Windows Update Problems
I've been trying to update to service pack 2. For some reason, I can't get windows to update itself. I've tried to manually do it through their website and through my computer and I've set my computer to do it automatically. Whenever I right-click on my computer and go to properties, it freezes up when I try to tab over to the Windows Update tab. I've been able to get my computer to start downloading the files needed to run windows update, but for some reason it can't actually download. I think it initially needs a 677 kb file, but I've been unable to make any progress. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Can you get to the actual windows update webpage? What browser are you using to view the web page? Oh, and what version of windows are you refering to? Windows XP Home Edition?
Edited to add: Do you have a firewall running? Last edited by twothree : 09-03-2006 at 11:15 PM. |

I can get to the actual web-page but can't get any files to download. I'm using IE as a browser and Windows XP Home Edition. I do have a firewall running, but I shut it off, and it still didn't work.

Is the security setting for IE set to medium?
Is this the website address ( http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ ) you are going to? |

I cranked it all the way down to low to see if that helps any. That is the website I'm going to. This is where I'm getting stuck:
Downloading Update for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 (KB842773) (update 1 of 2)... |

That website address should be redirecting you to this website address ( http://update.microsoft.com/windowsu....aspx?ln=en-us ). I just checked. Hmmm... If you are reinstalling the operating system, you might try restarting your computer.

I'm being redirected there. I have to install SP2 to be able to synch my motorola q with my laptop. Otherwise I wouldn't be messing with any of this. I might just leave it trying to download tonight and see where I'm at when I wake up in the morning.

Try going to this page http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=842773
And dowload the update about 1/3 of the way down the page. |

Oh, and make sure you download the one for XP and not the one for Server 3000 or Windows 2000.

If that doesn't work, you will probably have to read this page ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798/ ). And, hope that something on it can solve your problem.
