Monday September 2nd: Stars (77-57) Vs Cardinals (75-61)
Sele pitched into the 7th and thanks to help from Abbott and Moeller we ended the inning with a 3-1 lead. We took that lead to the ninth and Pall got the save as we win the 1st game of the series. Burnitz homered & Goodwin was 3-4. Final Score: Stars 3 Cardinals 1 Tuesday September 3rd: Stars (78-57) Vs Cardinals (75-62) Nomo went 6.1 and Embree and Abbott got us out of the innings with our 5-4 lead over rookie Ken Cloude preserved. Abbott would allow a Mark Whiten game tieing homer in the 8th but Helton would smack a 3 run pinch homer in the bottom of the inning off of T.J. Matthews to give us back the lead. We would add another run and Ericks would pitch a scoreless ninth as we picked up the win. Brian Jordan was 4-5. Helton had the 3 run homer and Eric Young was 2-3 with 2 RBI. Attendance has been 10,000 all home stand long. Final Score: Stars 9 Cardinals 5 We're still a game behind those pesky Giants and 2 games ahead of the Dodgers. Atlanta has gotten hot and is only 5.5 games out of first. Allan Trammell has a high ankle sprain and is gonna miss about two weeks. The hits just keep coming. Dodgers SP Kevin Gross has mild shoulder inflamation and will miss the next 10 days. Wednesday September 4th: Stars (79-57) Vs Cardinals (75-63) Hamilton would last just four innings and give up 8 runs. Great Cesars Ghost. We trailed after four innings 8-1. We would get it to 8-6 but Lee Smith would close us out in the 9th. Damn. Goodwin was 4-4, Helton & Greene each homered and had 3 RBI. Ray Lankford went 2-5 with a homer and 5 RBI and Dunston & Jeffries had 2 hits each for the Cardinals. Final Score: Cardinals 8 Stars 6 Thursday September 5th: Stars (79-58) Vs Cardinals (76-63) Fernandez went 6.2 and after seven innings we trailed Joe Magrane 5-4. We would tie it in the 8th off of Rob Murphy and we went to the 10th when Pall, Moeller and Bushing would give up 3 runs and Cormier would set us down in the bottom of the inning to secure the win. Grrr. Womack and Goodwin each had 3 hits for us. Luis Alicea was 3-6 with an RBI and Pat Borders had a 3 run homer for the Cardinals. Our pitchers are giving up early runs and forcing us to play catch up way too much here lately. Final Score: Cardinals 8 Stars 5 By the grace of god we still stand just a game behind the Giants who have gong 4-6 in their last 10 games. The Dodgers are a game behind us and the Braves are surging as they stand just 3.5 games back. This is getting crazy. Huge news out of San Fransisco as Barry Bonds underwent arthroscopic knee surgery and will miss the next 3 weeks. |

Friday September 6th: Stars (79-59) At Senators (45-94)
Cooke was done after five and we trailed 3-0 entering the sixth when we finally woke our bats up and chased Rick Helling with a 5 spot. Abbott and Ericks would then give up five runs in the seventh, the big blow coming on a Mark Carreon grand slam. Down 8-5 in the ninth we would score 4 times off of a wild Matt Mantei, the big hit was a 2 run single from Brian Jordan. Bill Hurst would put runners on 1st and 3rd with 2 outs but Embree came in and struck out Tom Foley to end the game and give us a huge come from behind win. Nice. Brian Jordan had 3 RBI, Womack was 2-4 with 2 RBI. Mark Carreon had a homer and 4 RBI for them and Charlie Hayes went 3-5. Final Score: Stars 9 Senators 8 Saturday September 6th: Stars (80-59) At Senators (45-95) Welp, it happened again. Reynolds gave up six runs in the first 2 innings but would settle down to go 6 innings and leave trailing Pedro Astacio 6-1. Astacio and Joey Eischen would finish us out as we drop the game in listless fashion. Carl Everett homered for them and Tony Tarasco and Ramon Carabello each went 3-5. Burnitz and Jorand each had 2 hits for us. Final Score: Senators 6 Stars 2 I've decided I wont be using Sele to spot start. I don't know if the extra days rest is effing up our pitchers rhythms or if they're just sucking based on all natural ability but Sele will be much more useful out of the pen so that's where we'll use him the rest of the way barring an emergency. Sunday September 6th: Stars (80-60) At Senators (46-95) Nomo threw 8.1 innings of 3 hit, shut out ball and though Embree would allow an inherited runner to score he would close out the solid win over William Van Landingham. Burnitz homered and Spiers & Goodwin added RBI's as we get out of town with 2 of 3 from the Senators. Final Score: Stars 5 Senators 1 Welp, on the day Kevin King returns to our bullpen, Willie Greene and his strained forearm will be out 6 days. Dave Hansen will take his spot in the lineup. With Kings addition to the 40 man roster, Mo Sanford will go back down to AAA. We are now in a 3 way tie for first place with the Dodger & Giants while the Braves sit 2.5 games back. We head out for a 3 game series against Eastern Division leaders and likely winners Montreal. Montreal has a 10 game lead on St. Louis, that race is done. Cleveland is clinging to hope at 5.5 games behind the Orioles while the White Sox hold a 13 game lead on California and Seattle. |

Monday September 9th: Stars (81-60) At Expos (87-56)
Hamilton left with no one out in the sixth and the bases loaded already down 6-2 to Carl Pavano. Abbott and Moeller would get out of the inning giving up just one more run and it was 7-2 after six. We cut it to 7-5 but that's as close as we'd get as they close out game one of the series. Helton had 2 RBI for us. Brett Barbarie had a big 3 run double in the 4th inning to pace their lead. Wil Cordero added 3 hits and a RBI. Final Score: Expos 7 Stars 5 Everybody but the Giants lost today, putting them a game up on us and the Dodgers and the Braves 3.5 games back. Tuesday September 10th: Stars (81-61) At Expos (88-56) Alex Fernandez was pulled with 2 outs in the first inning after having given up 5 runs and 6 hits, his sixth straight horrible start. Dettmer came in to replace him. They would keep pouring it on and we would look like little leaguers against the mighty arm of the god like Tavo Alvarez, whoever the fudge that is. Our offense has looked like poop the last two days against two young pitchers. Larry Walker was 4-5 with a homer and 3 RBI. Greg Colbrunn added a homer and 3 RBI of his own. Final Score: Expos 12 Stars 1 The Giants continue to win, pushing us and the Dodgers both 2 games back. We need some frigging wins here and quick. Wednesday September 11th: Stars (81-62) At Expos (89-56) Cooke went 5.2 and we ended the sixth inning down 4-2 to Reid Cornelius. We would cut it to 4-3 but our pen just couldn't keep their bats at bay, they added four more runs and shut us down en route to the sweep. Gursh. Womack had 3 hits for us. Larry Walker was 3-4 with a homer and 3 RBI and Darrin Fletcher added 3 RBI of his own for the Expos. Final Score: Expos 8 Stars 3 This series will likely haunt us. They just pounded us into the ground all week long. We're now 3 games behind the Giants and a game behind the Dodgers. The Braves are 4.5 games back. Steve Cooke has a hamstring issue that will likely force him to miss his next start. I don't know what we'll do yet though, it's still five days away. We head home for a 4 game series against the Mets with time running out on our dreams of a division title. We have 18 games left and we likely need to win 13 or 14 to win the division. |

Thursday September 12th: Stars (81-63) Vs Mets (65-80)
Paced by Todd Heltons 2 hits, one a homer, and 2 runs and Shane Reynolds seven innings of shutout ball we took a 7-0 lead to the ninth inning where despite our bullpens best efforts to give the game away we hung on to win. Goodwin and Decker each added 2 hits. Greg Vaughn homered for the Mets. Attendance was a crisp 6,000. Huzzzah. Final Score: Stars 7 Mets 5 Friday September 13th: Stars (82-63) Vs Mets (65-81) Hideo Nomo almost made it out of the 4th inning......He and Sele would both have innings where they allowed 5 runs as the Mets just clobbered us while Dwight Gooden showed us what quality pitching looks like. Simply put, they woke us up, rolled us over, and made us bite the pillow. Edgardo Alfonze was 5-6 with 3 RBI, Jay Buhner had a 3 run homer, Greg Vaughn added 3 RBI and the legendary Jeff Treadway and Jeff Barry each had 3 hits. Steve Decker homered and had 2 RBI for us. Final Score: Mets 12 Stars 3 Saturday September 14th: Stars (82-64) Vs Mets (66-81) Joey Hamilton, who had been dreadful his last two outings, went 7 strong innings and left with a 5-3 lead against Barry Jones. It was 6-3 in the ninth when Pall gave up a 2 run shot to Hal Morris but he held on to get the save and us the win. Helton went 3-4 and Spiers was 2-4 with 2 RBI. Final Score: Stars 6 Mets 5 Willie Greene is back tomorrow, that's huge for us. Sunday September 15th: Stars (83-64) Vs Mets (66-82) Alex Fernandez, who hasn't had a quality start since pitching a complete game shut out on August 2nd, gave us 7 strong innings and left with a 4-3 lead against Robert Person thanks in large part to a 3 run homer from Jeromy Burnitz in the 2nd inning. It was 5-3 going to the ninth and Pall would pitch through trouble once again, allowing a run but getting the save to give us 3 of 4 in the series. Quality. Burnitz had a 3 run homer and Goodwin was 2-4 with an RBI. Jeff Barry was 3-4 with a homer and Hal Morris was 2-4 with 2 RBI for the Mets. Final Score: Stars 5 Mets 4 The Giants have lost two in a row and they need lead the Dodgers by just 1 game and us by just 2 games. The Braves are 4 games back. This race insists on going to the wire. Carlos Hernandez is ready to play and we insert him right in as the everyday Catcher tomorrow. Steve Cooke is unable to go tomorrow so Aaron Sele will make a spot start and Cooke will pitch 3 days from now giving everyone an extra day of rest. We head out to Pittsburgh for a 4 game series against the Pirates who are on a 6 game losing streak and just not playing very good baseball. The Dodgers Ramon Martinez has a stress fracture in his ankle and is done for the year. A blow for them to be sure. The Indians are clinging to hope, trailing the Orioles by 4 games in the AL East. |

Monday September 16th: Stars (84-64) At Pirates (66-82)
Sele pitched into the sixth and left with a 5-4 lead against rookie Adrian Hernandez. We took a 6-5 lead into the ninth when we exploded for seven runs off of Mark Dewey & Stan Belinda. Tony Womack was 4-5 with 2 steals, Willie Greene homered and drove in 2 runs and Helton added 2 RBI while Carlos Hernandez went 3-5. Final Score: Stars 13 Pirates 5 Tuesday September 17th: Stars (85-64) At Pirates (66-83) Shane Reynolds went six innings and left trailing 4-1 against Jon Lieber. We would close it to 4-3 but they would pull away off of our pen and hand us the loss. Six Pirates had multi hit games, Jay Bell had 2 RBI and Al Martin homered. Final Score: Pirates 7 Stars 3 John Hope & Alan Trammell both come off of the DL tomorrow and will be a big boost to our team, especially Hope. Steve Cooke will start tomorrow and everyone gets an extra day of rest as we prepare for the stretch run here. The Giants losing streak is at 4 games and they now hold just a half game lead on the Dodgers and a 1 game lead on us. The Braves meanwhile have won 4 in a row and sit just 2 games back. This may be the greatest race of the divisional era. The Indians have lost two in a row while the Orioles have won three in a row to pretty much lock up the division. Wednesday September 18th: Stars (85-65) At Pirates (67-83) Steve Cooke went 3.2 innings and gave up 8 runs in a miserable showing. The added a few more runs and Esteban Loaiza looked like Sandy Koufax as we played a listless, lifeless ball game for the second day in a row. Very disapointing. Leo Gomez was 2-5 with 3 RBI, Orlando Merced and Cory Snyder each had 2 RBI. Burnitz homered for us. Final Score: Pirates 10 Stars 1 Tony Eusebio is healthy and will be inserted right back into the lineup as our starting catcher tomorrow. The Dodgers have moved into first place, a half game up on the spiraling Giants. We are tied for the 3rd with the Braves at 1.5 games back. Thursday September 19th: Stars (85-66) At Pirates (68-83) Nomo threw 7 brilliant innings of shut out ball and left the game with a 4-0 lead. Our pen would struggle but we would add a couple more runs and pull out the win to get a series split. Womack was 3-5 and Spiers was 2-2. Carlos Garcia was 3-5 with 2 RBI for the Pirates. Final Score: Stars 6 Pirates 3 The Dodgers lead the Giants by 1 game, and us and the Braves by 1.5 games. This is anyones ball game. The Astros have won four in a row and sit on the outskirts, 5.5 games back. We head home for our final home stand of the season with 3 games Vs the Cubs and 4 games Vs the Phillies, tough games all. |

Friday: September 20th: Stars (86-66) Vs Cubs (80-73)
Welp. Hamilton was innefective as he went 5.2 and gave up 10 hits and 4 runs. The mighty Daniel Garibay pitched 7 innings and only let up 2 runs for the Cubs. Our bullpen and defense were fairly atrocious and they ended up clobbering us as we continue to play what I can only call lifeless baseball. The Cubs had 19 hits against us, 5 of which came off the bat of Mark Grace. Sammy Sosa was 3-5 with a homer and 4 EBI and Rick Wilkins was 3-4 with a homer and 3 RBI. Final Score: Cubs 11 Stars 4 The good news is that everyone else in the race lost. The bad news is we're running out of time. Saturday September 21st: Stars (86-67) Vs Cubs (81-73) Alex Fernandez gave up 4 runs in six innings of work and left down 4-2 to the mighty Dave Swartzbaugh. It stayed 4-2 till the ninth and Randy Myers set us down to save it and close out another Cubs win. FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK~!!! Final Score: Cubs 4 Stars 2 We were the only team in the race to lose today, dropping us 2.5 games back. It literally feels like we've just run out of steam. Sunday September 22nd: Stars (86-68) Vs Cubs (82-73) We jumped on Steve Trachsel for 3 first innings runs but Shane Reynolds was up to the task of blowing a nice lead. He would go four innings and leave with an 8-7 lead. Today however we kept hitting and our bullpen was as good as they've been in weeks. We piled on 20 hits en route to a decisive win. Eric Young was 4-5 with 4 runs and 2 steals. Womack was 3-6 with 3 runs and 2 RBI. Helton, Burnitz and Goodwin added 2 RBI each. Rick Wilkins and Sammy Sosa homered for the Cubs. Final Score: Stars 14 Cubs 7 Everyone else in the race won again today so it's status quo as we slowly run out of time. It's not so much needing to make up the 2.5 games as having to overcome three other teams. We welcome the Phillies for 4 games before heading out to play the Mets in the seasons final series. The Indians are still 4 games behind the Orioles in the AL East. |

Monday September 23rd: Stars (87-68) Vs Phillies (80-75)
Steve Cooke went seven strong innings and it was tied 2-2 going to the bottom of the seventh when we scored 3 runs off Phillies starter Andy Ashby & reliever Norm Charlton. Embree pitched a 1-2-3 eighth and Pall pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to give us the win in the series opener. Eric Young was 2-4 with 2 RBI and Womack, Helton and Jordan added RBI's of their own. Final Score: Stars 5 Phillies 2 The Dodgers and Braves both won today while the Giants were off, so we're still 2.5 games back. The Dodgers are in 1st and the Braves and Giants are 1.5 games out. Tuesday September 24th: Stars (88-68) Vs Phillies (80-76) What a huge win. Kevin Foster had us no hit into the sixth when we finally broke through for our first hit and run of the game to pull within 2-1. Nomo went 8 brilliant innings giving up just one earned run on a Tony Longmire homer in the 2nd. In the bottom of the eighth we would tag Foster and Andy Carter for 8 runs with the big hits being 2 run singles from Jordan and Spiers. We would close it out in the ninth and win a big game that we had been trailing all day. Final Score: Stars 9 Phillies 4 Everyone else in the race lost today so that leaves the Dodgers in 1st place with us, the Braves and the Giants all 1.5 games back. The Indians are 3 games behind the Orioles. Wednesday September 25th: Stars (89-68) Vs Phillies (80-77) Perhaps the single most heartbreaking game of the year. I'll provide the 16 inning game log instead of a long drawn out recap but suffice to say we just ran out of pitchers before they did. Damn.

Final Score: Phillies 9 Stars 6 (16 Innings) The Giants were the only team in the race to win today, moving them to within a half game of the Dodgers. We're running out of days. Sean Lawrence will miss the seasons final four games with a pulled hamstring. The Indians are within 2 games of the Orioles. Thursday September 26th: Stars (89-69) Vs Phillies (81-77) Oh my. Fernandez gave up 3 first inning runs and while he would settle down and go 5.2 without giving up any more runs, Doug Drabek had us off balance all game long. It was 3-0 going to the bottom of the 8th. Helton walked, Greene singled to put runners on 1st and 3rd. Burnitz grounded out to bring in a run and then Goodwin doubled to bring in another and cut it to 3-2. Mitch Williams came on and struck Bill Spiers out and then Steve Decker came to the plate. He lined an opposite field shot that just cleared the right field fence and put us up 4-3. We would another run and then Embree came on in the 9th and set them down in order as we escape with a win when it looked like our season was pretty much over. Oh my. Final Score: Stars 5 Phillies 3 The Giants won and the Braves lost so the Dodgers and Giants enter the final weekend of the season tied for 1st place. We're 1 game behind and the Braves are 2 games behind. Reynolds, Cooke and Nomo will get the starts in this final series, not exactly the 3 guys you'd want when you NEED to win but it's who we got so yeah. The Indians are still 2 games behind the Orioles. |

Friday September 27th: Stars (90-69) At Mets (73-86)
Well, Reynolds didn't pitch awful.....ok he did I guess, I dunno. He gave up 3 home runs in 4 innings, the big one being a 3 run shot for Greg Vaughn. He left after 4 down 5-2 to Robert Person. Willie Greene came up with the bases loaded and 2 out in the seventh but lined out to center field off of Jason Isringhausen. It was still 5-2 in the ninth when John Franco put runners on 1st and 3rd with 2 out. Carlos Hernandez pinch hit for Willie Greene and lined out to right field to end the game. Bleh. Final Score: Mets 5 Stars 2 The Braves lost but the Giants and Dodgers won which eliminated the Braves and leaves us 2 games behind and needing a miracle. Man oh man. The Indians still trail the Orioles by 2 games in the AL East. Saturday September 28th: Stars (90-70) At Mets (74-86) Well, we staked Steve Cooke to a 4-0 lead and he couldn't hold it. He'd leave after going 6.1 and trailing 5-4. Abbott would give up 2 runs in the eighth inning and Mike Remlinger would put us away despite giving up a ninth inning run. Womacka nd Helton combined for 7 hits. Buhner had a homer and 4 RBI for the Mets. Final Score: Mets 7 Stars 5 Well, the Dodgers and Giants lost so....if only. Bleh. Baltimore won today to finally clinch the AL East. Sunday September 29th: Stars (90-71) At Mets (75-86) Nomo went 7 strong innings and left tied 2-2 with Dwight Gooden but Embree would give up an eighth inning run and John Franco would set us down in the ninth to complete the sweep. Blurgh. Helton & Burnitz had RBI's. Jeff Barry and Howard Johnson had solo homers to propel the Mets. Final Score: Mets 3 Stars 2 The Giants beat the Cardinals while the Dodgers lost to the Senators for the 2nd straight day to give San Fransisco the division title. Boy, that ought to haunt the Dodgers for a good long while. So the LCS match ups are Giants vs Expos in the NL and the Orioles Vs White Sox in the AL for the third straight season. Now then, here is where I have the right to complain. These fuckers were awful this season. I don't even know where to go with them, do they deserve spots next year? What can I get for them? It's a total shambles that I'll have to do some major soul searching on in the off season because outside of Hamilton I'm not sure I have a competent starter that I can rely on. Injuries to Pall & Hope hurt our pen for sure but dear god were they nearly as brutal. Embree & King couldn't get out a little leaguer and.......it's just a mess. Looking forward there isn't a lot of pitching help in the minors yet as most of our prospects are at least 2 seasons away. Rupe may provide some help at some point next season but after him it's pretty thin. We do have a fair amount of bats in the minors who could be trade bait or we could move a regular on the big league roster but it's clear that we need to add some pitching if we want to contend again, how we do that I just don't know because salary obviously needs to be cut some more, so where do we do that? I don't know. It'll be an interesting off season, that's for sure. The financial situation continues to be too much of a burden on us. Nobody is coming out to see us and nobody seems to care. We have a 10 year lease with the city but will be looking into relocation and possible stadium plans in other cities. I don't want to move but if things don't pick up we won't have much choice. |

Retirement: SS Alan Trammell decided to hang em up. He's joining Sparky Andersons coaching staff in Detroit. Retirement: RP Mo Sanford has had enough, he's had enough of toiling in the minors. Arbitration: Holy fuck! Shane Reynolds wants $700,000 at arbitration. You have got to be kidding me. This is really walking a tight rope. I don't want to make my offer too low and end up on the hook to this guy for $700,000 but I can't just let him walk. I offer $400,000 and win arbitration. Well I'm glad I won but I'm not sure he's even worth $400,000. Arbitration: Steve Cooke isn't being quite as greedy but he wants $580,000. We counter at $350,000 and he wins. Christ almighty. Expiring Contract: C Carlos Hernandez wants 3 years at $520,000 per year to return. The Twins of course wanted a boatload in return for him and that's what we gave up. Spiers was obviously the big piece and while it's not like I wanted him gone, it was clear that with Tejada and Matsui on their way I was going to have to make room somewhere and I wasn't keen on moving Womack. Drew and Encarnacion are two talented prospects but I feel like Carlos Lee and Scott Podsednik provide the same skill sets but with a higher upside. Reynolds was someone I didn't have a problem giving up in this deal. Yes he was hurt last year but I haven't seen anything out of him that says he'll be anything more than a back of the rotation guy. Teut is the major unknown. He's got potential but he's so far away. This was actually part of a multi team deal we had worked out. Did I want to give up on Fernandez? No. But in his three seasons with us I never sensed he was a legit one or two starter, so I might as well chuck his salary and get some pieces in return. This trade was about shaving Palls salary and nothing more. I had to give up a decent prospect in Eckenstahler but it was clear last year that Pall was losing velocity and he was injury prone. I just couldn't go into the season counting on him. I'm really sorry to see him go as I don't like losing original members of the team but it had to be done. Tremie is nothing more than roster filler but Mejia could challenge Counsell at some point so the utility infielder spot. Extension: SP Steve Cooke agrees to a 4 year deal worth $530,000 per year. Steve actually took a pay cut to sign this deal which guaranteed him a check for four years. Recap The Phillies made the biggest splash in the NL East by adding McGwire to offset losing Darren Daultons clubhouse leadership, the question remains though if any team has enough to overcome the Expos, The Cardinals and Mets add some key players but I just can't imagine anyone did enough to overtake the reigning NL champs. Out West the Giants added some pieces but it was the Dodgers who went full bore, they really made their bullpen a force at the expense of the Braves and Giants. They poached both those teams closers in free agency. Houston meanwhile retooled their pitching staff by adding a couple of quality starters and some veteran relievers. The Padres added a bunch of pieces but don't look to be a threat to the division just yet. The West should be just as exciting this year as last. In the AL East the Orioles didn't hesitate to counter the loss of Ben McDonald by signing not one but two front line starters as well as adding SS Tony Fernandez who is......penciled in at SS as Cal Ripken appears to be in the twilight of his career. The Indians added just a couple of veteran starters as they appear to be banking on their young stars maturing enough to carry them to the division crown this year. The Yankees meanwhile continue to spend money, adding a plethora of pieces and hoping it's enough. The Tigers, who had a remarkable run last year did not stand pat and added some flair in SP Mark Portugal and RF Jose Canseco, but it's probably not enough in such a tough division. The Red Sox meanwhile hope the addition of Daulton and a full and healthy season from Clemens can catapult them back into the thick of the AL East race. The Blue Jays and Brewers meanwhile probably didn't do enough to contend. Out West the White Sox and Mariners didn't do much but the Angels did shore up their bullpen, it could be another hot race this season between those 3 teams. The Twins meanwhile added some punch but likely lost too much pitching to seriously contend. The biggest move is that Womack will have to handle SS duties but the offense largely remains geared the same. Hulse will see his fare share of starts in LF against righties. Willie Greene still has a lot of pressure on him to produce from the cleanup spot and the fact that neither he or Burnitz can hit lefties is a concern but we have a balanced bench so we'll have to work around it. The bullpen is a total rework. So much rests on my belief that Small and Veras can be reliable late inning guys something I only have my gut to go on, but i've got quite a gut so...... Hope is a guy that I trust if either of them falters. Our lefties are a major question mark. Everything about them but their performance says they should be good, but performance is all that matter and theirs has sucked. All I know is that our pitching probably can't be as bad as it was last year so there ya go. Minor Leagues Code:
Matsui is penciled in to play all year at AAA with next year and a starting job in LF in his sights. Tejada will likely see AAA at some point this season but I want to be careful with him. Tatis is still a ways away, full seasons in AA and AAA are likely before he even sniffs the big squad but I like how he's coming along. Rupe is not gonna be an ace but he's maturing into what I hope is a solid rotation guy, I'd like to get him to AAA sometime this year but i'll be careful with him. Lee and Podsednik should be playing in AA at some point this season but Vazquez will likely get a whole year at A ball. Down in Rookie ball I anticipate all those guys moving to A Ball after the amatuer draft. Tuesday April 2nd: Stars (0-0) At Astros (0-0) Well it wasn't exactly the start I was hoping for but what can ya do? Radke went 6.1 and left on the hook for 2 runs as we trailed 2-0 to Mark Gubicza after seven innings. A Craig Counsell pinch hit RBI single would be our only run of the game as Gubicza went 8 and Billy Wagner came in and got the save. Our bats were deafly silent but oh well. They're ace bested our ace, it happens. Final Score: Astros 2 Stars 1 Wednesday April 3rd: Stars (0-1) At Astros (1-0) A bit more of a wild game here. We built Hamilton a 5-1 lead against Mike Hampton which he'd promptly blow. In fact by the 6th inning we trailed 8-5 but then our onslaught began. We would score seven times in the final 3 innings to secure the win. Eric Young was 3-4 with 2 RBI, Goodwin was 3-5 with 2 RBI, Willie Greene blasted a 2 run shot and Brian Jordan was 2-4 with 3 RBI. Steve Finley was 3-5 with 3 RBI for the Astros and Gonzalez & Bagwell 2 RBI. Final Score: Stars 12 Astros 8 Thursday April 4th: Stars (1-1) At Astros (1-1) Nomo went 6.1 and left down 4-1 to Rafael Quirico. We would cut it to 4-3 on an eighth inning Brian Jordan 2 run double but Hope and King would allow four eighth inning runs to up their lead to 8-3. We would plate a couple of runs in the ninth but it wasn't enough as they take 2 of 3 in the opening series of the season. Final Score: Astros 8 Stars 5 After the game we demote RP Kevin King to AAA. Behind seven strong innings from Steve Cooke we built a 6-1 lead against John Thomson. Hurst would allow 2 runs in the eighth and then after getting the first two outs in the ninth, Mark Small would allow 2 baserunners and give up a 3 run shot to Barry Larkin to tie the game. We would score in the bottom of the ninth off of Chris Hammond to win a wild game. Tom Goodwin and Brian Jordan each had 3 hits in the game. Barry Larkin was 2-5 with 2 HR & 4 RBI for the Reds. Attendance was 10,655. Final Score: Stars 7 Reds 6 Saturday April 6th: Stars (2-2) Vs Reds (2-2) Aaron Sele pitched a very solid seven innings and left tied 3-3 against Scott Klingenbeck. Jeromy Burnitz would pop an 8th inning solo homer off of Hector Carrasco and John Hope would pitch a perfect ninth to give us the win. Tony Womack had a 2 RBI single. Attendance was down to 8,300. Final Score: Stars 4 Reds 3 Robin Yount, who went through the off season unsigned, signed a one year deal with Milwaukee today and he returns to his original team coming off a season in which he was part of his first world championship team. Sunday April 7th: Stars (3-2) Vs Reds (1-4) Radke went 5.1 and left on the hook for 2 runs but we still held a 4-2 lead after six innings. They would score runs off our pen in the 7th and 8th to tie it and we went to extra innings where in the bottom of the 10th with 2 outs, Helton would double and then Greene would shoot a single over Barry Larkins head and Helton would come around to score the winning run, completing the sweep. Helton was 3-4 with a HR and Angelo Encarcion had a big 2 RBI double. Felix Jose was 4-6 and Kevin Mitchell was 3-5 for the Reds, each also added an RBI. Backed by a 2 run homer from the scorching Brian Jordan and a solo shot from Scott Sheldon, Joey Hamilton went 8 strong innings of 1 run ball and defeated Tom Glavine. Small and Embree pitched the ninth to close out a 4-1 win. Final Score: Stars 4 Braves 1 Wednesday April 10th: Stars (5-2) At Braves (1-6) Nomo was no match for Greg Maddux on this. Hideo gave up 6 runs in 6 innings, the bulk of which came off homers while Maddux went 8.2 innings before surrendering to Greg Woodall for the final out in a 1 run performance. Blauser & Justice each homered and Palmeiro added 2 RBI's. Brian Jordan added another homer and Goodwin had 2 hits but it wasn't nearly enough. Final Score: Braves 6 Stars 1 Thursday April 11th: Stars (5-3) At Braves (2-6) Steve Cookes only blemish in 6 innings of work was a 2 run double by David Justice in the 3rd inning. We would tie it with runs in the 5th and 7th but Embree allowed them to go ahead in the bottom of the 8th. In the ninth Eric Young would smack a solo home run off of Greg McMichael to send it to extra innings. Our pen did a wonderful job and in the 11th Eusebio would hit a sacrafice fly to score Counsell and put us ahead. Mark Small would get the save and we get out of Hotlanta with a nice 2 out 3. Young was 4-6 with 2 RBI, Helton had 2 hits and 2 runs scored and Jordan added 2 steals to his lofty early season numbers. Final Score: Stars 4 Braves 3 (11 Innings) Bad news as Eric Young has a sprained knee and will miss about 2 weeks. We DL him and bring up Dave Berg. Counsell will take over as the everyday 2nd basemen and Womack and Goodwin will share time at the leadoff spot. We head home to face the 7-2 1st place Dodgers in a pretty big early season matchup. I'm wondering if we can get attendance anywhere near 15,000. |

Katie bar the door. Sele would only go five innings, giving up just 2 runs on a 2 run Karros homer. We scraped a run in the 5th and then in the 7th Burnitz and Eusebio would hit back to back homers to give us lead off of Pedro Martinez. Our pen would pitch 4 scoreless innings including a 2 inning save from Mark Small and we take game 1 of the series. Attendance was 11,000. Final Score: Stars 3 Dodgers 2 Saturday April 13th: Stars (7-3) Vs Dodgers (7-3) We jumped on Erik Hanson for four runs in the first inning and Radke would hold it to 4-2 (1 earned)in his 6.2 innings of work. Hope would give up a run in the eighth and Embree and Veras would close it out in the ninth. Brian Jordan was 3-4. Offerman, Piazza & Bordick each had 2 hits for the Dodgers. Final Score: Stars 4 Dodgers 3 Sunday April 14th: Stars (8-3) Vs Dodgers (7-4) Hamilton went six innings and gave up 3 runs (2 earned) and left with a 4-3 lead. Our pen had another shut down day and we walk out with the series sweep in impressive fashion, winning all three games by a run. Willie Greene had a 2 run homer. Lance Johnson, Henry Rodriguez & Mike Bordick each had 2 hits for the Dodgers. Final Score: Stars 4 Dodgers 3 Todd Helton has a calf strain with will keep him out of action for 5 days. Nomo gave up just 3 runs in seven innings but left down 3-2 to Glenn Dishman. Veras would allow 2 runs in the ninth and Dishman silenced us en route to a complete game win. I hate losing to bad teams. Bleh. Jordan and Kevin Young had RBI's. Bip Roberts was 3-5 and Cory Snyder had 2 RBI for the Padres. Final Score: Padres 5 Stars 2 Wednesday April 17th: Stars (9-4) Vs Padres (6-7) Blargh! Cooke only gave up 3 runs in six innings of work but Matt Morris was dealing and our bullpen was a shit parade. Don Slaught and Alex Cabrera had 2 RBI each and Cory Snyder homered for the Padres. Jordan, Goodwin and Eusebio were all 2-4 for us in a losing effort. Our offense looks a bit lost without Helton & Young. Final Score: Padres 9 Stars 1 Thursday April 18th: Stars (9-5) Vs Padres (7-7) Son of a son of a son of a bitch. Sele carried a 3-0 lead into the 8th inning before tiring and before the inning was over it was tied at 3-3. They would score in the 11th and Otsuka would get the save to give the Padres the sweep pretty much negating the entire high of the Dodgers series. Don Slaught was 3-5 while Javier, Roberts & Cabrera each had an RBI. Final Score: Padres 4 Stars 3 (11 Innings) We're tied for 1st in the West with the Giants but only the Reds trail by more than 2.5 games. The Cardinals 12-4 record leads all of baseball and has them 2.5 up in the NL East, the Senators and Pirates are 5.5 and 8.5 games out respectively. Detroit leads a tight AL East and the Mariners at 12-5 are off to a quick start while the four time defending division champ White Sox sit at 7-11 and 5.5 games out. |

Final Score: Padres 5 Stars 4 Tuesday April 23rd: Stars (11-8) At Padres (10-9) Just a lifeless, listless effort. Sele gave up 3 runs in six innings and left down 3-1 to Jose Guzman. Hurst gave up 2 runs in the 7th and Pedro Martinez & Mike Fetters closed it out on us. We look like zombies. Stan Javier was 3-5, Don Slaught & Mike Staton were both 3-4 with 2 RBI. The most horrible loss I've ever had. Bleh. We jumped on Tavo Alvarez and built and 8-2 lead going into the 8th inning behind 7 strong innings from Joey Hamilton. We allow 2 runs in the eighth and then Davis and Veras would all 4 more runs in the ninth. They would score 3 in the tenth and go on to win. I am beside myself. Eusebio had 3 RBI while Jordan and Womack each had 3 hits and 2 RBI each. Helton homered. Larry Walker went 5-6 with a homer and 6 RBI in a monster performance. Greg Colbrunn added 3 hits for the Expos. Attendance was just under 10,000. Final Score: Expos 11 Stars 10 (11 Innings) Eric Young and Mark Small are both ready to go tomorrow. Moeller is sent down to AAA. Friday April 26th: Stars (12-10) Vs Expos (12-10) Nomo gave up 3 runs in five innings but left with an 8-3 lead as we bombarded old team mate Charles Nagy. The big story was Jeromy Burnitz and his two 3 run homers. Willie Greene added 3 hits and an RBI. Now way to complain about the start of Brian Jordans season. He's taken the opportunity to start every day and run with it, very impressive. Also happy with how Greene has handled the start to the season. Womack obviously is tearing it up too. Goodwin and Burnitz need to come around but i'm not too worried. I'm seeing a problem with our bench though, they really arn't bringing it like they did last year. Eusebios troubles have me thinking that we'll need to be looking for a Catcher next year maybe. He really hasn't grown much since his first year. Code:
Our starters have been magnificent. Radke has given us exactly what we needed and it seems to have trickled down thruought the staff. Only John Hope has been what I would call dissapointing but I'm not overly worried. Division Races The Cardinals own a 1 game lead on the Phillies in the NL East, only Washington & Pittsburgh are what you would call, out of it. We lead the West but it's a glut as the 6th place Braves are only 3.5 games back, the Reds are a dismal 7-18. Cleveland leads the AL East by 1.5 games but last place Baltimore is just 6 games out. Seattle at 18-10 leads the NL West by half a game over Minnesota as those two are the only teams in the division over .500 right now. League Leaders Hmm now. A Gentlemen by the name of Ricardo Ingram of the Tigers leads baseball with a .429 average. The Yankees Bernie Williams & Don Mattingly, Frank Thomas of the White Sox and Baltimores David Segui are all hitting over .400. Mark Grace of the Cubs leads the NL with a .388 average. Juan Gonzalez of the Rangers leads all of baseball with 10 homers. Jay Buhner of the Mets leads the NL with 8. Piazza, Lankford and Vinny Castilla all have 7 and Darren Daulton has 6 for his new team in Boston. Chuck Knoblauch and Pedro Munoz of the Twins lead the league in RBI with 30 and 25. Barry Bonds 24 pace the NL. Baltimores Mark McLemores 27 runs leads baseball while Craig Biggio at 23 leads the NL. Kenny Lofton and Pat Listach with 11 & 10 lead the league in steals. Deion Sanders and Lance Johnson each with 9 lead the NL. Minnesotas Latroy Hawkins has 5 wins to lead baseball. Greg Maddux at 1.14 leads baseball in ERA. Jeff Suppan of Boston leads the AL with 1.46 ERA. John Burkett of the Giants and the Phillies Kevin Foster & Doug Drabek round out the top 5. Curt Schilling, 40, and Mike Mussina, 34 lead their respective leagues in K's. Injuries The Braves are a bit snakebit this year. Rafael Palmeiro has a back strain that will keep him out till early June and John Smoltz suffered a broken leg that will sideline him till July at the earliest. Baltimores Jamie Moyer & John Smiley and the White Sox Kirk McCaskill missed most of April with arm issues but are expected back soon. The Mets promising 2B Edgardo Alfonzo broke his ankle and will be out till July. Detroits Tony Phillips is out till June with a slight tear of knee ligamints. The Tigers Milt Cuyler missed most of April with a hamstring issue. Boston has had to deal with starting pitchers Chuck Smith & Roger Clemens both being injured and missing multiple weeks. Smith isn't expected back till early June. Boston can't catch a break. Trades The Mariners made a pretty big move in acquiring RF Phil Plantier from the Padres for a couple of prospects. Good stuff here, I haven't read through all of it, just skimmed it. What program are you playing this on? Baseball Mogul? I normally play Out of the Park Baseball myself. Never have done a baseball dynasty report. My college basketball reports keep me busy enough. Right now I'm just enjoying playing some baseball games. Keep up the good work though.
