2004 Playoffs

In the Divisional Playoff round, Washington topped St. Louis, 30-21.

In the NFC Championship, Washington dispatched division-rival Philadelphia fairly easily, 23-10.

2004 Super Bowl

The Skins destroyed the Dolphins 48-13 in a typical Super Bowl blowout to become repeat champions. This year, Washington had the home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, instead of having to advance from the Wild Card round to get to the Super Bowl like in 2003. I think that they would agree that it is preferable to do it this way.

As for us, no playoffs, but we did make some strides. And we have another high draft pick for 2005, so hopefully we can continue our ascension to mediocrity. On the plus side, Dallas didn't make it either. Ha!

Bill's Cumulative Losses Through 2004

Table of Losses:

Season Team Losses
2000 $620,000,000
2001 18,000,000
2002 14,000,000
2003 134,600,000
2004 169,300,000

Total $955,900,000

Retirements

Being a young team, with the exception of a few players, we had no player retirements. Dallas, on the other hand, lost three guys, including their beloved Troy Aikman. Well boo-hoo-hoo!

New York:
None

Dallas:
Troy Aikman, QB
Harvey Swane, T
Chad Hennings, DT

Good riddance! Go fishing with Jimmy Johnson, Troy!

2005 Offseason

New Scout search
We began the offseason by searching for a replacement for Cory Wells, our lead scout. Our search for an offensive-minded guy who is good with young players led us to Oliver Ramthun, a 42 year old scout from Seattle (37-43-1) with the following ratings:

QBs Very good
RBs Very good
WRs Fair
OLs Very good
Kickers Poor
DLs Very good
LBs Fair
Secondary Good
Young Talent Very good

We took no chances with him, offering $1 million a year for 5 years. Unsurprisingly, he accepted our offer.

(Not) Doin' It For The Fans
Fan loyalty has dropped to 5%. I'm beginning to see a pattern here...

We decided not to touch the ticket prices. The bleachers will be empty anyway.

Free Agency
Not wanting our surprise breakout player from last year to defect, we decided to Franchise DT Jackie Tuten, since his loyalty ranking was low.

Re-signed Players

Here are the important re-signings we made this year.

Name Pos. Salary Dur. Bonus
Erik Williams T $10.84 3 yrs $4.00
Kyle Diaz WR $16.36 4 yrs $2.62
Levon Ned DE $15.92 4 yrs $1.62
J.T. Kearse FB $11.25 4 yrs $4.50
Jimmie Willis G $2.73 3 yrs ---

Free Agent Cowboys

Having re-signed our own players, we turned our eyes to the Cowboys roster. This is Bill's favorite part of the offseason!

The top free agent for the Cowboys was Greg Ellis, a fan favorite DE. Unfortunately, he was Franchised, so no dice. However, Solomon Page, last season's Franchised guard, was left unprotected, as well as solid WR Jason Tucker and Ebenezer Ekuban, a DE who had 11.5 sacks in 2004.

Page signed for $15 million over 4 years in the first round of free agency, while Jason Tucker soon followed for $13.7 million over 3 years. Ekuban was less quick to sign. We had the Cowboys' offer beaten by millions, so we were confident he would sign eventually. However, his low loyalty rating fooled us, as he re-signed with the Cowboys for much less than we had offered in round 8 of free agency. Our first unsuccessful attempt to steal a Dallas player!

2005 Draft

Sitting with the third overall pick in the draft, we targeted 3 players:

Kelvin Gonzalez, a 5'7" receiver with high ratings across the board. However, our scout is only fair at rating WRs. Bill and I suspect he will bust.

Ken Francis, a 6'1" 306 pound guard rating 4.3 with potential to estimated at 7.5, is also available.

However, we decided to draft James Pond, a 6'6", 309 pound tackle with 4.3/7.3 ratings. We want someone who can compete with Junior Adams for the starting right tackle position. We have serious doubts about Adams' durability, since he missed about half of the games last season due to injury.

2005 Draft Summary

Rnd 1 - James Pond, T, Cal. - Poly SLO
Rnd 2 - Pete Cash, QB, Presbyterian
Rnd 3 - Terrell Mott, RB, Maryland
Rnd 4 - Duane Brustkern, G, Rutgers
Rnd 5 - Tracy Flowers, WR, New Mexico
Rnd 6 - Darrell Sutter, S, Texas - El Paso
Rnd 7 - Tommy Perkins, CB, Baylor

Hank, that was an astute observation (one that I failed to make myself). Apparently, Philly didn't see fit to hang on to him. The fools! No more favors for them!

It was another rough exhibition season. It'd sure be nice to win once in a while. I guess this will make it sweeter when we do start winning.

Unhappy

2005 Regular Season

This was the most disheartening season so far, especially since we got swept by the Cowboys. We were plagued by injuries to key players throughout the season, and were never able to get on track at all. Bill and I expected to continue our upward arc this year, so this season has left a bitter taste in our mouths.

2005 Season Final Team Ratings:

Season Ending Power Rating: 23

Team Rankings for 2005 Season

Our passing offense was average, but everything else was pretty disgusting. We just were not a good team at all in 2005. I'm losing a little bit of faith in me & Bill's quest here. Maybe it isn't gonna work out...

Rushing offense 31st 1263 yds
Passing offense 16th 3410 yds
Rushing defense 32nd 2324 yds
Passing defense 23rd 3594 yds

We did pretty well with 42 sacks, but our lack of players taking the ball away on D killed us, as our -16 turnover ratio shows.
Defense wins championships, and no defense wins very little...

Sacks 10th 42
Interceptions 32nd 9
Turnover margin 30th -16
Points scored 15th 307
Points allowed 32nd 415

Wish us some luck, folks. The mood is just plain ugly around here...

2006 Offseason

Coach/Scout Changes

We stuck with Gibson and Ramthun because we couldn't find anyone more promising than either of them in this year's crop. Bill and I are trying to just disregard last season entirely and write it off as bad luck. The mood is still pretty somber around here though. This will be our last season in New York, and we badly need to pick up some momentum to carry us into our new home in Waco.

2006 Hall Of Fame Inductees

Dallas
Emmitt Smith, RB

Retirements

New York:

None. We were worried Williams might call it a career, but he opted to stay on for another season.

Dallas:

Raghib Ismail, WR
Mark Stepnoski, C

Fan Loyalty Rating: 0

Ticket Prices: No change.

2006 Franchise Info

We lost 122.05 million in 2005, a new record that put us over the billion dollar mark in losses. Bill was enthused.

Renegotiated Contracts of Note

Player Pos. Salary Dur. Bonus
Jackie Tuten DT $30,850,000 5 yrs $4,000,000
Keith Bennett WR $18,250,000 4 yrs $1,800,000
Luke Brooks CB $11,770,000 4 yrs $1,200,000
Tracy Long C $9,920,000 3 yrs $1,400,000
Broderick Emmons LB $5,810,000 3 yrs $900,000

Trades

In an effort to free up some salary cap room to sign away some Dallas players, we traded WR Billy Couch and our Sixth Round pick to Jacksonville for their Third Round pick (24).

We also accepted a trade which sent David LaFleur to Baltimore in exchange for a Fourth Round pick (13) and CB Nolan Cage, who we rated as much better than any of the CBs on our roster in 2005.

Finally, in a move that was difficult but logical, we sent Harvey Kegley to Seattle in exchange for their Second Round pick (17). We just couldn't justify keeping him after he averaged only 3.0 yards per carry with no touchdowns in 2005. Hopefully he can get a fresh start in Seattle. We wish Harvey the best of luck and hope there will be no hard feelings. Business is business, after all.

Cuts

We cut Trevor Collier and Brock Donohue to free up additional space under the
cap.

Dallas Free Agents of Note

The only player we considered worthy of going after from Dallas was Four-Time All-Pro First-Team DE Greg Ellis. He did not go to the Pro Bowl in 2005, but had gone each of the four previous seasons. Our scout rated him as 74 against the run and 89 against the pass. The fact that he was also a fan favorite made our desire to steal him away even stronger.

We initially offered him $41,040,000 over 5 seasons with a hefty $9,600,000 bonus. He didn't sign in the first few rounds, but we noticed that Dallas had not even made him an offer at all. Gambling, we withdrew our original offer to him and offered him a new contract worth $34,000,000 over 4 seasons with a $6,580,000 bonus in week 3. Since it was still his highest offer, Ellis accepted the contract in week four of the free agent signing period. Another fan-favorite former felon (I mean "Cowboy!") defects to the enemy! Yesssss!!!!

2006 Draft

With the Fourth overall pick in the 2006 draft, we found ourselves in a bit of an ordeal. There were two guys on the board that we really wanted, and another guy who looked tempting but wasn't in a need position for us.

First, there was Joel Harden, a 5'6" cornerback out of Texas-El Paso with a 4.9
current/7.8 future rating. Our scout rated him as 34/42 on run D, 74 man-to-man, 70 zone, 95 interception, and 52 endurance. He looked like he could really help out our struggling secondary.

Also on the board was a 6'4", 220 pound quarterback named Dexter McNeil who we really liked. The consensus on him was 3.9 current/5.0 future. Ramthun rated him at 22/66 on screen passes, 19/58 short, 27/93 medium, 22/73 long, 23/60 deep, 67 on third downs, 18/81 passing accuracy, 18/59 throwing power, 76 scramble frequency, and 72 for carrying. We really thought he could come in and push Cash for the starting position.

Finally, there was Chester "Duran" Duran, a 6'0" receiver with a catch rating of 33/93, yards per catch of 83, and a catch frequency of 25/75. However, we liked our receivers already and had more pressing needs in just about all other areas, so we passed on him and Arizona took him at the Eleventh spot in the draft.

After an agonizing period of deliberations, we passed on McNeil and took Joel Harden with the fourth pick of the draft. We figured our D needed the most help, and with Bill's rule about only drafting defensive players from Texas, an opportunity like this wasn't likely to come along very often.

We tried to trade up into the Top Ten draft picks in order to get a shot at McNeil, but nobody was biting. As we watched the First Round go by, McNeil kept falling. After pick sixteen was made and McNeil was still on the board, we got on the phone and offered QB Bill Berger, our Second and Seventh round picks in 2006, and our First and Sixth Round picks in 2007, to Seattle in exchange for pick number Seventeen of the 2006 draft. They accepted, and we were greeted with a chorus of boos as Tagliabue announced the trade to the draft day crowd. Undeterred, we took McNeil with the Seventeenth overall pick and crossed our fingers that our little hunch about him was right.

We also used a pair of Third Round picks to get a punter and a kicker since our kicking game was really weak last season. We need to start giving our offense better field position and also give the other teams worse field position to start their drives with if we are ever going to put up some better numbers.

2006 Draft Summary:

Rnd 1 - Dexter McNeil, QB, Louisville
Rnd 1 - Joel Harden, CB, Texas - El Paso
Rnd 2 - Kevin Castillo, WR, North Carolina State
Rnd 3 - Lincoln Shah, P, West New Mexico
Rnd 3 - Broderick Hidalgo, K, Nebraska
Rnd 4 - Cedric Wallenbrock, RB, Iowa State
Rnd 4 - Rico Hampton, C, Rutgers
Rnd 5 - Randall Mitchell, TE, Bucknell

As it turned out, Harden was very difficult to negotiate with. He wouldn't budge from his asking price at all. Finally, we gave in and signed him to his requested 5 year, $26,370,000 contract, which included a whopping bonus of $16,200,000. For that kind of money, he had BETTER become a star.

McNeil signed a 4 year, $11,750,000 contract with a relatively modest $5,000,000 bonus.

After signing the remaining draft picks, we got down to the business of planning the 2006 training camp.

2006 Regular Season

The 2006 season was a breath of fresh air for us. We finished just one game below .500 (7-9), and were not elimanted from playoff contention until the final week of the season. After last year's debacle, we find ourselves with reason to hope as we head to Texas next season.

Game 2 did not go as well. Cash was totally ineffective. Following this game, we benched Cash for the rest of the season in favor of McNeil. That may seem unfair, but we can not tolerate losing to the Cowboys!

Greg Ellis, All-Pro 1st Team Defensive End

We knew Greg had it in him when we stole him from Dallas. We expect him to do this many times in the future. We just need some other guys to start earning some awards too.

I thought it would be interesting to provide a few stats that summarize our little enterprise up to this point in time. I should warn you, though, it's kindof ugly...

GATES BUYS VOTES; RENAMES WACO "GATESVILLE"!!!

The A.P. newswire
-Waco, Texas

In the wildest case of voting booth chaos since the infamous hanging chads debacle in the 2000 Presidential election that eventually went to former one-half-term President George W. Bush (later impeached in the "OilGate" scandal in December of 2002), Bill Gates announced today that a referendum which would give him the right to rename Waco had passed by an incredible 97% to 3% margin.

Bill Gates, the controversial Seattle multi-billionaire who plans to rename this notorious Texas city "Gatesville," agreed to pay every resident of Waco the equivalent of one year of their current salary if the measure passed. Sources claim that Gates privately worried that Waco's checkered past would lower his team's popularity among fans, and decided to rename the city to avoid this potential pitfall.

Gates won a bid to move the New York Giants franchise to Waco in back in 2002 as part of his ongoing feud with Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys.

The bad blood between the two businessmen began in the spring of 2000 when Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones refused to sell his franchise to Gates for a reported $1 billion. In retaliation, Gates bought the NFC East division rival New York Giants franchise in the summer of 2000 and has since attempted to sabotage the Cowboys franchise at every opportunity. Gates, who has been publicly referred to by Jones as a "lunatic billionaire," has made a habit of signing away Dallas free agents in the offseason, and even once traded all of his best players to division rivals of Dallas just to punish Jones' team. Many people credit Dallas arch-rival Washington's back-to-back Super Bowl championships in 2003 and 2004 to this move.

A beaming Gates, who will pay the residents of Waco $6.62 billion dollars (200,000 residents X $33,100 average yearly salary), said the 3% percent of residents who voted against the measure were "free to return the checks" if they didn't want them.

The as of yet unnamed team will begin playing in the newly-constructed Microsoft Stadium (located just 89 miles from the Cowboys' Texas Stadium) during the upcoming 2007 season.

Well, looks like they snubbed me. I wasn't even mentioned in the A.P. article, despite the fact that I am the team GM. Oh well - sometimes it's hard to live in Bill's shadow, but it sure pays well!

Keep an eye out for Part II of the Bill Gates Challenge, coming soon to a computer near you!

Until we meet again,
