Ryan Clowe is going to catch Crosby in the scoring race.

Tonight.

Pretty nuts. Two goals and an assist for Clowe. A goal and three assists for Brassard. And now John Moore adds a goal.

Solid deadline day.

It's hard to know whether this slide the Canes are on is worse than the one where they pretty much destroyed their season before it started a few years back, but it continued tonight as Tampa beat them senseless, 5-0, and it was noticeable early in the third period that the team had pretty much quit. I don't think Mueller's job is on the line yet, but it's clear he's not able to rally these guys right now. He'll probably be fine because the perception is that the injuries to Cam Ward and Justin Faulk doomed the team (though no one seems to remember the Canes doing just fine for a few games after Ward's injury). Inasmuch as it's the mess he made by continuing to build a roster for the NHL of 2006 with all these puck-moving defensemen who can't play worth anything in their own end and a bunch of forwards who have no scoring touch or net presence, I'd like to think maybe Jim Rutherford's job is in some jeopardy, but he's part owner of the team, so who knows how easy it will be to remove him should it come to that?

I let my subscription run out, but still bought a copy of THN Future Watch. One of my favorites.

Not sure I'll get to any/many tonight. But hopefully have some down time at work tomorrow, or over the weekend. Leave requests for any team rundowns you're interested in.

This is getting ridiculous at this point. You can pretty much write a multiple choice question that asks, "How will the Carolina Hurricanes lose tonight's game?"

A) Poor goaltending and/or defense
B) Poor special teams play
C) A and B
D) Played a good game, just ran into a hot goaltender
E) None of the above (wait, they won?)

Tonight's answer is (D).

So....

I may have been a little premature back when I suggested the Caps should amnesty Ovi.

Going to do these the same as in prior years

Overall rank (out of 30) and grade (A through F). Rank/grade also takes into account any NHL regulars 21 and under.

ADR score (+/- difference between rank above compared to average draft position since 2009. In theory, if you are Edmonton, and your ADR is 1, and your prospect group ranks 1, you're even.)

I guess, again, because of timing, Galchenyuk and Gallagher are not considered under 21 NHLers, but prospects, because of the lockout.

I've probably mentioned this before, but...Gibson would have gone to the same HS I did. Was in the school district until leaving for the NTDP. His parents still live 3 houses down from my cousin, one borough over from us. And he's been at school district events at the elementary schools...my son thinks it is awesome a kid not just from Pittsburgh, but who lived maybe a mile away, will be in the NHL someday soon.

Pretty neat to see the Ducks ranked so high now. Imagine if they had kept Schultz, too. Fowler is already 21? I thought he was younger.

Some of those guys are already playing for them (and doing well, so, awesome!).

You are right, missed that.

Edited to add Fowler and Devante Smith

Crazy to think a guy like Etem, who many people thought was a steal at 29, barely cracks the top 5.

It's nuts to see how much Gibson's stock has risen. These sites also pretty consistently rank Palmieri above Etem, I must be missing something there.

Very excited about the future of this team. Whatever you think about Murray as a GM, the scouting department is absolutely nails. Lindholm looks like a great pick that nobody expected as well

For the most part (though Palmieri over Etem goes again the grain on this), newer prospects are almost exclusively listed ahead of older prospects. I don't know if it's a bias of the scouts (shiny, new toy syndrome), or as the prospects graduate, they are exposed against stronger competition.

As an example, Simon Despres has been pretty solid for the Pens (when in the lineup) towards the end of last year and most of this year. He looks like a guy who, at 21, will eat 20+ minutes a night.

He ranks 5th on Pittsburgh's list. Behind 3 other D in Olli Maatta, Derrick Pouliot and Joe Morrow, plus Beau Bennett.

The same Morrow who, at age 20, was scratched for 8 games in the first half of the AHL season because of his defensive game.

I can't wrap my head around the guy who has already played in the NHL, at 21, being below a guy struggling to crack an AHL lineup, at 20.

thanks. Hishon has finally started playing in the AHL and has been playing well. good to see him recover from that nasty hit by McNabb.

the top 3 really should be Barrie, Siemens and then Elliott, whose stock has been falling. oh, and Gaunce was moved to Dallas at the deadline.

Random thought on the Kings...and a bit of perspective on the rankings in general.

I love looking back at prior year issues. I believe it's the 2009 Future Watch, Jonathan Quick ranks 10th of Kings prospect. And is behind Bernier, Jones and Jeff Zatkoff as far as goaltending prospects. The note said something to the effect of spending time in the ECHL and "losing ground in the goaltending race".

Oops

Thanks, SR.

Not surprised to see that the Oilers top the list but I'm curious to see how the mid to later round guys pan out...hitting on a few of those guys could go a long way to making the damn playoffs. Ugh.

(E)?

Yes, (E)! For the first time in seven games! Woo!

Now that they've satisfied their pride, they can try to go back to the "Suck for Seth" strategy they were employing before.

Just got back from my last Jets game of the year. What a game! Pavelec made some amazing stops, Byfuglien laid out some sweet hits, and then the winner in OT capped it off.

With Washington losing we are now 2 points back of them and we play them once still. I'm not sure who holds any tie-breakers between them but there is a chance it could come down to that depending on how the next 4 games go.

Go Jets Go!!!

Last regular season...or did you end up not getting playoff tix?

I'd love to see Winnipeg slide in as the 8 seed. And not just saying that because I think that's a great matchup for the Pens

I suppose if they make the playoffs there is a chance I could go, but it's not a given. I have 1/8th share of our seats, so even if we got the 3-seed and hosted 4 games in round 1 I'd only have a 50/50 chance of getting to a game.

And those odds drop considerably if we are the road team against someone like the Pens

Why are you such a hater? Besides, he's killing it with the Winterhawks this year. So bust seems less likely.

I don't see Jones as having any potential of "busting"...depending on your definition.

I think, worst case, he has a relatively long career as a serviceable depth D. That may be a bust for some people, not me. He may not be a 15+ year top pairing guy, but he'll play.

Avs suck.

Thanks for playing.

Though I admit if he somehow ended up in Denver and I were still stuck in the hinterland, I'd be down to watch them once or twice more.

Look at it this way...if the Avs win the lotto, they could probably trade back to #2 if that team (Florida if they finish last) really wants MacKinnon, get an additional pick or prospect, and take Jones at 2...cheer for that!
