Lost another former player

It seems like I have been through this far too many times....

Yesterday a player of ours from the 2005 team suffered a heart attack and passed away, brought on Doctors said by going between a cold swimming pool and a hot tub. 24 years old doing stuff we and many others did at that age. When you see these kids in prime shape as teenagers playing for you, even as a coach you can get caught in the "I wish I was 18 and invincible again" mindset.

In the last 12 years I have lost WAY too many former players to various causes.

17yr old - Drowning
19yr old - Suicide
20yr old - Heart failure
22yr old - Hit by Truck

And now the latest........You just get so close to so many of these kids and form special bonds it is like losing one of your own.

Just really needed to express my feelings, cause I am sitting here just in shock right now. RIP JB

Rough. Very rough. My condolences to you, and of course his friends, family and former teammates and coaches.

I can relate BYU, and it never gets easier to take, does it?

Sorry to here this BYU. I can only imagine how tough that is. I coached my step daughters softball teams and it would have broken my heart if anything had happened to one of the girls on any of those teams.

Thanks guys, I appreciate it. Ironically we had our team barbeque tonight for returning varsity players, which kicks off spring practice for us every year. Obviously none of the current players knew him, but we touched on it briefly and talked about a lot of things related to life beyond Football.

It was actually very therapeutic for all of us that have been together as a staff for a long timel and also one of the deeper pre-spring BBQ's we have ever had.

We have a very solid core group of kids this season, not the biggest or most intimidating group, which is business as usual for us. Just athletic, scrappy and tough kids that are very commited to each other. Looking at their faces as we all spoke to them reinforces why I do this. (and why my retirement lasted only 1 season, LOL)

As anyone who has coached and spend long hours with their kids knows, you geniunely get to love them and just like your own you never want to see anything bad happen to any of them. Tonight was about getting them ready and on task for another season, but as happens so often, we benefitted more from them then they did from us, as being around them just eased the pain a little.

Very sorry to hear. Tragedy anytime someone loses their life at such a young age. You do feel invincible when you are younger.
