Yánez Brings Home CL Batter of Month Honor

Jesús Yánez battered Continental League pitchers all April and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around FOOL-X long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 32-year-old Yánez told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 26 games, Yánez hit .417 with 11 home runs, 22 RBIs and scored 29 runs.


Republic League Picks April's Best Batter

Jon Hubbard was declared the Republic League Batter of the Month today. Cleveland's second baseman stroked 33 hits in 108 at-bats for a .306 average in April.

He also hit 6 home runs, drove in 23 and scored 21 runs.

Continental League Announces Top Starter

Jim Cobb's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 4-1 in April, the 27-year-old Alberta hurler has been named Continental League Pitcher of the Month.

He fanned 59 in 47.2 innings, logged an ERA of 0.94 and allowed opponents to hit .178 against him.


Waikiki's Adams RL Top Pitcher

The Republic League announced today that Kenneth Adams has been chosen the league's Pitcher of the Month. The Waikiki starter had everything working for him last month as he glided to a 5-0 record.

In April Adams chalked up a 2.45 ERA in 36.2 innings with 38 strikeouts and 4 walks.

Continental League Names Rookie of Month

Eddie Guest is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Continental League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In April the Havana hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .243 average with 28 hits, no home runs and 8 RBIs.


RL Selects Rookie Star of the Month

Youngster Fernando Pérez emerged as the latest Republic League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Las Vegas deserved the honor, batting .400 with no home runs and 7 runs batted in. Is the month of April a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Pérez enjoy the limelight.

Continental League Announces May's Best Batter

Sergio García of the Banana Sluggers hit .358 in May with 8 home runs, 23 RBIs and 17 runs scored to capture a majority of votes for the Continental League Batter of the Month trophy.

The 41-year-old is in the last year of his contract and will undoubtedly use these numbers to try and bring in a huge pay raise.

In 52 games this season García has batted at a .313 pace with 61 hits and 12 home runs.


Ann Arbor's Yap Bags RL Batting Award

Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 29-year-old Mi-yuan Yap put together a solid offensive month for Ann Arbor and was crowned May's top batter in the Republic League.

He batted .357 with 2 home runs, 15 RBIs and 21 runs scored.



This year Yap is batting .340 with 5 home runs and 29 RBIs.

Pitcher Wins CL Top Pitcher Award

Victor Pitcher hasn't been around the big leagues long enough to know that youngsters shouldn't be winning Continental League Pitcher of the Month. But when you put up numbers like his, you're going to get some notice.

In May the London starter earned a 5-0 mark in 6 starts. He threw 39.1 innings, struck out 39 and compiled a solid 1.37 ERA.

This season Pitcher has compiled a 6-2 mark with a 2.49 ERA in 11 starts.


Cleveland Starter Named RL's #1 Pitcher

Over the past month Fernando Reyes has turned quite a few heads. He's young, talented and able to pitch with the established arms in the Republic League. He proved all that and now he's been named May's Pitcher of the Month.

The rookie for the Cleveland Naps posted 3-0 mark and a 1.99 ERA. In 6 starts he tossed 40.2 innings, permitted 35 hits and fanned 39 batters.

This year Reyes has compiled a 5-0 mark with a 2.37 ERA in 11 starts.

May's Premier Rookie Named by CL

Tommy Key's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Oshawa center fielder has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.

In May he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award.

During the month he hit .253 with 1 double, 1 triple and 8 home runs. Key also scored 15 times and drove in 20 runs.

This year Key has batted at a .228 pace with 41 hits, 11 home runs, 27 RBIs and scored 25 times.

Gregory Blair earned May's Rookie of the Month honors in the Republic League for last month's performance. The boyish Portland second baseman might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Blair hit .305 with 1 home run, 13 RBIs and 11 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

So far this season Blair has gotten 57 hits in 230 at-bats for a .248 batting average with 1 home run. His stats include 16 RBIs and 20 runs scored. He has played in 54 games.

Yánez of Washington CL Batter of the Month

When guys like Washington's Jesús Yánez win Batter of the Month awards, it just makes you feel good. In a productive June, the longtime Continental League veteran toyed with opposing pitchers all month long, collecting 37 hits in 111 at-bats.

The veteran first baseman hit for a .333 batting average and collected 11 home runs, 23 RBIs and 27 runs scored.

This season Yánez has hit at a .359 clip and produced 64 RBI, 28 home runs and 72 runs.


RL's #1 Batter Chosen

The premier hitter in the Republic League in June was Portland right fielder Oscar Norton. For his standout play, he was voted the Batter of the Month.

Norton was selected after batting .261, hitting 11 home runs, scoring 17 runs and driving in 31.

In 82 games this season Norton is batting .259 with 82 hits and 22 home runs. He has scored 44 runs and driven in 59.

CL Pick for Top Pitcher in June is MacDormond

The Continental League Pitcher of the Month honor has been given to Paul MacDormond of Omaha for a superlative month.

"I actually never wanted to be a pitcher," MacDormond told reporters when asked who he credits for his pitching ability. "I was an outfielder until high school and on the third day of tryouts my coach came up and said, 'Son you couldn't hit a lick even if we put it on a tee for ya.' Well, that ticked me off, so I decided if I couldn't hit I wanted to make sure no one else could either and so here I am."

It all turned out for the best as the Omaha starter notched a 4-1 record with a 2.68 ERA last month. He made 6 starts and struck out 43 in 43.2 innings.

Season-to-date MacDormond has rung up 8 wins and 4 losses in 17 appearances. He has an ERA of 3.53 and has fanned 122 batters in 114.2 innings.


Young June's Best Hurler in RL

Veteran Vincent Young put together quite a successful stretch in June for the Waikiki Beach Boys, earning himself the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award.

Young racked up a 5-0 record in 5 starts, posting a 2.95 ERA over 36.2 innings and striking out 50.

Checking out his stats for the season, Young has racked up 10 wins and 4 losses in 14 starts, 3.95 ERA and struck out 127 batters in 95.2 innings.

Havana's Guest CL Rookie of Month

A veritable toddler to the Continental League, Eddie Guest just sewed up the Rookie of the Month trophy for June.

Over the past month the 25-year-old shortstop for Havana hit .283 with 34 hits, no home runs and 8 RBI. He also logged 6 walks and compiled a .315 on-base percentage.

This year Guest is batting .263 with 88 hits and no home runs. He has scored 37 times and has batted in 28 runs.


Pérez Tabbed RL's Top Rookie

Almost everyone agreed -- fans, teammates, peers -- and BNN sportwriters, too -- that Fernando Pérez was worthy of the Republic League Rookie of the Month award.

In the month of June the Las Vegas shortstop was a bigtime threat. The 24-year-old Las Vegas shortstop played in 27 games and hit .304 with 5 doubles, 4 triples and 2 home runs. Pérez also scored 21 times and drove in 17 runs.

A look at his current stats shows Pérez with a .313 average, 2 home runs, 29 RBIs and 54 runs scored. He has played in 81 games.

Yánez Garners CL Batter of the Month Award

Though his face is weathered and his hands are calloused, Jesús Yánez can still get it done in FOOL-X. In fact, the 32-year-old first baseman for Washington was named the Continental League Batter of the Month today after putting up an impressive performance at the plate.

In July he batted .415 with 10 home runs, 27 RBIs and 26 runs scored.

For the year Yánez is batting .371 with 159 hits and 38 home runs. He has scored 98 times and driven in 91.


Hubbard Grabs RL Best Batter Award for July

Jon Hubbard of the Cleveland Naps certainly made a resounding impression on the Republic League pitching corps in July and today reaped the reward as the league's best batter for the period.

The second baseman put up some good offensive figures as he hit .333 with 9 home runs, 26 RBIs and 16 runs scored.

This season Hubbard is hitting at a .272 pace with 24 home runs, 81 RBIs and has scored 68 times.

Bees Fraser July's #1 Pitcher

As Larry Fraser hoisted up the Continental League Pitcher of the Month trophy for July, rumors have already begun to swirl about whether he will leave Omaha once his contract is up at the end of the season.

Fraser put pressure on the Bees to keep him around by posting a 5-0 record and an ERA of 1.00 over 36 innings last month. He also rolled up 36 strikeouts, increasing his value both to Omaha and to every other team in the league.

So far this season Fraser has a record of 8-7 with 112 strikeouts and 34 walks in 132 innings and a 3.34 ERA.


Fernández #1 RL Pitcher in July

The Republic League announced the winner of the Pitcher of the Month Award for July.

It went to Norberto Fernández of Maricopa for his outstanding 5-0 record and 0.68 ERA.

Fernández also chalked up 5 starts, 40 innings and 43 strikeouts.



This year Fernández has posted a record of 9 wins and 6 losses with a 3.60 ERA. He has appeared in 21 games and struck out 137 in 137.2 innings.

CL Names Guest Best Rookie

Eddie Guest sure isn't playing like the rookie he is. The 25-year-old shortstop for Havana is rapping the ball like a seasoned veteran in the Continental League and today he took home the Rookie of the Month Award for his effort.

In July, Guest compiled a .288 batting average. He drove in 12 runs, hit no home runs and scored 17 times.

In 107 games Guest is hitting .269 this season with 120 hits, no home runs, 40 RBIs, 13 walks, .294 OBP and has scored 54 runs.

In July, Chicago second baseman António Ramírez snared the Republic League Rookie of the Month award.

In 23 games he hit .341, collecting 31 hits, 5 home runs, 15 RBIs and 23 runs scored. He also chalked up 13 walks and a .439 OBP.

So far this season Ramírez has 15 home runs and a .265 batting average.

Willis CL Outstanding Batter of the Month

Oshawa first baseman George Willis was certainly bad news for pitchers in the month of August. He wore them out going 35 for 85 and was rewarded with the Continental League Batter of the Month award.

He hit .412 with 6 home runs, 20 RBIs and scored 20 runs.

So far this season Willis has hit .285 with 24 home runs, 60 RBIs and and scored 63 times.


Republic League Selects August's Best Batter

August's outstanding offensive player in the Republic League has been picked and the honor goes to the Waikiki right fielder Miguel Martínez.

He won the award by batting .339, hitting 7 home runs, knocking in 27 runs and scoring 25 times.

Martínez is hitting at a .274 mark this season. His stats show 22 home runs, 88 RBIs and 80 runs scored. He has played 129 games for the Beach Boys.

Victor Pitcher was on cloud nine the entire month of August, capping it off with the Continental League Pitcher of the Month honors.

The London starter was spectacular in 6 starting assignments with 5 wins and no losses, 40 innings pitched, 41 strikeouts and a fine 2.02 ERA.

In 27 starts this season Pitcher has chalked up a 14-9 record and a 2.71 ERA.

The hottest hurler in the Republic League last month was Kenneth Adams of the Waikiki Beach Boys. He caught the attention of everybody in the league with some eye-catching stats, good enough to win the RL Pitcher of the Month.

In August, Adams starred with an impressive 5-0 record. In 5 starts he gave up 27 base hits and struck out 39 in 36.1 innings with a 2.23 ERA.
