The XL League

With 40 Super Bowl winnners now on record, I've decided to do an all-time league that features all of them using my Quick Play Football utility. I would sincerely love to do this sort of thing in "Second and Ten", but I don't have the cash laying around for that, so freebie-no-detail it is for now. If I get SaT at some later date, I may re-do this, but for now, we'll do it this way. (If anyone owning SaT wants to pitch in and do some games, let me know. I'll live vicariously through your results. )

The league will be set up more like a World Cup, actually. There will be eight groups of five (A-H). Each team plays four games against everyone in its own group, no cross-group play. This makes 16 games over 20 rounds with everyone getting a bye out every five games. The top two teams from each group will advance to the playoffs.

The draw will not be random. Instead, it's a "count-off" arrangement. That is, 1966 Green Bay is in Group A, 1967 Green Bay is in Group B, 1968 Jets are in Group C, and so forth until 2005 Pittsburgh is in Group H. The playoffs will be structured such that teams from back-to-back years cannot meet until the championship game. I want the teams to matchup from different eras as much as possible. AMENDED: Also, all playoff games after the first round are to be held at neutral sites to be determined. The first round games will all be played at the home of each of the group winners.

If you followed the all-time tournament I did a couple of years ago, you'll recall one of the sticky issues was the issue of "normalization" across eras. I've decided to abolish that for this contest. All teams are zeroed out and equal on that regard. This will be a pound-for-pound fight to see who is best.

Rules and such:
*2-point conversion is allowed
*During group phase, games will play like regular season NFL games (one sudden death OT)
*Tie-breakers are as follows:
--Head-to-head
--PD HtH
--HtH vs 1st-5th in group
--PD vs 1st-5th in group
--PD all games
*If more than two teams tie, tie-breakers will step until at least one team is dropped, at which point, the tie-breaker moves back to HtH for remaining teams
*If tiebreakers for whatever reason cannot resolve a playoff spot, then a random-draw playoff will be done among all surviving teams to determine who qualifies

With all the setup out of the way, here is how each group is set up:

Group A
Green Bay Packers 1966
Pittsburgh Steelers 1974
Washington Redskins 1982
New York Giants 1990
Denver Broncos 1998

Group B
Green Bay Packers 1967
Pittsburgh Steelers 1975
Los Angeles Raiders 1983
Washington Redskins 1991
St. Louis Rams 1999

New England Patriots 2001

Group E
Baltimore Colts 1970
Pittsburgh Steelers 1978
New York Giants 1986
San Francisco 49ers 1994
Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2002

Group F
Dallas Cowboys 1971
Pittsburgh Steelers 1979
Washington Redskins 1987
Dallas Cowboys 1995
New England Patriots 2003

Group G
Miami Dolphins 1972
Oakland Raiders 1980
San Francisco 49ers 1988
Green Bay Packers 1996
New England Patriots 2004

Group H
Miami Dolphins 1973
San Francisco 49ers 1981
San Francisco 49ers 1989
Denver Broncos 1997
Pittsburgh Steelers 2005

I'll need to spend a little bit of time setting up the schedule and then running the games, but that won't take long. I'm hoping to have this contest played out in fairly short order.

Damn it! The Dolphins teams aren't doing as well as they should be, especially the '73 team, which was actually even better than the '72 one

You are right that the Dolphins have underperformed a bit. The 1973 been favored to win three times and lost twice. However, they pulled the upset against the 49ers last game, so maybe it's evening out for them.

By the looks of things, they also seem to have drawn the most rugged group of the eight so far with 4 of 5 teams at .500 or better, which no other group can even come close to claiming. Only Group D and Group F have three teams at or above .500 and only Group E has all five teams with an average point differential in single digits on either side of zero like Group H does.

Still, both Dolphin teams have 12 games left to get the ship righted and try to get to the top two spots in their respective groups, so it's not time to hit the Panic Button yet.

NOTE: the standings are now sorted by tiebreaker rules, which means head-to-head in most cases. In the case of the three-way tie in group H, all three were 1-1 HtH, so HtH PD was used to put 73 Miami in 2nd place and since 89 San Fran and 81 San Fran were still tied, the tiebreaker goes to step one again, HtH between 89 and 81, which 89 won to put them in 3rd place.

Schedule for Week 6

Big Games
D: 1977 Cowboys (4-0) at 1985 Bears (3-1)
*A big tilt in the Windy City as the Bears look to avenge their only loss so far and tie up the division lead in the process. Cowboys can move two up and essentially control any tiebreaker with the Bears at the end of the season with a win.

E: 1978 Steelers (3-1) at 1986 Giants (2-2)
*Important game for both clubs with the Bucs off for the week. Giants win, they tie up the Steelers for 2nd place in the group. Steelers win, they move into 1st while bumping the Giants further behind the Bucs.

F: 1979 Steelers (2-2) at 1987 Redskins (3-1)
*Similar to the Steelers-Giants tilt above. Steelers need to win to keep in the thick of things in the group, while a Redskin win puts them two up on the Steelers and one-half game behind idle New England.

G: 1972 Dolphins (2-2) at 1996 Packers (2-2)
*With the Patriots unbeaten and idle this week, the winner here can maintain a more realistic chance of catching the group leaders. The loser, especially if it's the Packers, will be digging a bit of a hole to get into the top two.

H: 1973 Dolphins (2-2) at 1997 Broncos (3-1)
*In the chaos of group H, the Broncos can get some separation if they can beat the Dolphins at home. A win guarantees sole possession of first for another week and also sends the Dolphins two back. Conversely for the Dolphins, a win ties them up with the Broncos and the winner of the 49ers franchise battle in a three-way mess at the top.

H: 1981 49ers (2-2) at 1989 49ers (2-2)
*The 1981 Niners cannot afford a loss here because they would be in a 2-0 hole to the 1989 team and, if Denver wins, fall two behind the Broncos. The 1989 team has a little more room for error, but the compactness of the standings means a win can potentially tie them for first while a loss can drop them all the way to fourth.

Rest of the games
A: 1966 Packers (4-0) at 1990 Giants (1-3)
A: 1974 Steelers (2-2) at 1982 Redskins (1-3)
B: 1967 Packers (1-3) at 1991 Redskins (4-0)
B: 1975 Steelers (2-2) at 1983 Raiders (1-3)
C: 1968 Jets (1-3) at 1992 Cowboys (2-2)
C: 1976 Raiders (1-3) at 1984 49ers (4-0)
D: 1969 Chiefs (1-3) at 1993 Cowboys (2-2)
E: 1970 Colts (1-3) at 1994 49ers (1-3)
F: 1971 Cowboys (1-3) at 1995 Cowboys (0-4)
G: 1980 Raiders (1-3) at 1988 49ers (1-3)

Off: 1998 Broncos, 1999 Rams, 2000 Ravens, 2001 Patriots, 2002 Buccaneers, 2003 Patriots, 2004 Patriots, 2005 Steelers

Schedule for Week 7

Big Games
C: 2000 Ravens (2-2) at 1984 49ers (5-0)
*Ravens come off the bye and have to go to San Francisco and face the unbeaten 49ers on their turf. For the Ravens, it's a must-win if they want to stay up in the group race. For the 49ers, a win will begin to turn the race into a runaway.

F: 2003 Patriots (4-0) at 1987 Redskins (3-2)
*Patriots also come off a bye and must travel to RFK to battle the second-place Redskins. A win by the 'Skins will really tighten up the race for first, but a Patriot win will spread out the field a little bit, depending on the outcome of Pittsburgh's game with 1971 Dallas.

Schedule for Week 8

Big Game
B: 1975 Steelers (4-2) at 1991 Redskins (5-0)
*A very important game in the group race as a Steeler loss will do significant damage to their chances of catching the Redskins, while a Steeler win will tighten the race up a lot.

G: 1972 Dolphins (3-3) at 2004 Patriots (5-0)
*The Dolphins have struggled at times this year. The Patriots haven't. If the Dolphins are to have any chance at catching the Patriots, they have to go into Foxboro and take this game. Losing here means they'll be below .500 again and three-and-a-half games behind the Patriots. For the Patriots, a win will keep them a few steps ahead of the fast-rising Packers, who are expected to beat the Raiders.

Week 9 Schedule

Big Games
A: 1982 Redskins (3-3) at 1966 Packers (7-0)
*If the Redskins are to have any chance at all of reeling in the Packers, they have to go into Lambeau and do it. A Packer win guarantees at least a four-game lead by the midseason mark and effectively reduces Group A to a battle for second place.
*Prior meeting: Green Bay 24-6 at Washington

B: 1999 Rams (4-2) at 1991 Redskins (6-0)
*Another must-win for a second place team on the road. If the Rams win, they cut the Redskins' lead to one game, but a loss expands it to three games, plus the Redskins will have guaranteed at least a split in the head-to-head tiebreaker.
*Prior meeting: Washington 36-24 at St. Louis

G: 2004 Patriots (6-0) at 1996 Packers (4-2)
*The Packers also fall into the same 2nd-place-chasing-1st-place category, but at least they're at home for their battle with the Patriots. A similar story as the Rams-Redskins game, as a win by Green Bay reduces the Patriots to a one-game lead, while a loss gives them a three-game lead and at least a head-to-head split.
*Prior meeting: New England 27-24 at New England

Rest of the games
A: 1998 Broncos (2-4) at 1990 Giants (2-4)
B: 1983 Raiders (1-5) at 1967 Packers (1-6)
C: 1984 49ers (6-0) at 1968 Jets (3-4)
C: 2000 Ravens (2-4) at 1992 Cowboys (4-2)
D: 1985 Bears (4-2) at 1969 Chiefs (3-4)
D: 2001 Patriots (1-5) at 1993 Cowboys (3-3)
E: 1986 Giants (3-3) at 1970 Colts (1-6)
E: 2002 Buccaneers (4-2) at 1994 49ers (2-4)
F: 1987 Redskins (3-3) at 1971 Cowboys (2-4-1)
F: 2003 Patriots (5-1) at 1995 Cowboys (1-4-1)
G: 1988 49ers (2-4) at 1972 Dolphins (3-4)
H: 1989 49ers (4-2) at 1973 Dolphins (3-4)
H: 2005 Steelers (2-4) at 1997 Broncos (5-1)

Off: 1974 Steelers, 1975 Steelers, 1976 Raiders, 1977 Cowboys, 1978 Steelers, 1979 Steelers, 1980 Raiders, 1981 49ers

Schedule for Week 10

Big Games (and there are a lot of them this week)
B: 1975 Steelers (4-3) at 1999 Rams (4-3)
*With the 'Skins taking on the lowly Raiders, this clearly becomes a battle for second place and perhaps a retention of whatever meager chance of catching Washington in the second half of the season.
*Prior meeting: Pittsburgh 27-24 at Pittsburgh

C: 1984 49ers (7-0) at 1992 Cowboys (5-2)
*The steady performance by Dallas has carried them back into the race in Group C, where they have a firm hold of second place. A win here, however, bumps them to within a game of the 49ers. A loss and it'll be a challenge to wrest the group lead away over the second half. Dallas will also be looking to avenge a humiliating 52-14 defeat from the last meeting
*Prior meeting: San Francisco 52-14 at San Francisco

D: 1985 Bears (5-2) at 1993 Cowboys (4-3)
*A big tilt in the Big D. With the 1977 Cowboys playing the hapless Patriots, this game may determine if Chicago remains with the Cowboys atop the group standings or whether the 1993 Cowboys can force at least a tie for second or perhaps even first place if the Patriots somehow pull the upset. Dallas needs the win more because they'd drop two back of both the 1977 Cowboys and Bears with a loss.
*Prior meeting: Chicago 24-23 at Chicago

E: 1978 Steelers (6-1) at 2002 Buccaneers (5-2)
*A defensive war is on tap at Raymond James Stadium. If the Bucs win, they can force a tie atop Group E with the Steelers, but a loss will drop them two off the pace and will permit no better than a split with the Steelers for the season.
*Prior meeting: Pittsburgh 13-10 in Pittsburgh

F: 1979 Steelers (4-3) at 2003 Patriots (5-2)
*The suddenly sliding Patriots now face a very crucial game against the Steelers who now have a chance to forge a tie for the lead in Group F. If the Patriots win, they can get some breathing room and guarantee a head-to-head split with the Steelers at worst. Lose and the group standings get much more compact, especially if either of the Dallas squads or Washington can get things going.
*Prior meeting: New England 23-20 at Pittsburgh

H: 1989 49ers (4-3) at 1997 Broncos (6-1)
*The 49ers are essentially in a must-win if they want any chance to catch Denver. A loss gives Denver a three-game edge at the halfway mark and they could do no better than split with the Broncos head-to-head. In addition, they'd fall into a tie with the Dolphins for second place. A win, however, and they remain one up on the Dolphins and one behind Denver with plenty of time to reel the Broncos in.

Rest of the games
A: 1974 Steelers (2-5) at 1998 Broncos (3-4)
A: 1982 Redskins (3-4) at 1990 Giants (2-5)
B: 1983 Raiders (1-6) at 1991 Redskins (7-0)
C: 1976 Raiders (1-6) at 2000 Ravens (2-5)
D: 1977 Cowboys (5-2) at 2001 Patriots (1-6)
E: 1986 Giants (4-3) at 1994 49ers (2-5)
F: 1987 Redskins (3-4) at 1995 Cowboys (2-4-1)
G: 1980 Raiders (1-6) at 2004 Patriots (6-1)
G: 1988 49ers (3-4) at 1996 Packers (5-2)
H: 1981 49ers (2-5) at 2005 Steelers (2-5)

n00b question - what is the CG designation in the boxscore? It looks like an extra quarter after the 4th but before overtime. And it only appears in some games.

"CG" means that the game has gone down to the last couple of minutes and a trailing team is trying to get a score to either win or force OT. Teams in Quick Play Football are rated for offense, defense, and ability to win close games. It is this "close game" rating that is used to determine how successful a team is in scoring. Some teams are terrible at it while others thrive on it.

The reason I list it separately is how the process works. You roll on a chart for each quarter score for each team, then determine if the teams are within a possession of one another. If they are, the trailing team will try to pull out a win on the "close game" chart. I decided to keep the "CG" points separate from the fourth quarter to further parse how the team accumulated points over the course of a game.

After a little bit of thought, I have tweaked the playoff format some. I decided to give a reward to all group winners by giving them home field in the first round. After that, the quarters, semis, and finals will all be done at a neutral site.

It occurred to me to do this because there's a heck of a race for first in Group D that would be rendered meaningless because both teams would make the playoffs at present without any real benefit for finishing first. This should lend another bit of tension to all the matchups through the second half as teams not only battle to get in, but now also battle to get a home field advantage for the opening round.

Schedule for Week 11

The Big Games
D: 1985 Bears (6-2) at 1977 Cowboys (6-2)
*The Bears and Cowboys have quite a rivalry going at this point with two hard-fought contests under their belts. The Bears are almost in a must-win if they want to grab the group crown from Dallas. If Dallas wins, they would be effectively two games ahead because they will clinch any tiebreaker with the Bears on head-to-head.
*Prior meetings: Dallas 26-25 at Dallas, Dallas 13-10 at Chicago

E: 1986 Giants (4-4) at 1978 Steelers (6-2)
*The Giants are in third in Group E, so they're currently on the outside looking in at the Steelers. A win here and they cut the deficit to one game on the Steelers and a game-and-a-half on the idle Bucs. A loss, however, would be devastating as they would fall three behind Pittsburgh. On top of that, the Steelers would win the head-to-head tiebreaker, making it more like a four-game lead with seven to go.
*Prior meetings: Pittsburgh 21-10 at Pittsburgh, 16-14 at New York

H: 1997 Broncos (6-2) at 1973 Dolphins (4-4)
*Not a do-or-die game for the Dolphins, but it's close. A Dolphin win may propel them into second if the 1981 Niners can upset the 1989 Niners this week. A loss, however, basically puts the Broncos out of reach with similar math (3 games down, lose HtH tiebreaker) as outlined for the Giants against the Steelers above. Their one advantage is they have swept both meetings with the 1989 49ers so far, so even if they lose here, they can still compete with San Francisco for a playoff berth. If the 1989 Niners do win, however, they'll be two down and need a little help to catch up.
*Prior meetings: Denver 20-14 at Miami, Denver 27-17 at Denver

Rest of the Games
A: 1990 Giants (2-6) at 1966 Packers (8-0)
A: 1982 Redskins (4-4) at 1974 Steelers (2-6)
B: 1991 Redskins (8-0) at 1967 Packers (2-6)

C: 1992 Cowboys (5-3) at 1968 Jets (3-5)

D: 1993 Cowboys (4-4) at 1969 Chiefs (3-5)
E: 1994 49ers (3-5) at 1970 Colts (1-7)
F: 1995 Cowboys (3-4-1) at 1971 Cowboys (3-4-1)
F: 1987 Redskins (3-5) at 1979 Steelers (4-4)
G: 1996 Packers (6-2) at 1972 Dolphins (3-5)

H: 1989 49ers at (5-3) 1981 49ers (2-6)

Schedule for Week 12

Big Games
A: 1982 Redskins (4-5) at 1998 Broncos (4-4)
*Normally, the requirement to be discussed as a "big game" is that both teams have to be over .500. However, there is a dearth of those this week. Along with that is the fact that the Packers have run away with this group, so this gets to be discussed because it will have an impact on the race for second in Group A. With the series split so far at 1-1, this game won't clinch a tiebreaker for either team, but it will give the winners a leg up for a while and make the losing team chase them. It may be a little more critical for the Redskins as they are already one down in the loss column.
*Prior meetings: Denver 29-0 at Denver, Washington 24-17 at Washington

F: 1971 Cowboys (4-4-1) at 1979 Steelers (5-4)
*The resurgent Cowboys are suddenly in the thick of the playoff race in Group F. A win here and they will overtake the Steelers for the second playoff berth in Group F. Even if the Patriots win, they'd still be only two back of first place. A loss changes things, though. If Pittsburgh wins, they clinch any tiebreaker over the Cowboys and also move a game-and-a-half ahead in the standings, making them just a little tougher to catch.
*Prior meetings: Pittsburgh 30-22 at Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh 45-17 at Dallas

Rest of the Games
A: 1966 Packers (9-0) at 1974 Steelers (3-6)
B: 1967 Packers (2-7) at 1975 Steelers (5-4)

I gotta say the 66 Packers look like a real juggernaut here though that doesn't suprise me much.

Out of curiosity, what has the 91 'Skins with the perfect record?

Phil Simms leads one last drive, capped by a TD by Joe Morris that ties the game and forces OT. The Giants have a chance to steal the win when they block Grammatica's chance at a winner, but Ronde Barber cuts in front on an out pass by Simms and takes it to the house for the win. Out of curiosity, what has the 91 'Skins with the perfect record?

Of course, you'd have to jinx it for the Packers....

As for the 'Skins, your question seems incomplete, but I'm guessing you're asking why they're so good? They have a very potent offense for one thing. They did erupt for 35 points in one quarter against the Broncos in Super Bowl XXVI. They are basically the only team that has an offense that can match the Rams point-for-point and they've been very successful against the Rams so far.

Schedule for Week 13

Big Games
A: 1998 Broncos (5-4) at 1966 Packers (9-1)
*It's a big hill to climb, but you gotta start somewhere. The Broncos are 3.5 games behind the Packers for first place in Group A. A Packer win expands the lead to 4.5 games and virtually clinches the group title. Denver would be mathematically alive still, but they'd have to win all their games and the Packers lose all their games for Denver to win the group. However, a Packer loss reduces the lead to 2.5 games and the hill gets a little less strenuous. More importantly, they'll gain some breathing room on both Pittsburgh and Washington with a win.

B: 1991 Redskins (9-0) at 1975 Steelers (6-4)
*A fairly significant game that has a broad impact on the chase for both spots in Group B. A Redskins win moves them to 10-0 and at least a three-game lead on the Rams with six to go, a very difficult lead to overcome. However, if the Steelers can pull the upset, the Rams and Steelers both get a little more involved in the chase for first. As it is, the Rams and Steelers look like they'll be trading punches to the end of the season for the second berth out of Group B.

F: 2003 Patriots (6-3) at 1971 Cowboys (4-5-1)
F: 1995 Cowboys (3-5-1) at 1979 Steelers (6-4)
*Due to the compactness of the standings in Group F, I'm lumping these two together for discussion. If the Patriots and Steelers win, they gain a bit of breathing room on the rest of the group. If both the Cowboy squads win, then we're looking at all kinds of chaos beginning to take shape with everyone basically within two games of one another.

Rest of the Games
A: 1990 Giants (2-7) at 1974 Steelers (4-6)
B: 1999 Rams (6-3) at 1967 Packers (2-8)
C: 2000 Ravens (3-6) at 1968 Jets (3-7)
C: 1992 Cowboys (6-3) at 1976 Raiders (3-7)
D: 2001 Patriots (2-7) at 1969 Chiefs (4-6)
D: 1993 Cowboys (4-5) at 1977 Cowboys (8-2)
E: 2002 Buccaneers (7-2) at 1970 Colts (2-8)
E: 1994 49ers (3-6) at 1978 Steelers (8-2)
G: 2004 Patriots (7-2) at 1972 Dolphins (4-6)
G: 1996 Packers (7-2) at 1980 Raiders (3-7)
H: 2005 Steelers (3-6) at 1973 Dolphins (4-6)
H: 1997 Broncos (7-2) at 1981 49ers (3-7)

Off: 1982 Redskins, 1983 Raiders, 1984 49ers, 1985 Bears, 1986 Giants, 1987 Redskins, 1988 49ers, 1989 49ers

Code:

Wow. The Packers come back with a vengeance and crush the Broncos, leaving no doubt who is the best in Group A. Green Bay officially clinches a playoff berth with the win. They are also virtually assured of winning the group title and hosting a first-round game at Lambeau Field. Denver has a thin reed to cling to if they can sweep all their games and the Packers lose them all that they can win the group, but that's not likely to happen. Denver now has to work on staying ahead of Washington and Pittsburgh for the second berth from Group A.

*The Rams suffer a surprise reversal on the road at Green Bay as the Packers, outplayed for most of the game, erupt for 17 points in the final quarter, the last points coming on a Donny Anderson run from 23 yards, stealing the game from the Rams and dealing a severe blow to their chances of catching the Redskins in Group B.

*A hard-fought contest in Pittsburgh sees the unbeaten Redskins make just enough plays to stay perfect. Coupled with the loss by the Rams, the Redskins have a commanding four-game lead with six to play in Group B. Despite the loss, the Steelers are consoled by the fact that the Rams were upset, so they are still just a half-game behind for the second playoff berth.

*A defensive war between the two Cowboy franchises. A trio of Eddie Murray field goals give 1993 Dallas the lead, but it's only won after the 1993 team blocks a last-second kick by Effren Herrera. With the win by the 1993 team, the race for both berths from Group D tightens up a bit. The 1977 Cowboys still control things, but they've still got some work to do.

*A bad loss for the Bucs as their offense, aside from a third quarter outburst, is largely non-existent. The Colts, meanwhile, battle and scrape and cobble together enough points to pull the upset. Still, it's a longshot that the Colts would even make the playoffs at this point. Tampa Bay, meanwhile, still has a pretty good grip on second place.

*Some riverboat gambling goes on from both sides and it ends up costing the Niners dearly. Instead of playing safe and forcing Pittsburgh to go for two to tie, they try to win outright and fail. The result is that Bradshaw hits Stallworth from 8 yards out and then the Steelers need just an XP to tie it up and force OT, which they make. The Steelers then take the win in OT.

(I'll have to do some investigating of the logic behind going for two because the Niners didn't have to do it because they would have been up by 8. Instead, they went for it and as a result, the Steelers could just tie it with a TD and XP.)

*A thoroughly dominating performance in the second half by the Cowboys propels them to a big win. After a 4-0 start, the Patriots have dropped 4 of 6 and are now clinging to their playoff berth. Meanwhile, the Cowboys are continuing a remarkable turnaround from a 1-4-1 start and breathing down the Patriots' neck for the playoffs.

*A slugfest at Three Rivers. The Steelers generate just enough offense while the Steel Curtain is sturdy enough to give the Steelers an important win. Pittsburgh moves into first in the group with the win. Meanwhile, the Cowboys suffer a tough loss that leaves them 2.5 games out of the playoffs. Still in it, but it's going to be tough.

*A bit of a surprise at Candlestick as the Niners eek out an upset of the group-leading Broncos. Denver now finds itself tied with 1989 San Francisco for first. Meanwhile, the 1981 49ers move to within 3.5 games of the playoffs, but time is running short.

Schedule for Week 14

At this point, just about every game has meaning, so I'll do a write-up for all of them. Once teams start getting eliminated, I'll go back to splitting them up again.

A: 1966 Packers (10-1) at 1982 Redskins (4-6)
*The Packers clinch the Group A championship with a win or a Denver loss. The Redskins can tie Denver for second if they win and Denver loses, but a loss would potentially drop them two back with five to play if Denver wins.

A: 1990 Giants (3-7) at 1998 Broncos (5-5)
*Denver must win if it wants any chance to catch Green Bay. Otherwise, a win will keep them ahead of Washington and drop the Giants three games back and essentially out of the playoff picture. A loss, however, and they may be in a tie with Washington for second and have both the Giants and idle Steelers just a game back.

B: 1967 Packers (3-8) at 1983 Raiders (1-9)
*Green Bay needs to win, not only this week, but in the coming weeks and get lots of help to make the playoffs. A loss means they'll be at least three back with four games left and essentially done. The Raiders were eliminated a couple of weeks ago, but they can still play spoiler to somebody.

B: 1991 Redskins (10-0) at 1999 Rams (6-4)
*If the Redskins win, they remain unbeaten. More importantly, they would clinch the Group B championship and home field in the first round. A loss would open the door slightly for either the Rams or the idle Steelers. For the Rams, a win strengthens their hold on second place a little, while a loss drops them into a tie with the Steelers for the second playoff berth.

C: 1968 Jets (4-7) at 1984 49ers (9-1)
*If the Jets want to get into the playoffs, they have to start winning now. A loss here, combined with a Dallas win pretty much buries their chances. For the 49ers, a win is another step towards the group title, but a loss coupled with a Dallas win suddenly makes the finishing stretch more treacherous.

C: 1992 Cowboys (7-3) at 2000 Ravens (3-7)
*For Dallas, it's getting pretty simple. Win and they're all but assured to at least have a playoff berth. In addition, it would eliminate both Baltimore and Oakland from the playoffs because Dallas holds the tiebreaker over both teams.

D: 1969 Chiefs (5-6) at 1985 Bears (6-4)
*The Chiefs are very much alive right now and a win here will just leave them a half-game behind the Bears for second. A loss, however, and they will be in some trouble. For the Bears, they need to right the ship to fend off both the Chiefs and the 1993 Cowboys. A win also draws them to a game back of the 1977 Cowboys, though they lose the tiebreaker to Dallas. A loss, however, and they fall essentially three back of 1977 Dallas with five games left. On top of that, both the Chiefs and 1993 Cowboys would be all over them for second place.

D: 1993 Cowboys (5-5) at 2001 Patriots (2-8)
*After the surprise upset of the Bears, the Patriots still cling to a very, very slender reed for the playoffs, but a loss is all but certain to eliminate them. For Dallas, a win will keep them in contention for second place and apply all sorts of heat on the Bears. A loss combined with a Chicago, however, and all the heat's on them.

E: 1970 Colts (3-8) at 1986 Giants (4-6)
*For the Colts, it's essentially an elimination game. They have to win and get help. The Giants also need help, but could absorb a loss and still be (barely) alive. A win, however, combined with a Bucs loss, and they'll be two back with five to play, which is much more feasible.

E: 1994 49ers (3-7) at 2002 Buccaneers (7-3)
*The 49ers face extinction as a loss gives the Bucs the tiebreaker over them and they'd have to hope for all manner of silly things to happen to even sniff a berth. For Tampa, a win pretty much gives them at least one berth in the playoffs. It also clinches a berth for Pittsburgh. It'll then be a battle to the finish for first between those two teams. A Tampa loss, however, and things might (just might) get a little interesting.

F: 1971 Cowboys (5-5-1) at 1987 Redskins (4-6)
*The Cowboys have risen from the dead and are now challenging for a playoff spot. A win and a Patriots loss and they tie for second place. However, a loss, and they drop into a tie with the Redskins and fall behind in the tiebreaker. On the other side, a Washington loss combined with a Patriots win really puts the 'Skins behind the eight ball. However, this group is such a train wreck that a loss won't put anyone in peril of elimination just yet.

F: 1995 Cowboys (3-6-1) at 2003 Patriots (6-4)
*Well, maybe the Cowboys would be in peril. A loss drops them 3.5 games back with just five to play. They'd survive, but barely. A win and everything goes into the crapper again for finding out who makes it out of this group. For the Patriots, a win can stop an ugly 2-4 slide, strengthen their playoff chances, and tie them with the idle Steelers for first place. A loss would be demoralizing at this point.

G: 1972 Dolphins (5-6) at 1988 49ers (3-7)
*The 49ers are clinging to life right now. A loss is nearly certain to eliminate them, though they catch a break in that the Patriots and Packers are playing each other, so they can only fall further behind one or the other, but not both. Still, a lot has to happen. For the Dolphins, their situation is critical, but not grave. Yet. A loss and it'll get grave in an instant. However, a win combined with a Patriot loss will make things more interesting.

G: 1996 Packers (8-2) at 2004 Patriots (7-3)
*A pivotal battle as the winner gains the upper hand for the Group G title. If the Packers win, they go up two and are more certain to clinch at least a berth. If the Patriots win, they tie up the division lead and gain the tiebreaker advantage for the moment.

H: 1973 Dolphins (5-6) at 1989 49ers (7-3)
*The Dolphins are hanging tough, but they still need some help. They can do themselves a world of good with a win as they could draw to 1.5 games of the 49ers. If Denver also loses, that helps them further still. A loss, however, and the road gets a lot rougher. For the 49ers, a win will guarantee at least a tie for first for one more week.

H: 1997 Broncos (7-3) at 2005 Steelers (3-7)
*The Broncos can eliminate the Steelers with a win and also retain first place. So, this is do or die for Pittsburgh. Their fortunes would be helped a by a Miami win, as well.
Off: 1974 Steelers, 1975 Steelers, 1976 Raiders, 1977 Cowboys, 1978 Steelers, 1979 Steelers, 1980 Raiders, 1981 49ers
