You think NCAA06 has a restrictive street date? Try Harry Potter.
Link to the Telegraph Story on all the things Scholastic is doing to protect The Potter..
1) All Delivery trucks delivering to stores have GPS units to make sure they don't stop/deviate. 2) The Books are contained in steel boxes with locks, you might need bolt cutters to get em open at 12:01. 3) The crates stacked up in the warehouses of delivery companies across America are marked: Please Do Not Open Before Midnight. 4) And the Biggie... As a final layer of security, booksellers have been forced to sign legal forms acknowledging that if they break the embargo, they will never again be supplied with a book by Scholastic. 10.8 MILLION copies are now being shipped.

I'll be getting my copy a few minutes after midnight on the release date! Can't wait.
I'll be hanging out, partying with other Potterites.

Damn it, I hate that I have to work so many damn hours this week.
Means I won't be able to stay up until ungodly hours in the morning playing NCAA 06 and reading the latest Harry Potter book.

I have the book! I went to Borders today and flirted with the girl at the counter and I got the book!
She was a little nerd and I took advantage of her and she gave me a copy. Oh and if you want a copy go to Borders Books on Sunset and Stephanie in Henderson Nv to get a copy! Its next to the Galleria mall.

Crazy thing is that all someone needs to do is cut the security wire (club type device) and drive ANY vehicle from humvee to 5 ton truck out of the motor pool and that's all she wrote.

I was wondering about this. I used to work in a bookstore and thought for sure that someone would break the street date (and just pay the fine) or that they would get an advance copy and hawk it on Ebay. But this is pretty amazing. I'm sure someone will still break it, though.

Yeah, it seems hard to enforce too. I mean, stores have to report each other for breaking street dates. To me, if it were a mall or something and two stores competing..they'd just make some sort of arrangement to sell it early at the same to get folks to their store rather than somewhere else.
You'd just hope that the media didn't cover the story (local or whatever) and then have that get back to Scholastic. Otherwise, I don't know if it's anything other than an idle threat. A good one, sure. But..I dunno...seems difficult to enforce in real life.

Im pretty sure most all stores have a service similar to soundscan, so when they ring it up on the register, it would be reported as being sold, therefore showing that they broke the streetdate. Unless they werent ringing it out on the register(of course).

Scholastic also employs folks who go in to a bunch of stores and try to buy it, trying all the tricks.
If it was the police, it would be similar to entrapment..

Frankly, I'm not sure if it wasn't to deter the BIG sellers from selling it at 11:00 or something. So someone like Barnes and Noble all around the country sells it early, getting a jump. I'm sure they don't really care about the small sellers, though if it is REAL obvious (like gets on the news), they may have to make an example.

Naw, for entrapment you have to prove that you wouldn't have had the propensity to do the illegal thing without the pressure. It's very hard to prove. So, if someone goes into a store and you just sell them the book, it wouldn't be analogus. OTOH, if they used threats or similar, you'd have an argument.

Nah, my fiancee' preordered if for me for my birthday. The bad thing is that I though she ordered it through Amazon, which guarantees it to be delivered on the release date or your money back. Instead, she ordered it through Barnes & Noble, which doesn't have that guarantee. So now I'm gonna have to wait a week or so after the book comes out before I can read it...

I think I pre-ordered the book months ago, but I can't find any confirmation e-mail or anything...I'll wait a day or so to see if a charge hits our checking account and if not, then I'll go buy it...I am re-reading the first 5 in preparation (on #2 now) so I might need an extra day or two to finish them all anyway. |

Can't say that I see what the fuss is about. I could probably name fifty fantasy novels I've enjoyed more. Not that I think it's bad-- Just can't see outselling the Bible or whatever... |

Well I'm going with a bunch of friends from work and the B&N is having some events, which should give the kids and parents stuff to do while waiting (like readings from the book and whatnot). Also I've never done anything like this, so I said, what the Hell. I also stay up pretty late anyway on the weekends (at least to 4 AM), so why not read the book all night (as much as I can anyway). Quote:
Could be worse, I'm studying for the bar. I'm reading about evidence and crim law, etc. I'll have to read the book as quickly as possible so I won't be distracted while studying. Ugh.

Just heard on the radio that the big station here in Atlanta (Star 94) is giving away copies of the book all week - "win it before you can buy it". How can they do this if there are all these restrictions on when it's shipping and stuff? The promotion is sponsored by a smaller chain bookstore - Books a Million...

My aunt runs an independent bookstore in Cleveland, and my wife and I will be there at her midnight party. I'll have the book read before I go to sleep (as I did with Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix).

Australian radio station to do non-stop Harry Potter reading (Press Release) Brisbane, Australia -- Within six days the worldwide sales embargo on the latest Harry Potter book will be lifted. As soon as Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince goes on sale, Australian radio station, 973FM will read J.K. Rowling's sixth book in its entirety. Australian radio station 973FM has created a Harry Potter non-stop book reading event to be held outside a famous Brisbane city bookstore. Once the Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince hits the book stand at 9:01am (Australia Eastern Standard Time) this Saturday (07/16/05), celebrities, local identities & Potter fans will take turns in reading 10 minute passages of the book. Without knowing too much about the size of the book, 973FM has created a 12 hour roster of people to read the book. 973FM morning radio presenter, Terry Hansen points out, the secrecy surrounding the book could create problems: "What do we do if J.K. Rowling has created a gigantic book?" Official approval for the Harry Potter reading event was granted on Thursday (07/07/05) by the Christopher Little Literature Agency in the United Kingdom. Emma Schlesinger at the Christopher Little Literature Agency has placed strict instructions on the book reading - including: That the book reading must be a continuous reading of the entire book (post time of publication) with no breaks whatsoever; That the concept is completely uncommercial, not for profit, not sponsored or tied to any third party, and no one is paid to take part in the reading; That radio 973FM doesn't record for future use - this permission is strictly for one-time use. |

They also paid for 2 weeks of swim lessons, a new bike, etc...all in the past 3 months |
