Prince Says Internet is 'Over'
Rock star and noted digital media expert Prince says the internet is 'over.' The Purple Rain singer has never sold his songs online and has no plans to start with his latest album 20TEN. Prince has had a long and public battle to keep all things Prince-related offline. In 2007 he sued eBay and YouTube, claiming� the people at the video sharing site 'are clearly able (to) filter porn and paedophile material but appear to choose not to filter out the unauthorised music and film content which is core to their business success.' He has also notoriously gone after his own fans, forcing three large fansites –Housequake.com, Princefans.com and Prince.org –� to remove all Prince images in 2007. The cease and desist notices reportedly went as far as calling for the removal of pictures taken by fans of their Prince tattoos and Prince-inspired licence plates. Also in 2007, YouTube was forced to pull a home video of a toddler dancing to Let's Go Crazy. Universal Music Publishing claimed the recording infringed copyright. The child's mother fought back, however, claiming that the video constituted fair use. Now the artist who was known as Prince, then wasn't Prince anymore and is now Prince again says the internet is over anyway. He tells The UK's Daily Mirror, 'The internet's completely over. I don't see why I should give my new music to iTunes or anyone else. They won't pay me an advance for it and then they get angry when they can't get it. 'The internet's like MTV. At one time MTV was hip and suddenly it became outdated. Anyway, all these computers and digital gadgets are no good. They just fill your head with numbers and that can't be good for you.' Prince will be giving the new album away in the UK's Daily Mirror on Saturday July 10. The giveaway is the only means of obtaining the album in the UK and Ireland. The paper says, somewhat paradoxically, 'The singer has shunned selling his eagerly-anticipated CD 20TEN in the shops or releasing it online because he wants as many people as possible to hear his music.' |

Psst...Prince: if you make your music available digitally, you have at least SOME control over its digital destiny.
If you don't, you have virtually none. That album is, rightly or wrongly, going to wind up online. It may not be all that widely disseminated, mind, but just saying "No sir, I don't like it" isn't gonna keep it off that thar' internet. |

The lede is a little puzzling. Prince was among the first major artists to begin offering entire albums exclusively over the web back in 1997. I've got 2 or 3 different albums of his through his old website, which he abruptly took down back in 2006.
I suspect what they mean is that he has never offered his stuff through 3rd party intermediaries like iTunes. That would fit right in with the paranoia he developed over big labels and magacorps during the whole symbol thing. In other news, Prince is eccentric. |

He does have a point about the iTunes thing though. The internet has totally changed the entertainment industry (stating the obvious) and the companies have no adapted yet and may never by the looks of things.
