So many memories locked up for now, the contrast and definition is gone, but I can /feel/ them with every slash against evil, and I can feel them in the tales told around the bright fires of camp when the night is blacker than Underdark save for the brightest of stars. There is no greater joy than to experience the vanquishing of evil and the rewards that come with it."

Well folks, it's been a long, hard battle. I will always remember you as worthy compatriots in the fight against... um... those evil scales. I'll now retire to my stronghold. You're welcome to visit for a pint of mead some day.

Attributes

ATTRIBUTES

First off, sorry for the late delay. Shouldn't happen again. Let's get started.

This is directed at those who know nothing about stats in D&D, it's a little primer designed to let you make the best choices for your character. First, I'll explain what each attribute is and does, then each of you will have a choice in how you're going to generate your stats.

First thing first, though. There are six primary stats in D&D. In prior editions, there were some stats (STR, CON, DEX) more important than others (CHA, WIS -- unless you were a cleric). In 4th edition, each stat is important, because they not only determine what kind and how effective your powers are (Powers will be covered after stats), but how well your skills are (they're coming up too, but they're easy). For each class, some attributes are more important than others. So, after a description of each stat, I will list the classes that use those stats the most, in order of importance. This should influence where you put the highest scores in.

Here are the attributes for D&D:

Strength (STR) measures your character’s physical
power. It’s important for most characters who fight
hand-to-hand.
  • Melee basic attacks are based on Strength.
  • Clerics, fighters, paladins, rangers, and warlords have powers based on Strength.
  • Your Strength might contribute to your Fortitude defense.
  • Strength is the key ability for Athletics skill checks.
HUMANS may pick ONE stat, and they get +2 to that stat.
GOLIATHS get +2 to STR

1st Important stat for: Wardens
2nd Important stat for: Swordmages, Rogues
3rd Important stat for: --

Constitution (CON) represents your character’s
health, stamina, and vital force. All characters benefit
from a high Constitution score.
  • Your Constitution score is added to your hit points at 1st level.
  • The number of healing surges you can use each day is influenced by your Constitution.
  • Many warlock powers are based on Constitution.
  • Your Constitution might contribute to your Fortitude defense.
  • Constitution is the key ability for Endurance skill checks.
HUMANS may pick ONE stat, and they get +2 to that stat.
HALF-ELVES get +2 to CON
GOLIATHS get +2 to CON

1st Important stat for: --
2nd Important stat for: Warlocks, Wardens
3rd Important stat for: Swordmages, Druids, Bards

Dexterity (DEX) measures hand-eye coordination, agility, reflexes, and balance.
  • Ranged basic attacks are based on Dexterity.
  • Many ranger and rogue powers are based on Dexterity.
  • Your Dexterity might contribute to your Reflex defense.
  • If you wear light armor, your Dexterity might contribute to your Armor Class.
  • Dexterity is the key ability for Acrobatics, Stealth, and Thievery skill checks.
HUMANS may pick ONE stat, and gain +2 to that stat.
HALFLINGS get +2 to DEX
ELADRIN get +2 to DEX

1st Important stat for: Rogues
2nd Important stat for: Druids, Avengers
3rd Important stat for: --

Intelligence (INT) describes how well your character
learns and reasons.
  • Wizard powers are based on Intelligence.
  • Your Intelligence might contribute to your Reflex defense.
  • If you wear light armor, your Intelligence might contribute to your Armor Class.
  • Intelligence is the key ability for Arcana, History, and Religion skill checks.
HUMANS may pick ONE stat, and gain +2 to that attribute.
DEVAS get +2 to INT
ELADRIN get +2 to INT

1st Important stat for: Swordmages
2nd Important stat for: Bards
3rd Important stat for: Warlocks, Avengers

Wisdom (WIS) measures your common sense, perception,
self-discipline, and empathy. You use your
Wisdom score to notice details, sense danger, and get a
read on other people.
  • Many cleric powers are based on Wisdom.
  • Your Wisdom might contribute to your Will defense.
  • Wisdom is the key ability for Dungeoneering, Heal, Insight, Nature, and Perception skill checks.
HUMANS get to pick ONE stat, and gain +2 to that stat.
DEVAS get +2 to WIS

1st Important stat for: Druids, Avengers
2nd Important stat for: --
3rd Important stat for: Wardens

Charisma (CHA) measures your force of personality,
persuasiveness, and leadership.
  • Many paladin and warlock powers are based on Charisma.
  • Your Charisma might contribute to your Will defense.
  • Charisma is the key ability for Bluff, Diplomacy, Intimidate, and Streetwise skill checks.
HUMANS may pick ONE stat, and gain +2 to that stat.
HALFLINGS get +2 to CHA
HALF-ELVES get +2 to CHA

1st Important stat for: Warlocks, Bards
2nd Important stat for: --
3rd Important stat for: Rogues

---------------------------------------------------------------------

There's three ways of getting your attributes, and each of you will be able to choose how you wish to generate them for your character:

First way is with the STANDARD ARRAY:
  • Take these six numbers and assign them to your abilitiesany way you like: 16, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10.
  • Apply your racial ability adjustments after you assign the scores to your abilities. So, a DEVA character would arrange those score in any way he wanted, then after they are arranged, would add +2 to Intelligence and Wisdom.
  • You get a good, but not great, set of attributes, and is the easiest to do.
Second way is with a POINT BUY SYSTEM:
  • This method is a little more complicated than the standardarray, but it gives comparable results.
  • With this\ method, you can build a character who’s really good in one ability score, but at the cost of having average scores in the other five.
  • Start with these six scores: 8, 10, 10, 10, 10, 10.
  • You have 22 points to spend on improving them. The cost of raising a score from one number to a higher number is shown on the table below.
Score Cost
9 — 1
10 1
11 1
12 2
13 3 14 5
15 7
16 9
17 12
18 16

So, to move a stat from 8 to 9, it would cost 1, and to move it from 9 to 10 would cost 1 more. To move a stat from 13 to 14 would cost 5. You get the picture.

The third and most popular (but more random) is by ROLLING ATTRIBUTES:
  • Roll 4d6 (that's four 6-sided dice together) and drop the lowest score.
  • Add the top three rolls into a single number, which will give you a score from 3 to 18.
  • Do this 6 times. Take those 6 scores and distribute them into the 6 attributes how you see fit
  • Add your racial bonuses, ie, Devas would get +2 to INT and WIS
If you wish to do it this way, PM me and I will roll for you, and give you your scores. Be wary, though, you could get fantastic results, or very, very poor ones.

So, next step: each of you either PM or post here how you want to generate your stats. If you want to keep your stats hidden from the rest of the group (and some players like that, adds to the mystery of their character), PM me. If it doesn't matter, post it for all to see and critique.
Any questions, PM me or post here.

I wonder if one or two of us should do the random thing and let the others just pick theirs.

I'm also all for just keeping all the scores a secret.

Is it my imagination or is the point buy system not worth it? Looking at the standard array, with the point system even getting one stat to 15 would be 1+2+3+5+7=18, and you're almost done with your 22 points. Am I missing something?

Assuming it is ok for the peanut gallary to comment, I've always prefered rolling. The only positive, IMHO, of the point buy system is that you can make sure you don't have any weak stats.

With the standard array, you can get a 16 attribute. With the point buy system, it would cost 27 points?

The point buy system is for an all-around player. If you aim for as average as possible, if my math is right, you can get 13 for one stat and 12 for the rest. Depending on the race, you could do this and end up with 14-15 stats for a few and 12 for the rest.

It's not the system to use if you are trying to specialize in one or two stats.

Actually, I'd prefer it if non-players posted, either suggestions or comments, so I certainly appreciate your input, Eaglesfan.

Sabotai and Eaglesfan are right -- the point buy is really for a "well-rounded" character, and many DM's (not me) refuse to use any other method, because it's impossible to generate a high stat at beginning levels.

Most people I played with use dice to roll stats, but there's been some HORRIBLE rolls in the past. It's really the luck of the draw.

Standard Array guarantees an 18 in a stat if you apply racial bonuses to the stat you put your 16 in. It can create some inbalance, since you have a 10 to deal with as well, but some like the middle-ground it creates.

Really, it's all up to personal preference. NTNDeacon and Peregrine, I got your PM's. Responding shortly.

Seriously, anyone who isn't in the game who would like to participate in some fashion, lemme know. I could use some people to play the monsters in combat. Suggestions and comments, especially if it's not positive, it needed as well. I can't fix what I don't see broken.

I didn't volunteer to be a main character in the game because of time concerns, but being a monster sounds like it could be a lot of fun. I don't have any of the rule books from the latest edition, but it sounds like that wouldn't be too much of a hinderance.

Monday sounds reasonable. Again, everyone here has things they need to do outside of this board, so unless there's someone who doesn't respond for days, I'm not setting a hard deadline for things.

Next up will be distribution of skills, which are different per class. Each of you will be getting a PM from me in a few days with what you get automatically, and what you will have to choose from.

Each class gets a "Trained" skill automatically, which I will PM each of you. Trained skills get +5 to any roll made for that skill. In addition, each player may pick anywhere between 3 and 5 more skills to "Train", which will give them +5 to those skills. The class determines what skills you may train. The rest of the skills each of you will have, but you just won't get the +5 when you roll them.

Each skill is also linked to an attribute, so whatever your bonus is on that attribute, you will get on the skill. For example, if you are using a skill that is linked to STR, and you have +2 bonus on STR, you will get +2 to that skill. Your attribute bonuses are being PM'ed to each of you.

Here are the skills and what they are:

OUR CHARACTERS

Greyroofoo -- Milo the Hungry, a 1st Level Halfling Swordmage
Peregrine -- Sethi, a 1st Level Half-Elf Warlock
Sabotai -- Joran Kyn, a 1st Level Human Druid
Quikshot -- Carnax Nemeth, a 1st Level Deva Avenger
Sgran -- Gley Snuter, a 1st Level Eladrin Rogue
NtnDeacon-- Flul Speng, a 1st Level Goliath Warden

I will soon be sending some PM's to flesh out each character. In the meantime, let me set a stage so everyone can introduce themselves.

You are in the Elsir Vale, an large valley that is used mostly for travel, and has the Elsir River, the main river route to the dwarven city of Overlook, the first (and main) line of defense against the Orcish lands to the west:

Each of you are in Brindol, a medium-sized town of 2,000 that lies near the center of the Vale. To the west, past Drellin's Ferry, lies the large city of Overlook. To the east lies the ancient Dragonborn desolate cities of Yarn. To the south are mountain ranges that legend say the rakshasha built temples and monstaries before they were seduced to evil. To the south lies ancient castles once manned by the human kingdoms long since forgotten.

In either case, Brindol is a prime central location for heroes looking to dip their feet into places of adventure and treasure. Brindol itself has been peaceful for over a decade, since a group of adventurers arrived and destroyed the goblin clan known as the "Red Hand". Brindol has a building they call the "Great Hall of Valor" where they keep the memory of the invasion and their rescuers alive.

The six of you are resting in one of the many taverns in this town, this one called the "Antler and Thistle". The bartender is an older man, weary from the many years at his job and tired of the same stories given by the numerous adventurers that have come and gone. The servers and younger women, easily amused and astonished by the same stories, especially if the tip is high:

You are in the area circled in red. It is dusk, and the bar is experiencing a slow night , with only 3 others in the bar other than the six or you.

The Bar

Here is the bar. The 3 other patrons are seated in the top right corner, talking and laughing loudly, obviously intoxicated. The bartender remains behind his bar:

Each of you, obviously, may sit where ever you like at the bar. Make sure to describe yourselves.

Ducking to squeeze in the door, a large grey bald goliath with dark patches half hidden by his clothes looked around at the near empty establishment. With a a few strides, he reached the bar and sits in front of the bartender. "One stout, please" he says to the bartender. A couple of lithoderms show on his neck and one is even on his skull.

The new map

The Goliath sits near the bartender. The barkeep glances up at the large man, barely noticing him, then nods, filling a large wooden cup with his drink, and sliding it in front of the goliath.

Smirking at the goliath briefly, he reaches under the bar, and retrieves a large leather-bound book. Sitting it on the bar, he opens and begins to read.

A tall man walks through the door to the inn. Tall, for a human. His lightly bronzed skin tells of a man who spends most of his time outdoors. Medium length black hair barely hangs down below his shoulders. Its unkemptness not helped as the man rubs his head as he approaches the bar.

"Mead, if you please." he says as the bartending glances at him. A burst of sound from the corner draws his attention. Annoyed, he rolls his eyes slightly at the drunken display in the back of the inn. He sits and waits for his drink.

A slumped, gaunt figure in a patched navy blue robe shuffles in, leaning on a staff. He approaches the bar and pulls back his hood to reveal a lean face with haunted blue eyes. Longish brown hair can only partly disguise what appear to be runes burned into his scalp, empty patches where no hair grows.

He grunts to the bartender, "Water. And food if you have it, sausages, or something." Sitting down with a slight groan on the barstool, he glances around at the others in the bar without much interest.

Perhaps you didn't notice him sitting in the corner, first glance it may have been a shadow from the candlelight. Yet there he is, sitting and not much else, back to a wall. His face is pale with odd patterns (markings?) that seem too defined to be shadows. He doesn't move, sitting there, his left arm resting on the table, the other hidden from view (resting on his lap? on a hilt? dangling outstretched towards the floor). He looks normal sized if just slightly taller, unable to tell since he's sitting. An air of mystery, or more a desire for the low-key, he looks like a man who unearthly still is poised and ready for whatever situation arises. The clothes he wears tell of a higher quality, flowing comfortable things, they look comfortable enough to spend several lifetimes in. His eyes move ever so slowly at the patrons, his face is a mask of studious concentration, save for what one could say an ever so slight smile of amusement on his lips.

Don't forget to mention that he's blue.

A loud belch roars throughout the bar causing all to look at the newcomer standing in the doorway. An average looking halfling, though unbelievably handsome in his own mind, with a rotund belly and unkempt remarks, "That was some of the best salted pork I've had in a long time!".

He walks over to the bar and orders himself an ale, celebrating his "victory" over his latest meal. He takes a seat near the bartender and begins nursing his drink.

A young, pale man enters the bar, surveys the room thoughtfully and takes a seat in the southeast corner. His long silvery hair falls over his shoulders, while his pupil-less purple eyes take stock of the odd mix of patrons. His long pointed ears suggest that he is a foreigner in these parts.

As the six of you make your way into the bar, it begins to slowly fill up with more locals. Most locals, you all assume, are used to the sight of adventurers in their town, and give you a wide berth, all the while being as friendly as possible.

A barmaid, young and obviously new at this job, accidently spills a drink on NTNDeacon's back. She breaks out into a cold sweat and she stares at the massive goliath, stammering a apology, and bracing for a backhand. The bar seems to quiet down as all eyes dart toward the giant man.

How's everyone's position? If not, lemme know and I can reposition you. In the meantime, I'm working on Feats now for each character. Expect more PM's.

"What a waste of a good drink!", exclaims the halfling.

The goliath starts at the cold liquid on his back. He stands as the young lass is apologizing and smiles at the barmaid. "It's all right. night was a bit warm anyhow." He takes off his outer most layer to wipe off the drink before putting it back on and sitting down again.

Joran smirks at the goliath's joke and goes back to nursing his mead.

The robed half-elf continues to eat his meal and drink his spring water, without paying much attention to anyone else. He occasionally glances down the bar to the others there, but that's all.
