striking out 40.

RL's Best Batter Announced
Monday, May 1st, 1995: Werner Tupper is in the final year of his contract with Virginia Beach and today added a timely piece of hardware to his trophy case. Playing in 26 games in April the 35-year-old right fielder ripped Republic League pitchers for a .364 batting average, nabbing him the Batter of the Month award.

He also rang up 5 home runs, 26 RBIs and 23 runs scored.

If Tupper keeps up this pace, he'll cost someone a lot of money.

Carmona Garners CL Batter of the Month Award
Monday, May 1st, 1995: Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 28-year-old Juan Carmona put together a solid offensive month for Chicago and was crowned April's top batter in the Continental League.

He batted .390 with 7 home runs, 19 RBIs and 18 runs scored.

RL Selects Rookie Star of the Month
Monday, May 1st, 1995: Youngster Eduardo Cerda emerged as the latest Republic League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Portland deserved the honor, batting .286 with 5 home runs and 17 RBI. Is the month of April a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Cerda enjoy the limelight.

Continental League Names Rookie of Month
Monday, May 1st, 1995: Salvador Moreno's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Stafford center fielder has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.

In April he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award.

During the month he hit .327 with 11 doubles, no triples and 1 home run. Moreno also scored 16 times and drove in 14 runs.

How is that Pitcher of the month worthy? I guess 'cause the 3-0 record?

Campbell Guns Downs 17 Legends
Saturday, May 6th, 1995: Lorne Campbell of the Portland Axemen was something to behold at The Beaver Den. He was on fire and fanned 17 Legends en route to a 5-3 victory. Campbell shackled New York on 3 hits and gave up 2 walks in an outstanding performance.

"That's as good as I've ever seen him throw," his manager said. "I've never seen so many bad swings in my life. These guys didn't have a chance."

Campbell had very little to say to after the game. "We won and that's the bottom line. I had a good game. And we beat New York."

The New York manager wasn't too happy with the game. "He pitched a very good game. You have to tip your cap to him."

To date this season Campbell has compiled a 4-1 record with a 3.22 ERA in 7 starts.

Axemen Campbell Fans 15 Wolverines
Saturday, May 20th, 1995: If you can't hit 'em, you can't beat 'em. That was the story today at the Portland-Ann Arbor clash at The Beaver Den. Axemen twirler Lorne Campbell gunned down 15 Wolverines via strikeouts and beat them 3-1. In a superb performance he allowed 5 hits and issued 2 walks for the victory.

This year Campbell has fashioned a 6-1 mark, 2.86 ERA and pitched 63 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .193 against him and he has logged 78 strikeouts.

Campbell Is RL's Best Pitcher in May
Thursday, June 1st, 1995: Lorne Campbell's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 5-0 in May, the 29-year-old Portland hurler has been named Republic League Pitcher of the Month.

He fanned 57 in 38.2 innings, logged an ERA of 2.33 and allowed opponents to hit .148 against him.

On the year Campbell has compiled a 8-1 mark with a 2.74 ERA.

CL Picks May's Top Pitcher
Thursday, June 1st, 1995: Despite the number of years he's been in the league, José López still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in May. The 32-year-old starter for Washington was named Continental League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 3 wins and 2 losses with 32 strikeouts in his 6 starts, putting up a fine 1.64 ERA in 38.1 innings of work.

Danton Wins RL's Best Bat Trophy
Thursday, June 1st, 1995: Fans, friends and family were cheering today when Ed Danton received May's Republic League Batter of the Month Award.

Danton stung the ball all month, posting a .363 batting average with 8 home runs, 24 RBIs and 17 runs scored.

On the year Danton is hitting .320 with 64 hits, 13 home runs, 49 RBIs, .403 OBP and has scored 34 runs.

Pinentel Wins CL Batter of the Month
Thursday, June 1st, 1995: Manuel Pinentel battered Continental League pitchers all May and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around FOOL-X long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 27-year-old Pinentel told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I may not take the field and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 28 games, Pinentel hit .359 with 6 home runs, 29 RBIs and scored 21 runs.

May's Top Newcomer Picked by RL
Thursday, June 1st, 1995: José Padilla was toddling around on his tricycle when some of the guys he's playing against were in their prime, but the 25-year-old left fielder definitely knows how to get to first, second or beyond. Today he was chosen May's Republic League Rookie of the Month for his remarkable month of hitting.

In 29 games Padilla batted .296 for Maricopa, slapping 32 hits in 108 at-bats with 4 home runs, drove in 21 runs and scored 20 times.

This year Padilla is batting .265 with 6 home runs. He has scored 34 runs and driven in 31.

Rookie Wiz Gets May Award in CL
Thursday, June 1st, 1995: Alonso Domínguez is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Continental League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In May the Indianapolis hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .331 average with 39 hits, 1 home run and 12 RBIs.

This season in 53 games Domínguez is batting .284 with 3 home runs, 24 RBIs and has scored 36 times.

Burkett Gets Number 2000
Thursday, June 29th, 1995: The day belonged to Tony Burkett of the Havana Banana Sluggers as he became the latest player to reach the 2000-hit plateau. He did it in Havana's 7-3 win over Balzac.

"It's a moment I'll never forget," said Burkett after the game, "2000 hits is a lot. It puts you in a very select group. I never expected to be around long enough to reach a milestone like this."

He finished the day with 1 hits in 4 at-bats.

In his career Burkett is hitting .279 with a total of 269 home runs.

Tupper Reaches 2000 Milestone
Friday, June 30th, 1995: The Virginia Beach 5-2 loss to New York wasn't all bad. Something good came out it, at least for Werner Tupper. As a consolation prize he got the 2000th hit of his career. The veteran Surf right fielder went 2-for-4 in the game and added his name to the coveted 2000-hit club. He was given a five-minute ovation by the crowd, which included his wife and family and quite a few former Surf teammates.

"I could have scripted it better," Tupper commented to the press after the game, "a win would have made it a lot more enjoyable. But what the hey... hit #2000 ain't so bad."

In his career Tupper has compiled a .296 batting average and collected 2001 hits, 266 home runs and 1164 RBIs.

Flores Voted Best RL Pitcher in July
Tuesday, August 1st, 1995: The July Pitcher of the Month has been chosen and the Republic League award went to Virginia Beach hurler, Gonzalo Flores.

July's Best CL Hurler is Concepción
Tuesday, August 1st, 1995: The Continental League Pitcher of the Month honor has been given to Carlos Concepción of Mexico City for a superlative month.

"I actually never wanted to be a pitcher," Concepción told reporters when asked who he credits for his pitching ability. "I was an outfielder until high school and on the third day of tryouts my coach came up and said, 'Son you couldn't hit a lick even if we put it on a tee for ya.' Well, that ticked me off, so I decided if I couldn't hit I wanted to make sure no one else could either and so here I am."

It all turned out for the best as the Mexico City starter notched a 3-1 record with a 1.34 ERA last month. He made 6 starts and struck out 33 in 33.2 innings.

This year Concepción has a 11-3 record and a 1.92 ERA.

Tuesday, August 15th, 1995: For Kichibei Yamasaki, it was a red-letter day. The Stafford Terriers catcher slapped his 3000th career hit. That his team defeated the Indianapolis Clowns, 8-5, made it even sweeter.

His manager paid tribute to Yamasaki after the game: "I've followed Kichibei since he came into the league," he said. "Fine ballplayer. Fine work ethic. I'm not surprised by what he's achieved."

The 42-year-old Yamasaki finished the day with 2 hits in 5 at-bats.

In 2931 career games Yamasaki has batted .273 with 3000 hits with 711 doubles, 58 triples and 364 home runs. He has also collected 1805 RBIs and scored 1737 runs.

Wallace Hits for the Cycle
Saturday, August 26th, 1995: Getting 4 hits in a game is no easy feat, but hitting for the cycle is much more rare. Joel Wallace was on fire today, going 4 for 4 and hitting for the cycle against Maricopa at Rattlers Ballpark. His batting escapade sparked the Cleveland Naps to a 17-5 victory over the Rattlers. For the day the Naps second baseman scored 2 runs and drove in 6.

The feat is rare in baseball as it requires a game of no fewer than four hits and the unusual combination of a home run, which requires a batter to hit for some power, and a triple, which requires a batter to have both speed on the basepaths and a well-placed drive deep into the outfield.

He told reporters after the game, "It just happened. Must have been fate or something... you can't plan this. I was more concerned with winning the game."

J. Wallace was hit by a pitch in the 2nd, flied out in the 3rd, doubled in the 5th, hit an RBI triple in the 7th, hit a GRAND SLAM off E. Callaia in the 7th and singled in the 9th.

This season Wallace is batting .288 with 134 hits, 16 home runs, 89 RBIs, .344 OBP and has scored 65 runs.

Adams Socks 300th HR
Wednesday, August 30th, 1995: It was a great day for Chris Adams, but not a good one for his Havana Banana Sluggers. The 32-year-old catcher reached a personal milestone with his 300th career homer, but it wasn't enough to beat the Chicago Cardinals, who came away with a 8-7 victory. Adams finished the day with 2 hits, 1 run batted in and 1 run scored.

"Well, I've conceded the fact that you can't will yourself to hit a home run," he said. "I tried hard for the last few days. It was getting to be embarrassing with the crowd standing up every time I came to the plate."

Adams is hitting .245 lifetime with 1393 hits, 229 doubles, 17 triples, 300 home runs and 1029 RBIs to date. He has scored 880 runs, walked 837 times and has a .343 OBP.
