Poorly worded headline (aka Jamaal Magloire wins at life)

Cool story but sheesh, should be a little more careful with the headlines:

It was a tragic tale, far from the limelight of professional sports, but a story sad enough to stir an NBA star’s heart to quiet action.
When he heard of the murder last Monday of single mother Lucita Charles — who left behind a 7-year-old son with cerebral palsy — not only did Jamaal Magloire think he could help out, he did help out.
The 10-year NBA veteran paid for the funeral for Charles (the city’s 18th murder victim of this year) and plans to establish a trust fund for her orphaned son.
“When we see things like this in the news, we don’t know what to do. I wanted to show I could do something,” Magloire, a Toronto native, said by phone Saturday night.
“It just really touched me, the fact it was a single mother and she left behind a special-needs child,” he said.

Magloire, 32, who grew up in Toronto and still spends his off-seasons in his old downtown neighbourhood, said the proposed trust fund, which he hopes to establish with friends in the financial industry, will surpass the decision to pay for the funeral costs.
“That’s the most important thing: what’s going to happen to (Charles’ son),” he said. “We’re going to try to set up this fund for him so that maybe in the future, when he needs special treatment or a special doctor, he can get it.”
Magloire, who finished his 10th NBA season with the Miami Heat in early May, has no connection to Charles or her family.
But, as a resident of the city and as someone who takes being a role model for youngsters seriously, he knew if he could help he had to.
He didn’t do it for the publicity — he was upset that news of his actions first leaked out — but because he cares a bit.
Tragedy of a similar nature struck close to home in 2001 when Magloire’s half-brother, Justin Sheppard, was murdered near the Sherbourne subway station. The crime has never been solved.
“I just feel an obligation and a responsibility to be an ambassador for the city any time I can,” he said. “I really feel I can make a difference and lead by example. This is my city, it’s my home. I want to help.”
Charles was found dead in her apartment on Harding Ave., near Jane St. and Trethewey Dr., on Monday afternoon.
A suspect, Patrick Kirk Barrett, 39, was charged with second-degree murder. He appeared in court Thursday morning and was remanded in custody.
Magloire rose from starring at Eastern Commerce as a high schooler to a long NBA career that included an all-star game appearance. He remains a familiar face in his local community, helping mentor teens, supporting Caribana initiatives and serving as a role model to those who want it.
“I put a lot of expectations on myself,” he said. “I know I can’t help everybody but I want to do my part however I can.
“And it’s not just monetary. It’s my time, it’s my advice, it’s helping kids in the community get a chance.”

I think you could certainly say that he is in the general definition of the word "star" which is how it was being used here. He's an NBA Star, not a Star NBA player.
