Naming Faux Pas?

So, the wife and I finally discussed names for the baby number two due tomorrow. We've got a boy's name picked but we haven't really discussed one for a girl. My wife really likes Sadie for a girl with Zoe a close second. I'm not a huge fan of either name but I think I could live with either one.

Now, here's where things get interesting.

My wife then says that she really likes Macy. Hmmm...yeah, I really like that name, too. One problem...that's our first daughter's middle name!!!

Can we do this? I mean I can honestly say I don't know a single person who has the same name as a sibling's middle name. With that said, I have the same legal name as my father, and his father, and his father, and so on and so forth...but is this the same thing? My wife doesn't think it's a big deal at all but I'm not so sure about it.

Thoughts?

Probably wouldn't be my choice, but if George Foreman can name all of his kids George, I don't see why you couldn't technically do it. Besides, not too many people will even know of the same name unless they are looking at official records or are close friends, etc.

I don't think it makes that much difference. I'd rather keep the wife happy than fight a name, especially if it's one you liked enough to be your daughters middle name.

I'm thinking more about how my daughter will feel...Macy is her name even though it's only her middle name then not only does this new kid come along to steal all her attention she also steals her name.

Funny thing is that we were pressed to give our daughter a middle name before leaving the hospital and we literally were standing there with her in the carseat thinking of something to write down...Macy just popped into my head and my wife said sure.

I guess it has grown on us over the last couple of years.

You want to name both of your kids after a chain of department stores?

Does you wife have a shopping addiction?

I say go for it.

And for the record... I do actually know someone whose middle name later became their younger brother's first name.

I see no reason why not, spin it to the older one like it is an honor.

and IMO I hate the name Zoe or Zoey. it sounds like a villian from a video game.

It's a little weird, I'll admit, and I think I'd object to it if my wife brought it up. In fact, I'll have to ask her what she thinks about it. However, I think she would side with me.

We had a naming issue in my wife's family that was a bit awkward, but resolved OK. Our first daughter was named Caitlin, and several years after she was born, my wife's sister got married and then had a baby. Her husband wanted to name the child Caitlin, too, and while we obviously couldn't stop them, they settled on Katie because it would have been a bit weird. I'm not sure, but I think my wife's parents suggested picking a name that was close, but not the same. It was awkward for us because her husband (a real asshole to begin with) essentially made us feel guilty for having chosen the name he had always wanted to name a daughter. The irony is he cared so much about the name then, but not so much for the child now.

My husband and his brother have the same middle name, which is their father's first name...I think if you spun it like "since you have Macy in your name and you are such an amazing daughter/little girl, we want your sister to have the name Macy too" that might work.

Father's first names/son's middle names are different, IMO. That's a case where a name is being passed down, and they are both middle names anyway. We do that in my family - my dad has his dad's first name as his middle name, I have my dad's, and if we had a boy, he would have had mine.

Having one child with the same middle name as another child's first name is...odd. There's nothing wrong with it, per se, it's just...there are so many names in the world, my view is you just pick another one. That one is "taken" within the family, so you move on. But it probably isn't that big a deal, because how many people are going to know the one child's middle name anyway?

Can you? Yes

Should you? No

I've met a few women that, for whatever reason, use their middle name instead of their first. You've given your 1st child Macy as a middle name. I'd suggest staying away from using it unless there is some family reason for using Macy twice. (Like your Mother had Macy as a middle name and your wife's grandmother had Macy as a first.. that would work)

Otherwise, be prepared to answer the question - 'If you liked the name Macy so much, why did I get it as a middle name and she got it as a first name?'

And keeping the peace with your spouse and going along with any name decision is bad. Your child has to live with any name you give them along with any odd consequences that come out of it so, you have to respect that.

I'll join in and say NOT a good idea. Aside from the wierdness your first daughter would have towards it, it means that she can't, if she wanted to, use her middle name as her first. Or, she'll do it just to spite you later on .

I was thinking Montgomery Ward (can have a little brother, Jefferson). Or in the case of twins, Strawbridge and Clothier (kinda geographically specific I guess).

Personally, worry about the youngest, too. If my older brother's middle name was Shane, I'd be a bit salty that I didn't get two original names, instead they just cherry picked the other name of my brother because he had two good names... If that would have happened, I would have gone down the street and not across the road.

It's funny. Not once in our lives has it even really been brought up that my brother's name is the same as my middle one. So that means it wouldn't be an issue for anyone!

Sadie is still number one but it's still up for discussion. I'll be doing some research tonight/tomorrow and will present my case tomorrow night. That's provided our family's newest member doesn't arrive on Friday the 13th.

Well, dude has had an alcohol issue, been prone to violence, refuses to help with the child, and repeatedly has said he wishes she had never been born. And she's still married to him. This is the same guy who, after the wedding, split up all the cash they received from the wedding and kept, in his own account, the money they got from his relatives/friends and gave her the money from "her side." I've stayed out it, but I've made my feelings known to my wife. It's just a bad situation all around, IMO.
