Maricopa Reliever Named RL #1 Pitcher
Sunday, May 1st, 2011: Juan Reynoso has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in April and stole away with the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award.

The Rattlers bullpen ace collected 7 saves and 18 strikeouts in 16 innings, holding the opposition to a .135 average and posting a 0.56 ERA and a 1-0 record.

CL Selects McAtee April's #1 Pitcher
Sunday, May 1st, 2011: Over the past month Chris McAtee has turned quite a few heads. He's young, talented and able to pitch with the established arms in the Continental League. He proved all that and now he's been named April's Pitcher of the Month.

The rookie for the Stafford Terriers posted 5-0 mark and a 1.36 ERA. In 5 starts he tossed 33 innings, permitted 26 hits and fanned 21 batters.

Spring Shortstop RL's Best Batter in April
Sunday, May 1st, 2011: There's nothing like putting up good, solid numbers in the last year of your contract. Today Mike Livengood helped his contract negotiations by nabbing April's Republic League Batter of the Month honors.

The Spring shortstop put together a .411 batting average with 3 home runs, 20 RBIs and 22 runs scored.

Someone will surely be opening up the vault this offseason if Livengood continues at this brisk pace.

Huerta Crowned Batter of the Month in April
Sunday, May 1st, 2011: On the heels of a very productive April, Luis Huerta received Continental League Batter of the Month recognition today.

The battle-tested right fielder hit .446 for the St Louis Hops and racked up 8 home runs, 28 RBIs and 21 runs scored.

Lloyd Gets 300th Save, Shuts Down Banana Sluggers 13-11
Saturday, May 21st, 2011: It clearly was a special game at Banana Sluggers Ballpark for Washington Freedom pitcher Tim Lloyd as his family and friends watched from the stands as he closed out career save number 300. The 33-year-old reliever pitched 2 innings for his milestone save, giving up 1 run and 1 hit in a 13-11 victory over the Havana Banana Sluggers. "This couldn't have happened to a better guy," the Freedom manager said after the game. "You could see it in the way the crowd reacted today. It's hard not to be a fan of Tim."

Lifetime Lloyd has a 78-66 won-lost record and a 2.62 ERA with 300 saves. He has made 807 games, logged 995 innings and fanned 1063 batters.

Wright Wallops #300
Saturday, May 21st, 2011: It was a historic day for Cumberland's fine center fielder John Wright. He slammed home run number 300 in the Defenders 3-2 loss to the Virginia Beach Surf at Cumberland Stadium.

He told reporters after the game, that he was disappointed in losing the game. "It's great to get that many homers, but I don't play for homers -- I play to win. That's the name of the game."

In his milestone-making game Wright went 2 for 3, scored 1 run and collected 1 RBI. That home run put him in a select group of ballplayers.

His all-time numbers show Wright is carrying a .225 career batting average with 300 home runs and 909 RBIs.

RL Pick for Top Pitcher in May is Real
Wednesday, June 1st, 2011: Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Jean Real still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in May. The 28-year-old starter for Maricopa was named Republic League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 5 wins and no losses with 39 strikeouts in his 6 starts, putting up a fine 1.83 ERA in 44.1 innings of work.

This season Real has registered 8 wins and no losses in 10 starts with a 2.33 ERA.

CL's Best Starter is Alou
Wednesday, June 1st, 2011: As Wilson Alou hoisted up the Continental League Pitcher of the Month trophy for May, rumors have already begun to swirl about whether he will leave Balzac once his contract is up at the end of the season.

Alou put pressure on the Ticklers to keep him around by posting a 5-0 record and an ERA of 2.50 over 39.2 innings last month. He also rolled up 25 strikeouts, increasing his value both to Balzac and to every other team in the league.

On the season Alou has compiled a 6-2 mark with a 3.39 ERA in 11 starts. In pitching 71.2 innings he has 43 strikeouts and 38 walks while limiting the opposition to a .236 batting average.

Cumberland's Finley Acclaimed Best RL Hitter
Wednesday, June 1st, 2011: The hard-hitting first baseman from Cumberland, Jack Finley, wielded a big bat in May and was hailed as the Republic League Batter of the Month.

He hit a healthy .322 with 8 home runs, 30 RBIs and 27 runs scored.

This season Finley is batting .314 with 13 home runs.

Continental League Selects May's Best Batter

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011: José González battered Continental League pitchers all May and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around FOOL-X long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 34-year-old González told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 28 games, González hit .355 with 10 home runs, 27 RBIs and scored 24 runs.

In 54 games this season González is batting .290 with 61 hits and 14 home runs. He has scored 39 runs and driven in 44.

Coleman Receives May Rookie Award
Wednesday, June 1st, 2011: A rookie, Eddie Coleman is turning heads around the Republic League, especially since he just netted May's Rookie of the Month trophy.

The New York left fielder batted .355 last month and collected 38 hits, 5 home runs, 18 RBIs and 19 runs scored.

This could be the first of many such awards if he continues this torrid hitting, but he's definitely put himself in a good position to claim the Rookie of the Year Award later this year.

This year Coleman has hit at a .313 clip with 60 hits, 8 home runs, 37 RBIs and 34 runs scored.

Continental League Names Rookie of Month

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011: Ronald Fernández is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Continental League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In May the Washington hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .352 average with 25 hits, no home runs and 14 RBIs.

In 42 games this season Fernández has batted at a .313 pace with 42 hits and no home runs.

Mausinha Tosses Shutout Against Surf
Wednesday, June 8th, 2011: Spring starter Antão Mausinha really did a number on the Surf today, shutting them out 5-0 on 2 hits in a complete game victory. He issued 2 walks and had 6 strikeouts.

In his postgame comments, the Virginia Beach manager said, "We didn't have good at-bats. I don't make excuses, but when we were playing the game, our energy didn't show. That comes from either extremely good pitching or extremely lousy hitting... seeing as our team has a bunch of pretty good hitters, I have to tip my cap to Antão... he did an outstanding job today."

This year Mausinha has made 12 starts, thrown 61.1 innings, fanned 29 batters and walked 34. His won-lost record is 3-3 with a 5.87 ERA.

He went 2 for 4 in the game to reach the milestone.

CL Announces Outstanding Batter Award
Friday, July 1st, 2011: To survive in the bigs, you've got to be a scrapper like Bernt Pedersen. It never pays to take a day off from the batting cages or to shrug off the advice of the hitting coach. It all paid off today as Washington's left fielder pinned down the Continental League Batter of the Month trophy today.

He hit .340 in June collecting 6 home runs, 19 RBIs and 28 runs scored.

This year Pedersen has batted at a .296 pace with 92 hits, 18 home runs, 53 RBIs and scored 68 times.

Top Republic League Newcomer Named
Friday, July 1st, 2011: Youngster George Ryan emerged as the latest Republic League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Maricopa deserved the honor, batting .336 with 3 home runs and 18 RBI. Is the month of June a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Ryan enjoy the limelight.

To date this season Ryan is hitting .268 with 7 home runs.

CL Selects Rookie Star of the Month
Friday, July 1st, 2011: Carlito Balsemo was toddling around on his tricycle when some of the guys he's playing against were in their prime, but the 24-year-old first baseman definitely knows how to get to first, second or beyond. Today he was chosen June's Continental League Rookie of the Month for his remarkable month of hitting.

In 27 games Balsemo batted .277 for Stafford, slapping 31 hits in 112 at-bats with 1 home run, drove in 13 runs and scored 14 times.

Thus far this season in 78 games Balsemo is batting .232 with 2 home runs, 33 RBIs and 35 runs scored. He has 76 hits in 327 at-bats.

Bernard Booms 400th Homer
Monday, July 4th, 2011: New York's 3-2 victory over Maricopa was highlighted by Nick Bernard's 400th career home run. His teammates congratulated him at home plate after he circled the bases.

"I didn't see all of them out there," Bernard said with a chuckle, "until I rounded third base." He added sheepishly: "It was only a home run. It's not like I won us a World Series!"

In 3 at-bats the Legends third baseman collected 2 hits in his historic game, scored 2 runs, and had 2 runs batted in.

Looking at his all-time stats, Bernard has a lifetime .276 average with 1778 hits, 262 doubles, 25 triples, 400 home runs and 1301 RBIs. To date he has scored 1162 runs, walked 804 times and stolen 57 bases.

On a Roll: Thompson Hits for Cycle
Saturday, July 16th, 2011: "Some days everything falls in place and you have an almost perfect day."
Those were the comments from Balzac center fielder Lance Thompson today as his 4-5 day included the cycle, a baseball rarity.

"He sure was a wrecking ball today," said one teammate after the Ticklers tamed the Cardinals 13-8 at Chicago Stadium.

Lance Thompson flied out in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 2nd, hit an RBI triple in the 4th, hit a three-run home run off José Tapia in the 5th, walked in the 6th and doubled in the 9th.

So far this year Thompson is batting .312 with 2 home runs, 30 RBIs and 47 runs scored.

Ridin' High: Wood Hits for Cycle
Wednesday, July 27th, 2011: At Fog Bowl today Bob Wood led Balzac to a 5-3 victory over the Raindrops by hitting for the cycle, one of baseball's most difficult feats.

The Ticklers right fielder told reporters after the game, "Most people think the triple is the hardest one to get, but today, it was the homer... because the ball wasn't carrying. When I took it deep, I expected the ball to die on the warning track. Seeing the umpire give me the signal to circle the bases was sweet."

In addition to going 4-5, Wood chalked up 3 RBI and scored 1 run in an exceptional performance.

Bob Wood hit a two-run triple in the 1st, doubled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, hit a solo-shot off Mitch McDonald in the 8th and struck out in the 9th.

For the year Wood is batting .244 with 17 home runs.

Stout Launches Number 500
Wednesday, August 24th, 2011: A big sigh of relief erupted from John Stout after he hit his 500th career homer. The Spring catcher said, "I'm glad it's over...now I can go back to just playing baseball."

It was quite a day for Stout. He got his name in the league record books with 2 hits, 2 RBI, scored 3 runs and his team, the Spring Lions beat the Portland Axemen 19-3.

Stout knew it when he hit it. He raised his hands in the air, then ran the bases like a high school player, clapping and grinning.

He told reporters in the postgame interview, "I was acting goofy running the bases... but it was my 500th home run."

"It was great," his manager said. "He stood there and watched it...we all did. You just felt it was coming...you just had a sense he would hit it soon. He has been having a lot of good at-bats. It was great to get it out of the way."

In 1899 games Stout has a career .311 batting average and a .416 on-base percentage. He has hit 501 home runs with 1601 RBIs and 1369 runs scored.

Contreras' current streak is the first hitting streak over 30 games straight since Cleveland's Dave Jackson hit for 31 games straight back in 2005
