bombs dropping?
Here is a technical question about dropping bombs from an airplane. say you drop a large number of bombs in a small area. How does the bomb keep from detonating before it hits ground? And what i mean by that is how does the bomb keep from exploding from a different bombs blast

It doesn't always. Other blasts can definitely set off a follow-up bomb. It all depends on fuse type, casing, etc etc etc.

Its amazing how you try to write a serious question, and some people just want to troll.

I guess that makes sense. So the relative thickness of the casing can have a definate effect. how does the fuse affect this phenomenom?

Well, if your referring to me...it is kinda an unusual question, furthered by not giving any info on why you would be interested in such info...and there have been reports earlier about terrorist interest in chemical/bio bombs dropped or sprayed from small planes... |

Some bombs have impact fuses, which I would guess could trigger from another explosion. Others trigger by altitude using a built in barometer, which wouldn't be affected by other bombs nearby.

It probably is, but I've been reading quite a bit lately on WW2 bombing, and I thought it was an interesting question.

You generally don't need to drop more than one nuke in a given area...

One of the things that keeps the explosions from blowing other bombs off is that they are not usually dropped in a small area. They may all drop quickly from the plane, but the plane is going fast making the bombs much more spread out by the time they get to the ground.

Actually this is incorrect, as an explosion creates a massive concussion (aka pressure) effect, so even a pressure fuse for setting them off at a specific altitude could be set off prematurely by earlier warheads going off in close proximity. To avoid this problem altogether I would calculate the G-forces generated on impact of the bomb to the ground and use a G-meter as the trigger, unless the bombs exploding nearby create 1000's of G-forces your bombs would all reach the ground and detonate on impact. another, albeit much more expensive way to do this would be to add GPS to each bomb and have an onboard GPS tracker set off the bombs at the specified altitude. As long as they aren't Nuclear weapons, the other explosions shouldn't affect them. |

Now there at least a couple types of fuses, that allow the explosion above the groud, at contact, or once the bomb has submerged a bit. Back in WW2, there were not all these though.
