Bears Roster

Here is a look at the Bears' roster before training camp. I think they did a good thing in signing Testaverde to allow Boller to develop.

2004 Preseason

2004 Preseason

Game 1
Tampa Bay at New York Jets

The Jets defeated the defending Super Bowl Champions, 19-16. Doug Brien converted a 25 yard field goal with no time remaining to start the preseason off on the right foot. Hoping to make big plays this season, the team did just that. With :22 left, Tampa Bay was attempting to move into field goal range for the win. The Jets called a safety blitz, and Derek Pagel walloped Brad Johnson, who fumbled the ball. The ball was recovered by Alan Harper. Shortly after, two straight completions, Brien ended the game for the Jets.

Offensively, Pennington had a tough night against the Bucs’ D, but kept the game tied up when he left. Pennington finished, 8-16 and 94 yards passing. Tim Rattay came in mid way through the third quarter and was effective, hitting on 8 of 13 passes for 94 yards. Newcomer, David Terrell and Tyrone Calico each caught 4 passes to lead the Jets.

Defensively the Jets were led by Sam Cowart. Cowart had 11 tackles for the game, 1 sack and a forced fumble. Second year tackle, Ty Warren also was a force, finishing with 7 tackles.

Injuries were minor, Kareem McKenzie suffered only a sprained knee and will miss a week or two. Victor Hobson did separate his shoulder and will miss up to four weeks. Both should be back for opening day.

Game 2
New York Jets at New York Giants

The Jets came into there game with the Giants hoping to get a look at a lot of their second team and players trying to earn a roster spot players. The only thing they saw however, was a Giant team geared up and ready to take it to them.

The Giants stomped the Jets by a score of 35-3. The Giants quickly jumped out to a 35-0 lead, as Kerry Collins lit up the secondary for four first half touchdowns. The Jets pass defense gave up 309 yards most coming in the first half. Free agent acquisition, Alex Molden was victimized early by Amani Toomer, giving up 5 passes in only 15 defensive pass plays. Rookie Dana McAllister and Jacoby Shepherd outplayed Molden, who was figured in to be the starter when the Jets signed him. McAllister and Shepherd did not give up a pass reception in the 31 plays they were in combined.

On offense Tim Rattay got the start, and moved the team very little. Although he completed 7 of 10 passes, the plays were all short, totaling 42 yards. The one play Rattay did go downfield he was intercepted. John Navarre (fighting for the 3rd QB spot) played in the second half, and had little success as well. Navarre completed 10 of 18 passes for 92 yards. Chad Morton had a good game running the ball, carrying 11 times for 56 yards. Morton is looking to beat out Jordan for the HB2 position.

The Jets did suffer an injury to rookie guard, Paul Harker. Harker is expected to miss the next four weeks with a strained abductor muscle. Harker is expected to make the team, but his injury now gives the Jets the option to move him to the IR list to free up a roster spot if the choose to do so. Tackle Kareem McKenzie is listed as probable for next week with a sprained knee, but will likely be deactivated once again to give him time to recover. Linebacker Victor Hobson will continue to be out with a separated shoulder.

The Jets have Atlanta at home next week. The Falcons have struggled in preseason this year dropping their first two. The Falcons are still reeling due to the suspension of their star quarterback, Michael Vick.

Game 3
Atlanta Falcons at New York Jets

The Jets looked to get back on the winning track after their hometown rivals embarrassed them, however, the Falcons would not let that be the case. In fact, the Falcons beat up on the Jets who had no excuses this week.

The Falcons would beat up on the Jets in all areas of the field in route to their 38-19 victory. The Falcons outgained the Jets 462-358, outrushed the Jets 165-110, and caused more turnovers, 4-3.

The Falcons have three young quarterbacks battling for the first string position, Alonzo Temes from Boston College, Phillip Rivers from NC State and Louis Hawkins from SMU. Temes got the start this week and led the Falcons to a 10-6 halftime lead.

Chad Pennington played the first two series for the Jets. Pennington led the Jets on a 7-play, 56 yard drive that resulted in a fumble deep in Falcon territory. He than came back with an 11-play, 76 yard drive that resulted in a field goal. Pennington would than turn it over to Tim Rattay, and that is when the game got exciting. Rattay would continue to move the Jets, but once again the Jets would have to settle for a field goal and behind by 4 going into the half.

Following halftime, the Jets left their defense in the locker room, as rookie free agent quarterback, Phillip Rivers diced the Jets’ up. Rivers would complete 14 of 18 passes for 206 yards and 3 touchdowns. The Jets could only muster up 13 more points, 6 coming on the only bad throw that Rivers made and rookie cornerback, Dana McAllister’s first interception and touchdown.

Following the game, Coach Ed McGregor looked like a coach who was just whipped. “We played as poor tonight as I have seen. We were able to do little on both sides of the ball. Some of these guys are really going to have to show me something at Dallas next week or we will have to find players that can.”

The Jets had better hope that Pennington has what it takes this season. Rattay has not been that effective in the preseason, and the Jets are unsure of what to do with the third string quarterback position.

The only injuries the Jets had to report was CB, Jacoby Shepherd injured his thumb, but is expected to play next week.

The Jets travel to Dallas next week for their final preseason game. Following that game the Jets will have to trim their roster down to 53.

Game 4
New York Jets at Dallas

The Jets got themselves in a hole early, 17-3, but rallied to defeat the Cowboys 30-27, and finish the preseason at 2-2.

Pennington finished the game 0-6, but Coach McGregor said he is not concerned about Chad. “Chad did some good things this spring. He is ready to go.” Pennington finished the season completing just 13 of 27 passes for 177 yards.

The running game was strong, finishing with 208 yards on 30 carries. Both Martin and Jordan broke long runs of 44 and 84 respectively. The line and backs look ready to go this season.

Quarterback Tim Rattay, gave the team some more confidence in him, completing 11 of 21 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown. The touchdown pass was a 13 yarder to Jerald Sowell that would pull the Jets to within 3, 27-24.

On defense the Jets were led by Sam Cowart once again. Cowart finished the game with 12 tackles and a sack. Tyrone Carter had 7 tackles and an interception. The Jets pass D got off to a rough start but finished allowing Dallas to 201 yards through the air.

Rookie Jonathan Vilma had 4 tackles and a sack and Boss Bailey also contributed with a sack, as the Jets are hoping their last two first round picks can continue to make the big plays.

The Jets open at home next week against the Buffalo Bills. It looks as if the Jets will be without Santana Moss and Tackle, Kareem McKenzie. Guard Paul Harker and defensive tackle Jason Ferguson are listed as questionable. Bryan Thomas, Jacoby Shepherd and Victor Hobson are listed as probable.

The New York Jets had planned for a 70,000 seat stadium to be constructed on Manhattan's Upper West Side. The Stadium was to be constructed by a top quality construction firm at an estimated cost of $500 million. It is believed that the Jets' Organization was going to contribute $125 million while the rest came from the public.

The plans included a retractable roof with a grass playing field. Although many Jet officials have said they do not plan on using the roof and altering the games because of the weather, they feel that the retractable roof will make the plans more appealing to the public for the use of other events besides the minimum of ten football games.

The Stadium will include many features that do not exist in their current stadium including 150 luxury suites and 10,000 club seats, sit down restaurants and entertainment along with methods of mass transportation due to the difficulties it could be to travel in New York City.

The Jets released a statement earlier today, "Although we are disappointed with the results to begin construction of a new stadium on Manhattan's Upper West Side, rest assure this issue is not a dead one. The people of New York deserve a new facility and we will go back to work and put this issue back up to vote next season."

We did something in week 1 we did not do last season until week 8, got a win. We did not play that well, but made the plays when they counted. Beginning in the fourth quarter with the special teams. On a Hunter Smith punt, Buffalo return man Troy Vincent caught and returned the ball from his own 10-yard line. Jets' Jacoby Shepherd hit Vincent and caused a fumble. Free Agent acquisition, Travis Claridge picked up the ball and scooted 10 yards for the touchdown. Then, the defense got involved when an interception was returned for a touchdown by stong safety, Tyrone Carter. That play put the Jets ahead 21-10, which would be short lived. On the ensuing kickoff Bills' rookie return man, Joey Thomas returned the ball all the way back for a touchdown, Buffalo converted the two-point play and that is the way the game would finish 21-18.

The Jets got out injury free and are awaiting the return of right tackle Kareem McKenzie and defensive tackle Jason Ferguson.

The Jets travel to St Louis next week. The Rams are coming off a week 1 win against Arizona 22-13.

Week 2 Jets @ St. Louis

What a Waste!

Hempstead - The Jets did everything they needed to do today to come into St.Louis and beat a good team. They ran the ball well, stopped the run, controlled their passing game, were +1 in the turnover margin and controlled the clock. However, the Jets could not put the ball in the end zone enough (settled for four field goals under 40 yards), and allowed St. Louis to make a huge play early in the 4th quarter.

Leading 23-14, early in the 4th quarter, the Jets had the ball on St. Louis' 49 yardline. Pennington dropped back to pass on 3rd and 9 and threw a poor ball that was intercepted by Adam Archuleta and returned 69 yards for a touchdown. That play would be the key play in the game.

The Jets would get the ball back in move down the field, but once again settle for a Doug Brien field goal with 6:49 left. The two would exchange 3 and outs before St. Louis got the ball with 2:35 left.

The Rams would put together a 9 play, 58 yard drive that resulted in a Shaun McDonald touchdown reception from Kurt Warner with :44 seconds left. The Jets, out of timeouts, would not threaten the Rams at all who pulled out the 29-26 win.

Chad Pennington threw the ball 58 times completing only 28. You have to wonder why Coach McGregor abandoned the running game in the 4th quarter despite the lead. McGregor stated, "We felt they had stopped the run well in the second half, and our only option to sustain drives in the second half was to work the short passing game. Their defense played us extremely well in the red zone, and that was the difference today."

Chad Pennington struggled to score touchdowns today, a reason why McGregor went to Testaverde last season. Pennington moved the team down the field all game with ease, however, drives continued to stall in the red zone and the Jets let one get away today.

The Jets travel to Indianapolis to face another high powered offense next week. The Jets should be able to move the ball once again, and if they do not convert in the red zone, the Jets will fall to 1-2.

Week 3 Jets@Indianapolis

Win In Indy!!!

Indianapolis - The New York Jets won perhaps their biggest game under the Marra/McGregor regime defeating the Colts 29-26. The win moved the Jets to 2-1 and dropped the Colts to 1-2.

The Colts were a disppointing 9-7 last season, but are still dangerous, offensively. The Colts put up 417 yards in total offense, but could only muster 3 touchdowns. The Jets defense played a bend but do not break defense. They did not force any turnovers but seemed to make a big play when it was needed, such as a sack or a stop behind the line of scrimmage on 3rd and 1.

Pennington played an excellent game, making the big throws and controlling the clock when necessary, including the game winning drive. With 5:25 remaining the Jets were down 26-21. Vanderjagt had just missed a 50-yard field goal that would have put the Colts up by 8. The Jets took over at their 40 and began an 11-play, 60 yard drive that took up 4:56 of the clock and was capped by a 3 yard Curtis Martin rushing touchdown. The drive was executed as well as it possibly could have. The Jets drove the field, used the clock up and scored a touchdown, followed by a 2-point conversion to put them up by 3, with 29 seconds left.

Pennington was 15 of 28 for 260 yards and two touchdowns. The running game still leaves some to be desired but looks to be heading in the right direction. The team started JP Machado (backup center) at right guard in stead of rookie, Quinn Christensen. Christensen had started the previous two games, and has not been as effective as the team feels they need from the position.

On defense the team was once again led by Cowart and Bailey. The two combined for 22 solo tackles and a sack. The Jets are home for the 2-1 Ravens next week. The Jets are favored by one point.

The Jets lost reserve fullback BJ Askew for the next 4 weeks with a strained back. Lamont Jordan will see some plays at the fullback position if necessary.

Pennington Shines!!!

Hempstead, NY - One day after the Jets put up one of its most dazzling offensive numbers in two years, you can sense the team feeling as good as it has since they were in the playoffs two years ago.

Yesterday, the Jets needed overtime to defeat the Baltimore Ravens 20-17. The win moved the Jets to 3-1, and into first place for the first time since the end of the 2002 regular season. In their victory the Jets amassed 468 yards in total offense against one of the best defenses in the league. They only managed to get into the endzone once however, and had to rely on Doug Brien to boot six field goals.

Pennington played near perfect ball, completing 20-26 passes, for 315 yards, while under pressure all afternoon. The pressure the Ravens brought did force an interception by linebacker, Ed Hartwell that led to a Ravens field goal. The Jets had a pair of 100-yard receivers with Chrebet and Moss. Moss has now had back to back 100-yard receiving games since coming back from his preseason injury. Curtis Martin handled the football 34 times, for 96 yards. Most of Martin's runs were extremely tough ones against the stout front seven of Baltimore.

On defense the Jets played there best game of the season, allowing a mere 234 yards to the Ravens. They held Jamal Lewis to 85 yards rushing.

However, despite the numbers the Jets nearly lost the game. They needed Doug Brien to hit a 22-yard field goal as time expired to force overtime. The Jets ventured into Baltimore's red zone six times, coming away with only 1 touchdown and 5 field goals. Part of the reason that McGregor went to Testaverde last season was because of the lack of touchdowns produced under Pennington.

McGregor said, "It is a little troublesome to be down there that many times, and have to settle for field goals. We realize we moved the ball effectively against a very good defense, and yet we needed overtime to win this one. It should not have had to come to this. We still have a lot of work to do to get to where we want to be, and I will not let them celebrate this victory this week."

The Jets reported no injuries this week. The team continues to monitor the transaction logs, looking for a player to play the right guard position in the event Machado does not solidify himself there.

Tiger Whipped

Tiger Whipped!

Cincinnati, OH - The Jets arrived in Cincinnati high off their victory over Baltimore last week to take on the Benglas, losers of three straight.

The Bengals blew out the Jets 34-7, in perhaps the most lopsided game under the Jets new regime. The Bengals outplayed the Jets in all areas. The running game of the Jets floundered for a mere 71 yards, on 26 carries, while the defense gave up 221 yards.

Kevin Mawae was frustrated with the performance, "We just got our butts kicked, we are a better football team than this, I don't know what else to say."

McGregor said that all week the staff was stressing to them that they were going to have to be up and ready for the Bengals, that this team has been struggling, and are fighting for their season, if we the Jets were not ready they would be in for a long day. Well, apparently the message did not get across to the team. McGregor even shaked up the lineup to try and spark them. Second year defensive tackle, Ty Warren, who has been struggling was benched for Cornelius Griffin, a move that did not work out well. The Benglas attacked the middle of the Jets defense led by their rookie center, Nick Seitze, who was blowing Griffin and Ferguson off the ball all day.

This was the second week in a row the offensive line struggled to provide running lanes for Curtis Martin. The Jets are combing the transaction wires hoping that a right guard becomes available. If not, they may have to work around Machado, or the rookie, Christensen. On top of that starting left guard, Travis Claridge is out for the next game against New England.

On the defesive side of the ball the Jets will be without their playmaking safety Tyrone Carter. The Jets will move McGraw from Free Safety to Strong Safety and start Derek Pagel at the Free spot.

The Jets are home for the 2-3 Patriots, believe it or not the Jets are a 1 point favorite.

Jets Ground Pats!!!

The Jets defeated the Patriots 33-20 yesterday using the combination of a powerful ground game and key passes that kept drives going. The running game was questionable this season, and with left guard, Travis Claridge out, there were even more questions. However, the line provided plenty of running room, as Martin (21 carries, 80 yards), and Jordan (12-54) gained valuable yards and consumed the clock leading to a Jets victory. Pennington played a solid game, completing 21 of 32 passes for 230 yards and two touchdowns. Martin, Becht and Moss each caught 6 passes for the game.

Special Teams played a big part. Chad Morton was excellent on his returns, taking a punt back 18 yards, and two kickoffs back for a 26.5 yard average. Those returns helped shorten the field for the Jets offense which scored on its first 6 possessions.

Defensively there are growing concerns about the Jets pass defense. It seems week after week quarterbacks are putting up big numbers. Now, we do not want to grow to concerned because a win is a win, however, this pace cannot continue. Brady threw for nearly 400 yards on the afternoon. The Jets pass defense is ranked 30th in the league in pass yards and tied for 27th in sacks with just 10. There is growning concern around Jets camp, and there should be good reason. Last season when the running game was struggling in the beginning of the year, McGregor cut, starting guard Brent Smith. Now with the pass D struggling you wonder if McGregor is thinking the same after his post game comments. "It is disappointing to be thinking of the negatives after we just beat a good football team, but, I do not think I can watch another performance on pass coverage like that again."

Free agent aquisistion, Alex Molden has been disappointing in his first six starts, and second round pick, Dana McAllister has not developed as quickly as the Jets had hoped, leaving the Jets with few options.

There were no reported injuries, and the good news is that Travis Claridge, and Tyrone Carter are expected back for next weeks game against Cleveland.

Shakeup?

Hempstead, NY - Coach McGregor and the staff brought in some defensive backs to take a look at to possibly add to the roster. Jason Webster and Denard Walker came in for a tryout. Both are cornerbacks and have not taken a snap this season. Webster was an unrestricted free agent from San Francisco who did not receive much attention despite the fact that he started most of the games he played in and intercepted 8 balls during those four seasons. Walker was released from Minnesota during the off season. Walker was the team's starting left cornerback before suffering a season ending injury last year. The team also invited in free agent safety, Donnie Nickey. Nickey has not played a snap in the NFL after being drafted in the 5th round of the 2003 draft by Tennessee. Nickey is an ideal free safety, something McGregor feels is a weakness with his team, with McGraw and Pagel.

Jets Sign Webster

Hempstead, NY - After yesterday's workout the Jets were impressed enough to sign cornerback Jason Webster. Webster is expected to be inactive for this weeks game, but could find himself playing the dime back next week against Buffalo. In order to make room for Webster the Jets waived Jamie Henderson. Henderson has not been active at all this season after failing to beat out Jacoby Shepherd or Dana McAllister.

The other shakeup in the secondary was the Jets moving Alex Molden from the starting group to the nickel back. Molden has not adjusted to the Jets system yet. McGregor did state to Molden before signing him that he could be used as both a nickel back and as a starter. Molden was obviously disappointed by the decision but stated he looked forward to his new role of playing nickel back and covering the slot receiver.

Brown Sacks

Brown Sacks

Hempstead, NY - A poor fourth quarter by the Jets on offense and defense resulted in a 28-25 loss in Cleveland yesterday. Chad Pennington was looking sharp through three quarters with the Jets leading 17-14. Then, a critical pass was intercepted by Cleveland's Dre' Bly changing the momentum of the game. With the Jets leading and moving deep into Cleveland territory Bly timed a Pennington pass perfectly intercepting the ball on his own 15 and returning it 29 yards. Cleveland would keep the momentum going and punch it in to take a 21-17 lead. Cleveland would score once more before the Jets made the game look closer than it was with a late touchdown.

Once again the Jets running game was not there. Curtis Martin who is struggling carried the ball only 14 times for 45 yards. Jordan did not fare much better, going 11 carries for 35 yards. The stat line for Pennington looks good, 16 for 25, 278 yards and two touchdowns, however, the interception is the throw he remembers. "I let one get away from me at a critical point of the game. I let my team down today. I don't know what else to say." Kevin Mawae added, "we made too many mistakes to win the game today, this is not on Chad, he played a great game. Perhaps if we could have gotten our running game going today, Chad would not have had to make that throw."

Defensively the Jets woes continues. The Jets gave up 373 yards to the Browns, who have been averaging under 300 yards in total offense during the season. The Jets did get some pressure on Couch this week, but still not enough. Couch who has struggled at time this season, completed 19 of 26 for 249 yards and 2 touchdowns. Although the Browns running game averaged just 3.4 yards per carry, it was effective, as the Browns used 7 different players to carry the ball. Jacoby Shepherd was effective in his first start at cornerback, he shut out his receivers, while Molden struggled once again at the nickel position.

Perhaps the Jets can find their winning ways in Buffalo next week. The Bills are 2-4-1 on the season. The Jets defeated the Bills on opening day, 21-18. The Jets got through the game with no injuries to report.

Thanks to those out there who have read my thread about my Jets Dynasty. It took longer than expected to reach the 1,000 mark but I feel good about my dynasty. I have been at it for 8 months now, and I really enjoy it. I hope some of you readers do as well.

Road Weary

Hempstead, NY - The Jets dropped their fourth game out of five on the road this season yesterday to the Buffalo Bills, 15-10. With the score 13-10, and 2:15 remaining the Jets got the ball on their own 5 yard line. The Jets figured they needed to go 65 yards to set up a game tying field goal. They would not even get that opportunity. On the very first play, Pennington dropped back to pass, was pressured and took off for an apparent 4 yard run, setting up a second and six at the 9 yard line at the two minute warning. Only, there was a holding penalty called in the end zone resulting in a safety. Buffalo went up by five, 15-10 and got the ball back to run out the clock. For the Jets it was another tough road loss.

Offensively Chad Pennington was very effective in the rain, completing 16 of 24 passes for 213 yards, 1 touchdown and no interceptions. The Jets tried to pound the ball with Curtis Martin, as he carried the ball 20 times for 61 yards. Wayne Chrebet provided the teams big play, when he caught a short pass and raced 55 yards for a touchdown.

Defensively Sam Cowart provided the run support in his old stadium, finishing with 12 tackles for the day. The Jets used a variety of blitzes on the day that resulted in three sacks, one for Jonathan Vilma, and one for Jon McGraw that resulted in a fumble that Buffalo recovered.

The Jets get to come home, where they are 3-0 next week to face the surprising 5-2 Steelers.

2005 Early Thoughts

HALFWAY REPORT

We have reached the halfway mark, and although our record of 4-4 is 3 games better than last season's 1-7, some of the same problems still exist.

We still lack a pass defense, despite the additions of cornerback Alex Molden, and rookie linebacker Jonathan Vilma, we are ranked last in passing yards allowed. Molden has been benched in favor of Jacoby Shepherd. The pass rush has been minimal at best. Abraham and Ellis have managed just 5.5 sacks combined. That would not even get them into the top-10 pass rushers at this time. Second year defensive tackle Ty Warren has struggled this season, even to the point where he was benched for a game in favor of veteran reserve defensive tackle Cornelius Griffin. On the positives, Sam Cowart and Boss Bailey have had great seasons. The two are near the top in tackles, and have made some key plays at big moments of the games. It looks as though the Jets have established a solid group of linebackers this season, something that was not there last season. Now, the questions begin as to what to do next year.

Five of the current eleven defensive starters are scheduled to be free agents at the end of the season if we elect not to negotiate new contracts. They are Shaun Ellis, Jason Ferguson, John Abraham, Tyrone Carter and Jacoby Shepherd. Out of those five Shepherd is the only one looking for a near minimal deal. In this age of the salary cap, and the position the Jets are in next season some tough decisions will have to be made. The early thoughts are to let Ferguson go, and if Carter's demands do not lessen to say good bye to him as well. We would like to keep Abraham despite his last two seasons of mediocre play. His contract will probably be somewhere in the neighborhood of $5 million per season. With Shaun Ellis one of the thoughts is to franchise him, sign him and trade him if we can make a deal that is friendly enough to warrant that, otherwise it is likely he will be a unrestricted free agent. So that means it looks as though we will have to replace three starters along with getting some needed help at the cornerback position.

On the offensive side of the ball things have gone better than expected. Pennington has played pretty good thus far. His numbers are a big turn around from last season, however, he has still struggled at times in the red zone getting the team into the end zone. That can be directly related to the running game. The running game has struggled, and it is not just the offensive line's fault. Curtis Martin has lost a step, but he is still more than capable of being the everydown back. The Jets still lack a right guard, vacated by the departure of Victor Riley to free agency. The receivers have played well. Moss has been a game breaker since his return in week 3, while Chrebet himself has made more than his share of big plays. Second year receiver, Tyrone Calico continues to develop, although he does not look like a superstar in the making, he looks to be more than capable of playing everydown if needed.

On the starting offensive side of the ball only Anthony Becht will be a free agent, and looking at his decreasing numbers, will probably have the opportunity to walk. The other question will be whether to offer Lamont Jordan a new contract. Jordan has not played that well behind Martin, but with Martin's ability on the decline, do the Jets have the option of letting a reliable backup go? I would say probably not at this time. It appears that if the Jets can find a starting right guard, the Jets would be a step ahead. Some other things to consider are Santana Moss. Moss is scheduled to be a free agent after the 2005 season, his demands will likely be high, as his skills are assessed at the top of the league. So, the Jets will obviously have to decide if his deal will fit in with the Jets plans, otherwise we will have to think about a replacement in this year's draft to give him time to develop.

Despite this, we are sitting at 4-4 and in first place in our division. We have 5 of our next 8 games at home in the second half. We feel if we can finish 6-2 or even 5-3 down the stretch the playoffs are a stong possibility.

Jets defeat Steelers

Jets Defeat Steelers

Hempstead, NY - A day after the Jets defeated Pittsburgh 14-3, the team was given the next off until Thursday. The Jets entered their bye week at 5-4, and a share of first place with New England. Last season the team entered the bye in week 5 at 0-4, it was then that McGregor and his staff started to contemplate changes necessary to turn the season around. They really never did, finishing 6-10. This season the bye comes at a good time. The team knows they need to make some adjustments if they want to make the playoffs, and they will have a healthy roster when they come back to begin a three game road trip.

Yesterday against the Steelers the Jets defense had its finest game of the season. The D, held the Steelers to 3 points, 245 yards, and forced 3 turnovers. John Abraham was named defensive player of the week. Abraham collected 3 sacks, 3 hurries and 3 tackles for the game. Is it a coinscentent that the Jets opened up negotiations with Abraham's agent today?

Offensively the Jets did what they had to do. The Jets only attempted 22 passes on the day, completing 14 for 159 yards. What was impressive was the endurance of Curtis Martin. Martin carried the ball 36 times for 109 yards against the punishing Steel defense. He also caught 6 passes for 89 yards. No doubt the amount of work that Martin got was because of the bye week coming up.

The big play came from the special teams. After the Steelers went up 3-0, rookie Erict Pruitt returned the short kickoff 85 yards for the go ahead score. For Pruitt it was the play the Jets envisioned from him when they selected him in the 3rd round of this year's draft.

The Jets had no injuries to report and will begin preparing for Miami at the end of the week.
