SB and squares game problem.
So, issue here at my work involving the SB and the squares game. I didn't play so I don't have a dog in the fight.
Super Bowl Squares - 10x10 Each Quarter last number score (ie 2nd quarter was 21-3, so 1-3 pays out $400 for Falcons and that person and a 3-1 payout of $80 for the Patriots and that person.) $400 payout each quarter $80 for reverse of each quarter $40 for dead squares (2 dead squares, 2-2 and 5-5 I think, random and not that important) Problem arises this year because the sheet reads (and always has) and quoted "PAYOUTS ARE $400.00 PER QUARTER...", Not the final score. OT placed the score and grid for 4-8 Patriots. Who gets the money? 4th quarter payout of 8-8 (and the reverse) for $480, or the OT and final score square of 4-8 and 8-4 reversed. |

I'd say OT.

Because of the "Per Quarter" language, I'd say it's at the end of the 4th quarter.
Also, what are "dead squares?" |

Seems pretty clear that there has to be a payout for the 4th quarter.

Always specify final score. It prevents arguments.

This. Every time I play squares, I look for the final payout verbage, and ask for clarification. If it says "per quarter" or "4th quarter", I'd have to say it pays at the end of the 4th quarter, and not on the Final Score. |

I don't know why dead squares exist. You would think they could just make the reverse be a $100 payout instead of $80. I think they did/do it to add a couple more smaller payouts to give a little added chance to get some $$. We do a similar one for March Madness based on FINAL SCORE (winner-loser) last numbers with bigger payouts per round. I've been w/ this company over 4 years and they do Colts games and SB squares games all the time...and have never come across an OT game. |

Technically it's 4th Qtr/Final AKA if the game goes to OT, OT pays out not the 4th quarter.

The one I was in this year was "1st" "2nd" "3rd" and "4th". So I contend in my instance, it's very clear. I ended up winning 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, but lost OT. But got the money.
In your instance, it says for each quarter, which to me would mean thats 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 1 more quarter for whatever OT there may be. |

Yeah, if they'd gone to 3OT would you also pay out at the end of each OT? I'd have thought there's an unspoken assumption that for a game that is calculated to pay out at the end of each quarter that we are talking about 4 regulation quarters, unless it's specifically said that the last payout is for the final score instead of the end of the fourth quarter.
Sucks, and might not be the intent, but the wording is pretty clear IMO. |

This seems to make it pretty clear. We can argue over whether that's how the game should be played (it's not), but if the rule is right there on the sheet, I'm not sure what anyone is arguing over.

They are arguing over $400 for one person and $80 for another as opposed to one person getting $480. $$$$$$$$ |

I think the best scenario (again no dog in the fight for me) is to divide it up as if it were 5 quarters.
So, each quarter payout was $400 ($1600), divided by 5 in this case would be $320 payout per quarter. Other payout was $80 ($320), divided by 5 in this case would be $64. Reason in my mind to redistribute all quarters and not just the 4th and OT is to be fair all around. I do not foresee anything good coming out of this, if the person who had 8-8 loses $480 or the other 2 people lose $400 and $80. Just redistribute the points and going forward have it read '1st, 2nd, 3rd quarter and FINAL SCORE.' |

Per quarter is pretty clear to me. OT is the 5th quarter. If no one picked squares for the 5th quarter, then no one gets money for the 5th quarter.

I spoke to a judge on the Supreme Court of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
She said you give 1/2 to the winner of Q4 and half to the winner of OT. The explicit language of "end of quarter" does not completely supercede the expectation that the last quarter really means "end of game" All off the record, gambling is illegal |

Getting really sick of these activist judges trying to thwart the will of the people.
