2012 Week Two:

Recruiting:

Well, nothing to eventful today. I feel like I picked a good mix of players to target. I'm finding that I already can give up on some of them because other players are stepping up and getting interested. Good things ahead, I think.

I offered eight more player scholarships.

Buffalo (0-0) @ #19 Rutgers (1-0)

Heh. Looks like Buffalo could lose to one of the FCS teams if they play. We outgained them 522 to 74 on offense. Mills ran for 207 yards, Stroud picked up 131 through the air.

Final Score: Rutgers 52, Buffalo 17

Virginia (1-1) @ #17 Rutgers (2-0)

Virginia started out strong, going up 14-0 in the 1st. In the 2nd though, we scored 21 unanswered points and then never let up.

Mills ran for 108 yards and had 2 TD's on the ground and 1 through the air. Jefferson threw 2 INT's so I'm upset about that.

Final Score: Rutgers 37, Virginia 17

Boston College (0-3) @ #17 Rutgers (3-0)

Well, we won. But Jefferson has me very concerned. He threw 2 more INT's today. Is it the poor protection? I'm not sure.

Our running game was great. Mills ran for 107, Tate ran for 78, and Mitchell ran for 63.

We had two sacks and two INT's on defense.

Miami (2-2) @ #15 Rutgers (4-0)

Great win. I thought this would be tough but we played great.

Jeferson finally didn't throw any INT's. HE threw for 220 yards and 2 TD's. Mills ran for 174 yards on 29 carries with 3 rushing TD's and 1 receiving TD.

Fred Page had two sacks, and our defense had 5 total.

2012 Week Seven:

Recruiting:

After finishing last week, we are now ranked #10. Hopefully the recruits like to see that.

I promised a bigger update, so I'll take you through each position and let you know what are plans are and how we are doing.

At fullback, Davis has us at #1. We're out of the running for Jackson but that's not a problem. Davis is the guy we want.

Tight end was looking good, but our #2 Lewis committed to West Virginia. We did land Baker, but I have a 4* at #1 who has us listed 3rd. We've been going down consistently down and I'm pretty worried about it.

We're doing great at tackle, with all four guys listing us as their #1 school. Wisconsin is coming up close at #2 for our favorite, Tucker.

At guard, our #1 player is a JUCO transfer. We're at #1 and feeling safe. The rest of the players are very similar and as long as I land one of the others I'll be happy.

At DT, we have a 4* listing us #1. Michigan State is a close 2nd though.

We got an OLB commit early on, and now have another 4* with us listed at #1. We have a comfortable lead over Virginia Tech.

MLB is an interesting race. We have a Canadian player who favors BYU by an extremely small margin. He's a 4*, but our #2 is also a 4*, but a JUCO. We're his #1.

CB is looking great. We have four 4* recruits who all have us #1. Parks favors us by a huge margin, Doucette has Virginia Tech behind us by a very small margin, and the other two aren't far enough away to make me very comfortable, but I'm not worried. I see us getting at least two of these guys.

At FS, we had a 5* from Florida but nothing ever came of it.

SS is similar, with a 5* guy with minimal interest. But we also have a 4* there, Oscar Fields. We're in a close race with Minnesot to get him, but he says we're his #1.

When it comes to the athletes, 5* Corey McDaniel, who had us way down his list, has really started to like the idea of coming to NJ. We're now his #2, behind West Virginia. We're a little ways away, and he gave his visit with us a B+ grade, but we're hopeful. 4* Alan Anderson has us #1 by a large margin.

Okay....with that out of the way, this week we spent a good 50 minutes with 5* ATH McDaniel. We hit on three pitches which shoud gain us some solid interest.

I then spent a ton of time with 4* TE Southall. We spent about 90 minutes with him but hit on four pitches.

I spent a minimal amount of time on some other players, then hit DT and MLB hard, hoping to solidfy my interest with those recruits.

#10 Rutgers (5-0) @ #23 Georgia Tech (4-1)

This should be a tough matchup. This is the first of a four game roadtrip. During that time, I play #23 Georgia Tech, #3 Virginia Tech, and #7 Maryland. Great.

Woo! We pulled off the win in convincing fashion! Jefferson went 1 of 19 for 171 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. Mills was great again, running 25 times for 182 yards, with a 7.2 YPC average.

Hamby and Williams both had two sacks on defense, and Page and Alvarez each had one as well.

Mason had a 104 yard kickoff return for a TD in the 4th quarter.

2012 Week Eight:

Recruiting:

Huge game this week that could turn the tide in some of my recruiting battles.

I started off the the usual suspects, ATH McDaniel, SS Branch, and TE Southall. Southall has moved me up to #1 after a great week with him last week.

The conversation with Branch was awful. He hung up on me before I could get any pitches done. Ugh. McDaniel was better, and I got four pitches done with him in about two hours. Southall was average.

I have 6:20 left, so I'm going to spread it out among our top recruits and need positions.

I then went after 4* MLB Horton and spent a ton of time on him, but got 4 pitches in.

Game
:

#5 Rutgers (6-0) @ #3 Virginia Tech (6-0)

Huge, huge game with big implications for the conference, espcially with VT in our division. Lee has picked VT, and Kirk has picked us. We're pretty even, with VT being slightly better on offense, and us being slightly better on defense.

Let's kick it off.

VT takes an early lead, scoring with about 5 minutes left in the 1st. They hold us until the start of the 2nd, where we put together a drive and score a TD on a 9-yard pass. 7 minutes later, with 6:18 left in the half, we hit a 17 yard TD pass, putting us up 14-7.

We open the scoring in the 2nd half when Jefferson hits Stroud for a 6-yard TD pass. With 30 seconds left in the 3rd, VT scores a TD on a 12-yard pass.

We start the 4th up 21-14. 4 minutes in, VT scores, tieing up the game.

But with 7 minutes left, Mills ran for a 7 yard TD, putting us up 28-21. We held them off for the rest of the game and win!

Jefferson went 16-23, for 193 yards and 3 TD's. Mills put together a stellar game, running for 213 yards. Stroud went over 100 in receiving and had 2 TD's.

Recruiting:

We start out with McDaniel again, who still has us at 2nd. I don't have much time left. We get 3 pitches in but spend 1:40 on him.

We go down the list, spending around 40 minutes we players that have us #1 by a small margin.

Then we get to 4* SS Oscar Branch. We really want this guy. We spend a lot of time, but get 4 pitches in.

We spent the rest of the time with 4* MLB Horton who we get 3 pitches in with.

#3 Rutgers (7-0) @ Wake Forest (2-5)

We get the easy win.

Jefferson played plain bad, going 10-19 for 49 yards and 1 INT.

We have worse news. Mills is out for 3 weeks with broken ribs. I have good backups, but Mills is the key to our offense. He was #2 in the Hesiman Race and this is really going to hurt him.

Final Score: Rutgers 34, Wake Forest 14

2012 Week Ten:

Recruiting:

Rutgers welcomes 4* MLB Reggie Horton! He committed to us at the beginning of the week we are very, very excited.

I need to hit some other players this week. Not having to worry about Horton should help. I'm going to save McDaniel for last.

After going through, 4* TE Southall, 4* T Tucker, 4* DT Wright, 4* MLB Baker, and 4* SS Branch all have us at ful interest, but also have another team at full interest. These guys are going to come down to the wire.

I spent an hour with each, leaving me with 3:30 for McDaniel. We hit on, at least, 7 pitches. Woo!

#3 Rutgers (8-0) @ #4 Maryland (7-0)

It doesn't get any better than this. Huge, huge implications for the conference and maybe even the national championship. This is our last ranked opponent for the season. We don't have Mills though, and I'm very nervous.

Here we go.

We open up on our first drive with a FG. The rest of the 1st is scoreless.

The 2nd opens up with another FG, and then a TD to close out the half, but we miss the kick. We're up 12-0.

The 3rd is a defensive battle, with each team getting held scoreless.

Maryland scores their first points of the game in the 4th on a 19-yard TD pass.

3 minutes later, we answer back with a 58 yard strike to Jonson from Jefferson! We're up 19-7.

The Terps find the endzone again with 2:55 left, but can't get in again!

Mitchell filled in well for Mills, gaining 143 yards on the ground.

Final Score: Rutgers 19, Maryland 14

Recruiting:

We're #1! That can't hurt in recruiting.

But we open up the week with some bad news. 4* Scott has committed to Michigan. We really, really wanted him. Damn it.

Some other bad news...T Tucker has soft comitted to Wisconsin. Shit. Even more bad news is my top 2 CB's dropped me to #2.

The good news is 4* DT Wright has soft-comitted to us, and so has....5* ATH McDaniel! That week last week launched us to the top. Now we just have to finish the deal.

I spent a lot of time on TE Southall and T Tucker.

We got Southall! 4* TE Southall will finally give us a legitimate player at that position, something we haven't had in a while.

Althought that doesn't come without some bad news. DT Ricky Wright, who had soft-comitted to us only a week ago, had decomitted and is now signed on with Michigan State. Agghh.

MLB Baker signed on with Pitt, as well. That sucks.

Some more good news though, T Tucker has decomitted from another school and has soft-comitted with us.

North Carolina (5-4) @ #1 Rutgers (9-0)

This is a tough matchup. UNC has the #1 defense in the nation, and the #2 rush offense. I think Mills should be available for the game, so we may be able to counter that.

They actually rank higher than us in all aspects, except passing offense, which they rank last in nation. Should be an interesting battle.

Wow. Turned out much better than I expected.

They ran 24 times....for 28 yards! Our man Mills was back and did not slow down. 30 carries, 224 yards, and FOUR touchdowns. All this against the best defense in the nation.

Final Score: Rutgers 51, North Carolina 18

YES! WE GOT MCDANIEL!! 5* ATH Corey McDaniel is coming to New Jersey! At 5'10", 191, I'm not sure where he'll play yet, but he's going to be great wherever it is.

4* Tucker is my next target. He's soft committed to us, but Missouri is right along side us. I wanna close this deal now. I spent almost two hours with him and hit 4 pitches.

After that, it's OLB Travis Tremblay, a 4* from Iselin, NJ. Virginia Tech is right behind us. I spent about 90 minutes with him and hit 3 pitches.

Finally, we get to the CB's. 4* Parks is a virtual lock to sign with us. Amos has us slightly ahead. But when it comes to our top rated players, Kimbrough and Doucette, Kimbrough has soft-committed to us, and Doucette has soft-committed to our conference-mates VT. I have 4 hours left. It will all be spent with those two.

I get in 5 pitches with Doucette in 2 hours. The other two hours are spent with Kimbrough, who I get 2 pitches in with.

I also added a few more recruits to the board at some empty positions.

Damn...I feel bad. We hold their QB to an 18.5 QB rating. He went 9 of 27 for 24 yards and had 3 INT's.

On our side, Jefferson went 9 of 14 for 204 yards and 1 TD. Mills had 3 TD's but only ran for 79 yards on limited carries. On defense, Carter returned an INT for a TD 29 yards.

Final Score: Rutgers 63, North Texas 3

Nice! We get comittments from 4* OLB Travis Tremblay as well as 4* CB Ryan Kimbrough! Welcome to the team, boys!

But shit, we lost 4* CB Amos. He would have been really nice to have.

And fuck! We lost 4* T Tucker. Damn it!

That's really dissapointing.

I have 17 scholarships left, and currently I have 12 out, with 18 players on the board. That means it will be safe to offer schollies to everyone left on the board. But first, I want to finish some of these deals.

In 50 minutes with 4* CB Doucette, I hit 4 pitches. That should help us a lot.

With 3 hours left after talking with my main targets, I hit up all the new guys with scholarships.

Trap game, anyone? We meet up with our rivals for our last regular season game of the season. A win would make me the only undefeated team in the ACC.

And we do it! We've gone 12-0!

Mitchell stole the show, running 25 times for 146 yards and 3 TD's.

On defense, Vallone had 3 sacks.

Final Score: Rutgers 44, Syracuse 14

(on the OL) Yea, I know. As you could see from my depth chart, it really bit me in the ass this year. They overperformed though, as you can see in the Award Finalists section of my last "Around the NCAA Update"

2012 Week Fifteen:

Recruiting:

We open up the week learning that 4* (JUCO) G Jake McCargo is heading to Rutgers next year!

Luckily, we didn't lose anyone else this week. We did get some soft-commits though, which I'm hoping I can wrap up before we head into the offseason.

I start by trying to get FB Davis back on our side. He soft commited to Maryland.

Then I moved to the offesive linemen, trying to seal the deal on a few guys.

After that, I attacked the CB's. I had a great session with Doucette and Parks, so I'm really hoping they commit at the start of next week.

Recruiting:

We land 4* CB Parks and 3* T Stevenson! I was hoping for a few more but I'm happy to see this.

And that's it for in-season recruiting! Hopefully we can pull in the rest when we visit them at home.

vs.

#5 Maryland Terrapins (11-1) vs. #2 Rutgers Scarlet Knights (12-0)

Lee Picks: Rutgers
Kirk Picks: Maryland

Maryland: B OVR, B+ OFF, B DEF
Rutgers: B OVR, B OFF, B+ DEF

We had a 33-21 lead going into the 4th quarter. The Terps had the ball on our 17 when the final quarter opened, and on the first play they scored a TD on a pass.

We responded with a FG on the next drive, making it 36-28. Three minutes later with 7:26 left, they hit a 20-yard pass for a TD. They went for the 2pt conversion and missed it, making it 36-34.

We got the ball back, hoping to score a TD to get out of their reach. We couldn't, but Latimer hit a 44 yard FG to put us up by 5.

But with 40 seconds left and the Terps on the 4 yard line, their QB connected with a receiver in the end zone. They missed the 2pt conversion, but we couldn't get down the field in time.

Final Score: Maryland 40, Rutgers 39.

Heartbreaking.

WR D.J. Grant - Texas Longhorns
81 receptions. 1251 yards. 15.4 YPR. 20 TD's.

I think Mills was a lock for the Heisman if he didn't get injured and miss two games. He finished 2nd. Maybe it will convince him to stick around another year.

Check out this #2 team. A 3* prestige, TCU team had a solid year and will take on Michigan for the national championship! What an upset that would be...

Damn it! Another awful loss. What the hell happened to us?

Up 28-26 with four minutes left, we let Florida march down the field and score the go-ahead TD. We just couldn't overcome it.

Jefferson, in his final game as a college QB, went 19 of 29 for 173 and 3 TD's. Mills, in what could be his last game if he declares, rushed for 28 yards.

Final Score. Florida 32, Rutgers 28.

See you next year!

2012 NCAA National Championship:

vs.

#1 Michigan Wolverines vs. #2 TCU Horned Frogs

The last time, and only time, TCU won a national championship? 1938.

Michigan has won seven, the last time in 1997.

TCU was a controversial selection. No teams that they played in the regular season ended up as a ranked team at the end of the year. Michigan, on the other hand, played four teams that ended up ranked. No one thinks TCU has a chance.

It's time for kickoff.

TCU scored first, 10 minutes into the game. But Michigan came right back, and on the opening play of the drive, QB Feagin hit WR Roundtree on an 89 TD pass!

Michigan never let up. TCU managed to sneak in a FG with :05 left in the first half, but the damage was already done. At halftime the score was 24-10. That FG was the last time TCU would score.

Congratulations Michigan. You are the 2012 National Champions!

Final Score: Michigan 45, TCU 10

Players Leaving

Shit. Can't say I'm surprised though. This is what happens when you have a top-tier team. I need Page here. I can't have Page and Vallone leaving at the same time. Mills, as much as I love him, isn't really needed. I'll spend a little time on him. Adams is pretty much completely expendable. I'll try to keep the transfers around too. I have some recruiting time to spare, I think.

Starter

HB
Robert Mills. 5'10", 200 lbs. JR(RS). 93 OVR - Pro Draft
DT Fred Page. 6'6", 316 lbs. JR(RS). 94 OVR - Pro Draft
OLB Lance Adams. 5'11", 219 lbs. JR(RS). 90 OVR - Pro Draft
RG Lee Blalock. 6'0", 261 lbs. FR(RS). 69 OVR - Transfer
CB Russell Mason. 6'2", 197 lbs. SO. 80 OVR - Transfer

QB D.C. Jefferson. 6'6", 230 lbs. SR(RS). 88 OVR
WR Keith Stroud. 6'5", 190 lbs. SR(RS). 90 OVR
WR Timothy Wright. 6'4", 205 lbs. SR(RS). 89 OVR
WR Malcolm Johnson. 6'1", 170 lbs. SR(RS). 81 OVR

DT Scott Vallone. 6'3", 260 lbs. SR(RS). 94 OVR
MLB Eric LeGrand. 6'2", 240 lbs. SR(RS). 87 OVR
CB David Rowe. 5'10", 195 lbs. SR(RS). 81 OVR
FS Cody Richardson. 6'3", 216 lbs. SR. 87 OVR
SS Morgan Carter. 6'3", 215 lbs. SR(RS). 88 OVR

Results

I start off with Page. I really need him. I spend 65 minutes talking to him. He's coming back! Phew.

Now it's on to Mills. I spend 20 minutes with him. He tells me he wants to come back! He wants that Heisman!

Now on to Adams. I'm only going to spend 10 minutes with him. He says he needs some more time.

I spend 20 minutes with each of the players who want to transfer. Neither made a decision. Fuckers.

Back to Adams. 5 more minutes. He says his parents think he should stay in school! Nice!

5 more minutes for each of the transfer kids. Mason says he is here for the long haul. Woo! Blalock tells me to relax...he's staying!

HB Robert Mills. 5'10", 200 lbs. JR(RS). 93 OVR - Pro Draft (Staying)
DT Fred Page. 6'6", 316 lbs. JR(RS). 94 OVR - Pro Draft (Staying)
OLB Lance Adams. 5'11", 219 lbs. JR(RS). 90 OVR - Pro Draft (Staying)
RG Lee Blalock. 6'0", 261 lbs. FR(RS). 69 OVR - Transfer (Staying)
CB Russell Mason. 6'2", 197 lbs. SO. 80 OVR - Transfer (Staying)

2013 Off-Season:

Off-Season Recruiting:

Week One:

Aright boys. Let's do this. I have 14 scholarships left to give out, and I have exactly 14 players on my board. Only four of them don't have me listed as their #1, and all four have me at #2. Looking good.

I start out by setting up some home visits with players that are ready for them.

After that, I still have about an hour left, so I spend some time with players that are on the bubble.

Week Two:

We open up the week with a ton of committments! We welcome the following players to Rutgers:

4* CB Monte Doucette
4* ATH Alan Anderson
3* G Mike Smith
3* MLB Joel Moses
3* T David Abdullah
3* T Walter Frank
2* FB Mike Davis

First thing I do after that is try and get the two players who don't have me listed as #1 on board. I spent the other 5 hours pitching to players that I'm fairly confident about.

Week Three:

Hm. We open up with only one committment, this one from 2* DE Carl Carr. Welcome Carl!

Damn! We then find out that 4* QB Joe Berg is going to Maryland. Damn it!

Other than that, things look good. The 5 players left all have me #1. I may try and find one more player to add to the list and go for a last minute committment. We add 2* DT J Mann. Such a cool name.

FYI, I updated the list below in case I missed updating any signings.

Week Four:

The week starts by learning that we got two more committments.

4* DE Richard Schlicher
3* QB Keith Patterson

Welcome to the team guys!

Nothing else of interest to report.

Week Five:

We open the final week of recruiting to find that 3* HB Jason Turner, 3* DE Josh Taylor, and 3* OLB Edmond Russell have signed with us!

That leaves one player. 2* DT J Mann. I have 10 hours to spend with Mann. I better be able to land him. And...we do! Welcome to the team, J Mann.

And that wraps things up! Another full recruitment class that gives us some fresh new talent.

2012/2013 Recruiting Review

Quote:
Major Needs:

Strong Safety: Carter is leaving after this season and I don't have a surefire replacement ready yet. I need to try and get a blue chip prospect to step in right away.

Middle Linebacker: With Legrand in his last year, we have the same deal as above. Capable players beneath him, but no sure-things.

Tackle/Guard: Need a lot of players for the line. I need at least two tackles and two guards.

Tight End: Still searching.

Fullback: Not sure how the converted RB will do. I'd like a true FB.

Defensive Tackle: Vallone is graduating and Page is always a risk to leave for the draft. I definitely need some major help here.

Minor Needs:

Cornerback: I love our corner situation but our 3rd/4th are in their JR or SR years. Plus, My two starters are sophmores, and that's the best time to get the future starters in.

Those were what we said our needs were before this past season. How did we do?

Well, looking at our major needs, we did well at tight end and middle linebacker. We missed a 4* at SS, T, and DT. Nothing we did wrong, I think, just got unlucky with decisions the recruit made.

For our minor needs, we did GREAT at CB, and the 5* ATH we picked up will play there.

Roster Cuts

One problem with a full recruiting class is you have to make some tough decisions to get down to 70. Right now, I'm at 86.

It took a lot of thinking, but here are the 16 unlucky players:

WR Harris, 77
TE Pittman, 65
TE O'Brian, 67
T Brown, 67
DE Gonzalez, 78
DE Carr, 60
MLB Hawkins, 75
CB Green, 75
FS Clarke, 82
SS Fields, 58
QB Anderson, 75
HB Turner, 71
HB Tautofi, 74
DE Taylor, 67
OLB Russell, 67
FB Bradley, 67

2013 Pre-Season Notes
Returning Starters:

17 (8 Offense, 7 Defense, 2 ST)

Key Losses:

QB D.C. Jefferson. 6'6", 230 lbs. SR(RS). 88 OVR

We're very excited about Carpenter taking over, but D.C. did great for us and was as reliable as you could ask for.

WR Keith Stroud. 6'5", 190 lbs. SR(RS). 90 OVR
WR Timothy Wright. 6'4", 205 lbs. SR(RS). 89 OVR

This was the first solid receiving tandem we've had since Britt and Underwood, and we will really miss them. Nothing like having two tall WR's to hit on long passes.

DT Scott Vallone. 6'3", 260 lbs. SR(RS). 94 OVR

Oh, Vallone. We will miss you. Thank god Page decided to stay, because losing both would be devestating. Vallone was just an all-around beast. We will definitely feel the effects of his loss.

MLB Eric LeGrand. 6'2", 240 lbs. SR(RS). 87 OVR

LeGrand was a guy we redshirted, hoping he could someday be a backup. He turned out to be much more than that and was a key piece to our defense.

FS Cody Richardson. 6'3", 216 lbs. SR. 87 OVR
SS Morgan Carter. 6'3", 215 lbs. SR(RS). 88 OVR

Having two good safeties helps immensely on defense. We have great up and coming FS's, but the loss of Carter could really hurt us.

#2 Marcus Carpenter. 6'3", 212 lbs. SO(RS). 87 OVR
#18 Antoine Martindale. 6'1", 196 lbs. SR(RS). 83 OVR

#11 Shaun McDaniel. 6'3", 207 lbs. FR(RS). 72 OVR
#1 Keith Patterson. 6'2", 204 lbs. FR. 71 OVR

Outlook:

I absolutely can't wait to see Carpenter on the field. He looks as good as D.C. did when he was a senior, ratings wise. He should be something special. I also have high hopes for Patterson.

#7 Robert Mills. 5'10", 200 lbs. SR(RS). 97 OVR
#10 Wayne Mitchell. 6'0", 196 lbs. SR(RS). 88 OVR
#49 Derek Tate. 5'10", 185 lbs. SO(RS). 80 OVR

#46 Jason Archer. 6'0", 192 lbs. FR(RS). 76 OVR

Outlook:

Hot damn. Mills is definitely in the running for the Hesiman. It looks like we have a ton of running backs, and we do, but when Mills and Mitchell leave next year we'll have five guys to choose from.

#40 Mike Davis. 5'10", 199 lbs. FR. 61 OVR

Outlook:

Well, I like the way the Martin experiment has turned out. He's not that road-grader type obviously, but last year he caught 16 passes for 233 yards, a 14.6 YPR average. That's pretty spectacular for a fullback.

#89 Trey Archie. 6'4", 194 lbs. SO(RS). 83 OVR
#13 Trey Perry. 6'4", 180 lbs. SR(RS). 82 OVR
#88 Darrell Estes. 6'6", 203 lbs. SR. 80 OVR

#86 Warren Brown. 6'5", 188 lbs. FR(RS). 79 OVR
#82 Chris Busing. 6'0", 174 lbs. FR(RS). 76 OVR

#81 Michael Mullins. 6'0", 188 lbs. FR(RS). 74 OVR

Outlook:

I faced a tough decision here. The top three are all pretty similar OVR rating wise, but I love Estes' height, and he's also my fastest WR. Archie is my slowest and has pretty poor acceleration. He'll see the field as the slot receiver. This will give him some time to get better before he starts, as well.
