The Chris Simms era begins Sunday

After wondering aloud when Gruden would make the switch, it turns out it will be this Sunday.
Quote:
ESPN.com news services
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Bucs coach Jon Gruden informed Brad Johnson that Chris Simms will take over as the starting quarterback for the immediate future.

Simms was inactive Sunday against the Broncos behind Johnson and Brian Griese and there was some speculation that Gruden could go with Griese. After meeting with Johnson Monday, Gruden needed the night to think about whether or not to make a change.

Johnson was replaced by Simms a couple weeks ago after 15 plays. In four games, Johnson completed 63.1 percent of his passes for 647 yards and three touchdowns and three interceptions. His quarterback rating was 79.5, but the offense as a whole was going nowhere.

Simms gives the Bucs more mobility in the pocket, but it may be tough for him to turn around an offense in transition. He's completed 21 of 33 passes for 175 yards, a 5.3 yard per attempt average that more than a yard lower than Johnson's. He was sacked four times and doesn't have a touchdown pass.
-- ESPN.com's John Clayton

Thoughts? I can't see how it hurts them. I am personally a Simms believer, and think he can have a solid NFL career.

It's the right time.

Trade Johnson now if you can. Take a 7th rounder even or a scrub player.

What a weird day of rumors on that front. I have heard "definite" information that Johnson would start, then that Griese would start, then that Simms would start.

He should do OK next week unless the Saints hire Mike Stoops as their defensive coordinator.

To see how far Griese has fallen, I didn't even realize he was on the Bucs. He never gets mentioned usually in the QB situation in TB. I guess he is looking at the remainder of his career following the path of Rick Mirer.

Brad isn't going to be with the team next season so it makes sense to try Simms at some point to see what he's made of and give him some experience.

I'm a fan of Brads and I'm hating that the time has come but it's time for him to step aside. It's not that the Bucs problems are his fault because they're not for the most part. The team is just old, injury prone and plain out suck right now. Brad hasn't been able to ignite them and that's never been his strong point as a QB in any case.

Simms has looked good in preseason and he did indeed light a fire under the team when he went in vs Seattle although he made some critical rookie mistakes which prevented the team from winning. I'm just glad that they are going with Simms instead of Griese because going with Griese looks like they are dumping on Brad but this way it looks like they are preparing their qb of the future and I feel that at this point he gives the team just as much a chance to win. I hope it works out that way.

with the Bucs in for a disastrous season (I don't see how this team can even think about making the Playoffs this years), I'd agree it is the right time to put in Chris Simms.

Yeah, well I think Chris can probably match 1 touchdown every 2 games. The Bucs offense has been beyond hideous.

That's how I read this. I think given that they have other viable options, they should make a move. But, if priority #1 were still to win this year, I would think they'd give Griese a chance first. But, if they think they are not going to make the playoffs, finding out what Simms has is the right move.

Wonder if the Bears would be interested in Johnson. He could probably be had for a minimal cost and would be an upgrade over Quinn.

Regardless of what you think of Simms' skills, the guy is screwed this year. That offense is horrible.

Gene Deckerhoff has had plenty of experience making just such calls, seeing as though he calls FSU games and Chris Rix has been the starter for the past 3 years...

I hope he leads the Bucs to an 11-5 season, then the Bucs draft Jeff Hostetler's son with their 1st round pick.

huck, give it up. chris is horrible. you saw it. when he left texas, the only change was qb, and we went on to roll everyone offensively, and win the national championship. i mean, for chance mock to not get yanked and go 13-0 was amazing, and should show everyone jsut how bad chris simms was. now mock is running the same offense and is the frontrunner for the heisman. everything was simms' fault. so quit making yourself look stupid, stupid

i forgot to mention that chance went 24-25 for 400 yards against ou, something chris could never dream of doing. in fact, chris never finished within 10 points of ou, and never lead at the half, much less blowing them out like mock did. you are so dumb huckleberry

Who is Chance Mock?

If there is anything in this world we agree on IMTG, it is we both feel the coaching staff at UT is the culprit for all the problems.

I want to make a few things clear here, now that we summoned you. I don't wish death on any human that I can think of, and my comment about him being hit by a soccer moms minivan was a joke. I am sorry you didn't get that, but if we want to bash each other with quoting comments that are off color or ill timed, then I have about a thousand to use against you every time you write a post.

As you and I both attended UT, then we have more in common, we both want victory. I have watched in complete horror the losses to OU the past years. Every year walking from the parking lot in disgust. My personal opinion still remains. If Applewhite would have started one of those games he set on the sideline, we would have won. I just don't think Simms was ready when he took the QB job.

My anger at him is more about getting you and Huck fired up. (Very easy to do, like shooting fish in a barrel). But, I have seen nothing from him to think he is as great as everyone proclaims. And every year since he was a freshman, all I heard was how GREAT he was going to be. He was already proclaimed king before ever throwing a pass. Year after year goes by, and the frenzy to proclaim this guy something he was not never ceased. I actually feel very sorry for him, the expectations of Texas fans are brutal, it is not his fault he wasn't the next Elway.

But now I see the same thing happening again. He is going to be so great, the Simms era??? ERA??? I can see him at 38 years old, and someone on this board saying, "Yeah, but his QB rating climbed to a career best 72, he is really coming on strong, just wait till next year."

you should have just said that. then you can playfully bash him all you want. i stopped being fired up at you months ago, now i just think you're a dolt not worth the time it takes to get riled up

we agree on the coaches, thats nice, but i'll never agree that major would have done better. he didn't do better in '00. chris should have won in '02, before davis went all same-ole-shit on us

Pro Bowl? How about showing something against a regular-season defense besides one part of one game.

Byron Leftwich whom you said sucked will make a Pro Bowl long before Chris Simms will.

HFP, there's a flaw in that logic. In order to unlearn, you first have to learn. This IS Austin we are talking about.

Chris Simms at quarterback means that the Bucs are angling for the #1 pick in next year's draft.

Better to find out if the guy can play in the NFL now. Otherwise we would have to wait until next year and possibly waste another year.

I can assure you that as a QB being groomed by the Buccaneers there is a 95% chance the dude will flat out suck until he goes somewhere else, where all of a sudden he starts winning Super Bowls.

I don't know how good Simms would have been otherwise, but I imagine Gruden will turn him into a decent player.

I didn't realize chance mock was pronounced "Kyle Orton".

Well at least we know his career as a starter couldn't have had a cheesier start:

re: leftwich, i certyainly may have said he was overrated. i mean the guy was sacked maybe once in his career at marshall, and that was because he tripped. it was impossible to tell how good he was. but i certainly didnt say he sucked
