Instead of sticking this in the YT thread where no one will see it - here:

Apparently a drunk driver "flying" out of DFW.

I guess that resolves the question why they designed that safety feature in that manner. Toll workers can't get hurt if the car flies right over the booth.

In related news, are there any photos of the toll booth worker's shorts after this incident?

D/FW INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT - For people who work at D/FW International Airport, the site of a flaming car flying over another vehicle will be tough to forget.

It happened at booth #49 of the DFW north toll plaza on Tuesday June 1, 2010. Video of the accident was leaked on YouTube. In it a car can be seen coming out the right side of the screen. DFW spokesperson David Magana estimates the car was going at least 80 miles per hour as it hit the protector barricade and went airborne. What you don't see in the video is the car in front of the flying one.

"(It) went up and over the car in the lane -- under the roof – but landed on the other side," said Magana.

Police say 22 year old Yasmine Aida Villasana was driving the car. She's charged with driving while intoxicated.

Amazingly after the accident-- while the car was burning-- Villasana reportedly got out of the car. "She attempted a couple of times to get back into her flaming car," said Magana. "We (police) prevented her from doing that."

According to the official incident report, Villasana admitted to police at the scene she drank a vodka-cranberry sometime before jumping in her car. In the same report, Villasana claims she was rear-ended as she approached the toll booth and that caused accident. But according to police an inspection of the car showed no signs of rear-end damage. It is still unclear what may have actually caused the accident. Everyone at the airport has a different theory.

"She must have had a rough night. Somebody dumped her or something, said Joyce Agormadu. She parks cars at DFW airport.

The courts will ultimately decide.

Police say skid marks along the path of the accident only appear about 123 feet from the barricade. Those marks hint at how much time past before Villasana started to break before going airborne.

The 33 news spoke with Villasana's family in Fort Worth. They say she is recovering, but will not speak on camera until she gets a lawyer. In the meantime toll booth # 49 will be closed for the foreseeable future.

Forget the toll booth guy, imagine being the car in front.

Not a tollbooth, but still a fail. The lump you see sliding across the highway after the accident...that's the driver.

I bet she had a memorable night indeed. I hope she gets jail time instead of just a slap on the wrist.

By not being in the passenger seat. See how the car slides to the left as it's airborne. If there was a passenger the last words must've been, "Thanks, dick."

It looks like he never hit the brakes in the video until the car was air born...

I was just looking at that frame by frame... I agree, I don't think he hits the brakes until liftoff.

I don't know a ton about cars, but I don't think brakes do a lot of good if the tires are not touching the ground.

Your eyes are better than mine.. I can't see where he hits the brakes in the air.

How about the car in the far right lane who has to slow down and swerve to the right to avoid hitting the driver?!

what about the people behind the wreck? They must be thinking: "alright, I need to figure out a way around this so I don't get stuck in traffic for the next 6 hours."

I'm thinking about the guy in the far left lane who apparently looked into the rearview mirror to see this thing flying at him... and braked?! I would be flooring it to get the hell out of the way.

I'm guessing they didn't really know what was happening. All they probably heard was a really loud CRASH and probably started to rubberneck like crazy.
