St Cloud Thompson Gets the Cycle
Tuesday, April 15th, 2053: "To hit for the cycle" is one of the rarest of feats in a baseball game. This occurs when a player hits a single, double, triple and home run in the same game, getting every type of hit possible. Henry Thompson grabbed a piece of baseball history today when he hit for the cycle. Thompson went 4 for 4 with 4 RBI and 2 runs scored against Chicago, leading the St Cloud Raindrops to a 6-5 win at Fog Bowl.

"I felt comfortable at the plate in a way I haven't felt all season," Thompson said after the game. "It was like they were throwing beach balls at me. The ball seemed that big to me. And it just floated in."

Henry Thompson singled in the 1st, hit a two-run home run off Keith Kenney in the 3rd, hit an RBI double in the 5th and hit an RBI triple in the 7th.

This season Thompson is swinging the bat at a .379 rate with 11 hits in 29 at-bats. To date he has hit 1 home run, scored 3 runs and driven in 7.

6 Hits for Terriers Lee
Sunday, April 20th, 2053: It wasn't just another day at the ballpark for Leonard Lee. It was a very special day, one that many players never experience. But he did. Lee went on a tear and cracked hit after hit off Havana pitching.

When the dust settled on the diamond at Constitution Plaza, he had a career 6-6 day and something he will long remember. And the Stafford Terriers had a 17-7 victory over the Banana Sluggers.

"Yeah, it'll be something nice to tell the grandkids, but it won't get me a hit tomorrow," he joked in the postgame interview.

Leonard Lee hit an RBI single in the 1st, hit a two-run home run off Albert Alfonso in the 2nd, doubled in the 3rd, doubled in the 5th, singled in the 7th and singled in the 8th.

Thus far this year Lee has hit .400 with 6 home runs and 12 RBIs.

Republic League Names Rookie of Month
Thursday, May 1st, 2053: Youngster Cordell Gilmore emerged as the latest Republic League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Maricopa deserved the honor, batting .312 with 1 home run and 16 RBI. Is the month of April a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Gilmore enjoy the limelight.

CL Selects Rookie Star of the Month
Thursday, May 1st, 2053: Randy Clayton earned April's Rookie of the Month honors in the Continental League for last month's performance. The boyish Havana third baseman might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Clayton hit .329 with 3 home runs, 10 RBIs and 13 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

Sagong Wallops #300
Saturday, May 17th, 2053: Washington's outstanding catcher Woo-suk Sagong joined the 300 home run club today at Banana Sluggers Ballpark with a booming blast in the Freedom win over the Banana Sluggers. They topped Havana 15-4.

On his milestone day Sagong had 2 hits in 5 at-bats with 5 RBI and 2 runs scored.

Tongue-in-cheek he told the press, "Don't tell me when I get close to the next milestone. Just tell me after I reach it. It will be easier to hit that way."

In his career Sagong is batting .311 with 1748 hits, 300 home runs, 967 runs scored and 1122 RBIs.

Ríos Gets 300th Save, Shuts Down Axemen 3-2
Saturday, May 31st, 2053: Miguel Angel Ríos has joined elite company. The Cleveland Naps reliever earned his 300th save in a 3-2 victory over the Portland Axemen at The Beaver Den. The newest member of the 300 club told reporters after the game, "I get the ball and I try to win the game. When I get a save, my team wins and really that's all that matters. I'm happy to reach the milestone but it's just that. The more important part is that I've helped my club win." While picking up the save, Ríos allowed 1 hit and no runs in 1 innings of work.

Despite the dejection of their team having lost the game, even a number of Axemen fans were seen honoring Ríos as they joined in the standing ovation as he recorded the final out on his historic save. "That was pretty special," he said. "Something I won't soon forget."

Ríos has earned 300 saves since he came up. He has logged 1365.1 innings with 1607 strikeouts and an ERA of 3.24. In his career he has a 88-78 won-lost record.

Jandhyala Goes Cycling
Saturday, May 31st, 2053: Murali Jandhyala of the Waikiki Beach Boys touched all the bases today at Legends Stadium in the 14-2 victory over New York, hitting for the cycle. He teed off on Legends pitching for a single, double, triple and a home run. The feat is rare in baseball as it requires a game of no fewer than four hits and the unusual combination of a home run, which requires a batter to hit for some power -- and a triple, which requires a batter to have both speed on the basepaths -- and a favorable fall of the ball.

"The hardest part was the triple," confessed Jandhyala, "A lot has to go right for you to get a triple. It is real easy to get greedy trying to stretch a double and get thrown out. It's really hard to get a three-bagger." He finished his special day with 4 hits in 5 at-bats, 4 RBI, 4 runs scored and a place in the record book.

Murali Jandhyala singled in the 2nd, flied out in the 3rd, hit an RBI triple in the 6th, hit a two-run home run off Doug Barraclough in the 7th and hit an RBI double in the 9th.

Jandhyala on the season is hitting .247 with 1 home run. His stats include 11 RBIs and 13 runs scored.

May's Best Rookie Trophy Awarded
Sunday, June 1st, 2053: Clay Parker is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Republic League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In May the Maricopa hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .358 average with 34 hits, 8 home runs and 19 RBIs.

This year Parker is hitting .308, produced 27 RBIs and 11 home runs, scored 23 times and gotten on base at a .368 rate.

Top Rookie of the Month Named by CL
Sunday, June 1st, 2053: Randy Clayton was toddling around on his tricycle when some of the guys he's playing against were in their prime, but the 23-year-old third baseman definitely knows how to get to first, second or beyond. Today he was chosen May's Continental League Rookie of the Month for his remarkable month of hitting.

In 28 games Clayton batted .326 for Havana, slapping 31 hits in 95 at-bats with 6 home runs, drove in 21 runs and scored 14 times.

This year Clayton is hitting .328 with 9 home runs and 31 RBIs in 49 games played. He also boasts an OBP of .397 with 21 walks and 27 runs scored.

Suzuki Swats #300
Monday, June 30th, 2053: Waikiki defeated Ann Arbor today 9-4 and took some of the joy out of Shimpei Suzuki's 300th career home run.

"I just wanted to get a good swing on the ball all day," Suzuki said. "And I did."

Despite the loss, it was a good game for the 35-year-old Wolverines right fielder. He had 2 hits, scored 1 run and had 1 RBI.

The Beach Boys manager said, "You could see he was aggressive up there. The worst thing we did was throw him a strike. It probably would have been better if threw the ball outside of the strike zone every time he came to the plate because he seemed like he was in a hurry to get it over with."

Lifetime Suzuki is hitting .248 with 213 doubles, 26 triples, 300 home runs, 1008 RBIs and 805 runs scored. He has appeared in 1675 games to date and delivered 1448 hits.

RL's Top Pitcher in June Is Hernández
Tuesday, July 1st, 2053: Alonso Hernández nailed down June's Republic League Pitcher of the Month award today, adding pressure on Ann Arbor to get a deal done before the 36-year-old becomes a free agent.

Hernández seems unfazed by the talk. "We get a deal done or we don't," he told reporters, "I'm not worrying about next year. Worrying about next year isn't what wins awards, you know?"

He fashioned a 5-0 record, reeled off 31 strikeouts, worked 37.1 innings and held batters to a .194 average for the month as he posted a 1.69 ERA.

Up to now Hernández has compiled an ERA of 4.25 with a 9-3 mark over 19 starts. He has 69 strikeouts in 91 innings and has held opponents to a .227 batting average.

Mullets Hurler Named CL's #1 Starter
Tuesday, July 1st, 2053: The Continental League scribes have picked June's Pitcher of the Month and have given the trophy to Santiago Castillo of Oshawa. He was devastating on the mound last month with a standout 4-0 mark.

The Mullets star hurler made 5 starts with a 0.50 ERA and surrendered 14 hits in 35.2 innings. He struck out 24 and walked 13.

This year Castillo has compiled a 6-5 mark with a 4.50 ERA in 15 starts.

And.. the second place team in the RL has a better record than the first place team in the CL.

Kind of tells you how dominating Ann arbor is thus far this season.

Why do you all keep letting the new people do this well in their first seasons? Is it your way of welcoming them to the league collectively? Get their hopes up and then crush them later on?

Halfway thru the season and I am in dead last (unfortunately)--but I am only six games under .500 and less than 10 games out of first. Tight race in the CL this year so far.

Palmeiro Pounds HR #500
Saturday, July 5th, 2053: St Louis's 7-0 victory over Washington was highlighted by Héctor Palmeiro's 500th career home run. His teammates congratulated him at home plate after he circled the bases.

"I didn't see all of them out there," Palmeiro said with a chuckle, "until I rounded third base." He added sheepishly: "It was only a home run. It's not like I won us a World Series!"

In 4 at-bats the Hops first baseman collected 2 hits in his historic game, scored 1 run, and had 2 runs batted in.

Career-to-date Palmeiro is hitting .235 with a total of 500 home runs.

I miss Caro. It's more fun going through a season when you have a domiant player who can win an award at any point in the season.

Ducklow Gets #400
Friday, July 11th, 2053: The crowd roared -- they knew they were seeing history -- and Dave Ducklow was delighted, too: The 33-year-old Mullets center fielder was making history with his 400th career homer. The crowd buzzed and roared again when Ducklow stuck his head out of the dugout for a curtain call.

"Never, as a kid, did I ever think I'd hit even one," he told BNN after hitting No. 400 in a 2-1 victory over St Louis. Ducklow went 3-4 in the game, had 2 runs batted in, and scored 1 run.

Ducklow boasts a career batting average of .305 with 2237 hits, 400 homers and 1326 RBIs.

Number 500 for Lynn
Monday, July 21st, 2053: At Ballpark of Cleveland Jim Lynn smashed his 500th career home run in a game against Maricopa today. The 36-year-old left fielder had a hand in the Cleveland Naps 8-7 victory with 1 home run and 3 RBI. For the day he went 1 hit-4 at-bats.

At the press conference after the game, Lynn downplayed his achievement.

"Obviously, I've hit 500 home runs so I belong in that 500 club. But when you talk about the other guys that have done it, I'm not as good as they were. Those guys were the greatest of all time. I've just been able to scrape together some good years and stayed healthy and gotten there."

His career numbers show Lynn is currently carrying a .257 lifetime batting average with 500 home runs and 1476 RBIs.

And Lynn is the 34th player with 500 HR in league history!

Just imagine how good he could have been if he actually could hit the ball more often than once every 4 times!

July's Premier Pitcher Announced By RL
Friday, August 1st, 2053: Paul Morgan has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in July and stole away with the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award.

The Beach Boys bullpen ace collected 2 saves and 21 strikeouts in 20.1 innings, holding the opposition to a .256 average and posting a 2.66 ERA and a 4-0 record.

Over the season, Morgan has made 56 relief appearances with 2 saves. He has K'd 75 batters in 65.1 innings, yielded 27 walks and has a 4.27 ERA. Morgan's record this year is 4-4.

Best Starter Chosen by Continental League
Friday, August 1st, 2053: A 4-0 record with a 1.00 ERA is a pretty good month for most any pitcher. The Continental League thought it was worthy of an award and named Emílio Martínez, starter for the St Louis Hops, July's Pitcher of the Month.

He also held the opposition to a .227 average while posting 31 strikeouts in 36 innings.

In 21 starts this year Martínez has crafted a 13-3 record and a 2.25 ERA.

José García Winner in July
Friday, August 1st, 2053: José García, the Spring left fielder, had a productive month in July. He put up some solid numbers with a .411 batting average (39 for 95), 5 home runs, 16 RBIs and 23 runs scored.

That standout offense earned him the Republic League Batter of the Month Trophy.

Currently García has 16 home runs and a .297 batting average.

CL's Best Batter Picked
Friday, August 1st, 2053: Drake Farley is in the final year of his contract with Havana and today added a timely piece of hardware to his trophy case. Playing in 25 games in July the 28-year-old left fielder ripped Continental League pitchers for a .352 batting average, nabbing him the Batter of the Month award.

He also rang up 2 home runs, 9 RBIs and 21 runs scored.

If Farley keeps up this pace, he'll cost someone a lot of money.

Currently Farley is batting .336 with 7 home runs and 42 RBIs.
