CL Honors 2124 Slick Fielder Award Winners

What does it take to win a Slick Fielder Award? It's a combination of good hands, knowing how to play the hitters, all-out hustle and a willingness to sacrifice your body to make a play. Good speed and a good arm never hurt, either, but not always required. This year's all-defense team in the Continental League consists of:

Even on days when they don't get a hit, they feel they can make a difference in the field -- and they do. The Republic League announced its Slick Fielder Award honorees for 2124. This year's recipients are:

Carter Is This Year's Best Rookie

When Washington reliever Dennis Carter was called in from the bullpen this season, it usually was lights out for the other team. For his solid mound work he was given the Continental League Kien-lung Teng Award for 2124.

In 82 relief appearances he rang up a 10-3 won-lost mark and a 1.92 ERA. In 98.2 innings the Freedom rookie fanned 112 and walked 49.


Spring's García Gets RL Kien-lung Teng Award

This year's outstanding newcomer has been selected and the honor goes to the Spring rookie Mario García -- the recipient of the 2124 Republic League Kien-lung Teng Award.

The talented Lions right fielder took the trophy by hitting .295 in 133 games this season and finished with 147 hits, 21 home runs, 87 RBIs and 61 runs scored.

Big Year For Fraser, Wins CL Mauro Morales Award

The 2124 Continental League Mauro Morales Award has gone to Omaha Bees ace Larry Fraser after a stellar 17-8 season.

In 32 starts he piled up 211 innings, 191 strikeouts, 44 walks and a 2.52 ERA. Fraser held opposing hitters to a .234 batting average.


RL's Best Pitcher is Sawyer

The Mauro Morales Award for 2124 has been presented and the Republic League winner is Bill Sawyer of Maricopa.

"It's always nice to receive an award like this," said Sawyer. "I just hope I can improve on my performance next year and be in the running again," the Rattlers star told reporters.

Sawyer excelled with an impressive 23-2 record in 31 starts. In 248.2 innings he yielded 184 hits and 30 walks, while striking out 236 and compiling a fine 1.81 ERA.

Omaha's Yamashita Takes 2124 Bartolo Liriano Award

Kiyotaka Yamashita has been around FOOL-X enough to know a good hot streak when he sees one -- and he got to see one firsthand all year. For his standout run through the 2124 season, he's taking home the Bartolo Liriano Award in the Continental League.

The Omaha right fielder put up a batting average of .374 with 47 doubles, 2 triples, 33 home runs and 139 RBIs.

Miguel Guerra got just what he wanted after deciding to enter the free-agent market: a strong offensive performance in 2124, highlighted by his selection as the Republic League Bartolo Liriano Award.

The 29-year-old first baseman for Las Vegas churned out a .332 batting average while amassing 211 hits, 43 doubles, 9 triples, 36 home runs, 128 runs and 145 RBIs.

His performance virtually guarantees him a lucrative payday from whichever team he signs with during the offseason.

After skipping the first free agent session (the options were dizzying me), I think I did well with the second set. I only missed out on the two young SPs remaining and Gonzalez, the "first baseman" who is actually a great 3B/SS.

Got me my starting C and 1B, and added a star OF, as well as depth in the middle infield and in the pen.

It's nice to bring Sergio Garcia back. He is 41 years old, and yet he still has top notch ratings.
