Rivera Awarded April's CL Top Bat Prize

Today Havana's Rafael Rivera was named the Continental League Batter of the Month for April. He punished CL hurlers hard all month long, collecting 38 hits in 90 at-bats.

With a .422 batting average, 2 home runs, 13 RBIs and 23 runs scored, he was an easy choice.

In April, Germán Díaz beat the baseball like a drum the entire month and netted the Republic League Batter of the Month award.

CL Picks April's Top Pitcher

Veteran Kang-xi Shu put together quite a successful stretch in April for the Plantana Pirates, earning himself the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

Shu racked up a 4-0 record in 5 starts, posting a 1.67 ERA over 37.2 innings and striking out 35.


Fitzgerald Gets RL #1 Pitcher Trophy

The Republic League made it official today -- Keith Fitzgerald of the Las Vegas Wildcats is the Pitcher of the Month. In April he impressed the sportswriters with his domination of league hitters.

Fitzgerald made 5 starts, registered 4 wins and 1 loss with a solid 1.27 ERA. In 35.1 innings he allowed 30 hits, racked up 30 strikeouts, walked 9 and permitted teams to hit .234 against him.

Continental League Names Rookie of Month

Youngster Olímpio Cassar emerged as the latest Continental League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Omaha deserved the honor, batting .333 with no home runs and 10 RBI. Is the month of April a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Cassar enjoy the limelight.


RL Selects Rookie Star of the Month

Joaquín Sosa's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Chicago first baseman has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.

In April he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award.

During the month he hit .323 with 7 doubles, no triples and 7 home runs. Sosa also scored 14 times and drove in 22 runs.

Bernardo Barrón is May's #1 Hitter in CL

Bernardo Barrón was at the top of the hit parade in the Continental League throughout May. For the outstanding month, the talented Manchester left fielder was chosen the Batter of the Month.

He compiled a .470 average with 39 hits, 4 home runs, 17 RBIs and 20 runs scored.

Thus far this year Barrón is batting .424 with 11 home runs, 29 RBIs and 37 runs scored.


May's Premier Batter Announced

Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 29-year-old Norberto Lópes put together a solid offensive month for Chicago and was crowned May's top batter in the Republic League.

He batted .314 with 10 home runs, 24 RBIs and 26 runs scored.



This season Lópes is hitting .263 with 13 home runs.

Gerardo López has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in May and stole away with the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

The Renegades bullpen ace collected 7 saves and 30 strikeouts in 20.2 innings, holding the opposition to a .164 average and posting a 0.00 ERA and a 4-0 record.

This season López has made 28 relief appearances, pitched 32.2 innings and struck out 36 with a record of 6 wins and 1 loss. He has compiled a 0.28 ERA and saved 12 games.


Bullpen Ace RL Premier Pitcher in May

Alfredo García was the anchor in the Chicago bullpen last month and snatched up the Republic League Pitcher of the Month honors for May. The 31-year-old is in the prime of his career and pitching like he intends to stay around baseball for quite some time to come.

He threw 14.2 innings over 13 relief appearances and collected a 3-0 record with 20 strikeouts and 9 saves while etching his 0.61 ERA.

This year García has 14 saves with a 3-1 won-lost mark and 1.11 ERA.

May's Best Rookie Honored by CL

Guillermo Macías earned May's Rookie of the Month honors in the Continental League for last month's performance. The boyish Oshawa left fielder might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Macías hit .394 with 4 home runs, 12 RBIs and 14 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

Thus far this season in 44 games Macías is batting .355 with 5 home runs, 19 RBIs and 20 runs scored. He has 43 hits in 121 at-bats.


Rookie First Baseman Honored by RL

A veritable toddler to the Republic League, Joaquín Sosa just sewed up the Rookie of the Month trophy for May.

Over the past month the 25-year-old first baseman for Chicago hit .266 with 29 hits, 5 home runs and 26 runs batted in. He also logged 8 walks and compiled a .306 on-base percentage.

A look at his season totals shows Sosa with 12 home runs, .292 BA, .339 OBP, 48 RBIs and 27 runs scored.

Continental League Announces June's Best Batter

Miguel Guerra battered Continental League pitchers all June and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around FOOL-X long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 33-year-old Guerra told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 27 games, Guerra hit .389 with 9 home runs, 32 RBIs and scored 25 runs.

This year Guerra has hit at a .344 pace and produced 74 RBIs, 16 home runs and scored 67 runs.


RL's Best Batter Selected

Jorge López, the Cleveland left fielder, had a productive month in June. He put up some solid numbers with a .340 batting average (35 for 103), 8 home runs, 24 RBIs and 20 runs scored.

That standout offense earned him the Republic League Batter of the Month Trophy.

This year López is batting .294 with 90 hits and 14 home runs. He has scored 47 times and has batted in 51 runs.

Plantana Starter Named CL's Top Pitcher

Arnold Burns took home the Continental League Pitcher of the Month honors in June. After all these years playing ball, the 37-year-old veteran still enjoys the game as though he'd just broken camp for the first time a month ago. He's a bit older now with a few more aches and pains, but the old man has reason to celebrate, having gone 5-0 for Plantana last month and claiming the Pitcher of the Month award.

He tacked up a 2.42 ERA in his 6 starts, tossing 44.2 innings and striking out 24.

This year Burns has fashioned a 7-3 mark, 4.23 ERA and pitched 95.2 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .264 against him and he has logged 51 strikeouts.


Maricopa Starter Named RL's Premier Pitcher

Manolo Hernández's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 4-1 in June, the 31-year-old Maricopa hurler has been named Republic League Pitcher of the Month.

He fanned 42 in 43.1 innings, logged an ERA of 2.08 and allowed opponents to hit .257 against him.

This year Hernández has gone 7-5 with an ERA of 3.93 and has 101 strikeouts in 110 innings.

Ledoux Heads the Freshman Class

Sam Ledoux might not have fully digested the impact of winning June's Continental League Rookie of the Month award when he got the news earlier today, but the 21-year-old quickly learned that he was no longer your typical rookie.

Posting a mark of 4-0 won-lost record will do that. In 5 starts he tossed 37 innings with 42 strikeouts and a 2.19 ERA. Opposing teams hit .174 against him during the month.

Not bad for a first-year man.

In 16 starts this season Ledoux has recorded a 8-3 record and a 3.34 ERA.


Sosa Receives June Rookie Award

Joaquín Sosa is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Republic League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In June the Chicago hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .271 average with 32 hits, 5 home runs and 23 RBIs.

This year Sosa is hitting .284, produced 71 RBIs and 17 home runs, scored 48 times and gotten on base at a .328 rate.

Guerra Brings Home CL Batter of Month Honor

Miguel Guerra really put on a show in July, earning the Batter of the Month Award in the Continental League!

The London first baseman batted .367 with 8 home runs, 19 RBIs, 18 runs scored, along with 10 walks to compile a .432 on-base percentage.

Guerra is swinging at a .350 pace on the year with 24 home runs, 93 RBIs and 85 runs scored. He has played in 105 games.

Pedro Muñóz of the Manchester Terriers is in the spotlight today. The relief ace was voted the top pitcher in the Continental League for July.

He compiled a 2-0 record and an ERA of 0.69 in 13 innings with 8 strikeouts. Muñóz nailed down 8 saves in 8 save opportunities.

León Ruíz Selected August's Best Batter

August was a very productive month for León Ruíz, and today the Havana center fielder was rewarded with the Continental League Batter of the Month honors.

He clobbered enemy hurlers for a .311 average, 7 home runs, and 29 RBIs and scored 18 runs.

When guys like Ann Arbor's Mi-yuan Yap win Batter of the Month awards, it just makes you feel good. In a productive August, the longtime Republic League veteran toyed with opposing pitchers all month long, collecting 39 hits in 114 at-bats.

The veteran designated hitter hit for a .342 batting average and collected 1 home run, 21 RBIs and 16 runs scored.

Thus far this season Yap is hitting .336 with 7 home runs, 87 RBIs and 75 runs scored. He has 170 hits in 506 at-bats and has played in 132 games.

CL Selects Ledoux August's #1 Pitcher

Sam Ledoux really put his best foot forward in August with 4 wins and 1 loss and walked off with the Pitcher of the Month honors in the Continental League. When he got the start for the Havana Banana Sluggers, it was good news for his club, but bad news for the opposition.

In 44 innings of work, Ledoux limited opposing batters to 32 base hits and a .208 batting average. He notched 41 strikeouts, issued 8 walks and had a 0.61 ERA.

This season Ledoux has compiled a 15-6 record with a 2.51 ERA.


Best Starter Chosen by Republic League

When Víctor Márquez takes the hill, he's a good bet to nail down the victory for the Ann Arbor Wolverines. At least that's the way it was in May.

He excelled with a 4-0 mark and 0.76 ERA in 5 starts. In 35.2 innings, he fanned 33 and walked 9.
That's why he was honored today as the Pitcher of the Month by the Republic League.

Márquez has made 27 starts, tossed 162.1 innings, struck out 140 batters and walked 33. His record is 13-6 with a 3.16 ERA and he has limited other teams to a .238 batting average.

The batter wants to "hit 'em where they ain't." And that is just what Onfrio Columbo did all month long to net the Continental League Rookie of the Month Award.

In August he slapped 29 hits in 87 at-bats for a .333 batting average. Columbo also racked up 6 home runs, 14 RBIs, and 14 runs scored.

To date Columbo has chalked up a .264 average with 19 home runs, driven in 67 runs and scored 48 times.

September's #1 Batter Announced

The Continental League has given Michel St-Pierre the Batter of the Month Award.

In September, the Plantana right fielder starred with a .351 batting average, 4 home runs and 21 RBIs. St-Pierre also had 20 walks, posted a .471 on-base percentage and scored 23 times.

This season St-Pierre is batting .258 with 143 hits, 22 home runs, 99 RBIs, 54 walks, .329 OBP and has scored 69 runs. He has played in 150 games.


RL Announces Best Batter Award

Prospective free agents love to have hot streaks and Germán Díaz is no exception. The Portland first baseman capped off a fine month by hauling in Batter of the Month honors in the Republic League.

In September Díaz hit .362 with 4 home runs, 19 RBIs and 22 runs scored.

This year Díaz is hitting at a .287 pace with 30 home runs and 99 RBIs. He has played in 159 games and scored 96 times.

Cobb Selected CL's Best Pitcher

September's premier pitcher was Jim Cobb of Alberta Renegades. He pulverized Continental League hitters all month long and picked up the Pitcher of the Month award. The Renegades star hurler fashioned a 4-0 en route to the honor.

He had 45 strikeouts in 44.1 innings and compiled a 2.03 ERA. Other clubs hit .219 against him.

On the season Cobb has 14 wins and 13 losses and a 2.44 ERA.


Sawyer September's Best Hurler in RL

This month when the Maricopa manager wrote the name "Sawyer" on the lineup card, he was pretty confident that he would get a good start out of him. Outing after outing in September Bill Sawyer took command and usually got the win.

He dominated with a 4-0 mark and 1.24 ERA in 5 starts, piling up 36.1 innings and 36 strikeouts and holding opposing teams to a .239 average.

For his superb performance Sawyer was named the Republic League Pitcher of the Month by the baseball writers.

Up to now Sawyer has compiled an ERA of 2.87 with a 15-9 mark over 32 starts. He has 235 strikeouts in 232.1 innings and has held opponents to a .240 batting average.

Best CL Rookie Named, Nod to Muñíz

Raúl Muñíz of the London Bishops has been chosen the top Rookie in the Continental League.

In September he racked up 28 hits, 2 home runs, 12 RBIs and 13 runs scored. He hit .298 with a .327 OBP.

So far this year, Muñíz is batting .213 with 6 home runs and 46 RBIs.

Jorge Días had a standout September and today received the Republic League Rookie of the Month trophy.

Last month the 23-year-old Maricopa right fielder played in 27 games and hit .284 with 1 double, 2 triples and 8 home runs. Días also scored 20 times and drove in 19 runs.

In his stats this season, Días has posted a batting average of .258 with 127 hits in 493 at-bats, 22 home runs and 75 RBIs. He has also scored 83 runs, walked 71 times and compiled a .353 OBP.
