I work in e-marketing, so I'm pretty much obligated to be on there.
To be honest, I don't really see the point. But please don't tell anyone, the others will laugh at me.

I'd never heard of it until I read Penny-Arcade today.

Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?

Twitter = micro-blogging platform
Put simplisticly, imagine Facebook if it only had the "status update" part.

Interesting. Not to get off topic, but has anyone used Meebo.com? It's a simple website that lets you log in to your AIM, MSN, Yahoo, GoogleTalk, etc account. No software installation and all your IM windows stay within the one browser, so you don't have 10 different windows open.
My company has a strict policy of not installing AIM on any work computer. Clearly, this is not installing AIM (AIMExpress seems to get messed up by our firewall). Anyway, yesterday I had to get my laptop fixed so I took it to one of our pain in the ass IT guys, the kinda guy who will give you crap for having a sole unencrypted file on your computer even if the only info contained in it is your list of stuff to buy at the Food Emporium. I get up there and catch him on Meebo. He was a little slow in Alt-tabbing away from it. I now have my bargaining chip in case he or anyone else gives me shit about internet use. So I have that going for me, which is nice... |

Meebo is awesome. You don't have to download any software and it works on all the big services in any browser. And yes, it probably isn't blocked at most workplaces.

hmmm maybe i'm starting to show my age, but i just don't get it. it seems excruciatingly useless. why would anyone care about what i'm doing? i know i don't give a crap about what anyone else in the world is doing.
maybe if i had any friends i'd feel differently? dunno

Hell yes. I like it for the simple fact that there is no installation and a message window doesn't pop up when your co-workers or boss is in your office since that is contained in the browser.

would you just leave it at that all the time, or constantly re-post the message at random intervals?

wouldn't the answer in every update have to be "updating my twitter"?

I used to have a private Twitter. Then I got over it, because it's just not that intense. Mostly random thoughts, some talking to higher ed folks and awesome random music quotes. Last edited by Young Drachma : 10-15-2009 at 11:36 PM. |

as a geek I feel obligated to be on Twitter - but I really don't use it much. I do find it useful to find "breaking news"
I also echo the Meebo thing - great software. Same idea as Trillian but you don't need to install a client. I use it everyday. |

Honestly I think 2009 will be the year Twitter explodes into the mainstream. Twitter grew exponentially last year and is slowly moving away from its "geeks only" beginnings.

I haven't the slightest idea what a "twitter" is, but I took an STD test last summer and I was all clear.

On the other hand, with Facebook status doing something similar, I wonder if that'll cut in to the growth. I know that I'm far more into Facebook. But I guess, I've heard that a lot of current events have news breaking on Twitter. They need to intregrate the Twitter search better into it.

I think Twitter and Facebok status updates really go in two different directions. Facebook's status update is more "what are you doing" and the more I use Twitter, the more I see its value in conversations rather than answering the question "what are you doing." I see people connecting via Twitter because of similar interests/goals/etc whereas on Facebook I don't see those kinds of connections because only friends can see your status update.

I have it, but I don't I've ever used it. Mainly use it just to see the updates from some of the people who write blogs that I read. I may start using it, though. Anyway, name is:the same as here: sabotai.

Yea, I don't get the whole Twitter, Facebook thing. If I want to talk to you, I'll call you or send you an email. Believe me, having my day to day life's minutae displayed for all to see might just cure someones insomnia.

For me, it's been useful to connect with people in my industry who've been reading my blog or from other venues like conferences and the such. It's a low-key way to do it, without having to get all up in their personal lives.
Everyone uses it differently too and there are apps out there that help you synthesize the noise. But for the average Joe? It's a huge waste of time. If I weren't a web professional, I'm certain I'd never use it and only one person who I associate with in my personal life uses Twitter.

Myspace is garbage. Facebook is insanely useful. Twitter seems pointless, but I can understand people being into it.
Most people I've seen that say they don't get facebook get it after they try it. It really doesn't have much to do with displaying day to day minutiae for most people, though you can do that. It is mostly about keeping up with people more easily. There are many, many people that I would never see or hear from again if it weren't for facebook. That is kind of nice. There are people that I can be in touch with almost instantly that I had forgotten even existed without facebook. You may think, as I once did, that you forgot they existed for a reason, but I'm sure there are people out there you'd like to see again and just may not be able to think of right away. Heck, I found out my first crush in elementary school is a belly dancer now. I talk to her on facebook from time to time now. Hadn't seen her since high school until facebook, and now I can talk to her without really going out of my way. It is really convenient. |

Facebook, I definitely get much more... with Facebook (and using real names), I was able to find a ton of old high school friends. Quote:
I know, but it can be a bit of a pain linking them, IMO. I tend to see Twitter as more minutae and Facebook as more general status. Of course, that's just a personal preference, but I dislike when people have too many status changes in short time in Facebook for some reason.

what i more meant is its not our generations that decide this stuff. its college and high school. if thats where they all go (twitter), guess what is about to be huge.
you may say you dont get it, but its about to enter the mainstream, bigtime. and it is a pretty useful thing, but moreso for kids. ill be at x party. im at this bar and bored, come by. y broke my heart, feel sorry for me. etc. dont forget how out there the kids are. they post everything about their lives at this point (why couldnt we be younger now. "stalking" is as easy as clicking one button) |

Yeah, that was the thing pre-blogs for a lot of young folks. It's still popular for some of the communities that are there for some. I have an account solely for that purpose there, as I deleted my real one years ago. Sorta like AOL was at the end of the 90s when folks were jumping ship to just get internet providers. Well and livejournal has had a lot of random owners and can't seem to find anyone to make it profitable.
