Detroit Lions: Return of the Pride

Going to attempt to start a serious SP career using the Detroit Lions. Need somewhere to write my thoughts as I work on my game planning and drafting skills. I'll be mirroring Ben E Lou's writing style from his San Diego Chargers dynasty. Seems very simple and too the point.

STARTUP
  • Random player file with complete draft.
  • Starting at the beginning of the 2010 season with the Detroit Lions.
SETTINGS
  • Injuries=100.
  • Cap Range: 99 to 99.
HOUSE RULES
  • None at this time.

Initial Roster Breakdown

Code:
Player # Pos Start Exp Current Estimate Future Estimate Cntrct Jamison, Lorenzo 12 QB QB 1 18 55 4 yrs Langton, Bart 5 QB 1 12 50 3 yrs Fuller, Barry 4 QB 1 6 41 2 yrs

Lorenzo Jamison will begin the season as our starter. He is very raw but has some decent looking bars that could make him a serviceable starter once he develops. Bart Langton doesn't have bars to back up his rating but will be our backup for the time being. Barry Fuller is nothing more than a roster filler. We will look for someone to replace him, preferably someone that is a mentor and has some kick holding ability.

Code:
Hutchins, Kent 31 RB RB 2 57 70 1 yr. McKnight, Malcolm 41 RB 1 16 41 2 yrs Freeman, Matthew 32 RB 1 19 43 1 yr. Emerson, Carlos 23 RB 1 29 50 2 yrs Rice, Derrick 48 FB FB 8 54 59 2 yrs Foreman, Marcus 49 FB 1 17 44 2 yrs
Very excited to have a running back of Kent Hutchins caliber on our roster. We will play a fairly heavy smash mouth offense and Hutchins should shine as our starter. His endurance is a concern, only topping out at 45. Carlos Emerson looks to be his backup and should be good for 500-600 yds. Malcolm McKnight has got great potential as a kickoff returner and special teams ace. Matthew Freeman is no more than a filler. Veteran Derrick Rice will start at fullback and should do a fine job opening holes for Hutchins. Marcus Foreman is unpolished but could develop into a solid backup FB.

Code:
Godfrey, Ed 88 TE TE 4 59 61 3 yrs Beckles, Leslie 80 TE 2 20 44 2 yrs Vender, Paul 85 TE 1 16 47 2 yrs Willis, T.J. 87 FL FL 12 54 54 2 yrs Wright, Howie 84 FL 3 26 49 3 yrs Gordon, Wes 89 SE SE 6 55 55 1 yr. Uhl, Rob 81 SE 4 29 38 2 yrs Walton, O.J. 82 SE 2 14 37 1 yr.

T.J. Willis and Wes Gordon will be our starting wideouts. Willis is more of a big-play threat and doesn't really fit our short pass smashmouth offense so it will be interesting to see how he fits into the offense. Gordon is a good at gaining yardage after the catch and should flourish in our offense. Howie Wright and Rob Uhl both project to be decent backups, while O.J. Walton is no more than a filler and probably won't make the team. Ed Godfrey will start at TE and has very good abilities. But like Willis, he is more of a big-play threat. Both Leslie Beckles and Paul Vender look to be good backups and both will likely make the team.

Code:
Randle, Tony 51 C 1 23 42 2 yrs Gordon, Roderick 53 C C 1 17 47 3 yrs Quick, Albert 70 LG LG 1 14 57 2 yrs Copeland, Lionel 62 LG 1 8 27 2 yrs Hodgson, Donnie 79 LG RG 1 13 53 2 yrs Wertlieb, Floyd 61 LG 1 13 42 2 yrs Debussy, Ted 76 LT LT 3 25 48 3 yrs Newton, Donnell 65 LT 1 21 39 2 yrs Kelley, Wesley 63 LT 1 11 46 1 yr. Schultz, Jimmy 69 RT RT 1 12 34 1 yr.

Not particularly excited about our offensive line. There is only one veteran in the whole group and none of them look that promising. It will be an open competition during preseason to decide playing time. This is an area we will look to upgrade for sure next offseason.

Code:
Federspiel, George 8 P 1 20 43 1 yr. Shockey, Charlie 13 K 1 11 48 2 yrs
I'm a strong believer in needing good special team players. They can really make the difference in this game. Too bad neither of these guys fits that belief. We will be looking for replacements soon!

Code:
Leung, D.J. 78 LDE LDE 1 36 67 4 yrs Hopper, Clifton 71 RDE RDE 2 24 53 1 yr. Forbes, Skip 75 RDE 1 12 44 1 yr. Finley, Moe 74 RDE 1 11 35 2 yrs Guzy, Steven 91 LDT LDT 9 71 71 3 yrs McInerney, Ike 95 LDT 1 15 32 2 yrs Edmonds, Paul 77 LDT 1 18 46 1 yr. McKnight, Cedric 98 RDT RDT 1 19 57 3 yrs
Our plan is to play a 3-4 defense and figure out the pieces to make it successful. D.J. Leung will start at LDE and should give us a strong pass rush presence from that side. Needs to develop some but once he does he should be a solid run stopper and pass rusher for us. Clifton Hopper isn't quite the pass rusher and will be better suited to man the RDE spot. Just like Leung, he needs time to develop. Skip Forbes should be good enough to backup both end positions, while Moe Finley is nothing more than filler. Steven Guzy will be our starting nose tackle. He doesn't have the size you typically see from a NT but he will get his shot. Cedric McKnight will be his backup and has nice size but needs time to develop. Paul Edmonds will probably be kept around as an emergency NT3 but Ike McInerney will be given his walking papers.

Code:
Urbina, T.J. 97 SILB MLB 8 80 82 5 yrs Knight, Andre 93 SILB 1 23 53 1 yr. Rasmuson, Carl 50 MLB 1 10 42 1 yr. Hammond, Reuben 90 SLB SLB 4 44 69 2 yrs Delgado, O.J. 57 SLB 2 13 34 1 yr. Ross, Bo 92 SLB 1 11 43 2 yrs Twitty, Phillip 96 SLB WLB 1 10 52 1 yr.
Reuben Hammond and T.J. Urbina are two of our four starters, no doubt. Urbina will start at SILB and is going to be a force in both run defense and pass defense. Too bad he is entering his 8th season. Hammond is young and needs a little more time to develop but will start at SLB and should be a fierce pass rusher from that side. After that things get complicated with five youngsters battling for two starting spots. O.J. Delgado is better suited as a backup. His only asset is having good potential run defense, as does Bo Ross. Carl Rasmuson doesn't bring a lot to the table and I'm not sure he fits this team. Phillip Twitty and Andre Knight look to have the best chance at landing the WILB and WLB spots.

Code:
Eddins, Cornell 38 LCB RCB 4 65 72 3 yrs Figures, Randal 28 LCB LCB 3 57 95 2 yrs Sterne, Everett 39 LCB 1 20 50 3 yrs Reese, Casey 26 RCB 1 11 43 3 yrs Stephenson, Leo 25 RCB 1 17 39 1 yr. Bruce, Grant 27 SS SS 1 17 35 1 yr. Mackey, Brant 35 SS 1 11 45 3 yrs Willis, Harvey 36 FS 1 8 40 1 yr. Wickliff, Johnnie 29 FS FS 1 18 52 1 yr.

We are not particularly excited about any of the safeties currently on our roster. Someone will start, someone will backup but once other teams make their cuts we will be looking for some serviceable guys to pickup until we can rebuild that position group next offseason. Cornerback is a different story though. Randal Figures and Cornell Eddins are going to anchor our secondary for a long time. Both are very good and can shutdown an opposing teams WRs. Everett Sterne is undeveloped but is a great ball hawk. Sterne will be our nickel corner.
