US planned to blow up the moon in the 50's

US Planned To Blow Up The Moon In 1959: Report | Photos

Thought this was an onion article at first. I see it in several sites though now. New stuff I guess revealed. I wonder how much truth is in it. Scary shit regardless that someone would even think this was a good idea.

Read the title and assumed the plan was for this to be done "Armageddon" style...full explosion from the inside. That's "blown up". This is "detonate a bomb".

Yeah...don't think 1 nuke (especially a 1950's yield one) would "blow up" the whole moon, would it?

Yeah, and to make another movie reference, I kind of imagine these guys in the 50s watching the explosion, expecting it to "blow up" and the end result looking like when they fired a nuke at the alien ship in Independence Day.
