Same- I lament that I may not live long enough to see us do much in the space arena. I was born after we made it to the moon and, really, Mars would be a big deal but we already left the planet. Now I'm curious about much deeper space: going to other stars, for instance. Although colonization would be very neat.

We'll never have everything figured out. 200 years from now(if we haven't killed ourselves off) people will lament they won't live to see xyz.

I do however consider myself extremely lucky to be able to experience the peak of the information age. It's been an amazing ride. I wonder if humans 200, 300, 500 years ago felt the same about their technological wonders.

I think its the beginning of the information age, not the peak?

As of now we have instant access to more information than our brains can process, on pretty much any topic and any period of time. I don't see a terrific amount of change. However we probably have only just begun to experience what the effects of the information age will bring.

Count me in the group that thinks we're just at the tip of the iceberg regarding the information age. 1000 years from now society will have changed drastically from how we live now. With any luck, radicalism and short-sighted selfishness will give way to unity and understanding over that period.

If I could freeze myself at age 50 and be woken up in the year 2500, I would do it.

Absolutely. Or even 3000.

How much would you pay for it? That's the real question right?

So, we decide to send the first piece of music to and back from Mars and choose Will I Am ?
Sometimes i think we are really lucky that aparently no one is out there (at least within our reach), i somehow doubt he´d be impressed

I'm still convinced that if we ever come up with FTL travel in 1,000 years, one of the first missions is going to be to go out and grab the Voyagers and bring them back before any aliens see the crap we left in them.

Here's your grandpa ... when is it supposed to meet up with Kirk again?

Voyager 1 probe poised to leave solar system after 35 years - latimes.com
Quote:
In 1977, Jimmy Carter moved into the White House, "Star Wars" and "Saturday Night Fever" premiered in theaters and the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft launched from Florida's Cape Canaveral to explore the outer solar system.

In the years since, there have been five more presidents and five more "Star Wars" movies; disco has given way to punk, grunge and rap; and the Voyagers have flown billions of miles past Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

Their explorations aren't over yet.

As scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Cañada Flintridge marked the mission's 35th anniversary this week, they marveled that Voyager 1 was poised to leave the solar system — crossing the so-called heliopause and entering the vastness of interstellar space.

When that happens, Voyager 1 will become the first spacecraft launched from Earth to "leave the bubble," said former JPL Director Edward Stone, who still serves as a project scientist on the mission as a member of Caltech's Space Radiation Lab.

So, NPR and NASA have joined forces to...tease us?

Big News From Mars? Rover Scientists Mum For Now : NPR

The author uses the word "earthshaking" and quotes a scientist as describing their find as being "one for the history books," if confirmed. I can't help but wonder if they've found some compelling evidence of life, either past or present, on Mars.

I love this stuff and can't wait for the formal announcement. In a way, though, I wish they'd have just waited to say anything until their results were final. The wait is going to be frustrating, and I harbor the fear that NASA may be playing up a finding that will prove disappointing.

I know. I loathe myself a bit for that too.

In looking for clues, I found the NASA description (from SAM: Sample Analysis at Mars on the rover 'Curiosity') of the purpose of the instrument that was used in this discovery:

The Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) investigation onboard the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Curiosity rover is designed to investigate the chemical and isotopic composition of the Martian atmosphere and volatiles extracted from powdered solid surface samples. It will conduct a sensitive search for organic compounds and measure the isotopic composition of carbonaceous material. SAM's investigations support the mission goal of quantitatively assessing the habitability of Mars, an essential step in the search for past or present life on Mars, with investigations in Gale Crater.

----------

So, they've either found some sort of evidence regarding organic compounds on Mars, which wouldn't be all that interesting, much less earthshaking, since those can be formed through non-biological means, or they've found...something else? Something that might link organic compounds to a biological processes, either past or present?

Dammit NASA scientists! Aren't there any among your number who are familiar with the "anonymous leaking of classified information" tradition? Spend a little more time in Washington, for crying out loud.

Let's put the human expectations on a scale

Disney Big: John Carter's Bones!
Super Big: life on another planet - large enough to see
-Earthshaking (move it down one if you're feeling generous)-
Big: life on another planet- bacteria or other small organism
Not as big: evidence of past small organisms on Mars
-Where I expect it to be: either the one above or below this-
Yawn: Organic compounds on Mars
Duh: water was pretty much already known
