UFL, The birth of the New York Tartans

Mission Statment and Rules:

This league is run using the base 1970 rosters which were redrafted unto a 32 team league. This league is not NFL teams but rather team's I made up. I control the New York Tartans. I'm strictly a GM for the Tartans with control over personell decisions. I do all the drafting and signing and releasing of players. The CPU coaching staff picks the lineups and game plan.

I will start with the 1970 rosters created by the folks at Front Office Football Historical Project. I will import each draft class until exhausted. Which should bring me up to about 2005. From there on I will edit draft class to introduce people from the "draft database", see next post. The draft database is friends, users from this forum or others or basically anybody that wants to track their fictional career. When inputting the draft database players into the league, I will not edit anything other than first and last name. I will only edit players with a potential of 85 or higher. That way the draft database players have a chance to become big time legit superstars.

I will update this thread as each season is completed.

If you wish to join the database of draftees, please PM me with your full name and position.

I'll be keeping an eye on this. It's fascinating how different our universes look even after just one season.

I've done this a few times and every time I do it, players are always different, sometimes vastly.

Also, what are you doing about the expansion teams?

If he's using eric's 1970 rosters like I am in my Tampa Bay dynasty, then the expansion teams are already all in there with rookie street free agents and maybe one or two veterans on the rosters.

Can't do much about expansion, because as fas as I know you can't edit the league structure after the start of the league. All 32 teams started, so I believe some fictionary players are in the league. So this is not 100% accurate nor was that my plan anyhow.

1970 Season Review

The New York Tartans enjoyed a stellar start to their dynasty as did the United Football League. The UFL replaced the recently folded National Football League as the people choice in professional football. The UFL took on many of the former NFL players on its 32 teams.

The New York Tartans exceeded all expecations as they went a remarkable 15-1 in its first season. The Tartans were all about offense. With Terry Hanratty, Ross Montgomery and Mike Carter paving the way. Hanratty threw for nearly 4,000 yards and 26 touchdowns. Carter provided a incredible deep threat averaging over 17 yards a catch. Carter had 9 touchdowns and 1,346 yards. Montgomery, a All-Star selection, rushed for a UFL high 1,457 yards and a whopping 13 touchdowns.

Defensively the Tartans struggled. Injuries hampered the team's success. Linebackers William Lanier and Bill Butler recorded 150 and 130 total tackles respectively. Both Lanier and Butler were All-Star selections. Tony Plummer lead the defensive backfield with 110 total tackles and 8 of the team's 22 interceptions. The Tartans defense also recorded 44 sacks with Orlando Winslett and Dennis Wirgowksi adding a team high 6 1/2 sacks. Butler also recorded 6 sacks.

The Tartans crusied thru the playoffs with a 34-3 thrashing over the North Dakota Gators. Hanratty threw for 317 yardsin the rout. Montgomery lead then to a 34-22 victory over the Memphis Elphs with a 136 yard rushing effort. The USA Title game was a heart breaking 24-21 loss to the Michigan Bulldogs despite a 128 yard rushing effort by Montgomery.

1971 Season in Review

The New York Tartans enjoyed another trip to the playoffs despite a handful of crucial injuries. Although the end result wasn't as projected, it still must be considered a successful season.

Offensively the Tartans were lead by two time All-Star Runningback Ross Montgomery. Montgomery rushed for a team record 1,558 yards on a 4.7 average per carry with 7 touchdowns. For his efforts Montgomery was named the UFL's Offensive Player of the Year. Terry Hanratty missed a handful of games but still managed to throw for nearly 2,800 yards and 24 touchdowns. Billy Walik scored a team record 11 touchdowns, catching 68 passes for 1,225 yards. Mike Carter added 831 yards but missed the last 7 games of the season with a injury. Despite the injuries the Tartans enjoyed another fine season offensively, averaging nearly 400 yards of offense per game.

The defense also slightly improved for the Tartans. Paul Smith and Dennis Wirgowski combined for 20 of the team's 37 sacks to lead a much improved defensive line. Willie Lanier lead the linebacking corp with 144 total tackles with Bill Butler chipping in with 123 total tackles. The Tartans feature two of the UFL's best safties in Tony Plummer and Benny Johnson. Johnson was selected to the All-Star team as he recorded 138 total tackles and intercepted 3 passes. Plummer has recorded 15 interceptions over the last two seasons. The Tartans defense lead the UFL as they caused 34 turnovers.

The playoffs started with a solid 27-10 thrashing over the divisional rival New England Wildcats. Montgomery rushed for 134 yards in the rout. However Montgomery was ineffective in a lopsided 21-7 loss to the West Virginia Bison in the divisional round.

The Tartans played beyond expectations considering the amount of injuries to key starters they sustained during the season. Many subpar players stepped up and performed beyond expectations. This was a offensive focused team just like the 1970 version. They worked to improve the defense and they did improve slightly. Problem again was a lack of solid depth and it cost them in the end.

1972 Season in Review

The New York Tartans enjoyed their first championship season in just their third season. It was a season that exceeded all expectations. The offense flourished while the defense improved from one of the team's weaknesses into a dominate defense.

The Tartans were lead by USA Title Bowl MVP Terry Hanratty. 2 of the team's 3 losses came when Hanratty was injured. Hanratty set a team recorded as he threw for 31 touchdowns in 14 games. Hanratty added 3,552 yards. 3 time All-Star Ross Montgomery added another stellar season rushing for 1,468 yards and 10 touchdowns. Mike Carter missed half the season with a nagging injury dating back to 1971. Despite that fact he caught for 723 yards. Billy Walik lead the team with 966 receiving yards and Tight End Steve Zabel chipped in with 854 yards and 7 scores. The Tartans as a whole set a team record with a average of 394 yards of offense a game. The offense has been a huge reason for a franchise record of 37-10 and has been relentless for the past 3 seasons.

Defensively the Tartans had previously struggled and been a weak spot for previous Tartan teams. However the 1972 version was of a different breed alltogether. Boasting the number 1 ranked pass defense and lead the league in least points allowed. It was very suprising considering they had the lowest sack total (34) and interceptions (19) in franchise history. They played well as a team and fought against many key injuries. Players produced when called upon. Willie Lanier again lead the team in tackles with 127 while Bill Butler recorded 118. Safety Tony Plummer is one of the UFL's most underrated players and he has recorded 20 interceptions in 3 seasons despite never making a All-Star squad. Dennis Wirgowski, Paul Smith and Glenn Condren combined for 19 of the team 34 sacks to lead a much improved defensive line.

The combination of a devestating defense and a high powered offense made the Tartans nearly unbeatable. Hanratty lead the team with a incredible playoff performance despite not being 100% healthy for any playoff game. It was a amazing season for the Tartans and they topped it off with a world championship, a well deserved championship.

1973 Season in Review

For the second straight season the New York Tartans were the best team in football. Winning their 2nd world championship, 3rd conference title and 4th division title in 4 years. Their 15-1 record tied their franchise record. The Tartans played basically injury free all season and accomplished their objective by winning the USA Title game.

Offensively the team was lead by 4 time All-Star Running Back Ross Montgomery. Montgomery set team records with 1,655 rushing yards and a amazing 20 touchdowns. Montgomery also won his 2nd Offensive Player of the Year award and averaged 5.1 yards per carry. Terry Hanratty, who elected to come back to the team after flirting with free agency, set a team record with 3,942 yards and 31 touchdowns. Hanratty also won his 2nd straight USA Title Game MVP award. Mike Carter returned to his 1970 form and caught for over 1,300 yards and set a team record with 12 receiving touchdowns. The offense as a whole continued on previous years success with a high scoring offense that featured a incredible ground attack lead by the blocking of 3 time All-Star Guard Bob Kuechenberg.

Defensively the Tartans were ranked among the top 10 defenses in the league. Defensive End Dennis Wirgowski set a team record with 12.5 sacks and Paul Smith added 9 sacks. They created alot of pressure on quarterbacks and the end result was 27 forced turnovers. UFL all-time interception leader Tony Plummer intercepted 6 passes to lead the Tartans defensive backfield. The Tartans defense was lead by a pair of former All-Star linebackers in Bill Butler and Willie Lanier. Butler lead the team with 95 solo tackles and 124 total tackles and also added 4 sacks. Lanier lead the team with 129 total tackles. The defense again lead the league in the least points allowed as they did in 1972 and that helped the team repeat as world champions.

Montgomery's 196 rushing yards helped the Tartans roll over the New Hampshire Panthers 27-14 in the divisional round. Hanratty threw for 320 yards in a 27-17 laugher over the Maryland Ephs in the conference title round. Hanratty won the MVP award, completing 20 of 30 passes for 263 yards as the Tartans routed the Minnesota Auggies 38 to 17 to repeat as world champions.

1974 Season in Review

The New York Tartans can officially say they have a dynasty. Winning their 3rd straight USA Title Game and claiming their 4th conference and 5th division title in the first 5 years of both the league and the franchise. A dynamic offense, which has been the trademark of the franchise, again paced the team.

3 time USA Title Game MVP Terry Hanratty had another remarkable year leading the Tartans offense. Hanratty set a team record with over 4,250 yards passing and equaled another franchise mark by throwing for 31 touchdowns. Hanratty was named the Player of the Year and elected to his first ever All-Star game. Ross Montgomery, the current UFL career rushing leader, won his 3rd Offensive Player of the Year award and was elected to his 5th straight All-Star game. Montgomery rushed for 1,527 yards and 19 touchdowns. Veteran Mike Carter posted another fine season, breaking the team record with 13 receiving touchdowns while catching 80 balls for 1,210 yards. Billy Walik added 928 receiving yards. The Tartans averaged over 414 yards a game offensively as even with injuries appeared unstoppable with the big three (Hanratty, Montgomery and Carter).

The Tartans run defense was the best in franchise history allowing just about 90 yards a game. Tony Plummer lead a defense that intercepted 16 passes and recorded 30 sacks. Plummer had 5 interceptions himself and has 31 in his career. Plummer also recorded 91 total tackles. Benny Johnson, a former All-Star, recorded a team high 88 solo tackles and 125 total tackles. Paul Smith lead the team with 6.5 sacks with Glenn Condren and Clyde Swift each adding 5 sacks. The Tartans defense was hammered all season with injuries and relied on depth and consistent play to enjoy another successful season.

The Tartans 3 peat as World Champions is probally something that will never happen again. They are now faced with salary cap problems as the enter the 1975 season. I fully expect the team to be broken up. I really didn't expect a 1974 championship team, so you never really now. But I know the team is headed in a youth direction so I'd expect a semi normal season in '75.
