When I was in Budapest, I had a massage by a 60 year old Hungarian man wearing nothing more than a cloth apron. Pedicures are nothing on the potential gayness scale compared to that experience.

I had a pedicure about two years ago...my wife bought one for me while my sis-in-law bought one for my brother. We justified it by watching football while the experts worked on our toenails...made us feel more manly. Still, it was pretty fooking awesome.

Well, I had a pretty substantial gift certificate to one of those fancy Elizabeth Arden spas that I needed to redeem before the end of the year, so I finally went for a reflexology massage and a facial.

I have to say that these corporate upscale places are really big on upselling--recommending treatments the next step up from what you signed up for, getting on a schedule, etc. They are always pushing the official product line too. In a lot of ways, they're even worse than auto repair shops.

But the reflexology was awesome--I usually hate massages since I'm pretty squeamish in general when it comes to heavy pressure required by massage, especially when it comes to my spinal column. The facial was good too--much pricier than what I've paid for in the past, but it was of suitably higher quality than what I've experienced in the past.

). Basically, it entails a really good washing of the feet (including exfoliation) and a foot and lower-leg massage. They clean up the toenails, clipping them neatly, and can paint the toenails, or put clear-coat on them (to make them stronger and keep them looking good longer) or do nothing (though quite often they do put the clear-coat on, regardless of gender). Ya know, I could never get a pedicure. I have an abnormal fear of people touching my feet... no tickling, no touching my toes, nothing. My dad used to pull on my toes and crack them like he did his knuckles, and it was painful, absolutely painful. I don't think I could get a manicure either because when my mom used to cut my nails, she'd cut them so low that she'd cut the flesh and I'd bleed.
