RIP Blanche.

Usually, in these types of posts, I'm surprised by how old the person was (as they never seem to be that old to me). In this case, I figured she was much, much older than 76.

I guess she was only in her 50s during the Golden Girls?

So, checking wikipedia... She was only 51 when the series started in 1985.

And, interestingly, Betty White was the oldest of the Golden Girls.

I read some where once that Golden Girls was the most watched show on tv with all of the reruns on Lifetime.

I'd believe that, it used to be on at least 6 times a day. 2 in the morning, 2 in the afternoon, 2 at night.

Betty White better be careful next year. Getty left the world in 2008, Arthur in 2009, and now McClanahan in 2010. 2011 has its eyes on you, Betty.

Getty actually was a year younger than Arthur, who's mother she played on Golden Girls. How funny. I'm currently running through Boston Legal and loving Betty White's character. That lady knows funny.

I'm not going to link to it here, but you guys need to google the gif of Rue from the 60s (it appears) wearing a front-clasping bathing suit and sneezing.

Am I the only one that has no memory of the follow-up to Golden Girls called Golden Palace?

The Golden Palace - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I feel like I watched all of these shows, so I'm surprised that I have no recollection of it, at all.

Yeah, I remember it. It was pretty terrible. By herself, I didn't think the Dorothy character was very interesting, but without her, the show wasn't entertaining at all.

a show like the Golden Girls would never even get a shot on a major network today

I think I know the gif you're talking about (a guy on the CUSA board has it in his sig), and I'm 98% sure it's not Rue McClanahan. I can't remember the actress' name off the top of my head, but it definitely wasn't her...

Edit: He said it was a woman named Margaret Nolan and the clip was from a movie titled Carry On Girls...

The follow up, "Golden Showers" was really a drizzly affair.

I missed the SNL where Betty White hosted, but heard it was the funniest episode in years. The replay just started about 20 minutes ago, and I've laughed more already tonight than I have during any episode the last few years.

I barely remembered it, but for a while they had reruns of that on Lifetime also and I saw an episode or two. Bea Arthur wasn't on it (as Pumpy said), and they added Cheech Marin and Don Cheadle. It was pretty weird to see them on it, but it was not funny.

And Margaret Nolan was the actress used for the painted girl in the titles & ads for Goldfinger. She played Bond's masseuse in the actual movie.

The Carry On films are actually pretty famous in their own right, think Benny Hill humor in feature length.
