Continental League Announces Best Fielder Awards Winners

Good glovemen take pride in their defensive skills. They know they make a difference in baseball. Even on days when they don't get a hit, they feel they can make a difference in the field -- and they do. The Continental League announced its Best Fielder Awards honorees for 2190. This year's recipients are:

CL's Best Rookie Acclaimed

Pedro Ordóñez made quite a name for himself in his rookie year. The Halifax left fielder brought home the 2190 Benny Myers Rookie of the Year Award today in recognition of his performance.

Ordóñez played in 155 games, batted .282, collected 169 hits in 600 at-bats, 20 home runs, 85 RBIs, 116 runs scored, 52 walks and compiled a .345 OBP.


Ortíz Captures 2190 Benny Myers Rookie of the Year Award

Sergio Ortíz was the preeminent newcomer this year in the Republic League and the winner of the 2190 Benny Myers Rookie of the Year Award.

The Toronto second baseman played 142 games this season, hitting for a .302 with 175 hits, 2 home runs, 40 RBIs and 83 runs scored.

Napa Valley Winemakers Hurler CL's Premier Pitcher

The Gabriel Prado Award for 2190 has been presented and the Continental League winner is Esteban Yan of Napa Valley.

"It's always nice to receive an award like this," said Yan. "I just hope I can improve on my performance next year and be in the running again," the Winemakers star told reporters.

Yan excelled with an impressive 17-12 record in 36 starts. In 256.1 innings he yielded 232 hits and 32 walks, while striking out 180 and compiling a fine 2.32 ERA.


Republic League Top Hurler Announced

An old hand in this game, Jorge Herrera of the Omaha Bees silenced critics as well as he silenced the opposition this year by winning the Republic League Gabriel Prado Award.

The 35-year-old starter threw 241.1 innings, notched 197 strikeouts and put up a 21-7 record to claim the coveted award.

Lester Batter Of The Year In CL

All year long Joe Lester feasted on Continental League pitching to the tune of a .318 batting average. For his outstanding efforts he collected the league's Hideaki Tanaka Award for 2190.

The Brooklyn Brownstones center fielder slammed opposing pitchers for 182 hits, 42 home runs and 121 RBIs, while scoring 101 times.

Hammersmith's Lúcio Santos put the wraps on a fine campaign today by winning the 2190 Republic League Hideaki Tanaka Award.

The 33-year-old veteran scorched the opposition with a .355 average, picking up 242 hits, 45 doubles, 7 triples, 30 home runs and 110 RBIs, while scoring 125 runs.
