Martins Maulers, A 2013 Fantasy Baseball Draft Diary
Decided to bite the bullet and jump into Fantasy Baseball even earlier this year. I did a similar dynasty with my team last year and figured it'd be fun to keep track of again, and for anyone so inclined to follow along.
5x5, Slow draft (8 hours to pick), 50 rounds, no in season moves. Last year I did this as more of a learning tool to prepare me for other drafts, I'm sure the learning aspect will still be there but I'm a bit more focused on actually winning the league this season. I'm the first team in the league so it likely wont fill up tonight but I should be looking at a Saturday start. |

teee heee. In the LABR Mixed Mock Draft Mauer went in the 3rd and Morneau went in the 11th. I probably wont be targeting a Catcher that early.

Damn, league has already filled 9/15 spots. If we get 15 by the end of the night we'll be starting tomorrow instead of Saturday. My juices are already flowing.

Woo Hoo, league filled up in just a couple of hours. I will be starting my first draft of the year tomorrow at 5pm. Nice.

I've got the 3rd overall pick which leaves me with one of the big 3. I could also go outside the box big time and grab one of the elite starting pitchers. Kemp is also a possibility. I'm probably over thinking it already.

Draft is about to start and I'm already so nervous I might piddle myself. I'm not gonna overthink it though, whichever one of the big 3 falls to me I'm gonna take. I'd love it to be Miggy though.

Would really love Trout to go 2nd. If Miggy goes second I'm probably gonna do something stupid. I said it last year and I'll say it again, I always overanalyze the worst case scenario and I'm a little worried about taking Trout so high given his slight 2nd half downswing last year and his mass gain.

No real surprises yet. Goldschmidt went early in the 2nd in the LABR but still hasn't been taken here yet and I'm not surprised.

They both were and I decided to go with Heyward. Surprised Headley went so early, especially that far ahead of Ramirez. Goldschmidt finally went. Lee, Greinke, Zobrist, Craig and Holiday all went in the LABR 3rd round and got passed over here in favor of Butler, Ramirez, Zimmerman, Cain and Headley. |

6 spots left till it gets back to me in the 4th round. Gio, Greinke, Wainright, Weaver and Darvish are all out there, as is Mauer. My best scenario right now is that a couple of those guys AND Mauer are still available when it gets down to me so I can take Mauer and grab one of those guys on the way back in the 5th.

I was ecstatic when Gio & Mauer were there at #3 and I decided to sweat it out over Mauer and grab Gio while I could. Mauer went with the first pick in Round 5 so bleh. |

Looking back I'd have preferred Darvish & Mauer over Gio & Altuve, but who knows if Darvish would have been here when it got back to me. Anyhoo, no crying over spilled milk. If Altuve hits .290 with 30+ steals I'll be happy here. Some reaches starting to occur now as Sale (LABR 7th), Medlen (LABR 8th) and Papelbon (LABR 9th) are all snatched in the 5th round here. Andrus (LABR 4th) is still out there as well as Santana, Dickey, Sandoval, Martinez, Gordon, Jennings, Choo and Sabathia, who all went in the 5th in the LABR. |

My dilema now is that I want to grab Salvador Perez but I also do not, repeat, do not, want to let Pedro Alvarez slip through my fingers. I want him on my team like a fat kid wants cake. Like I want cake. He went in the middle of the 10th round in the LABR and I'm thinking I can grab him here at the end of round 8 but that long wait is gonna be murder on my nerves. |

Bit the bullet and grabbed Sal Perez early in the 7th. Will now wait on Alvarez. I do have Miggy already and none of the big bombing, 2nd tier 1B have been snatched up yet, so if worse comes to worse I think I can still find corner power in the 8th round.

Nearing the end of round 7 right now. Glad it's a slow draft as I've had time to think about and it would be sort of reaching to grab Alvarez if there are better options out there. If it was a regular draft I'd probably still be all over him. Right now I've got my fingers crossed that Trumbo & LaRoche somehow make it back down to me.

Big run on 1B in the 8th round. Rizzo, Hosmer, Konerko, Davis all swiped up which is fine with me. Would really love Trumbo to fall here as I'd prefer his OF/1B option.

So effing miffed I missed out on Trumbo here. To make it worse, we waited all day, about 7 hours on one guy then when I'm ready to grab Trumbo he's swiped up right before my pick. I was happy with LaRoche though, considering I would have taken him before any of the other 1B that went except for Trumbo. |

As the 9th round started I was ready to jump on Asdrubal Cabrera to fill out my SS spot. Of course he was picked right before me coming back around. I thought and thought and thought and really contemplated Alcides Escobar to give me a very good, speed oriented MI with him and Altuve. In the end I broke down and grabbed Alvarez whom I didn't think would be there when it got back around to me.

The plan watching the draft come back down was to go Willingham/Escobar. When it got to me though I just.....I dunno, I talked myself into Kennedy. Firstly he should have been gone before this, secondly I think he's more likely to be closer to 2011 than 2012 given his peripherals. I just got sucked in to having all those K's. Willingham went with the next pick naturally. This was also the round we started to see a run on closers. My theory last year, and it worked well, was wait till everyone has two and grab who's left and bolster that with setup men on teams likely to replace or trade their closers. I'm in no rush. |

Coming back down to me I clearly need to add a little more speed. A few players are on my radar. Carlos Ruiz is still out there, 25 game suspension or not he's worth taking at this late point. Been debating Evereth Cabrera all night. Can he hit enough to not drain my Avg? Carlos Quentin is another guy I'm trying to talk myself into. Still need pitching, starters and reliever. This is the first round where I'm not real sure about what I want to do.

Round 26
Team #15- SP Brett Myers Team #14- SP Drew Smyly Team #13- OF Lucas Duda Team #12- SP Jeff Niemann Team #11- OF Jeff Francoeur Team #10- OF Franklin Guitierrez Team #09- SP Trevor Bauer Team #08- OF Gregor Blanco Team #07- SS Dee Gordon Team #06- 2B Eric Young Jr. Team #05- SP Miguel Gonzalez Team #04- RP Felix Doubront Team #03- SP Vance Worley Team #02- SP Brandon Beachy Team #01- SP Ivan Nova Don't know if I was surprised but seeing Gordon and Young both go here kind of cheesed me off cause I was wanting to add some backup speed at IF. As it was though I was happy with Worley here. Assuming his elbow is ok, he should be more than decent enough to plug in if needed. Round 27 Team #01- 2B Logan Forsythe Team #02- 3B Alex Rodriguez Team #03- SP Cory Luebke Team #04- SP Dan Straily Team #05- C Nick Hundley Team #06- SP Ubaldo Jiminez Team #07- RP David Hernandez Team #08- OF David DeJesus Team #09- C Mike Zunino Team #10- OF Nate McClouth Team #11- 1B Mike Olt Team #12- 1B Matt Adams Team #13- 3B Alberto Callespo Team #14- SP Ted Lilly Team #15- SP Gavin Floyd Added more pitching depth here with a lot of upside and a little risk. If Luebke is in form by mid season this is a steal. And it seems as if he may be back sooner rather than later. |

Round 29 Team #01- SS Mike Aviles Team #02- SP Scott Kazmir Team #03- RP Luke Gregerson Team #04- SP Edinson Volquez Team #05- SS Pete Kozma Team #06- SP Jeremy Guthrie Team #07- 1B Brett Wallace Team #08- 2B Daniel Descalso Team #09- OF Jose Tabata Team #10- SS Cliff Pennington Team #11- 3B Nolan Arenado Team #12- RP Robbie Ross Team #13- SS Rueben Tejada Team #14- RP Wilton Lopez Team #15- 1B Carlos Pena Starting my save hawking strategy by grabbing Gregerson here. Of course if anything happens to Street they'll probably go back to Thayer. I was hoping Tabata would get back to me. |

It's not like there isn't a ton of closer turnover every year. Maybe he gets healthy and gets a job. Billingsley is just too good to not be starting for someone this year. And if it happens to be for the Dodgers, it's an amazing steal for the 32nd round. Now whoever starts at 2nd for the A's will be on my team. If that's good or not, who can say. And Schumaker gives me two Dodger backup outfielders, not that I'd wish injury on anyone. Not that I'd wish injury on Matt Kemp. |

That and the Marlins are old/young and awful, maybe he sneaks in another 300+ AB's. |
