What does it take to win a Slick Fielder Award? It's a combination of good hands, knowing how to play the hitters, all-out hustle and a willingness to sacrifice your body to make a play. Good speed and a good arm never hurt, either, but not always required. This year's all-defense team in the Continental League consists of:

Defense is a critical element in the game of baseball. Many times late in the game, a light-hitting defensive specialist will be inserted in place of a superstar hitter. Good defenders are worth their weight in gold and today the best of them for 2123 have been recognized. These players will receive the Republic League Slick Fielder Award:

Oshawa Shortstop Wins CL Rookie of the Year

The debut season of Oshawa's shortstop Tomás Soto was capped off today with the announcement that he has been crowned the 2123 Continental League Kien-lung Teng Award winner.

Here are his season stats: 110 games played, a .326 average, 58 hits, 5 home runs, 7 walks and a .349 on-base percentage. Soto also drove in 31 runs and scored 15 times.


Laborinho Receives RL Kien-lung Teng Award

Today the Republic League announced that Portland first baseman Botol Laborinho is the winner of the 2123 Kien-lung Teng Award.

He finished the regular season with a .278 batting average, 23 doubles, no triples and 13 home runs. Laborinho also had 69 RBIs and scored 55 times.

London Star Carmona Cops Mauro Morales Award

An old hand in this game, Gabriel Carmona of the London Bishops silenced critics as well as he silenced the opposition this year by winning the Continental League Mauro Morales Award.

The 35-year-old starter threw 217 innings, notched 137 strikeouts and put up a 21-6 record to claim the coveted award.


Top Pitcher Trophy Won by Rattlers Sawyer

The Mauro Morales Award for 2123 has been presented and the Republic League winner is Bill Sawyer of Maricopa.

"It's always nice to receive an award like this," said Sawyer. "I just hope I can improve on my performance next year and be in the running again," the Rattlers star told reporters.

Sawyer excelled with an impressive 21-7 record in 33 starts. In 250.2 innings he yielded 219 hits and 32 walks, while striking out 243 and compiling a fine 2.76 ERA.

Yánez Tops CL Best Batter List

It's been a year of triumph for veteran Jesús Yánez of the Washington Freedom as he hit his way to the 2123 Continental League Bartolo Liriano Award.

The 30-year-old veteran compiled a .325 average and .422 on-base percentage by putting together 202 hits, 34 doubles, 10 triples, 41 home runs and 104 walks. He also scored 118 times and drove in 127 runs.


Miguel Guerra Nabs Best Bat Trophy

What a way to finish off the year -- being honored with the 2123 Bartolo Liriano Award in the Republic League. It had already been a very special season for Las Vegas's Miguel Guerra, but today's announcement really put the icing on his cake.

All season long Miguel Guerra gave opposing pitchers fits by hitting .347 as he collected 224 hits, 49 doubles, 7 triples, 49 home runs and 151 RBIs.
