More Songs Featuring Other Artists

I've noticed more & more frequently on my XMRadio that the artist performing the song also includes a "Featuring" another artist. A glance at the Top 10 on iTunes shows 5 out of the top ten also have songs that feature another artist. While singers contributing on another album is nothing new... are we just in the age where there is more desire/incentive for recognition, or did something happen contractually that caused this trend?

My guess is that singer A is very popular, JZ, etc... and singer B is an up and comer on singer A's label. Singer A does a song with Singer B to help them get notoriety and air time, thus making $ for their label.

Collaborations are a nice change of pace for a song, especially in hip-hop. You can hear Artist A for the first two verses and then Artist B finishes with the last verse... Forever by Drake? Featuring Kanye, Wayne, AND Eminem? That's a ridiculous all-star cast of performers for their genre (please hold your opinion on those guys you old curmudgeons).

I think it really started to take off when hip-hop artist figured out the way to break through was to do the rap part and then have some singer come in for the chorus.

I think this is something that's always been the norm in hip hop and as that genre has infiltrated the pop airwaves it's become the norm throughout radio music.

The music industry is not what it use to be... the internet has pretty much rendered labels useless. I believe Hollywood will likely being following a similar path once technology allows people to film their own movies.

Sorry I thought I would add that.
