#2 Marcus Carpenter. 6'3", 212 lbs. JR(RS). 91 OVR
#14 Scott Ford. 6'2", 230 lbs. FR. 79 OVR
#1 Keith Patterson. 6'2", 204 lbs. FR(RS). 75 OVR
#17 Robert Ryan. 6'4", 188 lbs. FR. 73 OVR

Outlook:

I'm 99% convinced that Carpenter will hit the road after this year, and frankly, I almost hope he does. Scott Ford is gonna be legit. What you can't see here is his 89 speed rating. WOW. He is a heisman-winning type QB.

Not entirely thrilled about this group. We have great depth but losing Mills is really rough.

Baker is a converted tight end that actually looks pretty solid. It's amazing tha in all these years of recruiting I still haven't found a natural fullback worth keeping

Well, I'm not thrilled but I'm not worried either. Cantrell and Hughes are the future of the passing game, but Archie and Brown should get us through the season well enough.

Outlook:

With three of our top CB's leaving after this year, and the lack of CB's coming into the college ranks that were interested in us, I made the decision to recruit a ton of WR's and convert them to CB's. I also redshirted McDaniel and Ford this year since we could field 5 CB's without them and didn't get a big dropoff in talent.

Pipeline:

Our pipeline states are NJ, NY, PA, and FL, and CT.

Major Needs:

Tight End: I only have two on the roster and I'd like a 3rd to sit and redshirt.

Tackle: My starting LT is a JR, and my stating RT is a SR. I like our young guys but I'd like another elite player.

Guard: Same as tackle.

Center: Definitely my biggest need on the offensive line. I had to move a guard over to play center and I have a walk-on redshirting.

Strong Safety: My starter is a senior, and his backup is a sophmore. I need someone to grrom under him when he takes over.

Kicker/Punter

Minor Needs:

Backup QB
DE
DT
MLB
FS

2014 Week One:

Recruiting:

I've used a similar strategy the past two years and have gotten the #2 and #1 classes, respectively.

The first thing I want to do is go through the 4* recruits that have us as #1 and offer them a scholarship to see if they'll accept on the spot. The problem now is I have a lot of 3* guys who have me 1st, but I don't want to waste one of my 25 scholarships if I can get a guy better.

Shit. No one bit. Getting one is a huge advantage. Players, if they dont sign really early, like to wait a long time to committ. Oh well.

So with 8:20 left, we hit a broad range of players. The goal right now is to guage the interest of guys, get some movement in one direction or the other so we can develop a shortlist of guys we want to hit hard and guys that are just pulling our chain.

Louisville (0-0) @ #13 Rutgers (0-0)

First game of the year! Let's see if we overcome our losses and put together a solid game.

And we can! We outgained them 468 to 189, held them to 25 yards on the ground, and forced 4 turnovers.

Carpenter went 14 of 24 for 192 yards for 2 TD's and 1 INT.

Tate did well in his first game as the starter, running 18 times for 108 yards. Backup Mack ran 9 times for 100 yards.

Archie had a great game, catching 7 passes for 85 yards and a TD.

On defense we had two sacks and two INT's.

Virginia is a good team, but we dealt with them easily.

Our defense played great, picking off 4 passes. Offense played well but nothing out of the ordinary.

Okay, so I've been complaining about the fact that not offering scholarships has hurt me. So this week my first priority is to offer everyone a scholarship that hasn't gotten one.

Done.

Now I'm going to focus on some of the better recruits. I don't feel like I have a ton of holes so maybe I'll focus on quality of quantity.

2014 Week Seven:

Recruiting:

Big update this week. I'l do the usual and go through the positions and give a pretty detailed look at how we are doing.

At QB, we're looking to get one of the three QB's, but are heavily targeting the #3 and #6 QB's in the nation. It's not a huge need, but 4* Lionel Sims, the #3 in the nation, has us as his favorite school. The other two QB's have us as 2nd.

At running back, 5* Josh Miller has bumped us into his Top 5, but we are way behind. We'll let him visit us hoping for a miracle but I'm not going to get my hopes up. But we have another 5* on the board. Paul Auguste has us ranked 2nd, and we're right there behind Ohio St. We'll focus heavily on him.

Fullback...the position that's given us a lot of trouble over the years. There is a very close, seven team race for 4* Tracy Beach from Florida. He says he's narrowed down to the Top 5 but I still think we have a chance, that's how tight it is. 3* Larry Jones is the next guy on the list and has us at #2.

Tight end is interesting. We have four guys, and we only need one. They are all 4*'s and very similar. Currently, the #1 TE in the nation Brian Howard has us at #2 right behind Michigan. We will go after him heavily.

At Tackle, we have two players who have us in their Top 2. One is a 4*, and one is a 3*. I want both, and we're very close to their #1 team in terms of interest.

Center is a position that is a big hole for us right now. JUCO 4* Lawrence Franklin has us at 2, and everyone else has us at 5 or lower. I'd really like to land this guy.

At DE, we had two 4*'s with us at #1 last week but this week both moved us to #2.

5* DT Brian Rogers had us in his Top 3, but dropped us to 4th this week. It's a really close race though with Ohio St., Notre Dame, and Michigan. Two 4*'s, both with the last name Williams are very interested in us. One has us at #1, the other dropped us to #2 this week. We'll get him back on the bandwagon.

At LB, we have an outside back who is a 4* and has us at #3 behind Louisville and Maryland but is ready to visit us. In the middle we have a 4* and 3*, both who have us at 2.

5* FS Derek Arnold has, for all intents and purposes, narrowed down to 2 choices, Ohio St. and Rutgers. Oklahoma has a outside shot but is pretty far behind. He loved his visit here and doesn't visit Ohio St. until week 13.

SS is where I was really hoping to land a solid player. 6'7" 4* Darrell Bradley loved his visit with us but still ranks us as his #2 school. 4* Mike Walker from Illinois has warmed up to the possibility of coming to Rutgers and has us at 3 behind Iowa and Arkansas.

At P, I had the chance of courting a 5* to us but we quickly fell out of the race. 4* Ryan Young is our next target, and we're slightly behind Tennessee and LSU but have a chance.

Finally, we've been recruiting the #1 player in the country, 5* ATH Gerald Clemens from Alabama. We were thrilled to see how interested he was in us when we started the year. He has us at #3, gave his visit with us a B+, and we're slightly behind Alabama and Auburn.

Freshmen DT Dukes had 3 sacks, 9 tackles, with 7 for a loss. Great game by him.

We're falling behind on 5* ATH Clemens, so we're going to make one big push this week to gain some ground. We spend two hours with him, but only get three pitches in.

We spent the rest of our time on the defensive side of the ball, especially trying to get one of the SS's to gain interest.

All that time on defense hurt our offensive recruiting. 4* QB Lionel Sims dropped us to #2.

We also find out that we lost 4* TE Howard to Florida.

I'm finding the biggest problem this year is we have no sure things. The past few years we would get a big jump on someone early and not have to worry about them all year. I don't have that luxury now.

It's time to start making some decisions. Who is close enough to take a risk on? Who is out of reach?

If you check below, you can see who has soft-committed and who has committed to other schools. We lost a few players this week but no one that's a surprise. The soft-committs are a negative but if we can get them to stick around until the off-season we can really make a push then.

So this week, I went through my board and made decisions on who we were going to go after hard and who we were going to give up on.

2014 Week Thirteen:

Recruiting:

We lost another six players this week. I think it's time to cut my losses and just get some guys committed to our school. UGH.

I guess the best thing to do is add a few more recruits to my board. Although I was considering making a house rule that wouldn't let me do that. I'll do it this year and consider it for the offseason. Any thoughts from you readers?

NO!!!!!!5* Running Back Paul Auguste was the one redeeming quality of this class. He was set to be the next Robert Mills. We had a HUGE lead on him. But Ohio St. snatched him up. AAAAAAAAAAGH.

Eight other players committed. WTF.

Honestly, no lie, I'm looking at bringing in a 4* TE and THAT'S IT! Wow.

I'm wondering if it has something to do with the fact that NY and CT are no longer pipeline states? I'm not sure. A lot of these guys are from FL and NJ.

Personally, I'm not adding any recruiting house rules until I end up with a top 2 or 3 class over and over for 4-5 seasons, a couple great classes while building up seems to show that it may be a little too easy to build up a program, but until I have proof that its also too easy to keep one there, I'm not making changes.

Harrell-Ford-Cantrell-Hughes is gonna be the best offense in the land in 3 years, if you could convince them all to play for four years, they'll all be 95+. That's a nice offensive squad.

I wanted to note on two things for you:

FS Cody Richardson, the guy who wanted to transfer twice. I noticed you promised him things. It has been my experience that no matter what I promise, no matter if I deliver on my promises, those guys always want to leave, so now I never promise, no matter what. Just letting you know.

Also, transfer requests: I don't think any players request to transfer to schools higher than ** or *** star... they are trying to go to a school where they can get PT.

Ugh. We can't seem to win these bowl games.

TT was up 9-6 at the half, but scored a TD in the 3rd and two field goals in the 4th, making the final score 22-9.

We pressured them, with 5 sacks on defense. But when you have to go for it on 4th down 3 times and can't convert any of them, you won't win games. Plus we couldn't put the ball in the endzone which, you know, is a must.

Final Score: Texas Tech 22, Rutgers 9

See you on the field next year! I'm considering playing the games out. I hope you know this, I only mentioned it once (and games are FLYING by) but I've been simming them due to gameplay issues. Now that the patch is out I think I might give a season a whirl and see how it goes. We'll see. Not 100% sure yet. Radii, how are your stats looking with the new patch and sliders?

vs.

#1 Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. #2 Penn State Nittany Lions

Lee Picks: Notre Dame
Kirk Picks: Notre Dame

PSU: B+ OVR, A OFF, B DEF
ND: B+ OVR, B+ OFF, B+ DEF

Notre Dame opened up the scoring with a TD 5 minutes into the game. The rest of the first quarter was scoreless, but that would change quickly.

With 13:41 left in the half, Penn St. connected on a pass in the endzone, tying the game at 7, but Notre Dame struck back twice in a row, going ahead 21-7 with 2:26 left in the half. But PSU wasn't done, and with just 2 seconds left, the hit a field goal bringing the score to 21-10.

PSU was down but not out. Four minutes into the second half, they pounded the ball in from the two yard line and then went for two to bring the score within three points. And they got it! 21-18.

Notre Dame then picked up another 7 on a beautiful 30 yard pass.

Only three minutes later, they connected again, this time from 15 yards out. Notre Dame was pulling ahead.

At the start of the 4th, the score was 35-18. PSU needed three scores to go ahead.

With 12:55 left, they connected on a 17 yard TD pass to bring the score to 35-25. They had time. Could they pull it off?

The quarter was a defensive battle. ND coudn't put it away and PSU couldn't come back. But with 2:17 left, PSU heaved a deep pass to a wide open receiver for a 44 yard TD! They were within three, but they had to make a stop of defense.

They couldn't do it.

Final Score: Notre Dame 35, Penn St. 32

I can't wait to see that foursome in action. I have a feeling Carpenter will be peacin' out this year, so Ford could start as a redshirt freshman. He'll have all the help he needs to be successful.

Thanks for the other insight as well. You know...I haven't noticed what you noticed. The only thing that gets me is when I promise to not redshirt a player, but he never makes it on the field so they game automatically redshirts him.

I've gotten good results from promises and Richardson was the only player to do that to me. Oh well. You never know with this game .

And about the players transfering here...makes sense. Thanks.

I'm getting sick of losing in these bowl games. I need to catch a break!

Players Leaving

Let's see the damage.

Okay...I can live with this. It sucks losing my entire offensive line at once but I can deal with it. There is one good thing about having nothing to look forward to in recruiting: You can spend a ton of time convincing players to come back.

Starter

G Jeremy Johnson. 6'3", 291 lbs. JR. 87 OVR (Pro Draft)
T Josh Yancey. 6'4", 301 lbs. JR(RS). 87 OVR (Pro Draft)
RB Derek Tate. 5'10", 185 lbs. JR(RS). 86 OVR (Pro Draft)
OLB Mitchell Jacobs. 6'2", 236 lbs. JR(RS). 92 OVR (Pro Draft)

C Jake McCargo. 6'5", 325 lbs. SR. 75 OVR
G Isaiah Butler. 6'3", 327 lbs. SR(RS). 83 OVR
T Bo Harris. 6'4", 306 lbs. SR(RS). 82 OVR

DE Brad Bly. 6'6". 260 lbs. SR(RS). 83 OVR
MLB James Cross. 6'3", 227 lbs. SR(RS). 90 OVR
CB Matt Edwards. 6'0", 169 lbs. SR. 92 OVR
CB Russell Mason. 6'2", 197 lbs. SR. 89 OVR

CB Alex Wilson. 5'11", 195 lbs. SR(RS). 86 OVR
SS Derek Hutchinson. 6'0", 186 lbs. SR(RS). 82 OVR

Results

I want all four of those players to come back. Everyone gets the maximum amount of time. I start off with Jacobs who was just dominant for us this year.

Oh great. I spent 65 minutes with him and he tells me he wants to prove to everyone that he can play in the pros. Thanks for nothin'.

Next up is the offensive line guys. Both get 65 minutes. Jeremy Johnson tells me that everyone has an opinion but he hasn't decided yet. But Yancey is convinced that he has a lot left to do in school. Yay!

Back to Johnson. I spent another 65 minutes with him. And he leaves! Oh boy.

So finally, I get to Tate. I decide to spent 30 minutes with him since I don't need him all that much. He tells me that he's weighed all his options, and is staying in school. Nice.

G Jeremy Johnson. 6'3", 291 lbs. JR. 87 OVR (Pro Draft) - Leaving
T Josh Yancey. 6'4", 301 lbs. JR(RS). 87 OVR (Pro Draft) - Staying
RB Derek Tate. 5'10", 185 lbs. JR(RS). 86 OVR (Pro Draft) - Staying
OLB Mitchell Jacobs. 6'2", 236 lbs. JR(RS). 92 OVR (Pro Draft) - Leaving

Cool. Well if this year is any indication, it might be tougher than I thought. You start out with better players interested in you but have much harder competition to deal with.

The games absolutely have a better feel after the patch. I run the ball heavily though, which is not what most teams do, to the point that I'll probably institute some house rules next season requiring me to pass more often. I think with my running style the pursuit angles are better but still not great, and when i break runs to the outside I get 40 yard runs that *maybe* should have been 25 yard runs with better pursuit angles...

The passing game though feels a ton better, I'm really liking it. Punt/kick coverage improvements are excellent as well and limit the necessity for other potential house rules on special teams.

The only complaint I think is that the CPU playcalling sometimes sucks, not using timeouts in the final minute optimally, and calling ridiculously bad plays when trying to mount a final comeback drive, etc. But not gamebreaking IMO.
