San Diego: Where Do I Eat?

I'll be in San Diego for a few days in August and would like to sample some of the cuisine there. Price doesn't matter at all, but I would like a good variety of cultural foods. However, if the variety is not great in San Diego, I would lean towards most meals being Mexican food.

So where do I eat?

Stay away from Anthony's Fish Grotto on the bay. Terrible, overpriced tourist trap.

I like the Chicken McNuggets at this place called McDonald's, but I'm not sure if the one in San Diego is still open.

There's a good variety of food in San Diego, the problem is, they are not located close to each other.

Old Town Mexican Cafe - In Old Town
Poncis - Mexican food - Off of Adams Ave, parking sucks though (Kind of close to the stadium)
Pancake House - Poway
The Omelet Factory - Santee & La Mesa (I like the Santee one better)
Ruth's Chris - They have a couple in San Diego (La Jollaish & Downtown I think)
Phil's BBQ - Point Loma (Near the Sports Arena)
Filippi's Pizza - All over the place
Cotija's - Mexican Food - All over the place
Alberto's - Mexican Food - All over the place
D.Z. Akin's - La Mesa near the college off the 8 freeway

Just depends on where you're staying on how easy or quickly it is to get to those places.

Our must go places anytime we're in Diego:

Wings n Things There are a few but we'd go to the one in Mira Mesa - great breadsticks and wings. We usually combine hot and BBQ sauce.

Pat and Oscars There are several, the one we'd go to was in the Mira Mesa area - Oh, the breadsticks... yumm

Chicken Plus Greek Don't know where you're staying but this is in Escondido which is north of San Diego - small family restaurant, really good food. We mostly order salads and chicken though.

In n Out - absolutely must stop. Best burgers.EVER.

I remember when that happened. It was my 13th birthday. Needless to say, I did not have McDonalds that day.

Old Town Mexican Cafe - In Old Town

If this is the place I went to when I was in San Diego, I cannot endorse it highly enough, it was FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC. However, they use lard in their cooking, which is probably why it is so FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC.

That's what makes it taste good. As long as you don't eat it every day, you should be ok.

The two McDonald's that are closest to my office are both closed for some kind of construction -- I thought that was pretty strange.

Rock Bottom Brewery – The Triple Chocolate Stout Cheesecake is worth driving to San Diego alone for.
Dicks Last Resort – Great ribs and you need to try yourself a Bonerz. Some people don’t get their schtick, but we thought it was a pretty cool place.
Richard Walker’s Pancake House – One of the best breakfasts I’ve had for a long time, they give you a ton of food and the bacon is something else.
Top of the Hyatt – The best views in all of San Diego.

The problem with Pat and Oscars is the only thing good there nowadays is the breadsticks, all the food I've tried other than the breadsticks has been terrible.

Yeah, the best Italian place I had ever eaten was the original Fillipi's downtown. That was where I had my going-away lunch when left SD.

Do yourself a favor and find some greasy spoon Filipino place. It will blow your mind and your arteries. Go to National City if you can. Very authentic. For more conventional fare, try Hash House A Go Go. Huge portions and very delicious. I've been to the ones in Vegas and I hear that the SD one is even better.

At the risk of throwing out a few Mexican non-chains:

La Puerta in the Gaslamp district. Don't generally like the Gaslamp all that much because of the Company, but LaPuerta is a cool Mexican bar/pub with great taco. I think they have a DJ at some point on the weekend, so you might want to go early.

El Agave in Old Town. It probably isn't going to be the best Mexican food in the few block radius of Old Town, but it has the best tequila selection of just about any restaurant in the country. The food is still really good, but the tequila is the reason to visit.

A couple of other places with good views...George's in La Jolla and any of the restaurants at the Hotel Del on Coronado Island.

Holy cow, that must have been one heck of a well fed team. Man I miss Fosters Freeze and my Snickers milk shake.

Too bad this thread was posted while I was in SD and I didn't see it until I got back. Unlike normal we didn't really research and didn't have the best food experience.
